Lampard 2.0: Chelsea chasing PL star who looked “better than Caicedo”

Chelsea have been a club who have been the home to numerous legends over the years, but none have quite managed to reach the levels achieved by Frank Lampard.

The midfielder joined for a reported fee of just £11m back in 2001, but very few people would have predicted his rise to stardom during his time at Stamford Bridge.

He racked up a total of 648 appearances for the Blues, managing to find the back of the net on 211 occasions – subsequently making him their club-record goalscorer in their history.

Such a feat is staggering for a midfielder, with his long-standing impact in the first team helping the club win three Premier League titles during his 13 years in West London.

However, in the present day, boss Enzo Maresca is currently on the hunt for a player who could potentially reach similar levels during their spell in the first-team.

Chelsea on the hunt for huge PL talent this January

Over the last couple of days, Chelsea have made it clear they intend to add another central midfielder to their ranks, leading them to the hunt for Elliot Anderson.

The Nottingham Forest star has caught the attention of numerous top-flight clubs, subsequently leading to Sean Dyche’s men placing a £100m asking price on his head.

The Blues aren’t currently alone in the pursuit of the England international, with Manchester United and Manchester City both closely monitoring the 23-year-old’s progress.

However, he’s not the only young English talent in the sights of Maresca and the board, with Kobbie Mainoo another player who they’re considering a move for this winter.

According to the Telegraph, the Blues are now firmly in the race to land the 20-year-old star who’s yet to make a league start at Old Trafford in the 2025/26 campaign.

The report also states that the club view him as an immediate and long-term option, but the Red Devils are currently unlikely to sanction a permanent exit despite his lack of action.

Why Mainoo could provide competition for Caicedo at Chelsea

After his £115m move to join Chelsea back in the summer of 2023, Moises Caicedo was always going to have huge pressure to succeed at Stamford Bridge.

Two and a half years on from such a transfer, the Ecuadorian international has made himself a crucial player for the Blues, often being the go to man in the midfield department.

The 24-year-old has already racked up 118 appearances across all competitions, subsequently helping Maresca win the UEFA Conference League last season.

However, despite his midfield role, he’s often caught the eye in attacking areas, as seen by his long-range strike in the victory over Liverpool early this season.

Caicedo has certainly developed into a world-class all-round option at the heart of the side, with the former Brighton man only going to get better with experience.

However, he could be joined by Mainoo in the years ahead, with the Englishman potentially being the perfect player to operate alongside him in a box-to-box role.

Such a move would be an expensive one, but they would be getting a top-level talent, with former professional Danny Murphy already singing his praises despite his tender age.

After his breakthrough in the 2023/24 campaign, the former Liverpool player claimed that the United star looked like a “better footballer than Caicedo” after a meeting between the two sides.

The pair’s respective stats from last season do make for some interesting reading, with Mainoo actually managing to better the Blues star in numerous key areas.

Such numbers highlight the 20-year-old’s incredible ability in possession, perfectly backing up the claim that he could be the ideal box-to-box option next to Caicedo.

His dominance in possession was highlighted in his better tallies of carries into the opposition 18-yard box, whilst also registering more progressive carries per 90.

However, without the ball, Mainoo also showcased his ball-winning ability, subsequently winning more of the tackles he entered than the Ecuadorian international.

A move for the Englishman would be yet another incredible piece of business by the Blues hierarchy, potentially handing Caicedo the perfect long-term partner he craves.

The prospect of the pair featuring alongside one another is certainly a frightening one, with such a duo handing the club the best chance of returning to Premier League glory.

Rangers handed Lowland League boost

A major Rangers development has emerged regarding their B team at Ibrox ahead of the 2022/23 campaign…

What’s the talk?

The Daily Record have confirmed, via an official statement, that the Gers’ reserve team will remain in the Lowland League for at least another season. Of the other 15 teams in the division, 11 voted to keep the Ibrox giants and their Parkhead rivals in it for another year.

They will not be allowed to be promoted or relegated from the fifth tier of Scottish football, which means that their participation is not preventing any teams from moving up or down the pyramid.

Buzzing

Gio van Bronckhorst will surely be buzzing with this news, as it is a huge boost to the club’s academy setup ahead of next season.

It allows the young prospects at Ibrox to play regular football at senior level without going out on loan. This means that the Gers can closely monitor their development and pick and choose when they are ready to make the step up to the Dutchman’s squad.

Instead of playing against other youth sides and not knowing how they can deal with the physicality of men’s football, playing in the fifth tier gives Rangers a broader perspective on their young players’ talents.

Speaking about the benefits, Ross Wilson previously said: “We want to test our players in different scenarios. Playing in the Lowland League would provide a completely different test for the young players, as well as our best-v-best games programme that we would continue to operate against some of the best teams in Europe.”

The sporting director also spoke about the need for the B Team to play in the division prior to the approval. He said: “We haven’t really seen any progress at all on some of the things that we think are to the betterment of Scottish football and player development in particular. Those things are steeped in data and research, not just something we have plucked out of thin air. They are concepts that have worked in other countries.”

Teenage striker Tony Weston is currently the second-top scorer in the league with 21 goals, six behind The Spartans forward Blair Henderson. Alex Lowry, who found the back of the net for Van Bronckhorst’s team in the Scottish Cup, has also scored seven goals in the Lowland League, which suggests that he has reaped the rewards of playing senior football.

Lowry is one player who has already benefited from playing in the fifth tier and hopefully he will be the first of many to do so. This is why the Dutch head coach will be delighted that his academy prospects will be playing in the division for another year.

Wolves keen for Kilman to stay at Molineux

Wolves could be in for a busy summer transfer window as they gear up to see some of their current players leave the club with their contracts due to expire at the end of the season.

However, it seems as though the Midlands club have a plan in place to keep hold of one of their other squad players that has been mentioned with a move away from Molineux in recent weeks.

What’s the talk?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Dean Jones had this to say about the upcoming summer transfer window and what Wolves could do in regards to the future of Max Kilman, who has recently been linked with a move to fellow Premier League club Chelsea.

He said: “I think Wolves will probably price him out of the market at this stage if they possibly can. They’ll do what they did with Adama Traore last summer because he’s been so important to them.”

Fans buzzing

The defender joined the Old Gold back in the 2018 summer window on a free transfer from Maidenhead United and has gone on to make 62 senior appearances for the club across all competitions, scoring one goal and providing two assists along the way.

This season has seen the 24-year-old prove how vital he has become for Bruno Lage’s side by racking up more minutes in the league than any other outfield player, meaning that if he does indeed stay at Molineux, supporters will surely be buzzing.

Furthermore, he has racked up an overall performance rating of 6.93/10, making him the fourth-highest rated outfield figure in the squad according to WhoScored.

Taking into account what Jones had to say, if the Midlands club do try and price the centre-back out of a move this summer, it shows just how keen they are be to keep hold of him and how highly Lage rates him.

If the Englishman does end up staying, it would surely be a big thing for the fans to celebrate when you consider how good he’s been on the pitch in this campaign, contributing to an exceptionally good defensive record. Combine that with 99% of voters in a recent poll from Football FanCast declaring they’d been impressed with the defender this season and it’s clear he’s beginning to become a fan favourite.

Given how young he is compared to his fellow defensive teammates as well such as Conor Coady, Romain Saiss and Willy Boly, Kilman certainly has the potential to be a long-term figure for Wolves if he ignores any potential interest in him from elsewhere and pledges his future to the club.

Spurs: Conte suffers Ryan Sessegnon blow

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has delivered an injury update ahead of his side’s Premier League clash against Manchester United this evening.

What’s the story?

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, the Italian confirmed that Ryan Sessegnon will be missing for the north London side against United, with the 21-year-old set to be ruled out for a month.

Conte said: “Ryan had a scan, and he has a muscular problem. I think he will need one month to recover. For sure, it’s a pity because at the moment Ryan is giving continuity in his performances and this injury is no good for him, no good for the team.

“We have to stay close to him and to support him to recover very soon. I was a player and I know that when you are injured, it’s a tough time for you because you are not able to do your work, and for this reason you are frustrated.”

Big miss for Spurs

The England youth international had just been beginning to find his feet at Spurs in recent weeks, starting the past four Premier League games for the club and seeing them pick up three wins in the process.

Writing in his post-match player ratings for the game against Everton last time out, football.london’s Alasdair Gold gave Sessegnon a seven, saying: “Fired in a dangerous low ball that Keane could only power into his own net under pressure from Kane. Showed some good attacking movement, as well as a couple of sloppy moments at the back. However, he picked up an injury right at the end of the half and was replaced by Reguilon.”

Sessegnon’s incredible turn of pace was the real difference-maker in that crucial opening goal against the Toffees, completely leaving veteran full-back Seamus Coleman for dust before delivering a dangerous cross into the box.

It was clear that, in recent weeks, the young defender had picked up some much-needed rhythm and confidence, and being given the trust of a manager like Conte in playing week in, week out seemed to bring the best out of him.

Rangers can save millions with Rory Wilson

Rangers boss Gio van Bronckhorst has relied upon Alfredo Morelos to be his go-to man at the top of the pitch throughout the season at Ibrox.

The Colombian striker has 19 goals and eight assists in all competitions for the Gers and has been a constant threat in the Premiership and Europa League.

His supporting acts have struggled to oust him from his starting spot, with Kemar Roofe producing two goals and zero assists in seven league starts and Cedric Itten failing to provide a single goal contribution in four appearances in the Scottish top flight.

Save millions

Roofe and Itten’s struggles to truly push Morelos for his place in the XI may force Ross Wilson to look into the transfer market to buy a player to compete for the number nine position. The Gers would benefit from having another regular scorer, both in terms of what it would mean for Van Bronckhorst’s options and the motivation it would provide the Colombian hitman to improve his own game.

Rangers can save themselves millions, though, if the Dutchman can convince talented youngster Rory Wilson to stay at Ibrox. The 16-year-old is out of contract this summer and Football Insider recently reported that he is attracting interest from the Premier League.

Van Bronckhorst must now do everything in his power to turn the situation around in order to secure the striker’s future at the club. If he is able to do so, the Gers may not need to splash the cash on a new centre-forward, as Wilson’s goalscoring record at youth level suggests that he has the potential to make his mark in the senior squad.

In all competitions this season, the 16-year-old has found the back of the net 40 times for Rangers’ youth teams and also on seven occasions for Scotland at under-17 level.

His form for his country has led to coach Brian McLaughlin lauding his talents, with the under-17 boss saying: “Rory is another who can play again in the next campaign. We have been brave enough to go really young at this age group. So Rory is leading the line as a 2006 against big powerful 2005s.

“He is a clever player, his touch is good, his attitude is superb and his finishing .. for a young boy to be able to finish the way he can finish, just clinical and calm in front of goals. He knows he is always going to get a chance because his movement gives him that.”

His statistics for club and country and this lavish praise from his national team manager would suggest that Wilson has a bright future in the game. This is why Van Bronckhorst must offer him a first-team place next season in the hope that it convinces him to extend his stay in Glasgow, saving the club from needing to bring in a new number nine.

Everton transfer news on Richarlison

Patrick Boyland has revealed that Richarlison could now leave Everton in the summer, if a substantial transfer offer is made.

The Lowdown: Key player

There is no doubt that the 24-year-old is still a key player at Goodison Park, having been a great servant to them over the years.

The Brazil international has scored 47 goals and provided a further 12 assists in 136 games across all competitions for the Merseyside club (Transfermarkt), but with a serious threat of relegation this season, they may find it difficult to keep him in the summer.

The Latest: Boyland’s Richarlison reveal

Writing in his latest piece for The Athletic, Boland has revealed that Richarlison could now leave Everton if a ‘big bid’ is made, with Paris Saint-Germain among a number of ‘top clubs’ who have tracked the Brazil forward.

The Toffees know that it would be ‘tough’ to replace him, and the 24-year-old has ‘lofty ambitions’ of his own.

The Verdict: Worrying

Especially in the midst of a relegation battle, it is certainly worrying that Richarlison could leave Everton this summer, a prospect which will no doubt be elevated if they go down.

Currently on £110,000-per-week, he would likely be one man who would have to be shown the exit door first if they were in the Championship, and even if they manage to stay in the Premier League, the forward will unlikely want to be part of another relegation battle, so he may look elsewhere.

Dubbed ‘fantastic’ by former Blues manager Carlo Ancelotti, Richarlison is also a key player for Frank Lampard, who will be hoping that the 24-year-old can do enough to at least help the Toffees to stay up, before then evaluating his future at the end of the campaign.

ExWHUemployee shares Ogbonna injury update

West Ham insider ExWHUemployee has now shared a significant injury update regarding Angelo Ogbonna.

The Lowdown: Ogbonna’s injury

The Italian defender suffered a cruciate ligament rupture during the 3-2 win over Liverpool last November. Consequently he was ruled out for the season; and with his contract expiring in the summer, this seemingly meant that the 33-year-old had already played his last game in a Hammers shirt.

Before the Liverpool game, Ogbonna had played the full 90 minutes in all ten of West Ham’s opening Premier League matches this term. He played a crucial part in the team’s fantastic start to the season as his side won six, drew two and lost two.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments-4/” title=”West Ham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Ex’s update on Ogbonna…

In an interview for his site The West Ham Way, ExWHUemployee was asked by site editor Mark Carlaw about Jarrod Bowen’s injury situation. After relaying positive news on the 25-year-old, Ex continued speaking about some of the club’s other injuries.

He stated: “Whilst we are on injuries, I can say that Ogbonna is ahead of schedule, with end of April being a potential return date for him.”

The Verdict: Great news

The Irons have suffered from a lack of central defensive depth at times this season, with Craig Dawson and Issa Diop at times the only two options to call upon in that position.

Therefore, Ogbonna’s return will prove hugely useful for the east London club as they prepare to undergo a busy period consisting of Premier League clashes in the hunt for a European finish and their all-important Europa League quarter-final tie against Lyon.

Interestingly, the Italian ranks in the 94th percentile for non-penalty goals among defenders in Europe’s top five leagues (via FB Ref), so with Michail Antonio going through another drought in the final third, let’s hope that the defender can offer some attacking threat from corners upon his return.

Newcastle backed to sign Joe Gomez

Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez could potentially join Newcastle United in the summer transfer window, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Gomez out of favour at Liverpool

The 24-year-old has had a frustrating season to date, finding himself behind Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate in the centre-back pecking order at Anfield.

Gomez has only started one Premier League game all season and even that was at right-back against Norwich City last weekend.

It is only natural that he may be keen on earning more regular playing time elsewhere, with other clubs rumoured to be eyeing up a move for him.

The Latest: Journalist backs Newcastle move for Gomez

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones claimed that Newcastle could end up being Gomez’s next destination this summer amid links with a move to Tyneside, seeing him as a more realistic signing than someone like Paul Pogba.

The journalist stated: “I think when names like Pogba get thrown around, and then you’re also seeing Joe Gomez, you’re like, ‘Well, that seems much more sensible’. And from what we’ve seen so far, a much more likely route that they go down.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-21/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Keep hold of him

Gomez may currently be struggling to make his mark at Liverpool but he is a proven defender who remains relatively young, having been hailed as ‘sensational’ by Jurgen Klopp in the past.

It would be a huge shame to see him move on, and with Van Dijk and Matip both turning 31 this year, he should still be viewed as a long-term option at the back for the Reds.

While serious injury problems may have had an impact, which could alter Liverpool’s thinking, it makes more sense to persevere with him into the future, rather than possibly allowing him to excel at another Premier League club.

Doucoure let Everton down against Newcastle

Everton beat Newcastle 1-0 on Thursday night thanks to a late Alex Iwobi goal against the run of play, after Toffees midfielder Allan was sent off for a cynical tackle on Magpies winger Allan Saint-Maximin.

The goal, which sparked crazy celebrations which saw manager Frank Lampard break his hand, moved the Merseyside club three points clear of the relegation zone.

While Allan may appear to be the villain of the night for the eventual winners, it was Abdoulaye Doucoure who received the lowest match rating out of anyone who started the match, apart from Newcastle’s Joelinton, who was given a 6.0 rating by SofaScore, compared to the Frenchman’s 6.6.

Doucoure is Everton’s highest-performing midfielder this season with a 6.89 average match rating in the Premier League from Sofascore, completing 80% of his passes per game. However, last night he only managed 72%, also completing ten fewer passes than his seasonal average.

Not only did the 29-year-old lose 13 of his duels, he also lost possession 13 times and was dribbled past twice as Newcastle routinely looked to exploit the area of the pitch that Doucoure covered due to his poor performance.

Failing to complete any long balls forward or crosses in the game, he proved to be ineffective for Lampard last night; and with Andre Gomes waiting for opportunities on the sidelines, more performances like this may prompt the 43-year-old into potentially deploying other options.

However, having made six goal contributions in 20 Premier League appearances, the former Watford man remains Everton’s most creative midfielder statistically, posting the third-most goal contributions in the team.

Among central midfielders in the top five leagues and continental competitions in Europe, Doucoure ranks in the top 10% for ball recoveries per game (11.86), top 8% for pressures in the defensive third per game (8.93) and top 12% for assists per 90 (0.17). This shows that he still has plenty to offer to Lampard’s team, but on Thursday night he let the manager down with his below-par performance.

Hendrick set for summer exit from Newcastle

Newcastle United’s new owners showed during the January transfer window how keen they are on revitalising the squad at St James’ Park and strengthening where needed.

Looking ahead to the upcoming summer transfer window, it seems as though the Tyneside club could be set to say goodbye to at least one figure who was brought in during Mike Ashley’s tenure.

What’s the talk?

Speaking to Football FanCast, transfer insider Pete O’Rourke was discussing the future of Jeff Hendrick at Newcastle and what the upcoming summer transfer window could hold for him.

The journalist said: “Obviously, we saw Jeff Hendrick go out on loan in January, I’d expect him to leave on a permanent in the summer.”

Newcastle signed the midfielder in 2020 on a free transfer from fellow Premier League side Burnley. Since then, the 30-year-old made just 27 appearances for the Toon across all competitions before being loaned out to Championship side Queens Park Rangers in January, as O’Rourke mentioned.

Having made 22 appearances for Newcastle during the previous Premier League campaign, the Irishman earned a rather disappointing overall performance rating of 6.33/10 from WhoScored, making him the lowest-rated player to start more than four league games for the Magpies.

Also, having only made 18 combined tackles and interceptions, fewer than the majority of players in Newcastle’s squad at the time, it’s safe to say that the Irish midfielder didn’t offer much in terms of breaking up opposition attacks.

Taking this into account, it would be safe to assume that many supporters at St James’ Park would be happy to see the back of Hendrick if he were to leave for good this summer.

However, having only earned an uninspiring overall performance rating of 6.42/10 from nine Championship appearances with QPR since his arrival in west London, Newcastle may have a challenge on their hands finding a club to take him.

Either way, as long as the midfielder isn’t on the books at St James’ Park heading into next season, it’s hard to see too many Magpies supporters being bothered about where he ends up.
