Worcestershire captain Daryl Mitchell scored his first Specsavers County Championship hundred for 13 months on a drastically curtailed third day against Northamptonshire at New Road. The 32-year-old, who is in his benefit year with the County, went to his century off 164 balls with 16 boundaries to end a lean run of form. He now needs only another 28 runs to complete 10,000 runs in his career in first-class cricket. However, only 17.2 overs were possible in the day as Worcestershire added 42 runs for the loss of two wickets in reaching 195 for 3 – still 356 in arrears. With leaders Essex winning against Leicestershire at Grace Road, Worcestershire have to win to retain their slim hopes of promotion although it remains to be seen whether the two sides will collude tomorrow to try and force a positive result.Worcestershire resumed on 153 for 1 from 40 overs but added only seven more runs before Ben Sanderson accounted for Tom Fell (66) who was caught behind. His stand with Mitchell had been worth 152 in 42 overs.Mitchell, who had been on 86 overnight, reached three figures with an edge for four through the slips off Sanderson. It was his first three-figure score since a double hundred against Hampshire at New Road in July 2015.Play was halted after 12.3 overs and there was then a four-hour delay before the players returned for two brief interludes. In the first of those Joe Clarke (6) played a loose shot at yesterday’s debutant century-maker Chad Barrett and was caught by Ben Duckett at first slip. When umpires Steve Gale and Graham Lloyd called off play for the day at 5.35pm, Mitchell was unbeaten on 102.

Burnley Could Replace Cork With Swoop For 21 y/o Target

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany could be a busy man over the next few months as the Belgian attempts to build a squad capable of competing in the Premier League.

The head coach led the club to glory in the Championship, winning the title with 101 points, and could look to the summer transfer window to improve his team.

Foot Mercato recently reported that the Clarets are seriously considering a swoop to sign Bristol City defensive midfielder Han-Noah Massengo, who has been on loan at Auxerre this season.

The 21-year-old is out of contract at Ashton Gate this summer after joining them from Monaco for €8m (£6.9m) in 2019 and is set to be available as a free agent, which could make him a bargain signing for Kompany.

How has Han-Noah Massengo performed this season?

He joined Ligue 1 side Auxerre on loan for the second half of the 2022/23 campaign and enjoyed a strong five months of action in his home country.

The talented France U21 youngster, who was once dubbed a "roaming playmaker" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has showcased his defensive instincts in the middle of the park and his ability as a holding midfielder could make him the perfect heir to 33-year-old Burnley ace Jack Cork.

Burnley midfielder Jack Cork.

Massengo averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.85 across 13 appearances in Ligue 1, where he also made 3.3 tackles and interceptions per game, which shows that the French enforcer is able to win the ball back for his side on a regular basis.

Cork, on the other hand, averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.77 across his 39 outings, where he made 2.5 tackles and interceptions per league match for the Clarets.

The former Monaco man has also won 53% of his duels in comparison to the Englishman's 51% and this means that the youngster has made more defensive interventions per appearance whilst also being more efficient in his attempted challenges.

Both players have a pass completion rate between 86 and 87% and have the quality to be reliable in possession to go along with their excellent defending in front of the back line.

Massengo is also 12 years younger than Cork and this means that the ace has plenty of years left ahead of him to grow and develop and could do just that under Kompany's coaching at Turf Moor.

Therefore, the soon-to-be free agent could be the dream long-term heir to the veteran defensive midfielder and could lean on the Englishman's experience to help him improve before eventually taking over in that position in the team.

Headingley-bound Lehmann follows in father's footsteps

Jake Lehmann has signed a short-term deal for Yorkshire and has the chance to play on the Headingley ground where his father became one of the county’s most-loved players

Yorkshire have signed Jake Lehmann, son of the Australian coach Darren, for the remainder of the 2016 Specsavers County Championship season.Lehmann junior, one of Australia’s most up-and-coming batsmen, now has the chance to tread in the footsteps of his father, the most popular overseas player to wear the White Rose, as Yorkshire chase a hat-trick of Championship titles. He joins Yorkshire ahead of a key period of Championship action, the first of six remaining games getting underway at Old Trafford on Saturday when the White Rose take on rivals Lancashire. He also has the added appeal of a British passport. After the completion of Australia A’s match against South Africa in Townsville, he is due to leave Australia on Wednesday and should arrive in time to play in that four-day match.Yorkshire moved swiftly to secure the services of the South Australia and Adelaide Strikers man after the departure of Travis Head on Sunday. Head, 22, was called up earlier than expected after winning selection for Australia’s ODI series in Sri Lanka and has left the Club with immediate effect.Head’s departure to Sri Lanka in time for the final Test, where he will train and assimilate into the dressing room, but play no active part, has left Yorkshire in the lurch for their NatWest T20 Blast quarter-final against Glamorgan in Cardiff on Thursday.Even if Lehmann could have arrived in time, ECB regulations prevent the signing of overseas players in the later stages of both one-day competitions to seek to prevent counties strengthening with gun players for the final stages.Arguably, however, the policy shows scant understanding of realities in which overseas players come and go in country cricket with alarming regularity. Injuries occur, contracts are won, promises are broken, honest intentions fail to come to fruition and by limiting a county’s ability to respond to events, the ECB is essentially creating a lottery. As well as Yorkshire facing Glamorgan without Head – as well as four absent Englansd stars – Middlesex must cope without a replacement for Brendon McCullum against Northamptomshire because he needs a back operation.Yorkshire’s head coach Jason Gillespie nevertheless has used his friendship with Lehmann senior and involvement with South Australia to broker a quick deal which will sustain Yorkshire in the Championship.”Getting a player of quality is always difficult at this stage of the season, but we’re delighted to secure the services of Jake,” he said.”Things happened pretty quickly, triggered by Travis being called into the Australia squad and hopefully he goes on to get a game. Cricket Australia were fantastic to deal with and coordinating with South Australia went fantastically well and we were able to arrange for Jake to come over.”He’s a great kid, gives the ball a whack and has shown good nous and awareness. Having worked with him at the Strikers he’ll fit in to the changing room too, as all our players do. I just hope that he has a good time with us, enjoys himself and contributes to some good wins for Yorkshire.”Darren Lehmann represented Yorkshire as an overseas player for a decade from 1997, his weight of runs and laconic, easy-going nature making him comfortably the most successful overseas player to represent the club since the members first voted to allow overseas players in 1992.In all, he scored 8871 runs at an average of 68.76. In 2001 he helped Yorkshire to their first County Championship title since 1968. His top score of 339 against Durham in 2006 during his final game for the club enabled Yorkshire to avoid relegation by a point. It was also the highest individual first-class innings at Headingley and the second highest for Yorkshire behind George Hirst’s 341 against Leicestershire in 1905.

Celtic: Jota close to permanent move

Celtic are reportedly expecting Jota to sign a permanent contract with the club, and it could be finalised as early as this week, according to the Daily Record.

The Lowdown: Eye-catching loan spell

The 23-year-old joined the Premiership side on a season-long loan from Benfica last summer, and as part of his deal, it is claimed that there is a purchase option for a fee believed to be in the region of just over £6m.

During his spell with the Glasgow giants, the forward has made 40 appearances under Ange Postecoglou across all competitions, scoring 13 goals and registering 14 assists (as per Transfermarkt). Such form has clearly caught the eye of the Hoops’ hierarchy, who are now keen to retain Jota’s services outright.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/key-latest-celtic-updates-8/” title=”Key latest Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Jota close to permanent move

In an article from the Daily Record late on Tuesday night, it is claimed that the 23-year-old’s representatives are ‘due to hold a final round of talks’ with Celtic, which should see a permanent transfer completed over the next few days.

The report added that the Parkhead hierarchy have now ‘exercised’ the option to buy and have ‘all but agreed’ personal terms with the player ahead of his permanent move to Glasgow.

The Verdict: Instrumental to Celtic’s success

Jota has been a key figure in Celtic’s success this season, so it comes as no surprise to see that Postecoglou wants to keep him at the club for next term and beyond.

The £4.95m-rated talisman has proven to be a huge threat in the final third this season, averaging 2.7 shots, two key passes and 1.7 dribbles per league game (via WhoScored), making himself a real handful for opposition defenders to try and handle. Indeed, of the current Celtic squad, only David Turnbull achieved a higher WhoScored rating, illustrating the Portuguese gem’s importance to the side.

He was also hailed as a “terrific” and “clinical” player by Owen Hargraves last November following a fine performance against Ferencvaros in the Europa League.

Jota’s impact on the pitch is no doubt one of the main reasons why the Hoops have enjoyed so much success this term, having won the Premiership and Scottish League Cup. Should the 23-year-old extend his stay in Glasgow, Celtic could well go on to achieve even bigger and better things in the years to come.

West Ham: Ex drops Jarrod Bowen update

West Ham United are reportedly hoping to tie Jarrod Bowen down to a new deal, according to respected club insider ExWHUemployee.

What’s the word?

As per the West Ham Way, the transfer guru revealed that the Hammers are “very keen” to reward the 25-year-old’s impressive form this season with a bumper new contract, amid speculation linking him with an exit from the London Stadium.

Asked about the Englishman’s future, the trusted insider revealed: “Yes the club are very keen to offer Bowen a new deal and get him signed up, like they are with others. Now at this stage there isn’t much to report as I don’t believe the negotiations have progressed but the talks will continue over the summer.”

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-this-weeks-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-more” title= “Read the latest West Ham news!”]

This follows a report early last week which suggested that GSB wanted to double his existing wage by offering a new contract, even though the former Hull City man already has a deal that runs until 2025.

Supporters delighted

The Irons’ desire to hand their star asset improved terms is a reflection of just how vital he has been in recent seasons, with the £31.5m-rated speedster having gone from strength to strength since his £20m switch from the Championship in January 2020.

Since then, the £80k-per-week gem has bagged 27 goals and recorded 23 assists in 104 games in all competitions for the club, with such form sparking calls for the versatile forward to be handed a first international nod from Three Lions boss, Gareth Southgate.

The most recent campaign proved particularly profitable for the one-time Hereford man, as he has registered 12 goals and ten assists from his 36 Premier League outings, with only Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (13) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (12) registering more top-flight assists.

That is esteemed company indeed, hence the clamour to try and ensure that Bowen does commit his future to the east Londoners, with the division’s elite clubs likely to come sniffing should the player give off any sense that he is seeking pastures new.

The club’s supporters, however, will no doubt be desperate to see the Leominster-born ace continue to ply his trade in the claret and blue over the coming seasons, while he could prove instrumental in their hopes of a late run in next season’s Europa Conference League.

At present, he ranks favourably among his fellow forwards on the continent, as per FBref, ranking in the top 1% for interceptions, the top 4% for blocks and the top 11% for tackles, showcasing an industrious side to his game that has also proven crucial to manager David Moyes.

As the Hammers attempt to unsettle the top-six again next term – and enjoy another lengthy European run – having the lethal left-footer in tow will no doubt make those ambitions far easier to realise.

Man United must upgrade with Koulibaly

Manchester United have had a disappointing season but will be looking forward to the summer as Erik ten Hag will be arriving at the club to begin to fix the issues at Old Trafford and improve the squad ahead of next season.

There are many areas of improvement needed at the club and with so many players out of contract including Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Jesse Lingard, there will need to be signings made to add depth and quality all over the pitch.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-man-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-more-nunez-ten-hag-nkunku-richarlison” title=”Read the latest Man United news!”]

One area that is in drastic need of improvement is the defence, which has come under harsh criticism this season due to the consistently awful defensive throughout that have contributed to Man United’s failure to compete for trophies this season. As a result, they won’t play Champions League football next season after failing to pick up a top-four spot in the Premier League.

With that being said, Ten Hag must take the opportunity to sign defenders this summer and replacing Victor Lindelof with Kalidou Koulibaly would be a huge coup for the new manager and Manchester United.

The Senegalese defender was hailed a “monster” who “eats attackers whole” by football journalist Maxi Angelo, and has now been linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer.

According to Italian news outlet Area Napoli, Man United are now in contact with Koulibaly’s representatives to see if they can get a deal done for the centre-back.

When you compare the Napoli defender to Lindelof who was branded “pathetic” by journalist Rob Blanchette, this season there is no doubt that the signing would be a massive upgrade for the Red Devils and Ten Hag in his first season in charge at the club.

According to Squawka, Koulibaly has won more ground duels, more interceptions and completed more take-ons, whilst making more ball recoveries and blocks in two fewer appearances in the Serie A compared to the Swedish defender in Manchester.

If his defensive actions for Napoli weren’t enough to impress he has scored three goals and contributed one assist, ranking ninth for the most successful dribbles and has the fourth-highest shot conversion rate in the Serie A this season, proving that he is not only a force in defensive play but is highly effective in attacking too.

When you consider the quality that Koulibaly offers, the new Man United manager must seal the deal to secure the signature of the £40m AFCON winner this summer and by doing so he can finally axe Lindelof from the team.
