Newcastle backed to sign Joe Gomez

Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez could potentially join Newcastle United in the summer transfer window, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Gomez out of favour at Liverpool

The 24-year-old has had a frustrating season to date, finding himself behind Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate in the centre-back pecking order at Anfield.

Gomez has only started one Premier League game all season and even that was at right-back against Norwich City last weekend.

It is only natural that he may be keen on earning more regular playing time elsewhere, with other clubs rumoured to be eyeing up a move for him.

The Latest: Journalist backs Newcastle move for Gomez

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones claimed that Newcastle could end up being Gomez’s next destination this summer amid links with a move to Tyneside, seeing him as a more realistic signing than someone like Paul Pogba.

The journalist stated: “I think when names like Pogba get thrown around, and then you’re also seeing Joe Gomez, you’re like, ‘Well, that seems much more sensible’. And from what we’ve seen so far, a much more likely route that they go down.”

The Verdict: Keep hold of him

Gomez may currently be struggling to make his mark at Liverpool but he is a proven defender who remains relatively young, having been hailed as ‘sensational’ by Jurgen Klopp in the past.

It would be a huge shame to see him move on, and with Van Dijk and Matip both turning 31 this year, he should still be viewed as a long-term option at the back for the Reds.

While serious injury problems may have had an impact, which could alter Liverpool’s thinking, it makes more sense to persevere with him into the future, rather than possibly allowing him to excel at another Premier League club.

WAG Weekly – Bernardo’s woman puts the Premiership wags in the shade

Continuing our look into the foreign wags that put the Premier League ones to shame…

Bernardo Corradi, as Man City fans will testify, is a pretty unremarkable footballer who is currently available on a free transfer; however the term unremarkable certainly cannot be said of the experienced striker’s other half, the beautiful Elena Santarelli.

Miss Santarelli is a model and TV personality in her native Italy and I’m sure you’ll agree by flicking through the gallery that she more that puts the Premier League WAGs firmly in the shade.

While Mr Corradi currently does little but training on his own to maintain his fitness in hope of a move these days, I’m certain Bernardo must take a lot of comfort knowing the little lady he has waiting at home for him.

Aston Villa’s relegation talk is rubbished

Aston Villa winger Marc Albrighton has stated that the club does not expect to be embroiled in a relegation battle, and games against beatable opponents in coming weeks should send the team back up towards mid-table.

The Midlands outfit are currently in 15th place after a poor run of form, but the midfielder does not feel that this is cause for concern.

“No, we’re staying positive,” Albrighton told The Guardian when asked if Villa are fighting for survival.

“We have two games now against Blackburn and Wigan where we know we are good enough to beat those teams. So we’re aiming for six points now, nothing less, that will lift us back up the table.

“We’ve just got to stick together, everybody at the club has to unite and hopefully we can get out of this slump and start winning football matches,” he stated.

Alex McLeish has had to harbour the bulk of the blame for Villa’s poor season, but Albrighton has backed the Scottish manager to get it right with club.

“I’m in favour of the gaffer. He’s been doing well in training for us, he helps us out and he speaks to us, which is what you want from a manager.

“I thought the fans were terrific inside the ground on Sunday, they were brilliant. They got behind us from the first minute, and that’s what we need going through this bad time. Hopefully we can repay them over the next couple of games,” he concluded.

Loan move not an option for Carlos Tevez

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has stated that despite AC Milan claiming to have agreed the terms of a loan deal with Carlos Tevez, the Premier League club will not accept the deal, as they want to sell him.

The Argentina international has not played for City in months after refusing to come off the bench against Bayern Munich in September, and then going AWOL and returning to his homeland without the permission of the club.

The current Premier League leaders are paying the South American attacker’s huge wages despite the fact that he is playing no role at the club, and are keen to show him the door come January, recuperating money from his sale.

Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani stated yesterday that they were keen on a temporary deal initially, but this does not seem to interest the Etihad Stadium outfit.

“I don’t know exactly what is happening with Carlos, but we want to sell him,” the Italian coach stated to The Daily Mail.

“Nothing has happened yet, but it may do in the next few days. But they can’t take him on loan,” he clarified.

The news will come as a boost for Corinthians and Boca Juniors, who both are set to launch January bids for Tevez.

Blackburn owners tell fans to back the team

Blackburn owners Venky’s have urged the club’s fans to back the team, despite growing calls for Steve Kean to be sacked.

The Lancashire outfit are bottom of the league after gaining only one point from their opening four games, and an anti-Steve Kean lobby is preparing to protest outside Ewood Park on Saturday before the team’s game against Arsenal.

However, the clubs shareholders have belief the side can turn their bad fortune around, and have asked their supporters to believe in the players.

“We understand that there is sense of disappointment and anger among our fans at the recent performance of our team Blackburn Rovers, which was not up to the expectations of the fans. We fully understand your feelings and share your disappointment,” an official statement reads.

“At times like this, when the team is going through a bad patch, they need all the support and encouragement they can get from the fans to boost their morale and enable them to perform at their best. This is the time when the fans can make a difference by lending their full support and cheer the team more vigorously than ever, and, help the players to renew the confidence in themselves.

“On behalf of Venkys, we would like to reassure the fans that we are fully aware of our responsibilities towards the them, and the club and to football.

“We are fully committed to make sure that the team’s performance improves, and that the recent set backs do not stand in the way of regaining our clubs standing in the Premier League, and the admiration of our fans,” it concluded.

Blackburn face a tough test against an Arsenal side that played well in Europe against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday, and a defeat will put real pressure on an already under-performing team.

PFA’s Gordon Taylor calls for technology

PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor has added his backing to those campaigning for goal-line technology to be implemented in the game.

A Juan Mata ‘goal’ in Chelsea’s 5-1 win over Tottenham has renewed criticism of the current system, with other sports successfully using technology to ensure correct decisions are made.

Taylor feels that football should move with the times.

“The more that it goes on that we don’t use technology, the more perverse it’s looking for football – being the major spectator game throughout the whole world as well as being the major participant game,” he told Sky Sports.

“I don’t think the crowd would mind it at all, it’s in the best interests of the game and justice will be done. It’s so important as to whether a goal is scored, that’s the whole object of the game.

“People will say, and (UEFA president, Michel) Platini has said, that’s why he wants to use those officials behind the goal and has done so. I don’t see that as the way ahead and I don’t see that as a job for somebody who wants to be a referee or an assistant referee.

“When you see how successfully it’s been used in a game like rugby, league and union, as well as tennis and cricket, it’s what the modern sporting spectator expects – in the interests of seeing that justice is done and the right result.

“Controversy is always going to be part of the game, but I think the sooner it comes in the better.

“I know people will say it’s the thin edge of a wedge because the next point will be should it be a penalty, has a goal been scored, was it offside or not? That might be a debate for another day, but at least I think we should have that goal-line technology for starters.

Man United stars have the skills – see for yourself!

Ashley Young bagged a different kind of strike as some of Manchester United’s biggest names took part in a one-off game of football bowling for the latest Betfair Mobile advert.

Young takes on team-mates Dimitar Berbatov and Patrice Evra, who attempt to floor the ten pins using lightweight footballs. The superstar players are joined by couch potato and footballing wannabe Chris Weber, a clear rank outsider to win the contest.

Winger Young, 26, demonstrated the type of skill that has bowled over the Old Trafford faithful so far this season, while France defender Evra showed exactly why he has played at the highest level of English football for the past five years.

Ashley Young said: “It was harder than I thought it would be because of the weight of the ball and having to strike it so low over a relatively short length of space. Hats off to Patrice and Berba, they showed unbelievable skills. And all I can say about Chris is ‘he tried his best!’”

Fergie’s moves for £6m Spaniard, Aysal confirms United interest, Pogba would be wise to stay put – Best of MUFC

Manchester United is not a place you associate with slavery but this week Tomasz Kuszczak accused Sir Alex Ferguson of just that. Having realised his foolish ways the stopper has tried to deny reports that he said that but it is unlikely to have helped his chances of getting a game.

At FFC this week there’s been plenty of talk about the mindlessness of the keeper, the coincidence of last weekend’s celebratory fixture and why Paul Pogba should think twice before jumping ship.

We also have a selection of the best United blogs from across the web.
