Styris retires from international cricket

Scott Styris, the New Zealand allrounder, has announced his retirement from all international cricket

Scott Styris, the New Zealand allrounder, has announced his retirement from all international cricket. Styris, who will turn 36 next month, had retired from Tests in 2008, but continued playing one-day and Twenty20 internationals for New Zealand, and was part of their run to the semi-final during the 2011 World Cup. With 4483 runs from 188 ODIs, Styris is New Zealand’s sixth-highest run-getter in ODIs. He scored four centuries in the format and also took 137 wickets with his medium pace fare. He played 29 Tests and scored five centuries. His retirement comes at a time when New Zealand have just appointed a new captain in Ross Taylor. Styris said he reflected on his future after the World Cup and decided it was time for him to step aside as the team began a new era.”I have thoroughly enjoyed representing my country,” Styris said. “It has been an honour and a pleasure to play for New Zealand alongside so many quality players over the years and to have been a part of many key moments during that time.”Not being on the international circuit means more time at home and I’m really looking forward to spending more time with my family.”After the World Cup, Styris flew to India to play for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. Despite playing just two matches in their season, he said he intended to continue playing Twenty20 cricket in domestic competitions. “I really enjoy the T20 format of the game and see it as a way to stay involved in cricket for another year or two if I can.” He is currently playing for Essex in the Friends Life t20 in England and will play for Northern Knights in the HRV Cup in New Zealand later in the year.Styris, an integral part of New Zealand’s one-day side during the early 2000s, was in and out of the team between 2008 and 2010, but eventually made it to the squad for the 2011 World Cup. He could not however conjure up the form he had shown in previous World Cups; he averaged 45.75 in the 2003 edition, and scored a hundred and four fifties, in addition to taking nine wickets, in the 2007 edition.Though New Zealand have had a disappointing run in the recent past, Styris has been part of some important successes. He noted winning the ICC Champions Trophy in 2000, in Kenya, and scoring a hundred on Test debut at Port of Spain, in a series that ended up being New Zealand’s first Test series victory in the West Indies, as the highlights of his career. “Winning the Champions Trophy in Kenya was awesome given it was also the first time New Zealand won an ICC event. It was also memorable to score a hundred and take wickets on my Test debut, knowing it contributed to a historic series win.”New Zealand Cricket CEO Justin Vaughan said he was aware Styris’ departure was imminent for some time, and that the team would miss his consistency. “Scott has been one of our most consistent performers and a real go-to man in big games,” Vaughan said. “He was someone who always seemed to play his best under pressure. His competitive attitude and the leadership he demonstrated while in the New Zealand team will be missed.”However, we support his decision to retire from international cricket. It has been signalled for some time.”

Deccan prevail in low-scoring upset

For 19 overs, Deccan Chargers, out of the competition already, seemed to be going through their motions

How they were out
Amit Mishra hit Munaf Patel for four successive boundaries in the last over•AFP

For 19 overs Deccan Chargers, out of the competition already, seemed to be going through the motions. In the 20th, they came to life through Amit Mishra’s four successive boundaries off his India team-mate Munaf Patel. Mishra and his India spin rival Pragyan Ojha then bowled eight overs for 34 runs on a turning pitch, sucking the life out of Mumbai’s chase. A rollercoaster final over by IPL debutant Anand Rajan made for good drama too.Mumbai, pretty much like Deccan, woke up in the last two overs of their innings, with 42 required. Kieron Pollard and Harbhajan Singh took 16 off the 19th, and then Pollard got stuck into Rajan, who had earlier removed Sachin Tendulkar and TL Suman in the same over. Rajan was chosen to bowl that last over ahead of the overseas pro and expensively acquired Daniel Christian. Pollard hit the first length ball for a huge six. Rajan’s attempt at a yorker resulted in a leg-side wide. Pollard got a thick edge on the next, and dived a mile to complete the second run. Both teams’ scores after 19.2 overs were identical: 119 for 6.Pollard started doing what Mishra had, flicking a leg-side length ball for four. The debutant had to be under pressure, although an expressionless face didn’t give much away. Kumar Sangakkara and Ishant Sharma, fielding at a very straight mid-on, called conferences every ball. Rajan’s previous over had featured the wicket of the best batsman in the world. He was throwing it away now. Then came a smart slower ball, a split-finger one, outside off. This edge from Pollard carried to third man. Game over. Rajan didn’t go delirious celebrating in true IPL fashion. He just smiled. For a little less than the first half of the match, Deccan hadn’t had much to smile about. From the moment Michael Lumb lost his leg stump to Lasith Malinga in the first over, Deccan lived a stifled life. Not one of the main batsmen, except for Shikhar Dhawan, struck at a run a ball.Malinga and Harbhajan Singh were difficult to get away, and Dhawal Kulkarni sneaked in three wicket-taking deliveries. It seemed Mumbai had resumed normal service after their 87 all out in their previous game. Then Munaf began the last over, at 112 for 6. Dhawan hoisted the first ball for six. Munaf came back well with a yorker that brought Mishra on strike. This is where the game started turning. Munaf bowled a bouncer, and the top edge flew over the keeper’s head. Munaf had things to say to Mishra then, which didn’t quite go down well with the Deccan batsmen. Dhawan too joined in the exchange. An attempted yorker now ended up as a full toss, and ended up at the midwicket fence. This time Mishra was looking for Munaf. The next was half edged, half guided past the keeper. Mishra and Munaf collided on the pitch even as the ball reached the third man boundary. Another yorker went wrong, and another full toss was clipped for four.Deccan went into the defence with confidence. JP Duminy, who was beautifully done in by a loopy offbreak earlier in the match, bowled a beauty himself, opening the innings. That offbreak, pitching on leg, hitting off, removed Aiden Blizzard, and sent Mumbai into caution mode. Now with Mishra and Ojha turning the ball square, Deccan’s 135 started to look a good total.Ishant, too, chipped in with the wickets of Ambati Rayudu and Rohit Sharma. With wickets falling around him, Sachin Tendulkar seemed to be stuck between caution and aggression. He too tried to go after the debutant Rajan in the 16th over, with 60 still required. He punched him for four first ball, but then saw Suman perish to a slower one. To the last ball of the over, he moved across to try and pull, and was caught dead in front. Ojha and Mishra came back to give just 11 off the next two overs.Pollard’s hitting in the final two, which brought Mumbai teasingly close to a win, went on to emphasise that he should be batting higher for Mumbai, who are now out of the crucial top two on the points table.

John Hastings, the Australia allrounder who was bought by Kochi Tuskers Kerala for $20,000, has become the latest player to leave the IPL early following injury concerns. He will head back to Australia for a scan on his shoulder, and will not return this season.”Going home from the IPL to have a scan on my shoulder. There is a lot of cricket coming up,” he tweeted. “Hopefully next year I can play a part. But yes this year there will be no IPL for me.”Hastings didn’t get a game for Kochi in the one week that he was with the team, joining them after the tour of Bangladesh. He had been a part of Australia’s World Cup squad as well, but didn’t get a look-in during the tournament.Steven Smith, another Australian allrounder bought by Kochi, had been ruled out of the IPL a week ago since he had to undergo ankle surgery.Kochi are yet to seek replacements for their injured players. They had begun the season poorly with two losses, but bounced back with wins over highly rated Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. A victory over table-toppers Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday will put them level on points at the top.

Manoj Tiwary aims to step up for Kolkata

Bengal batsman Manoj Tiwary says he’ll be targeting several Man-of-the-Match performances in IPL 2011, while Kolkata Knight Riders will be concentrating on just making it past the group stage

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Apr-2011

Apart from batting consistently well, Manoj Tiwary is looking to contribute in the field too•Indian Premier League

Bengal batsman Manoj Tiwary has said he’ll be aiming for match-winning performances in the IPL this year, while his franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders – who are coming off three poor seasons – will be concentrating on making it past the group stage before thinking of a maiden title.”We have a new team and a new captain [Gautam Gambhir]. Our first goal would be qualify for the semis and then take the final two steps,” Tiwary told the . “Personally, I would be looking to score consistently and I’m targeting four or five Man-of-the-Match awards.”Tiwary captained Bengal to victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy – India’s domestic Twenty20 competition – this year. He played for Delhi Daredevils in the first two IPL seasons, before moving Kolkata in 2010 and will provide the main local connect for fans in the absence of Sourav Ganguly.”To be honest, I didn’t have a proper feel of the IPL in the first two seasons. In my first season with the Delhi Daredevils, I batted in the middle order where opportunities were rather limited – with Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Shikhar Dhawan in top form, the lower order didn’t have much to do,” he said. “In the second season, in South Africa, I got injured after playing just one match and didn’t play thereafter.”It was only after I moved to Kolkata Knight Riders in 2010 that I got a real feel of the competition. I learnt a lot about batting in T20 cricket from Brad Hodge.”Though predominantly a batsman and an agile fielder, Tiwary has filled the role of a handy part-time bowler on the domestic circuit and this is an aspect of his game he’ll be looking to further during the IPL. “I would be looking to contribute substantially in all three departments of the game.” In a Kolkata practice match earlier this week, Tiwary made 86 off 44 balls batting at No. 3, but he’s not certain of where he will bat in the line-up.”I was asked to open the innings [in 2010] which I was not accustomed to doing, but I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. It [opening the batting this season] depends on the role assigned to me by the team management.”The entry of Yusuf Pathan and Brett Lee gives the new-look Kolkata side an edge, Tiwary said. “We have a very balanced side [this year] and can go all the way. L Balaji is a very effective bowler in T20, while [Jaidev] Unadkat is quite sharp. And I am looking forward to playing alongside [Jacques] Kallis, [Brad] Haddin, [Eoin] Morgan, Shakib [Al Hasan] and [Ryan] ten Doeschate.”Kolkata take on Chennai Super Kings in the opening IPL match, on April 8 in Chennai.

Clarke and Hughes made 'supreme error of judgment'

Michael Clarke and Phillip Hughes made a “supreme error of judgment” in attending functions on the morning of Ashes Tests, according to Cricket Australia’s chief executive James Sutherland

Michael Clarke and Phillip Hughes attended a breakfast function on the first morning of the Boxing Day Test•AFP

Michael Clarke and Phillip Hughes made a “supreme error of judgment” in attending functions on the morning of Ashes Tests, according to Cricket Australia’s chief executive James Sutherland. The reported that the pair attended a Shane Warne Foundation breakfast on Boxing Day, and they were interviewed at 7.30am at Melbourne’s Crown Casino, before returning to the team hotel. When the match started three hours later, Hughes slashed to gully for 16 and Clarke wafted outside his off stump to be caught behind for 20. It was all part of Australia’s horror innings of 98 after they were sent in by Andrew Strauss, and with the series at 1-1, that morning was a turning point from which the Australians never recovered.Clarke also reportedly attended breakfast functions during the Sydney Test, where he was captain the absence of the injured Ricky Ponting. Sutherland, speaking on the Melbourne radio station 3AW, said it was not a wise move for the players to be involved in such events on the morning of a Test.”That was a supreme error of judgment on their part,” Sutherland said. “The players decided that of their own will. I would be surprised if we see that happening again. You don’t leave yourself open to the chance of criticism. As a professional footballer, you would never do that.”Sutherland also said it was “unfortunate” that the chairman of selectors, Andrew Hilditch, had said publicly after the 3-1 series drubbing that he felt his panel had done a good job. The selectors made some odd decisions, including axing Nathan Hauritz and playing Xavier Doherty and Michael Beer, who took a combined tally 4 for 418.”Andrew’s comments … were unfortunate, and I think what he was trying to say was the selectors had tried their hardest,” Sutherland said. “Everyone involved needs to take responsibility for what was a very disappointing performance.”
