Michael Clarke and Phillip Hughes made a “supreme error of judgment” in attending functions on the morning of Ashes Tests, according to Cricket Australia’s chief executive James Sutherland. The reported that the pair attended a Shane Warne Foundation breakfast on Boxing Day, and they were interviewed at 7.30am at Melbourne’s Crown Casino, before returning to the team hotel.When the match started three hours later, Hughes slashed to gully for 16 and Clarke wafted outside his off stump to be caught behind for 20. It was all part of Australia’s horror innings of 98 after they were sent in by Andrew Strauss, and with the series at 1-1, that morning was a turning point from which the Australians never recovered.Clarke also reportedly attended breakfast functions during the Sydney Test, where he was captain the absence of the injured Ricky Ponting. Sutherland, speaking on the Melbourne radio station 3AW, said it was not a wise move for the players to be involved in such events on the morning of a Test.”That was a supreme error of judgment on their part,” Sutherland said. “The players decided that of their own will. I would be surprised if we see that happening again. You don’t leave yourself open to the chance of criticism. As a professional footballer, you would never do that.”Sutherland also said it was “unfortunate” that the chairman of selectors, Andrew Hilditch, had said publicly after the 3-1 series drubbing that he felt his panel had done a good job. The selectors made some odd decisions, including axing Nathan Hauritz and playing Xavier Doherty and Michael Beer, who took a combined tally 4 for 418.”Andrew’s comments … were unfortunate, and I think what he was trying to say was the selectors had tried their hardest,” Sutherland said. “Everyone involved needs to take responsibility for what was a very disappointing performance.”

Bengal batsman Manoj Tiwary has said he’ll be aiming for match-winning performances in the IPL this year, while his franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders – who are coming off three poor seasons – will be concentrating on making it past the group stage before thinking of a maiden title.”We have a new team and a new captain [Gautam Gambhir]. Our first goal would be qualify for the semis and then take the final two steps,” Tiwary told the . “Personally, I would be looking to score consistently and I’m targeting four or five Man-of-the-Match awards.”Tiwary captained Bengal to victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy – India’s domestic Twenty20 competition – this year. He played for Delhi Daredevils in the first two IPL seasons, before moving Kolkata in 2010 and will provide the main local connect for fans in the absence of Sourav Ganguly.”To be honest, I didn’t have a proper feel of the IPL in the first two seasons. The ICC has asked its members to adopt, by April 2011, a domestic anti-corruption code in line with the council’s international code. This follows a proposal from the Pakistan Task Team (PTT), which met with the board via teleconference today to discuss the PCB’s progress in implementing the changes required by the ICC in the wake of the spot-fixing scandal.Haroon Lorgat, the ICC’s chief executive, said he had written to all the members in October requesting them to review their anti-corruption procedures and, where necessary, introduce new measures. He said the ICC had prepared a template domestic code – incorporating the essence of its existing Anti-Corruption Code – for use in countries lacking their own set of rules. Countries having a code in place should review it for adequacy.The ICC has asked its members to review their structures to deal with integrity issues; on-going education planning and delivery; reporting of integrity concerns in domestic cricket and the vetting of player agents. “All members have a responsibility to demonstrate leadership and good practice in protecting the integrity of the sport at domestic and international level,” Lorgat said.The board said it was satisfied with the progress being made by the PTT and the PCB, which has already established an integrity committee and appointed an integrity officer, saying the PCB has either implemented or begun to implement the ICC’s requirements within the 30-day deadline. The PTT is also working on providing recommendations to help the Pakistan board restore confidence in its administration, but reiterated that team selection is solely the responsibility of the national boards.

Rangers chief executive Ross Wilson made a number of moves in the January transfer window to bolster Gio van Bronckhorst’s squad at Ibrox.

The lack of impact they have made on the first team may have Wilson thinking about what he could have done differently in the January window. Perhaps there were players he wanted to sign but couldn’t, or possibly some he looked at but decided against and he now regrets his decisions.
