Gayle ponders Test future

Chris Gayle has said that he wasn’t looking to remain the West Indies captain for a long period of time and would be “giving it up shortly” because of the pressure the job entailed

Chris Gayle has said that he doesn’t want to captain West Indies for much longer because of the pressure the job entailed, and has hinted he may give up playing Test cricket to concentrate on a career in the Twenty20 format. In a candid interview with The Guardian, Gayle also said that he “wouldn’t be so sad” if Test cricket eventually gave way to the Twenty20 version and hit back at Andrew Strauss, who had criticised the West Indies captain for arriving from the IPL just two days before the start of the Lord’s Test, asking the England captain to “stay out of [other] people’s business”.”To be honest with you there’s a possibility I might give it [captaincy] up – I will be giving it up shortly,” Gayle told the Guardian. “It’s definitely not something I’m looking to hang on to. I need some time for myself, to be honest with you, it’s a lot of travelling. There’s always something you have to go and do, you know, extra. Lunch or dinner, some other thing, there’s always something for the captain. I’m not that type of person. I can’t take on too much. So soon I will be handing over this captaincy. I [will] soon finish with it.”Gayle, who took over the captaincy from Ramnaresh Sarwan in 2007, said he was looking for potential successors. “We’re still looking at quite a few,” he said. “So we just have to wait and see when the selectors decide – or whosoever decides. Then I’m ready. The chairman pointed out to me they want me to actually be the captain for right now. We have to see how it goes. I said, ‘Don’t be too long, though’.”Speaking on the eve of the Chester-le-Street Test, Gayle claimed he had been misquoted in the interview, but reiterated his personal stance on the longer form of the game. “Test cricket is always going to be there, but they were my views on Test cricket as an individual,” he told reporters at the Riverside. “I don’t see myself playing Tests for any long period of time. I think Test cricket will always be there.”Twenty20 has come onboard and it’s made a huge impact on the world, it’s brilliant, games have been sold out and it has taken the place by storm. I look at Test cricket differently, I don’t see it as long term for me, just for me, I’m just speaking about myself.”Gayle took over the captaincy in the absence of Sarwan who was injured for the ODI series against England in 2007. The West Indies board initially rejected the selectors’ move to appoint Gayle before reversing its decision. Gayle revealed that he was reluctant to take over the captaincy and had to be persuaded into the role. “At the time when I was asked I didn’t want to be the captain,” he said. “That’s when it all started. We won the series and then I said to them, whenever Sarwan is fully fit, I am ready to step down. Maybe they saw something different, something totally different, and they asked me to be captain.”I thought hard about it. I didn’t want to be captain. I wanted to have more free time. I didn’t want that added pressure at that particular time, but they actually insist, insist, insist, so I said OK. So I thought, just get on with it.”Gayle was then preferred as captain over Sarwan for the 2007-08 tour of South Africa. He resigned at a West Indies directors’ meeting last July following the home series against Australia due to disagreements over selection but was persuaded to stay on by WICB president Julian Hunte.Gayle was the subject of much criticism for extending his IPL stint with the Kolkata Knight Riders and joining his West Indies team-mates only 48 hours before the first Test at Lord’s, a match which they lost inside three days. Strauss had said that “we wouldn’t want our players to arrive two days before” a Test. He added that it was important for Test cricket to get the attention it deserved and that it shouldn’t be devalued in “any way, shape or form”.Gayle, however, responded to Strauss’s comments by saying that the matter “doesn’t concern him”. “Focus on his team, don’t worry about West Indies, don’t worry about me. Tell him don’t sleep with Chris on his mind, tell him get Chris off his mind,” Gayle said. While Gayle said he wouldn’t be worried if the primacy of Test cricket were to be reduced, he said Strauss ought to be because the England captain may not be able to adapt to the shorter format. Strauss, who is England’s Test and ODI captain, isn’t part of the squad for the World Twenty20 in June.”I wouldn’t be so sad [about the demise of Test cricket],” Gayle said. “Some other players would be. Maybe Andrew Strauss would be sad. Maybe he will be sad if Test cricket dies and Twenty20 comes in. Because there is no way he can make the change. So tough luck. I like Twenty20. Who doesn’t? Maybe a couple of the Englishmen wouldn’t like to play Twenty20.”Responding to Gayle’s criticism of his comments, Strauss said: “It’s more his issue than anything to do with the England team to be honest. I certainly feel that Test cricket is the primary format of the game.”I think the majority of the cricketers around the world feel that and certainly all the cricketers in the England team feel that as well. My view prior to the last Test match was, if that is the case, it needs to get the attention it deserves in terms of preparation and my views haven’t changed on that..”What does concern me is the future of the game of cricket and I believe very strongly Test cricket should continue to be the number one format of the game. It’s the only game that really tests out your temperament, your technique, your hunger, your bravery, all those aspects of the game.”

Newcastle manager news on Garcia

A new name has been put forward in the Newcastle United manager hunt in the form of Rudi Garcia.

The Lowdown: So many names…

As per The Daily Mail, there have been countless names mentioned as potential successors to Steve Bruce after he left his role at St. James’ Park on Wednesday morning.

Unai Emery, Roberto Martinez, Steven Gerrard and Paulo Fonseca have all been linked with the job, according to the publication.

The Latest: Garcia emerges

The Daily Mail has now revealed that Garcia is the newest name to have been put forward for the vacant post, having been out of work since leaving Lyon this summer.

Journalist and transfer insider Pedro Almeida has recently fuelled speculation that a Frenchman is set to be the next manager in the North East, and of course, Garcia would fit that bill.

The Verdict: Wait for someone better

With the kind of names that have been linked with the job on Tyneside in recent days, the Magpies are better off waiting for someone better to become available than Garcia.

He has an impressive overall win rate as a manager at 48.5%, but has only won a mere two major trophies in his managerial career, both of whom came over a decade ago with Lille (Transfermarkt).

The fact that the biggest transfer fee that he has played for a player is £26.37m for Dimitri Payet also suggests that he may be overwhelmed by the abundance of riches that the new owners will likely give their manager to spend, and so Garcia should not be a priority for them as of now.

Lumb ton inspires Hampshire

A powerful batting display from Hampshire, led by Michael Lumb’s 100, propelled them into the Friends Provident Trophy semi-finals as they proved too good for a Middlesex team missing key players

A powerful batting display from Hampshire, led by Michael Lumb’s 100, propelled them into the Friends Provident Trophy semi-finals as they proved too good for a Middlesex team missing key players. Lumb and Jimmy Adams added an opening stand of 154, while there was a strong finish from Liam Dawson as Hampshire reached an imposing 310. The visitors’ inexperience batting line-up couldn’t keep up the chase. It was a commendable effort by Middlesex to hunt down a huge target without the services of Phil Hughes (back in Australia), Owais Shah and Eoin Morgan (both on England duty) after each of that trio had played key innings at various times in the qualifying stage. Without them, Middlesex had to draft in Billy Godleman, who had previously lost his one-day place, and 19-year-old Sam Robson.Godleman fell early in the chase, but Robson combined with Neil Dexter to give Middlesex a chance. They added 89 for the third wicket and kept the asking rate within reasonable bounds. However, Robson fell when he tried to cut Dawson and the middle order lost momentum. The normally free-flowing Dawid Malan laboured for 19 off 39 balls and three quick wickets then put paid to any slim hopes of success.Malan was removed by Billy Taylor and shortly after Dexter picked out midwicket against Imran Tahir for 78. Taylor showed all his experience when he bowled Shaun Udal and Hampshire were home and dryUdal, the Middlesex captain, made a surprise move by opening the bowling on a dry surface after Hampshire batted first. However, that experiment lasted just one over before the quicks took over and the Hampshire openers began to make hay. The run rate was soon above a run-a-ball and the visitors missed the experience of Tim Murtagh.Steven Finn made the breakthrough when he bowled Adams but Hampshire eased past 200 as Lumb reached his century off 97 balls. However, when he was stumped next ball off Malan the pace slowed a little as Udal picked up two quick wickets. But there was a final flourish from the home side as Michael Carberry and Dawson added 90 for the fifth wicket. Dawson again caught the eye with 51 off 37 balls and it was an innings that proved vital.

Sheffield Wednesday dealt injury blow

Sheffield Wednesday have racked up a mixed bag of results in their League One campaign with five wins, three draws and three defeats from 11 games played, putting them in ninth place in the league table.

Despite seeing his side secure a 1-0 victory away at Bolton Wanderers in their latest League One match thanks to a goal from Lee Gregory, Owls manager Darren Moore was unfortunately handed a double injury blow in the clash.

What’s the news?

During the match against Bolton, Wednesday duo Lewis Gibson and Sam Hutchinson had to be replaced at halftime due to injury after starting the match at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Speaking after Saturday’s match, Moore said that the injuries were muscle-related and that both players will be assessed today (Monday) to find out the extent and seriousness of the issues.

Further setbacks

With Gibson having struggled with his fitness since arriving at the Yorkshire club back in August on a loan deal from Everton’s U23 side, it’s a real shame to see him pick up this latest injury.

Additionally, Hutchinson has also had some fitness issues this season.

Taking this into account, we feel the setbacks of both of these players is starting to become an issue for the team now, which Moore will have to deal with moving forward.

Looking ahead to Wednesday’s next League One match against AFC Wimbledon at the weekend, Moore will have to make some changes to the starting XI that faced Bolton if Hutchinson and Gibson end up being unavailable to play in the game due to their new concerns.

With Wednesday duo Cheyenne Dunkley and Dennis Adeniran replacing Hutchinson and Gibson for the second half of the match against Bolton, it seems likely that Moore will have to pick those two from the start against Wimbledon depending on the extent of Gibson and Hutchinson’s latest injury problems.

However, with Wednesday chasing a promotion place back to the Championship, Moore will undoubtedly need all of his squad players available to him for selection to give the club the best chance of achieving that. That’s precisely why he’ll be gutted over recent developments.

Por outro lado, o atacante Clayson não foi substituído por conta de alguma lesão. Ele sentiu apenas câimbras durante o segundo tempo da partida.

Cricinfo previews Pakistan’s prospects for the women’s World Cup 2009

This will be Pakistan’s first World Cup since 1997 and more than anything the players will be looking to soak up the atmosphere and see what it’s like to play the big names. But a good performance cannot be secondary to that. After all, unless they reach the Super Sixes, Pakistan will be returning home with only four games under their belt – three group matches and a play-off.Since qualifying for the World Cup early in 2008, Pakistan have played only two tournaments – the Asia Cup and the tri-series in Bangladesh. Their home series against West Indies in November 2008 was cancelled because of security concerns.Playing a World Cup every four years is not going to help the players raise their standards so what they need to do in Australia is show other teams that they are worth playing against. In short, they need to get noticed, but that won’t be easy.Although Pakistan come to Australia with some match practice, having played the tri-series in Bangladesh in February, they do not have the wins to boost their confidence. The only major opposition they have beaten is West Indies in Karachi in 2004. The tri-series would have given them time to analyse Sri Lanka’s weaknesses and they will hope to target them in Australia.England A team they have played only once since making their first one-day appearance in 1997.

Everton not planning Benitez to Newcastle

Some Everton fans have been left buzzing as some news emerged involving Rafa Benitez.

Writing in his latest piece for The Liverpool Echo, Phil Kirkbride has now revealed that the Goodison Park faithful are not anticipating an approach from Newcastle United for their manager.

The Spaniard has reportedly been linked with a stunning move back to St. James’ Park after the takeover by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium was completed, but now it seems unlikely that he will be their next boss.

The news has come as a welcome relief to some supporters of the Merseyside club, given the fact that Benitez has started very well, as his team currently sit in a healthy fifth place in the table in the Premier League at the moment.
