Fabrizio Romano drops Nuno Mendes update

Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed the latest news on Manchester City’s interest in Sporting Lisbon left-back Nuno Mendes, and it seems as if Pep Guardiola is still desperate to add the teenager to his squad at the Etihad Stadium.

What’s the word?

City have regularly been linked with a move for the 19-year-old throughout the summer and Romano shared the latest on a potential transfer on his Twitter earlier this week, writing: “Manchester City are interested in signing Nuno Mendes. He’s considered a top left-back for the future – but the City board have no intention to pay the full €50m price tag to Sporting.

“Sporting are not accepting any proposal around €30m, as of today. Race still open.”

Would Mendes be a good signing?

Mendes has established himself as one of the brightest young talents in European football in recent seasons and played a huge part in Sporting’s impressive title win last season, despite only turning 19 earlier this month.

The Portuguese full-back made 29 appearances in Liga NOS, contributing one goal and one assist and averaging a superb 7.24 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

This was enough to rank him as the third-best performer in Rúben Amorim’s squad, which emphasises just how important he has become at Estádio José Alvalade, and it is no surprise that City are showing such a keen interest in him.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-manchester-city-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Manchester City transfer rumours and news!”]

Although Guardiola has the likes of Joao Cancelo, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Nathan Ake and Benjamin Mendy available to him at left-back for the 2021/22 campaign, you could argue that only Mendy is a natural in that position, which is hardly ideal given his injury issues.

Therefore, it would make a lot of sense to sign someone such as Mendes, for if he proves to be a success, he could easily nail down a starting spot at the Etihad for the next few years, which suggests that he would be well worth the investment.

Although Romano’s update suggests that City aren’t willing to meet Sporting’s demands at the moment, this certainly seems like a transfer which could happen if negotiations progress. Considering Mendes’ obvious potential, City fans may be very excited about the prospect of the “outstanding” youngster (in the words of his former coach Diego Goncalves) joining Guardiola’s squad.

Nixon drops West Brom update on Adam Reach

West Bromwich Albion are battling to secure a move to bring Adam Reach to the Hawthorns this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Alan Nixon, with The Sun journalist revealing in a post on Twitter that Albion are fighting Blackburn Rovers for the signature of the former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder, who is a free agent after leaving the Owls at the end of last season.

In response to a fan asking whether Rovers were close to signing anyone this summer, Nixon said: “[Blackburn are] still in Reach race despite the West Brom interest.”

Reach could solve problem

With Valerien Ismael often setting Barnsley up in a 3-4-2-1 formation last season, it would appear logical to assume that the Frenchman may well look to once again call upon this formation following his appointment at West Brom.

And, although Reach was playing his football for a Sheffield Wednesday side who ultimately finished bottom of the Championship last term, the 28-year-old nevertheless demonstrated he possesses a significant amount of ability, while the left midfielder’s positional versatility could also solve something of a problem for the 45-year-old Albion manager.

Indeed, over his 44 Championship appearances for the Owls last season, the £2.52m-rated man scored five goals, registered three assists and created five big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.3 shots and making 0.8 key passes per game.

The man Tony Pulis dubbed a “top player” also impressed in a defensive capacity, making an average of 0.9 interceptions, one tackle, one clearance and winning 2.8 duels per match.

These returns saw the £23k-per-week midfielder earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.82, ranking him as Darren Moore’s sixth-best performer in the second tier of English football.

As such, it would very much appear as if Reach would be capable of doing a job for West Brom, but, the exact job he may be asked to perform is what could make the former England U20 international an extremely astute piece of business by Ismael.

Indeed, with the Frenchman stating shortly after his arrival at the club that he doesn’t “need the most expensive player or the best player” but rather the “right player for the position,” Reach looks as if he could be something of a perfect candidate for the role as the 45-year-old’s left wing-back.

And, with only Conor Townsend in the Albion squad who is a natural left-back, it would very much seem as if Ismael will require far greater depth in the position over the course of an arduous Championship campaign.

So, all of the above would lead us to believe that the signing of Reach could solve one of the manager’s big issues at The Hawthorns ahead of next season, and, with the 28-year-old being available on a free transfer, he would also represent something of a bargain.

Tottenham: Spurs eye Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a move for Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar as their summer recruitment drive intensifies [Daily Express].

The Lowdown: Spurs get busy ahead of 2021/22

Looking towards 2021/22, Lilywhites fans will be desperate to see how newly appointed manager Nuno Espirito Santo adapts to life in North London.

Making inroads in the transfer market, the Lilywhites are reportedly close to agreeing a deal to sign Bologna centre-back Takehiro Tomiyasu [Football 365].

But could Spurs now be set to make progress in the pursuit of another rumoured target following the latest reports?

The Latest: Spurs keen on moving for Aouar

Presently, the north Londoners are said to be keen on making a move for 23-year-old Aouar [Daily Express], while they are also keeping an eye on Lille’s Renato Sanches.

He is rumoured to be available for around £20 million, and is keen to move on to pastures new this summer.

Aouar has also been extensively linked with a switch to divisional rivals Arsenal and also Liverpool in recent times.

The Verdict: Signing Aouar would be an astute piece of business by Tottenham Hotspur

The France international would bring some much-needed impetus from midfield to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

In 2020/21, the playmaker backed this up by registering 12 goal contributions in 33 games for his current employers; eight goals and four assists [Transfermarkt].

Impressing with his offensive output from midfield, Aouar was a constant threat, producing an average of 2.3 shots on goal per match across the campaign [WhoScored].

Fitting into Nuno’s high-octane style of counter-attacking football, his propensity to move the ball effectively shone through as he achieved an 86% passing accuracy across the season [WhoScored].

Once labelled as “incredible” by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, following an excellent display against the Blues for Lyon in the Champions League, he should be a priority target for the Spurs hierarchy [Sky Sports].

In other news, Tottenham Hotspur have enquired about a Serie A ace.

Hussain admits: We underestimated Sri Lanka

England captain Nasser Hussain admitted that everyone had underestimated Sri Lanka and that there was a lot of hard work ahead of his team for the rest of the Test series

Saadi Thawfeeq22-May-2002England captain Nasser Hussain admitted that everyone had underestimated Sri Lanka and that there was a lot of hard work ahead of his team for the rest of the Test series.”This game has just shown how much of hardwork we’ve got ahead of us, especially against this opposition. I think everyone’s underestimated them and they keep notching up 500s. That goes to show just how much of hard work we’ve got a head of us,” said Hussain at a press conference held at the end of the first cricket Test which ended in a draw at Lord’s here yesterday.Sri Lanka scored 555 for 8 declared and 42 for one wicket. England replied with 275 and 529 for 5 declared.”On Test wickets against these batsmen you need to put six balls in the right area all the time, and we didn’t do that. It’s got nothing to do with match practice. All our bowlers bowled more than the Sri Lankan bowlers had. One thing they didn’t do not due to lack of practice or not being ready is, they didn’t show the discipline that is needed. It was shown by the Sri Lankan side. They were bowling just outside off stump and we didn’t do that,” he said.”We have to work out how we are going to get 20 wickets on flat Test wickets like this. There is a difference on a flat wicket at Lord’s and a flat wicket in the subcontinent where you are going to get turn and the spinner gives you something to look forward to. Playing a spinner at Lord’s would have given you absolutely nothing in this game. The ball didn’t turn at all. In fact Aravinda (de Silva) was going past the outside edge more than the inside edge,” Hussain said. The England captain admitted that his team did not perform well on the first three days of the Test, but was very pleased the way they came back on the final two days.”We were fairly innocuous with the ball for two days and dropped some catches. To be 275 all out on a flat track against Sri Lanka without (Muttiah) Muralitharan was not good enough. We didn’t play particularly well on the first three days, whereas Sri Lanka did exceptionally. I think we showed a bit of character and a bit of fight on the last two days.Everything I asked for and the coach asked for and, the boys asked for themselves came right. There weren’t a great number of wicket-taking balls around but it was not easy at all because there were not many run scoring opportunities. It took real dedication and discipline from our batting. Batting with discipline on these wickets is what is all about. There was talk of pride and the players put it right,” said Hussain. Although he was pleased with England’s second innings performance Hussain said it didn’t mean that his side went to Edgbaston for the second Test starting on May 30 holding the upperhand.Hussain’s counterpart Sanath Jayasuriya said that he was happy with the overall performance of his team.”Everything went as we planned although we could not get England out a second time. If Murali was in the side it may have been different. You never know,” said Jayasuriya.”I am happy the way we played. We are going to Edgbaston with a lot of confidence. I am not surprised at our performance because all the batsmen got runs ahead of the Test series. They’ve been in good form. The only problem we had was with our bowlers who did not have much bowling practice,” he said.Jayasuriya said that he was not disappointed that Sri Lanka’s winning sequence of nine wins in a row had ended. “As long as we are doing well that is what matters,” he said. When questioned whether he was overcautious not attacking the English batsmen on the final day, Jayasuriya replied: “We had a plan not to give too many runs to England and we played according to that plan. I would have been happy if we could have won, but I don’t mind a draw”. Jayasuriya described the Lord’s pitch as the one of the best wickets he had played on. “You can keep going on and on. It is the best wicket we had got on the tour,” he said.He said he didn’t open in the Sri Lanka second innings because he had damaged ligaments in his hand, which he hurt while fielding and did not want to take a risk. He said the he would be fit for the second Test starting in nine days time.Jayasuriya said that Muralitharan would not play in the 4-day game against Glamorgan starting at Cardiff on Thursday because he is currently undergoing physiotherapy for his injured left arm. However he said that fast bowler Dilhara Fernando who has recoveredfrom a stress fracture injury in his back would play.

Rain and bad light holds up an odd day at Bath

It was an odd day at the Bath Recreation Ground as in-between stoppages for rain and bad light, the game progressed, but not in a way that many of the patient crowd had expected.

Victor Isaacs14-Jun-2002It was an odd day at the Bath Recreation Ground as in-between stoppages for rain and bad light, the game progressed, but not in a way that many of the patient crowd had expected.Somerset soon lost their overnight savour Ian Blackwell when he fell to a sucker punch, being caught by Udal at backward point off Mascarenhas. He had played exactly the same shot the ball before which went for four.Robert Turner and Keith Dutch shared a 41-run partnership at two runs per over to show some signs of recovery but when three wickets fell in quick succession, either side of a length rain break shortly after the lunch interval, Somerset captain surprised everyone at the ground, including the Hampshire fielders by declaring, 91 runs behind. The crowd were so surprised, that some of them even booed the umpires, as they thought they had been brought off for bad light! On a wicket that had been playing tricks from the first day, with overcast conditions, some thought that the boldness of the declaration was sheer folly. However, the home side took four Hampshire wickets for just three runs, before bad light curtailed play for the day.Derek Kenway was first to go when he attempted to hook Richard Johnson’s first ball into the Bath Rugby Club, but was well caught on the boundary edge. White edged Johnson to keeper Turner and when Kendall and Laney fell off successive Matthew Bulbeck deliveries, Nic Pothas survived the hat-trick ball.Hampshire finished the day, however, still in a good position, 94 runs ahead with six wicket in hand, but will be looking for a least another 100 runs which on that Bath wicket could be enough to secure a much-needed victory.
