Journalist drops Leeds update on Adam Forshaw

Leeds United have been handed a major update on Adam Forshaw and his future at Elland Road.

What’s the story?

The midfielder has endured a difficult spell at Marcelo Bielsa’s side for well over a year now, with injuries seeing him miss the entire Premier League season – in fact, his only appearance came at Premier League 2 level when he was given a run-out against Villa’s U23s back in mid-April.

And now, responding to a question about where things stand with the 29-year-old, Leeds Live’s Beren Cross said: “No word on Forshaw since he suffered that issue Bielsa mentioned in the days after the under-23s win over Villa. Fingers are crossed for him. Pre-season is huge for him if he can keep pace with the others coming back to start the new programme.”

Bielsa needs him

Speaking towards the end of last season, Bielsa himself said: “He has basically been not playing for two seasons and to be able to play 90 minutes at a high competition after being healthy – there is still a while to go before you’re ready for that.

“He’s healthy, and has two months left of the season to prove that he is finally over his issues. We all hope it will be like this, because he is a very important player and he has made a massive effort to overcome the situation that he’s been through.”

And, after his display against Villa, Cross noted: “Playing in the role fans will associate with Stuart Dallas or Mateusz Klich in the first team, Forshaw had the freedom to get forward as well as defend.

“It was a polished performance with an array of long and short-range passing, as well as some crunching tackles and one memorable 50-50 he did not shirk, which underlines the confidence he has with his body.”

Given the fact Leeds don’t have natural cover for Kalvin Phillips, and a new central midfielder still having yet to be signed, Forshaw’s comeback from injury is a timely one.

Bielsa needs a player with his experience to return to the first-team squad and offer him another vital option in the middle of the park, and Cross’ update on him should have Leeds fans paying close attention to how things pan out with Forshaw.

Meanwhile, Leeds United are eyeing this Championship starlet…

Everton manager update on Benitez

Many Everton fans have been left to fume as a manager update emerged on Rafa Benitez.

Writing in his latest piece for The Times, Paul Joyce has shared that the Spaniard has held further talks with the Goodison Park faithful’s hierarchy and remains in pole position to become their next boss, following the departure of Carlo Ancelotti to Real Madrid.

Farhad Moshiri and his associates continue to see Benitez as the coach to take the Merseyside club forward, as he has now had four rounds of talks with the Toffees despite fan backlash.

It is understandable why so many supporters are against Benitez’s potential appointment, given his past connections with Liverpool, with whom he won the UEFA Champions League with in the 2004/05 term, while he previously called the Blues a ‘small club’ after a draw in the Merseyside derby back in February 2007.

“This is the most distant I’ve ever felt from the club, getting Rafa will end in tears. I won’t be bothering no more if he is employed by the club. Fans say Dunc isn’t ready but give me a manager who we can all get behind. Them derby defeats will be a billion times worse under Rafa”

West Ham receive Milenkovic transfer boost

According to journalist Paolo Bargiggia, West Ham United transfer target Nikola Milenkovic could be available for a fee of just €10m (£8.6m) this summer.

The Lowdown: Hammers eye Milenkovic

West Ham are reportedly heavily interested in signing the Fiorentina defender this summer (Hammers News via Juve Live).

There has now been a positive update provided on the Irons’ pursuit of the Serbia international.

The Latest: West Ham set for bargain fee

It has been said that West Ham could receive a huge discount for to the centre-back.

He is currently valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt but, as per Bargiggia, he could be available for a fee of just €10m (£8.6m) – that would represent a discount of 55.6% on his market value.

The Verdict: Get it done

There should now be no doubt in the minds of David Moyes and co – they must get this deal done. For such a fee, they will struggle find a better deal this summer. Since making the move to Fiorentina in 2017, Milenkovic has made 133 appearances for the club in all competitions (Transfermarkt) – in the last three campaigns, he has missed just seven league matches.

The 23-year-old has even been compared to Serbian compatriot Nemanja Vidic, who enjoyed an illustrious career with Manchester United (ESPN). Of course, there is no guarantee he will match that level of success, but even if he turned out to be half the player the 39-year-old proved to be, he would be a top signing for West Ham.

In other news, many West Ham fans want the club to sign this striker.

England's county competitions: an introduction

The English county system takes in four major competitions during the course of the northern domestic summer

John Polack12-Apr-2002The English county system takes in four major competitions during the course of the northern domestic summer. The oldest and most famous of these is the first-class competition, known this year as the Frizzell County Championship. The other three – the Benson & Hedges Cup, the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy, and the Norwich Union League – are all one-day competitions but each assumes a different format.Frizzell County Championship – this is England’s major first-class competition and consists of a series of four-day matches. The 18 county teams are split into two groups – Division One and Division Two – on the basis of their finishing positions the previous season. The top nine counties from last year are joined in battle in Division One; the bottom nine are grouped to form Division Two, as follows:Division One: Kent, Hampshire, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Somerset, Surrey, Sussex, Warwickshire and Yorkshire.Division Two: Derbyshire, Durham, Essex, Glamorgan, Gloucestershire, Middlesex, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and Worcestershire. The side which finishes at the top of the Division One standings at the end of the season is the winner of the competition. There is also a promotion and relegation component. The three sides which finish at the bottom of Division One are relegated to Division Two for 2003. Conversely, the three sides which end at the top of the Division Two standings are promoted to Division One for 2003.Benson & Hedges Cup – a limited-overs competition which incorporates two separate phases. The county teams are initially divided into three groups of six (as shown below) and take part in a round-robin series of matches against opponents from within those groups.North: Derbyshire, Durham, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire.Midland/Wales/West: Glamorgan, Northamptonshire, Somerset, Worcestershire and Warwickshire.South: Essex, Hampshire, Kent, Middlesex, Surrey and Sussex. At the end of these matches, the top two teams from each pool go forward to the quarter-finals. Joining them are the two teams which finish third in their groups and attain more points than the other third-placed finisher. The quarter-finals and semi-finals are knockout affairs and precede a Final at Lord’s on 22 June. All of the matches are scheduled as 50-overs-per-side.The 2002 season is scheduled to be the last in which the Benson & Hedges Cup is played. Under a series of recommendations recently adopted by the England and Wales Cricket Board, it is due to be replaced by a 20-over competition at the start of 2003.Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy – sponsored by a major financial services company, this is a straight knockout competition which pits the 18 counties against minor county teams and county board sides, many of which are purely amateur teams. Each of the 18 major county teams receives a bye through to the third round of a competition that could loosely be depicted as cricket’s version of the FA Cup. Like the Benson and Hedges Cup, the matches are played over a total of 100 overs and the Final is contested at Lord’s, although this decider comes far later in the season – on 31 August.Norwich Union League – this is the most time-intensive of all three of the one-day competitions in that its programme lasts from 12 May until 22 September.Complete with coloured clothing, floodlit matches and nicknames for all of the teams, the competition shares a number of traits with many of the world’s major domestic one-day series. Where it differs is in the notion that the matches are 45-over-per-side contests.Like the County Championship, the competition is split into two divisions and promotion and relegation is a feature.Based on the teams’ finishing positions at the end of last summer, the divisions have been configured as follows for 2002:Division One: Durham Dynamos, Glamorgan Dragons, Kent Spitfires, Leicestershire Foxes, Nottinghamshire Outlaws, Somerset Sabres, Warwickshire Bears, Worcestershire Royals and Yorkshire Phoenix.Division Two: Derbyshire Scorpions, Essex Eagles, Gloucestershire Gladiators, Hampshire Hawks, Lancashire Lightning, Middlesex Crusaders, Northamptonshire Steelbacks, Surrey Lions, Sussex Sharks.Again, the champion team is the one that ends the season at the head of the Division One standings. The 2002 English domestic season commences on 13 April and will conclude on 22 September.
