Tottenham: Spurs eye Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a move for Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar as their summer recruitment drive intensifies [Daily Express].

The Lowdown: Spurs get busy ahead of 2021/22

Looking towards 2021/22, Lilywhites fans will be desperate to see how newly appointed manager Nuno Espirito Santo adapts to life in North London.

Making inroads in the transfer market, the Lilywhites are reportedly close to agreeing a deal to sign Bologna centre-back Takehiro Tomiyasu [Football 365].

But could Spurs now be set to make progress in the pursuit of another rumoured target following the latest reports?

The Latest: Spurs keen on moving for Aouar

Presently, the north Londoners are said to be keen on making a move for 23-year-old Aouar [Daily Express], while they are also keeping an eye on Lille’s Renato Sanches.

He is rumoured to be available for around £20 million, and is keen to move on to pastures new this summer.

Aouar has also been extensively linked with a switch to divisional rivals Arsenal and also Liverpool in recent times.

The Verdict: Signing Aouar would be an astute piece of business by Tottenham Hotspur

The France international would bring some much-needed impetus from midfield to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

In 2020/21, the playmaker backed this up by registering 12 goal contributions in 33 games for his current employers; eight goals and four assists [Transfermarkt].

Impressing with his offensive output from midfield, Aouar was a constant threat, producing an average of 2.3 shots on goal per match across the campaign [WhoScored].

Fitting into Nuno’s high-octane style of counter-attacking football, his propensity to move the ball effectively shone through as he achieved an 86% passing accuracy across the season [WhoScored].

Once labelled as “incredible” by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, following an excellent display against the Blues for Lyon in the Champions League, he should be a priority target for the Spurs hierarchy [Sky Sports].

India win by four wickets as Sri Lanka go out of the NatWest

For a side that had to win this match to maintain a chance of reaching the final, Sri Lanka produced a totally inept batting performance, only to fight back well with the ball to keep their hopes alive to the very end

Ralph Dellor06-Jul-2002For a side that had to win this match to maintain a chance of reaching the final, Sri Lanka produced a totally inept batting performance, only to fight back well with the ball to keep their hopes alive to the very end. Well though India bowled on a pitch offering considerable help to the seam bowlers, a succession of batsmen did nothing to help by playing what could only be described as injudicious and technically inadequate strokes to end the innings on 187 with ten balls unused. At the fall of Sachin Tendulkar’s wicket, however, Sri Lanka were right back in it, only to run out of fire power as India won, slightly nervously, by four wickets with 11 balls to spare.Sanath Jayasuriya began the Sri Lankan innings by continuing in the form he had re-discovered against England at Headingley. The second ball he received from Zaheer Khan was short and very wide of the off stump. The Sri Lankan captain launched himself at it with a cut that took the ball several rows back into the crowd at point for an extraordinary six.At the other end, Ashish Nehra was finding considerable lateral movement with the ball and had Jayasuriya dropped at second slip by Dinesh Mongia as he slashed yet again. However, Nehra got his revenge when Jayasuriya again waved his bat outside the off stump only to get a bottom edge that dragged the ball onto his wicket.Three overs later, Ajit Agarkar was introduced into the attack and with his first ball induced Romesh Kaluwitharana to chase a wide one and edge to the wicket-keeper. Kaluwitharana looks a mere shadow of the batsmen who terrorised attacks a few years ago and is doing little for the Sri Lankan cause. It was left to Marvan Atapattu and Mahela Jayawardene to apply more conventional technique to the art of batting as they revived the innings with a fifty partnership with elegant rather than excessive strokes to stabilise the position for Sri Lanka. After Marvan Atapattu and Mahela Jayawardene had added 84 for the third wicket, albeit from 118 balls, both batsmen were dismissed in the space of nine balls bowled by Anil Kumble. With the score on 125, Jayawardene gave himself room to hit Kumble inside-out over the covers only to give Ashish Nehra a catch at long off.Atapattu went to his fifty from 70 balls, but before his score had advanced he was beaten in the flight to be bowled by Anil Kumble with a ball that might have just come back into the batsman off the pitch. There was an obvious need for Sri Lanka to rebuild once again rather than pressing on, even though their scoring rate was well below what they might have wanted. However, Avishka Gunawardene tried to pull Khan to mid-wicket but only succeeded in offering a simple catch to backward point, Thilan Samaraweera heaved what might charitably be described as a drive to slip and Russel Arnold sacrificed his wicket. A push to backward point, a hesitation and a throw from Yuvraj Singh to the bowler’s end left him stranded out of the frame.Chaminda Vaas slashed and thrashed to some effect, hitting four boundaries from 20 balls in his innings of 26 before one more slog to deep extra cover brought about his downfall. Upul Chandana tamely chipped Ajit Agarkar to mid-off in his first back and Pramodya Wickramasinghe was run out by Yuvraj again to bring the innings to a premature and most unsatisfactory close. For the second time in consecutive matches, India found themselves a wicket down from the first ball of the innings. At Chester-le-Street it was Sourav Ganguly; this time Virender Sehwag was beaten neck and crop by the first ball from Vaas to be bowled. Things could have got worse for India because Ganguly was adjudged not to have got a touch to the last ball of that over as it brushed something on its way through to the wicket-keeper, and the same batsman was dropped by Chandana at backward point in the following over bowled by Dilhara Fernando.Having dropped that sharp but eminently catchable chance, Chandana was forced to watch as Ganguly and Mongia went about the task of stabilising the innings. They could do so without undue concern about the run rate because of the low target. However, the batsmen were also aware that the ball was still seaming about.Lateral movement had little to do with the dismissal of Mongia when the score had reached 30 in the 13th over. He shaped to turn Vaas to leg, but got a leading edge that sent the ball ballooning to Jayasuriya’s right at mid-off where he held a good catch low down. Vaas ended the over with a loud appeal against Tendulkar as the ball narrowly missed the edge of the bat but brushed the thigh on its way through to Kaluwitharana. It was a cracking delivery, but a little high for an lbw decision.Ganguly’s luck finally ran out in the next over, with Kaluwitharana involved again. Ganguly edged Wickramasinghe to slip where Jayawardene only parried the ball, but straight to the wicket-keeper who completed the catch. Suddenly the Sri Lankan total took on a greater magnitude and, not for the first time in his career, much rested on the shoulders of Tendulkar. So often in the past he has carried the team through whatever crisis it faced, but this time it was not to be. He chipped an easy catch to Fernando at backward point off Chandana only to see the fielder make an awful mess of it. Both Sri Lankans would have been all too aware of each other’s feelings. However, Fernando was brought into the attack next over and his first ball brought about the end of Tendulkar as he pushed a catch into the covers. As ever when a batsman of Tendulkar’s stature goes cheaply, nerves were now jangling. They were not eased when Rahul Dravid tried to turn Fernando to leg, and sent a leading edge into the covers into the hands of Arnold. Sri Lankan celebrations were truncated when it was noticed that the umpire had signalled a no ball for over-stepping.By such slender margins are matches won and lost. Dravid went on in company with Yuvraj Singh to fashion a recovery that led India towards victory. Both usually free-scoring batsmen took their time as the situation demanded. Having halted the fall of wickets, Yuvraj did greet Jayasuriya into the attack by hoisting him for six over long-on and expanding his repertoire. Not all the runs came off the middle of the bat, but they all counted towards the total that was getting ever closer to the target.Sri Lanka needed wickets and brought Vaas back. He continued to pose a threat to the batsmen but failed to make the breakthrough and the other bowlers lacked the penetration or accuracy to maintain the pressure that might lead to a mistake. When that mistake eventually came, it was too late to affect the outcome of the match. Yuvraj sliced a Fernando full-toss to Chandana at backward point after the fifth wicket partnership had realised 91 runs in 20 overs.Dravid went on to his fifty from 82 balls with a six and four fours and appeared destined to be there at the end when the victory he had worked so hard to earn was achieved. He would have been had a direct throw from Fernando not run him out when just nine runs were required, but he had done enough to earn the man of the match award and could watch as Chandana bowled a wide with the scores level to end the game. It was the 13th wide bowled by Sri Lanka along with five no balls and it does not take an acute cricketing brain to work out that such generosity to the opposition does not make it easy to defend a small total.

Wolves: Vitinha advised on future

Nuno Espirito Santo’s former assistant Rui Pedro Silva has advised Vitinha to prioritise gametime amid Wolves’ reported interest in bringing him back to Molineux.

Silva, who’s now pursuing his own managerial ambitions after he and Nuno left the Midlands outfit, was speaking to Portuguese newspaper Record (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown

Vitinha spent the 2020/21 season on loan at Wolves but found opportunities limited. Over the course of the season, he was restricted to just five Premier League starts, making a further 14 substitute appearances.

Wolves had the option to buy Vitinha for £18million until the end of June, but chose not to take it up.

According to The Athletic’s Tim Spiers, this was because they weren’t entirely ‘convinced’ by his performances and because they want to assess alternative targets in the same position.

But another Portuguese paper, Jornal de Noticias, reported last week that there was a ‘strong belief’ that Wolves would make a permanent move for Vitinha in July.

The latest

Silva reflected on the 21-year-old’s stint at Wolves last season and explained how he can move to the ‘next level’.

“Vitinha had enormous competition: Moutinho, Neves, Dendoncker,” he said. “But he has evolved and is ready for the next level, which is to be able to play more regularly.

“I think he should opt for a project that allows him to play more. It’s the game that guarantees you evolution.”

The verdict

If Wolves weren’t all that impressed with Vitinha, perhaps it was down to the fact that he was never able to generate any real rhythm as a predominant substitute.

He reminded Wolves of his ability at the Under-21 European Championships earlier in the summer as he played an instrumental role in Portugal’s run to the final.

Bruno Lage has historically shown a preference for a ‘4-4-2 double 6’ formation, deploying more defensive-minded players in the middle of the park. He may well tweak that system, but on paper it doesn’t particularly lend itself to the gametime Vitinha needs.

Given Lage’s typical set-up and Vitinha’s lack of action last term, it certainly appears that Silva is warning the youngster away from Molineux.

In other news, Wolves are expected to launch a bid for this forward.

Fabrizio Romano drops Nuno Mendes update

Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed the latest news on Manchester City’s interest in Sporting Lisbon left-back Nuno Mendes, and it seems as if Pep Guardiola is still desperate to add the teenager to his squad at the Etihad Stadium.

What’s the word?

City have regularly been linked with a move for the 19-year-old throughout the summer and Romano shared the latest on a potential transfer on his Twitter earlier this week, writing: “Manchester City are interested in signing Nuno Mendes. He’s considered a top left-back for the future – but the City board have no intention to pay the full €50m price tag to Sporting.

“Sporting are not accepting any proposal around €30m, as of today. Race still open.”

Would Mendes be a good signing?

Mendes has established himself as one of the brightest young talents in European football in recent seasons and played a huge part in Sporting’s impressive title win last season, despite only turning 19 earlier this month.

The Portuguese full-back made 29 appearances in Liga NOS, contributing one goal and one assist and averaging a superb 7.24 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

This was enough to rank him as the third-best performer in Rúben Amorim’s squad, which emphasises just how important he has become at Estádio José Alvalade, and it is no surprise that City are showing such a keen interest in him.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-manchester-city-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Manchester City transfer rumours and news!”]

Although Guardiola has the likes of Joao Cancelo, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Nathan Ake and Benjamin Mendy available to him at left-back for the 2021/22 campaign, you could argue that only Mendy is a natural in that position, which is hardly ideal given his injury issues.

Therefore, it would make a lot of sense to sign someone such as Mendes, for if he proves to be a success, he could easily nail down a starting spot at the Etihad for the next few years, which suggests that he would be well worth the investment.

[freshpress-quiz id=“577936″]

Although Romano’s update suggests that City aren’t willing to meet Sporting’s demands at the moment, this certainly seems like a transfer which could happen if negotiations progress. Considering Mendes’ obvious potential, City fans may be very excited about the prospect of the “outstanding” youngster (in the words of his former coach Diego Goncalves) joining Guardiola’s squad.

Dutch league match disrupted by violent confrontation

Dutch cricket was shocked this weekend by an outbreak of violence at the Premier League match between Jinnah and Hermes DVS

Cricinfo19-Aug-2002Dutch cricket was shocked this weekend by an outbreak of violence at the Premier League match between Jinnah and Hermes DVS. The match was abandoned after fighting broke out between members of the Jinnah team. Reports suggest that knifes were pulled and others were struck with lead pipes. One man, Jinnah secretary Shah Mohammed, was taken to hospital for treatment. The trouble within the club had surfaced last week when Shah Mohammed removed former Jinnah captain Kalil ur Rehman from the Jinnah board. Two warring factions developed within the club, and the Dutch Cricket Assocation were made aware of allegations of death threats being uttered. As a security precaution they decided to shift the venue of the weekend’s match to a “secret” location, and informed police of potential problems. On the morning of the match, the Shah Mohammed followers assembled to play their match against Hermes DVS at the Sparta ground. Meanwhile the other faction arrived at the original venue, Jinnah’s home ground at Abcoude. Learning of the switch of venue they travelled to Sparta to confront the other group. Efforts were made to avoid confrontation but to no avail. The opposition players and umpires were unharmed, but the match was abandoned. The match has been awarded to Hermes DVS, but the fate of the Jinnah club lies with the Dutch Cricket Assocation, who will meet this week. It is likely that Jinnah will lose their premier league status. Next weekend on August 23, the Pakistan Ambassadors Cup is scheduled to be played between Netherlands ‘A’ and a team of Pakistani players, including several from the Jinnah club. This match is now the subject of further concern, as the dispute within the club is far from settled.
