Gilchrist dreams of Twenty20 at the Olympics

Adam Gilchrist is leading a player push for Twenty20 to be included in the 2020 Olympics, believing it is an essential step in securing the game’s global future. With the start of the Beijing event less than a week away, Gilchrist says the cricket “pipedream” is a “potential reality” following the success of the new format and the Indian Premier League.”It doesn’t matter where the 2020 Olympic Games are held, but many of us who’ve experienced international Twenty20 cricket and the IPL are convinced that cricket should bid to become an Olympic sport in time for the Games,” Gilchrist wrote in the Deccan Chronicle. Cricket was part of the 1900 Olympics before being cut, but last year it gained “recognition status” from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for two years.”We have a responsibility to grow our game in new territories and amongst the women of the world,” Gilchrist wrote. “I believe the Olympic Games is the vehicle the sport should use to aggressively sell the message of our sport to all 202 competing Olympic nations, so our sport is strong and robust in countries where it is currently played, and exciting and ground-breaking in countries who haven’t yet caught the ‘cricket-bug’.”To receive “programme status” at the 2020 Olympics, cricket would need to be approved by the IOC at a meeting seven years before the event. Twenty-six sports are part of the Beijing schedule and there are currently two vacancies for future Games. Golf, karate, baseball, softball, rugby sevens and roller sports are among the disciplines currently competing for the right to be involved in 2016.Gilchrist believes it is time to start serious lobbying. “Between 2009 and 2013 cricket would promote itself to the IOC as a prospective sport and, if we get it right, cricket will be invited to the Olympic party in 2020,” he said. Each Full Member cricket board has been asked by the ICC to have two national men and women players complete Olympic questionnaires. The responses in Australia have been favourable and Gilchrist, a key performer in the IPL, has also sounded out excited colleagues from Australia, South Africa and England.Gilchrist experienced the surge of interest in Twenty20 during his time with the Deccan Chargers earlier this year and is convinced the IPL revolution has “changed cricket forever”. Now he wants the BCCI’s officials to work with the ICC to help take it to the Olympics.”They would be investing in the future of the sport because by having a men’s and women’s competition at the Olympic Games many more countries would be drawn to cricket,” he said. “It wouldn’t surprise me if countries like the USA, China, Italy, France and Japan become competitive very quickly in Twenty20, especially in women’s Twenty20. I believe that in time the success of cricket at the Olympic Games will lead to more Test-playing nations, something that the sport will need in the coming century.”Gilchrist feels the aim is realistic. “The Olympic movement knows it needs to increase its presence in the Asian subcontinent as India, Pakistan and Bangladesh contribute nearly 22% of the world’s population. In theory, this is a win-win for the Olympic movement and the ICC and its members.”India collected only a silver medal in Athens in 2004 while Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh failed to finish in the top three of any event. Cricket would dramatically increase each of the nations’ chances of reaching the podium while lifting interest in the subcontinent.Next year’s Twenty20 World Championship in England will be held over 16 days, one day shorter than the Olympic programme. Supporters of cricket’s push believe the length of the tournament – and its high-energy matches – is another valid reason for its inclusion.

Johnson must unleash Pritchard vs Burton

With the League One games already coming thick and fast, Sunderland manager Lee Johnson faces a number of tough calls ahead of the Black Cats’ clash with Burton Albion on Tuesday night in order to keep his squad as fresh as possible while also maintaining the Mackems’ 100% start to the season.

Indeed, in recent comments, the 40-year-old acknowledged the need for rotation in the Burton game, suggesting that 35-year-old Aiden McGeady could be due a rest.

As cited by Chronicle Live, Johnson said: “You just try and pick the best team to win the game, and it is obviously going to be a very different game [to the MK Dons fixture].

“I’ve got to assess the run of games we’ve had and have, and I’ve got to assess the sharpness of all the lads.

“I still think McGeady, for example, has a bit to do in terms of the catch up he’s been playing. We’ll find the balance.”

As such, with the veteran left-winger looking set to sit out the trip to the Pirelli Stadium on Tuesday, there would appear to be an obvious replacement who is quite literally waiting on the wings to start in place of the Republic of Ireland international – Alex Pritchard.

Game-changer

Having joined the club on a free transfer earlier this summer, Pritchard is yet to feature from the off in League One for the Black Cats, but the 28-year-old has nevertheless proven that he is more than worthy of a start against Burton.

Indeed, after being given a 29-minute cameo in the Black Cats’ 2-1 victory against MK Dons last weekend, the £2.25m-rated man touched the ball 17 times, as well as winning three tackles and three duels – metrics which saw the forward earn a SofaScore match rating of 7.10, the joint fourth-best of any Sunderland player in the fixture.

Prior to this performance, the former England under-21 international also highly impressed in his first Sunderland start in the Carabao Cup win over Port Vale, registering one assist, creating one big chance and making two key passes over his 65 minutes on the pitch, earning a SofaScore match rating of 7.00.

As such, it would very much appear as if the man who Mark Cooper once dubbed an “immense” player has already shown he is something of a game-changer for Sunderland, a trait which could well be hugely valuable for Johnson against an impressive Burton side who have also won both of their opening games of the League One season.

If the Mackems manager is indeed planning on resting McGeady for tonight’s fixture, it would appear most advisable for him to start Pritchard in the 35-year-old’s place.

South Africa’s tour match against Tasmania has been scrapped due to the switch in dates of the Champions League Twenty20 in India in December. The change was caused when the international tournament for domestic teams, which involves sides from Australia, South Africa, Pakistan, England and India, was rescheduled from its original spot after the now-postponed Champions Trophy. The first Test between Australia and South Africa in Perth was moved last month to accommodate the change and South Africa will have a two-day game against Western Australia before the three-Test series starts on December 17. They were due to face Tasmania in the lead-up to the Boxing Day Test, but there is no longer enough space for the fixture.Cricket Australia confirmed the alterations while unveiling their revamped domestic schedule for the summer. Western Australia and Victoria are Australia’s representatives in the Champions League and their fixtures in early December had to be shifted to create the Twenty20 window. The first round of Sheffield Shield matches will start on October 10 while the FR Cup now opens on October 8, with Western Australia playing New South Wales at the WACA. The reshuffle also means the Warriors will have four of their first five Sheffield Shield contests at home. “The WACA will be the centre of cricket in Australia throughout October and November,” the chief executive Graeme Wood said, “and given the Warriors’ outstanding record at home in recent seasons, it will be a great opportunity to burst out of the blocks and kick-start our season.”

Newcastle may sell 4 players for £30m+

Newcastle United are now reportedly willing to listen to offers for four of their first-team players before the summer transfer window ends.

The Lowdown: Spending not over

After the signing of Joe Willock on a permanent deal from Arsenal, the St. James’ Park faithful have been linked with a number of other players that they could potentially bring to the North East before the window shuts.

Among those names are the likes of Hamza Choudhury, Ethan Ampadu and Malang Sarr.

The Latest: Players up for sale

As per The Daily Mail, the Tyneside club are now willing to listen to offers for Sean Longstaff, Jeff Hendrick, Fabian Schar and Ciaran Clark as they look to raise some funds to bring some more players in.

All four players featured in a fair amount of games in the first team under Steve Bruce during the 2020/21 season, with Longstaff playing in 27, Clark 26, Hendrick 23 and Schar 19 (Transfermarkt).

The Verdict: Sell for the right price

If the Magpies can get the right price for all four players, then they should sell them all in order to raise some much-needed funds and bring in one or two more players of quality to help improve their starting eleven.

Longstaff is currently rated at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, Hendrick £8.1m, Schar £8.1m and Clark £2.7m, so their sales could raise over £30m altogether, which would be a handy number to have left in the transfer kitty.

While depth may be an issue, using those funds to purchase a quality centre-back and holding midfielder would be an excellent way to round off the window after the capture of Willock.

400 vezes Luis Fabiano!

O Vasco variava o esquema, atrapalhando as ofensivas do Bahia.

A teams begin second leg on even keel

All three teams are level on points, having won and lost a game each, though New Zealand boast the best net run-rate

A glance at the points table shows how evenly matched the three teams are ahead of the second leg of the tri-series, which begins at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, with hosts India A taking on New Zealand A on Sunday. All three teams are level on points, having won and lost a game each, though New Zealand boast the best net run-rate.The similarity between the teams isn’t limited to the points table. All three sides have experienced batting collapses largely due to the sporting track in Hyderabad which limited three scores to less than 200. It’s an issue each camp would have addressed, especially the Indians, who haven’t fired as a unit even though they have several internationally-experienced batsmen in their line-up.The pitch in Chennai, however, could change all that for it’s expected to be full of runs. It will ease the pressure on India’s openers, Robin Uthappa and Swapnil Asnodkar, who had partnerships of 5 and 1 in the first two games and are in need of a solid performance before the reserves in the squad get a look-in.Both batsmen are strong of the front foot but are vulnerable in conditions that suit the seamers. Against New Zealand, Asnodkar forgot where his off stump was and looked back to see it land half-a-dozen yards away. Uthappa was squared up by Shaun Tait in the first game and offered a sitter to mid-on after a flamboyant beginning against New Zealand A.The captain S Badrinath and Yusuf Pathan have held the middle-order together but the Indians won’t have Badrinath’s services for much longer because he’s been named as Sachin Tendulkar’s replacement in the squad for the Irani Trophy which begins on Wednesday.New Zealand’s middle order has its problems too. Their collapse, during which seven wickets feel for 70, was the reason for defeat against India A. They will be stretched further by the humid weather in Chennai, with temperatures around 37 degrees, which Peter Fulton, their captain, said would be a huge factor. A couple of their players are carrying niggles and New Zealand have put off naming their team until tomorrow.Australia are the most confident of the three sides, scorching the Indian bowling attack after a poor batting performance in their first game. The departure of Doug Bollinger and Peter Siddle to the Test team hasn’t depleted their fast-bowling resources either, with Ashley Noffke and Shaun Tait unsettling the Indians with swing and pace. The vice-captain, Adam Voges, hasn’t fired through the entire tour and a big score is due from him. Each side has two games left and a defeat in the first of those could jeopardise chances of making the final. A repeat of the first leg in Hyderabad could have all three teams level on two wins each, which will bring bonus points into the picture.
