Woodward struck gold over Schneiderlin sale

Manchester United’s transfer business over the last few years has helped take the club back towards the top end of the table, but it hasn’t always been that way.

Under the stewardship of David Moyes, Luis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho, the Red Devils brought in several high-profile, expensive flops.

The likes of Marouane Fellaini, Memphis Depay and Alexis Sanchez failed to have an impact at Old Trafford, contributing towards the club’s decline following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

Another huge disappointment was the acquisition of defensive midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin from Southampton after he arrived via a £31.5 million deal.

The Frenchman had impressed during a seven-year spell on the south coast where he helped the Saints climb from League One to the Premier League.

However, after earning his move to United in the summer of 2015, Schneiderlin’s career quickly took a turn for the worse.

He struggled to live up to the raised expectations placed upon him in the red half of Manchester and failed to produce his best form in his maiden campaign with the Red Devils, despite making 39 appearances in all competitions.

After Mourinho succeeded Van Gaal after Schneiderlin’s first 12 months at United, the 6 ft 1 beast made just eight appearances under the Portuguese tactician and only received 11 minutes of Premier League action before he was shown the exit door.

A move to Everton followed after the Toffees agreed to pay his £20m price tag, and although that saw United make a loss, that sale now looks like a very astute piece of business by departing chief executive Ed Woodward.

Schneiderlin never got back to his best at Goodison Park despite playing under Ronald Koeman again, the manager who has extracted his best form during their time together at Southampton.

He made 88 largely underwhelming outings for Everton before returning to his homeland with Nice last summer, a move that has seen his market value drop to just £6.3m even though he’s still in his peak years.

Therefore, Woodward’s decision to sell Schneiderlin when he did appears to have been a masterstroke, earning United millions of pounds in the transfer market for a player who was already in decline.

Samit Patel eager for IPL chance

Nottinghamshire have cleared Samit Patel, the England ODI allrounder, to play in the IPL this year

Samit Patel believes a stint in the IPL would be a benefit both to him and to England’s prospects in the ICC World Twenty20, after Nottinghamshire cleared the England ODI allrounder to play in this year’s tournament. The county said Patel would be available, subject to clearance from the ECB, to participate in the Twenty20 tournament till England’s home ODI series against West Indies.”I think it will happen,” Patel told Sky Sports News. “We’ve had talks and it’s all about opportunities. It’s going to be good not only for English cricket but worldwide. The more English players go and play in the IPL the more they will learn about the shorter format of the game and I think it’s a great opportunity to go and play against the best players in the world.”Nottinghamshire, in a release, said Patel’s participation would be subject to a contractual agreement between them, the ECB and relevant parties in India. “If bought in the auction, Patel would miss the start of Nottinghamshire’s domestic season and return to England in time for the ODI against West Indies on May 21,” the release said. The IPL’s second edition runs from April 10 to May 24.However, while the county claimed Delhi Daredevils, the IPL franchise, have expressed an interest in Patel, a Delhi official denied any approach had been made.According to IPL officials, Patel’s availability for the player auction on February 6 would become official only after a team informs the tournament authorities about their interest in the player. The IPL will then move to sign Patel on a basic contract before putting him up for the auction, an IPL official said. “None of this has happened yet,” he said.”We haven’t expressed any interest nor have we contacted Patel,” Amrit Mathur, chief operating officer (COO) of GMR Sports, which runs the Delhi team, told Cricinfo. “We already have Daniel Vettori, who is a world-class spinner and is available for the entire season.”Mick Newell, Nottinghamshire’s director of cricket, said he supports his player’s desire to participate in the tournament. “It’s an opportunity for Samit that we have to embrace because it gives him a chance to enhance and hone his one-day skills,” he said. “We’ve got plans in place to make sure that we have adequate cover in all areas of the squad and he’ll go to India with our blessing.”Patel, who made his England debut against Scotland in August 2008, has played 11 ODIs so far, scoring 116 runs at 23.20 and taking 11 wickets at 29. Patel, though, failed to impress during the recent ODI series in India, conceding 7.82 runs per over and averaging 60 for his three wickets. He fared a bit better with the bat, scoring 85 runs in four innings at a strike-rate over 90.He remains, however, a central figure in England’s build-up towards the ICC World Twenty20 in June, and the IPL could prove to be the perfect warm-up opportunity. “It’s such a big event with the T20 World Cup in England so it will be good for England to learn about Indian conditions and playing against other players,” he said. “Hopefully that will filter back to England and give us a lot more information for playing against Test-playing nations in the World Cup, but we just have to do what the ECB says.”

5,5
Renê
Substituiu Trauco e pouco participou.

Entrou no fim. Fica sem nota.

7,0

4,5

'Rebuilding will take a while' – Ponting

Ricky Ponting is resigned to a rebuilding period that could last years after Australia lost their first home Test series for 16 seasons. South Africa will overtake Australia to become the No.1 Test team if they complete a clean sweep in Sydney, having taken an unassailable 2-0 lead with their nine-wicket triumph at the MCG.”We’ve had an amazing run as a team,” Ponting said. “We have dominated world cricket for a long period of time. I’m still very positive and very sure that with some of these younger guys coming on that in a few years’ time we can get back up there and be dominating world cricketonce again.”It’s going to take a little while, there’s no doubt about that. You can’t expect young guys to come in and have sustained success. The younger guys are generally the ones that lack the consistency.”However, Ponting was full of praise for Peter Siddle who, in his third Test, picked up four wickets and bowled one fabulous spell on the second day, and Nathan Hauritz, who kept things tight and also collected four victims. The pair will be part of an inexperienced attack in Sydney, with Ben Hilfenhaus and Doug Bollinger jostling for debuts along with the uncapped allrounder Andrew McDonald.Ponting has repeatedly asked his senior men to stand up and he led the way in Melbourne with 101 and 99, but the other old heads including Matthew Hayden and Michael Hussey struggled again, as did Andrew Symonds and Brett Lee, who will miss the SCG match through injury.Their below-par efforts contributed to a series loss that Ponting said was frustrating but no worse than previous failures.”It’s disappointing when you lose any series,” he said. “This one I think is probably no different. The only fact that’s different is that we’ve probably been in very strong winning positions in both of the Test matches and when we’ve needed to put the last couple of nails in the coffin we haven’t been able to do that.”In fact we’ve been a long way from being able to do that. What’s happened in this series is generally what Australia have done to teams in the past, where a big moment has come up and we’ve grabbed it with both hands, turned a negative into very much a positive and then beenable to go on and win games.”Australia have now been defeated in two of their past three Test series, failing against India and South Africa. They are the second and third-ranked teams and Ponting said Australia needed to improve their consistency to avoid slipping behind.”The gap between our best cricket and our worst cricket has been too big,” he said. “We have to make that smaller if we want to win the next Test and if we want to stay in the top group of Test-playing nations.”

Hasenhuttl must start Che Adams vs Man City

Southampton head to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday in search of their first win in the Premier League this season at the fifth attempt.

The Saints have picked up three points from their opening four league matches, drawing with Newcastle, West Ham and Manchester United after a 3-1 defeat to Everton on the opening day of the campaign.

Ralph Hasenhuttl now faces the unenviable task of trying to pick up a result away to Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side have won their last four games in all competitions, scoring 17 goals in the process.

Southampton’s last match ended in a 0-0 draw against the Hammers and Hasenhuttl made a bold call ahead of kick-off, dropping Che Adams from the starting line-up. The Scotland international ended up being an unused substitute as the Saints failed to score, with Armando Broja replacing Adam Armstrong up front in the second half.

It is now time for the Austrian to unleash Adams and bring him back into the starting XI against Manchester City this weekend. Whether that means partnering him with Armstrong in a front two or going with the Scot as the sole number nine remains to be seen, but he should be in the side come 2pm on Saturday as he has the quality to be a game-changer for the Saints.

Earlier this year, Adams was the recipient of a contender for manager quote of the season from Hasenhuttl, who called him a ‘ketchup bottle phenomenon’ for his feast-or-famine goalscoring pattern.

The Austrian said: “Maybe again we have the ketchup bottle phenomenon. A long time nothing, but then maybe everything comes at once. So let’s see.”

The £52k-per-week beast produced nine goals and five assists for Southampton in the Premier League last season, showing that he has the ability to score and create goals at this level. He has also plundered decisive goals against City in the past, scoring a sensational 40-yard screamer against Guardiola’s side in a 1-0 win at St Mary’s in 2020.

This is why he should be reintroduced into the starting XI for the match on Saturday. Adams has proven that he can score goals in the Premier League, and indeed against City, which means that he has the potential to be a game-changer for Hasenhuttl’s side. It’s time to squeeze the ketchup bottle to see what comes out…

Aston Villa: Declan Firth on trial

Aston Villa have taken versatile Chelsea teenager Declan Firth on trial, according to Birmingham Live.

The Lowdown: Livramento interest

This isn’t the first time Villa have been interested in a Stamford Bridge teenager.

Villa were eyeing a move for Tino Livramento in the summer, however, the full-back ended up signing for Southampton and has been a regular in the Premier League under Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Johan Lange and co have now acted on another Blues youngster, with Firth only signing for at Stamford Bridge back in May.

The Latest: Firth trial

Birmingham Live shared a story on Friday evening, claiming Firth is on trial at Villa.

The 19-year-old, who can play as a left-back, left-midfielder or a right-midfielder, started for the Under-23’s in a victory over West Brom.

Ashley Preece labelled Firth’s display as ‘menacing’, with Caleb Chukwuemeka grabbing the headlines with a hat-trick in a 4-2 win.

The Verdict: Smart move?

After missing out on Livramento, it seems as if Villa have taken swift action when it comes to their interest in Firth.

Bringing him to Bodymoor Heath for a trial seems to be a smart option, and should he impress in Mark Delaney’s side, he could be the latest teenager to pen terms at the club’s academy.

We’ve seen at St Mary’s this season with Livramento the impact a youngster from Chelsea can make when given an opportunity, and who knows, Villa could be onto the next impressive talent coming out of Stamford Bridge.

In other news: Source says Lange wants 40-goal ace on £25k-p/w for Villa; he’s scoring a goal per game.

Prior backs role of on-field umpires

Matt Prior has offered his support to the on-field umpires during the current trial of review technology as the players continue to come to grips with the new system

Matt Prior, the England wicketkeeper, has offered his support to theon-field umpires during the current trial of review technology asthe players continue to come to grips with the new system. Tony Hilland Rudi Koertzen were at the centre of the action on the second daybetween England and West Indies at Sabina Park, with both sidesgaining and losing from the third umpire. This is the third series to be part of the trial, following theprevious contests between India and Sri Lanka then New Zealand andWest Indies. Devon Smith was given out lbw to Andrew Flintoff afterHill, the on-field official, had originally declined the appeal, whileRamnaresh Sarwan was reprieved after Hill had initially given apositive decision in Steve Harmison’s favour.”I think a lot of the players have some sympathy with the guys[umpires] because they are making tricky decisions,” Prior said.”We’ve just had an afternoon of having to try and make decisions in asplit second and it’s not easy. Everyone makes mistakes, players willmake more mistakes than umpires in a day’s play. If an umpire makes amistake it’s not because they are trying to. If the decision ischanged then so be it.”Five decisions were reviewed during the second day’s play and all inthe space of 12 overs. The most controversial of those was Sarwan’soverturned lbw when on 5, with replays showing the ball would haveclipped the top of the stumps.”Harmison’s one with the use of Hawk-Eye looks like it is hitting thetop of the bails which is out,” Prior said. “So from that point ofview you can get a bit frustrated. But it’s not easy. The third umpireis making a guess decision as much as anyone else. If you are trustingHawk-Eye to track the ball three-quarters of the way or longer, thenwhy not all the way. “As a wicketkeeper, Prior will often be in the thick of the action whenreviews are asked for, although he said that he can only be of somuch use to Andrew Strauss when the ball is swinging “A lot of peoplewould say that the keeper has the best view but that’s not always thecase,” he said. “We had a couple where the ball was tailing into legstump and you lose the line.”From my own point of view it’s very much an instinctive call. You seeit and you either feel it’s out or you don’t. But when a decision likethe Steve Harmison one is given not out you almost startsecond-guessing yourself a little because I thought that was prettyclose.”Sarwan admitted he was grateful for his escape but said that WestIndies remained unsure about the system following their firstexperience of it on the recent tour of New Zealand. “In our team nottoo many guys are keen on it. It kind of takes the umpires out of thegame. Sometimes it goes your way, sometimes not, we have to realisethat everyone is human and makes mistakes and that is something thatyou need to understand.”One of the issues that came to the fore was the time it takes to makethe decisions, which was an original concern about the furtherintroduction of technology. The system has already been tweaked by theICC to reduce the number of reviews down to two per team, perinnings, and the stoppages in play will need further monitoring.”Do you sacrifice that to make sure you get the right decision?,”Prior said. “There is a huge amount at stake at the minute and bigdecisions have to be made. Traditionalists will say it does take quitea bit of time out of the game, and why shouldn’t the umpires have theright to make their decision as they always have done?”
