Lehmann counting on Gilchrist and Laxman

Deccan Chargers are banking on the experience of Adam Gilchrist and the knowledge of VVS Laxman, who was replaced as captain by Gilchrist after the first IPL, to finish “a lot higher” than their bottom spot in 2008. Darren Lehmann, the team’s new coach, also said the side was let down by their bowling and fielding last year and that the second IPL starting on Saturday would be a personal challenge.”Adam Gilchrist is the captain and he is very experienced,” Lehmann told Cricinfo. “But VVS Laxman is an important player for us, too. He has got a wealth of experience, and with that knowledge, we are hoping to make some inroads there.”Deccan started last season as favourites after topping their player purchase cap of US$5 million by signing up explosive batsmen like Gilchrist, Andrew Symonds, Herschelle Gibbs, Shahid Afridi and Rohit Sharma, but disintegrated as the IPL progressed. This time, they have begun on a positive note by winning a warm-up game at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on Monday against Titans by six wickets. Scott Styris, their New Zealand signing, took three for 10 to help dismiss Titans for 99 and scored an unbeaten 36 to wrap up a six-wicket win in 11 overs.Deccan will open their IPL campaign in Cape Town on Sunday against Kolkata Knight Riders and Lehmann said he wouldn’t go “too in-depth” into the team’s gameplan. “What I can say is that this time, we are going to play with real passion, play smart, and obviously play better than last year,” Lehmann said. “All in all, I thought we batted well last year but our fielding and bowling probably let us down, so that’s one area we are certainly going to pick up on.”In fact, nothing went right for Deccan last time even outside the field, starting with Laxman’s wrist injury which ruled him out of most of that IPL. A few months later, the team controversially replaced Laxman with Gilchrist as part of a management overhaul that also had Lehmann taking the palce of Robin Singh as coach.Laxman, who will leave for South Africa on Wednesday night, has since staged a magnificent comeback, scoring 956 runs in 12 Tests at an average of 56.23 with two centuries — one each against Australia and New Zealand — and six half-centuries.Then again, just before the second player auction this February, the team also lost Tim Wright, its chief executive officer, over an apparent difference of opinion over the former IMG official’s role in the franchise’s management structure.”There have been a lot of things said but at the end of the day, we just got to perform on the field and that’s all we will be trying to do,” Lehmann said. “Things just didn’t go the team’s way; they didn’t play very well, and the simple fact is we’ve got to improve that this year. We know that as a team, and we will be doing our utmost to do that this year. In Twenty20, everything needs to come together at the same time. We need to field very well, bowl really smartly and also make an effort. These are things we are trying to improve. It’s a good challenge.”Lehmann said the short preparation time available for this IPL would not be a problem because most of his players have been playing international cricket through the year – Gibbs will join the team after the one-day series between South Africa and Australia ends on April 17.”That’s not a worry,” he said. “We just need to get together and get our plans in place on where to go. Besides, most teams don’t have a long preparation period anyway this year because of the move to South Africa so everyone is on the same boat. So the idea is to move as quick as you can, and as best as you can.”Deccan, however, will be have the services of Symonds only for the last two weeks of this IPL after the Australia allrounder was named in the national one-day squad for the series against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi from April 22-May 7. But Lehmann hopes that the team’s new signings – Dwayne Smith and Fidel Edwards – will contribute to some early wins. Edwards took two wickets in Monday’s warm-up game.”Edwards has got explosive pace that’s one thing you need for a Twenty20 start,” Lehmann said. “We expect him to play really well for us and get involved in some early wins with some early wickets. Dwayne Smith is an explosive batsman and a handy allrounder. We have got some depth there, which is really good, and we are looking forward to some inputs from their side as well.”Lehmann also said that his team would be able to adapt to South African conditions better because he, Gilchrist and Laxman have played there before and that experience would work to the team’s advantage. Asked where he hoped his team would finish this time, Lehmann said: “Hopefully, a lot higher than last year.”

Marquinhos Gabriel sente a coxa e deve virar desfalque no Corinthians

Jair lamenta 'apagão': 'Enquanto tivemos energia, fomos bem'

Falhas individuais? Desatenção? Mérito do adversário? Jair preferiu desconversar.

Pay rise likely for West Indies domestic players

First-class players in the West Indies are set for a hike in salaries after the WICB submitted a proposal to the WIPA to reduce the disparity in earnings between international and domestic players

Cricinfo staff28-Mar-2009First-class players in the West Indies are set for a hike in salaries after the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) submitted a proposal to the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) to reduce the disparity in earnings between international and domestic players. The proposal includes the allocation of 22% of the board’s annual revenue to players’ salaries and the provision of retainer contracts for all first-class players with an increase in their match fee from US$300 to $1,000.The proposal also includes a new category called “rookie contracts”. The first-class players will now be able to benefit from membership of the Players’ Provident Fund, with contributions from the board. The latest development comes after a recent stand-off between the board and the regional cricketers reportedly due to issues regarding retainer contracts and first-class fees. As a mark of solidarity, players involved in three games of the regional first-class competition boycotted the opening day of the 11th round. The WICB, in an official release, said it “recognised the disparity in players’ salaries, but pointed out that the proposal currently before the WIPA represents a broader WICB commitment to players’ emoluments, which is itself a component of the board’s new thrust to ensure an enhanced relationship with WIPA.”The latest proposal also comes in the midst of yet another pay dispute between the West Indian senior players and the board, one which has threatened to derail the team’s forthcoming tour of England.

Sheffield Wednesday dealt injury blow

Sheffield Wednesday have racked up a mixed bag of results in their League One campaign with five wins, three draws and three defeats from 11 games played, putting them in ninth place in the league table.

Despite seeing his side secure a 1-0 victory away at Bolton Wanderers in their latest League One match thanks to a goal from Lee Gregory, Owls manager Darren Moore was unfortunately handed a double injury blow in the clash.

What’s the news?

During the match against Bolton, Wednesday duo Lewis Gibson and Sam Hutchinson had to be replaced at halftime due to injury after starting the match at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Speaking after Saturday’s match, Moore said that the injuries were muscle-related and that both players will be assessed today (Monday) to find out the extent and seriousness of the issues.

Further setbacks

With Gibson having struggled with his fitness since arriving at the Yorkshire club back in August on a loan deal from Everton’s U23 side, it’s a real shame to see him pick up this latest injury.

Additionally, Hutchinson has also had some fitness issues this season.

Taking this into account, we feel the setbacks of both of these players is starting to become an issue for the team now, which Moore will have to deal with moving forward.

Looking ahead to Wednesday’s next League One match against AFC Wimbledon at the weekend, Moore will have to make some changes to the starting XI that faced Bolton if Hutchinson and Gibson end up being unavailable to play in the game due to their new concerns.

With Wednesday duo Cheyenne Dunkley and Dennis Adeniran replacing Hutchinson and Gibson for the second half of the match against Bolton, it seems likely that Moore will have to pick those two from the start against Wimbledon depending on the extent of Gibson and Hutchinson’s latest injury problems.

However, with Wednesday chasing a promotion place back to the Championship, Moore will undoubtedly need all of his squad players available to him for selection to give the club the best chance of achieving that. That’s precisely why he’ll be gutted over recent developments.

Gayle ponders Test future

Chris Gayle has said that he wasn’t looking to remain the West Indies captain for a long period of time and would be “giving it up shortly” because of the pressure the job entailed

Chris Gayle has said that he doesn’t want to captain West Indies for much longer because of the pressure the job entailed, and has hinted he may give up playing Test cricket to concentrate on a career in the Twenty20 format. In a candid interview with The Guardian, Gayle also said that he “wouldn’t be so sad” if Test cricket eventually gave way to the Twenty20 version and hit back at Andrew Strauss, who had criticised the West Indies captain for arriving from the IPL just two days before the start of the Lord’s Test, asking the England captain to “stay out of [other] people’s business”.”To be honest with you there’s a possibility I might give it [captaincy] up – I will be giving it up shortly,” Gayle told the Guardian. “It’s definitely not something I’m looking to hang on to. I need some time for myself, to be honest with you, it’s a lot of travelling. There’s always something you have to go and do, you know, extra. Lunch or dinner, some other thing, there’s always something for the captain. I’m not that type of person. I can’t take on too much. So soon I will be handing over this captaincy. I [will] soon finish with it.”Gayle, who took over the captaincy from Ramnaresh Sarwan in 2007, said he was looking for potential successors. “We’re still looking at quite a few,” he said. “So we just have to wait and see when the selectors decide – or whosoever decides. Then I’m ready. The chairman pointed out to me they want me to actually be the captain for right now. We have to see how it goes. I said, ‘Don’t be too long, though’.”Speaking on the eve of the Chester-le-Street Test, Gayle claimed he had been misquoted in the interview, but reiterated his personal stance on the longer form of the game. “Test cricket is always going to be there, but they were my views on Test cricket as an individual,” he told reporters at the Riverside. “I don’t see myself playing Tests for any long period of time. I think Test cricket will always be there.”Twenty20 has come onboard and it’s made a huge impact on the world, it’s brilliant, games have been sold out and it has taken the place by storm. I look at Test cricket differently, I don’t see it as long term for me, just for me, I’m just speaking about myself.”Gayle took over the captaincy in the absence of Sarwan who was injured for the ODI series against England in 2007. The West Indies board initially rejected the selectors’ move to appoint Gayle before reversing its decision. Gayle revealed that he was reluctant to take over the captaincy and had to be persuaded into the role. “At the time when I was asked I didn’t want to be the captain,” he said. “That’s when it all started. We won the series and then I said to them, whenever Sarwan is fully fit, I am ready to step down. Maybe they saw something different, something totally different, and they asked me to be captain.”I thought hard about it. I didn’t want to be captain. I wanted to have more free time. I didn’t want that added pressure at that particular time, but they actually insist, insist, insist, so I said OK. So I thought, just get on with it.”Gayle was then preferred as captain over Sarwan for the 2007-08 tour of South Africa. He resigned at a West Indies directors’ meeting last July following the home series against Australia due to disagreements over selection but was persuaded to stay on by WICB president Julian Hunte.Gayle was the subject of much criticism for extending his IPL stint with the Kolkata Knight Riders and joining his West Indies team-mates only 48 hours before the first Test at Lord’s, a match which they lost inside three days. Strauss had said that “we wouldn’t want our players to arrive two days before” a Test. He added that it was important for Test cricket to get the attention it deserved and that it shouldn’t be devalued in “any way, shape or form”.Gayle, however, responded to Strauss’s comments by saying that the matter “doesn’t concern him”. “Focus on his team, don’t worry about West Indies, don’t worry about me. Tell him don’t sleep with Chris on his mind, tell him get Chris off his mind,” Gayle said. While Gayle said he wouldn’t be worried if the primacy of Test cricket were to be reduced, he said Strauss ought to be because the England captain may not be able to adapt to the shorter format. Strauss, who is England’s Test and ODI captain, isn’t part of the squad for the World Twenty20 in June.”I wouldn’t be so sad [about the demise of Test cricket],” Gayle said. “Some other players would be. Maybe Andrew Strauss would be sad. Maybe he will be sad if Test cricket dies and Twenty20 comes in. Because there is no way he can make the change. So tough luck. I like Twenty20. Who doesn’t? Maybe a couple of the Englishmen wouldn’t like to play Twenty20.”Responding to Gayle’s criticism of his comments, Strauss said: “It’s more his issue than anything to do with the England team to be honest. I certainly feel that Test cricket is the primary format of the game.”I think the majority of the cricketers around the world feel that and certainly all the cricketers in the England team feel that as well. My view prior to the last Test match was, if that is the case, it needs to get the attention it deserves in terms of preparation and my views haven’t changed on that..”What does concern me is the future of the game of cricket and I believe very strongly Test cricket should continue to be the number one format of the game. It’s the only game that really tests out your temperament, your technique, your hunger, your bravery, all those aspects of the game.”

Newcastle manager news on Garcia

A new name has been put forward in the Newcastle United manager hunt in the form of Rudi Garcia.

The Lowdown: So many names…

As per The Daily Mail, there have been countless names mentioned as potential successors to Steve Bruce after he left his role at St. James’ Park on Wednesday morning.

Unai Emery, Roberto Martinez, Steven Gerrard and Paulo Fonseca have all been linked with the job, according to the publication.

The Latest: Garcia emerges

The Daily Mail has now revealed that Garcia is the newest name to have been put forward for the vacant post, having been out of work since leaving Lyon this summer.

Journalist and transfer insider Pedro Almeida has recently fuelled speculation that a Frenchman is set to be the next manager in the North East, and of course, Garcia would fit that bill.

The Verdict: Wait for someone better

With the kind of names that have been linked with the job on Tyneside in recent days, the Magpies are better off waiting for someone better to become available than Garcia.

He has an impressive overall win rate as a manager at 48.5%, but has only won a mere two major trophies in his managerial career, both of whom came over a decade ago with Lille (Transfermarkt).

The fact that the biggest transfer fee that he has played for a player is £26.37m for Dimitri Payet also suggests that he may be overwhelmed by the abundance of riches that the new owners will likely give their manager to spend, and so Garcia should not be a priority for them as of now.
