Newcastle could turn to Roberto Martinez

Taking to Twitter, The Daily Mail reporter Craig Hope has made a Newcastle United managerial claim involving former Premier League boss Roberto Martinez.

The Lowdown: Martinez eyeing role…

Amid the continued reports revolving around Paulo Fonseca, who appears the favourite for the job as it stands, some other sources have suggested that he is far from definite despite PIF chief Amanda Staveley personally preferring him (The Telegraph).

One of those is Hope, who reported that the 48-year-old isn’t a foregone conclusion and there are still many contenders for the Magpies hot seat after Steve Bruce’s sacking.

The Daily Mail journalist has also reported before that Martinez is ‘interested’ in taking the job at Newcastle as he shares another update on the Belgium boss.

The Latest: Hope makes Martinez claim…

Taking to social media, Hope has reiterated that Fonseca isn’t a guarantee for the St James’ Park role, despite odds suggesting that it is a foregone conclusion.

Indeed, according to his information, a few serious contenders could emerge ‘in the coming week’, with one of them being Martinez, who has won silverware in England.

As well as the 48-year-old former Everton boss, both Lucien Favre or Unai Emery could also be serious candidates.

The Verdict: Underrated option?

Having overseen Belgium on the biggest stages in international football whilst working with truly elite players, Martinez could come as a very underrated option for the Newcastle job.

His open, attack-minded style of football could be a joy to watch if given the right backing by PIF – certainly in stark contrast to the Bruce era.

Lauded as a ‘world class’ manager by fellow ex-Premier League coach Alex McLeish, his possible appointment certainly shouldn’t be dismissed out of hand by the Toon Army.

A powerful batting display from Hampshire, led by Michael Lumb’s 100, propelled them into the Friends Provident Trophy semi-finals as they proved too good for a Middlesex team missing key players. Lumb and Jimmy Adams added an opening stand of 154, while there was a strong finish from Liam Dawson as Hampshire reached an imposing 310. The visitors’ inexperience batting line-up couldn’t keep up the chase. It was a commendable effort by Middlesex to hunt down a huge target without the services of Phil Hughes (back in Australia), Owais Shah and Eoin Morgan (both on England duty) after each of that trio had played key innings at various times in the qualifying stage. Without them, Middlesex had to draft in Billy Godleman, who had previously lost his one-day place, and 19-year-old Sam Robson.Godleman fell early in the chase, but Robson combined with Neil Dexter to give Middlesex a chance. They added 89 for the third wicket and kept the asking rate within reasonable bounds. However, Robson fell when he tried to cut Dawson and the middle order lost momentum. The normally free-flowing Dawid Malan laboured for 19 off 39 balls and three quick wickets then put paid to any slim hopes of success.Malan was removed by Billy Taylor and shortly after Dexter picked out midwicket against Imran Tahir for 78. Taylor showed all his experience when he bowled Shaun Udal and Hampshire were home and dryUdal, the Middlesex captain, made a surprise move by opening the bowling on a dry surface after Hampshire batted first. However, that experiment lasted just one over before the quicks took over and the Hampshire openers began to make hay. The run rate was soon above a run-a-ball and the visitors missed the experience of Tim Murtagh.Steven Finn made the breakthrough when he bowled Adams but Hampshire eased past 200 as Lumb reached his century off 97 balls. However, when he was stumped next ball off Malan the pace slowed a little as Udal picked up two quick wickets. But there was a final flourish from the home side as Michael Carberry and Dawson added 90 for the fifth wicket. Dawson again caught the eye with 51 off 37 balls and it was an innings that proved vital.

West Ham get triple injury boost vs Villa

West Ham United have received an encouraging injury update ahead of their return to Premier League action today…

What’s the latest?

David Moyes has been without the services of several players in recent weeks, notably first-choice right-back Vladimir Coufal, his backup Ryan Fredericks and summer loan signing Alex Kral.

However, it appears that all three are back in contention as the Irons head to the Midlands to face Aston Villa this afternoon.

Speaking in his pre-game press conference, via the club’s official website, the Scotsman commented on the situation.

“In the main, we’re getting better,” he said.

“Vladimir Coufal, who had been out previously, got some minutes [against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday].

“Ryan Fredericks is making progress after having a couple of injuries.

“Alex Kral has returned after isolating, so we’re pretty good at the moment, I’ve got to say. We’re in a good place.”

Major boost

The Hammers will be looking to make it five successive wins across all competitions when they head to Villa Park today, so to have these three players available is certainly a massive boost to their chances of success.

Following the international break, Moyes’ men defeated his former club, Everton 1-0, before sealing another three points against local rivals Spurs by the same scoreline. They also picked up another impressive win in Europe over Genk and knocked trophy holders City out of the Carabao Cup on penalties.

A win today could see West Ham move level on points with the Premier League champions, who currently occupy third place, having been defeated by Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The 58-year-old now has an interesting call to make at right-back as Ben Johnson has deputised ever so well, keeping a clean sheet in every appearance this season.

But at the end of the day, Coufal remains his star man and a crucial player in both defensive and attacking transitions – only Aaron Cresswell provided more assists in the league last term.

Kral, on the other hand, was signed with a view to a permanent move and will provide crucial backup to the industrious engine room of Tomas Soucek and Declan Rice – an injury to either could see his game time increase tenfold, so to have him back involved is certainly a positive.

Overall, this latest update should leave Moyes absolutely delighted heading into kickoff as he practically has a fully-fit squad available at his disposal, meaning their chances of picking up another win are bolstered even more.

AND in other news, David Moyes must unleash West Ham’s “complete monster” today, he could destroy Villa…

Lee should not be on Ashes tour – Lawson

The former fast bowler thinks Lee decision might “come back to bite” Australia

Long stretch: Brett Lee is fortunate to be in England, according to Geoff Lawson•Getty Images

Geoff Lawson, the former Australia fast bowler, can’t believe Brett Lee made the Ashes squad and thinks the decision might “come back to bite them”. Lawson, who has had a long-term involvement with New South Wales as a player and coach, would have preferred it if Doug Bollinger had been called to face England.”You’ve left out an outstanding left-arm fast bowler [in Bollinger] who’s in form, for a right-hand guy coming back from injury and you don’t know how he’s bowling,” Lawson told the Sunday Telegraph. “It doesn’t add up and it might come back to bite them.”Lawson said Lee would have been dropped if he hadn’t had ankle and foot surgery in the new year. “He hasn’t been in form for 18 months, going on two years, so it’s an interesting selection to put him in when he’s got no form and no match practice,” Lawson said.Lee has returned to the international line-up through Twenty20s and has four wickets for 117 runs at an economy rate of 9.75 in three games in the UAE and England. Last week he was taken for 27 in an over by Chris Gayle during a four-over spell of 1 for 56.”You can’t play Twenty20 cricket and expect that it’s a testing ground for Test cricket, it’s not going to happen,” Lawson said. “He’s underdone. He’s only been bowling four-over cricket, and not very successfully, since he’s come back from his injury. I think he’s physically fit, but you’ve got to be match fit. He’s not swinging the ball [and] international batsmen seem to be playing him a lot easier.”Damien Fleming expects Lee to battle with Stuart Clark and Ben Hilfenhaus for the third fast-bowling spot behind Mitchell Johnson and Peter Siddle. “Johnson’s spells last summer were as hostile as I’ve seen from an Australian bowler since I don’t know when,” Fleming said. “He was fast and furious. Siddle’s all over you with his competitiveness.”At his best, [Lee] probably gets a game but it’s all about form here. I don’t think his 300 wickets will have that much weight when it comes to selecting the team, it’ll be about current form.” The paper said Lee was one of six Australian players who have been guaranteed match payments throughout their 2009-10 contracts.

Sempre treinei. Graças a Deus hoje tive a oportunidade de jogar e consegui ajudar o time.
