ScorecardIndia Emerging Players, aided by Virat Kohli’s century and Sudeep Tyagi’s four wickets, clinched the Emerging Players Tournament by defeating South Africa at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane. In South Africa’s only loss of the tournament they went down to India in the final by 17 runs, losing their last five wickets for 30 runs.Vaughan van Jaarsveld, the South African captain, chose to give his bowlers first use of the surface and Lonwabe Tsotsobe dealt the early advantage. Tsotsobe, the tall left-arm fast bowler, trapped Ajinkya Rahane lbw in the first over, the ball after the opener smacked him for six over extra cover. Next ball he had M Vijay lbw for a duck with a fuller ball and India were 2 for 7.S Badrinath (20) and Kohli started a recovery but India were further rattled and found themselves half down for 109 in the 22nd over. Then Wriddhiman Saha, the wicketkeeper, added 78 with Kohli who raised his half-century from 59 balls. Kohli was particularly strong on the leg side, collecting sixes in consecutive overs with superb feet movement. Kohli brought up his century from 97 balls, a sterling effort under pressure, before he fell for 104 when driving straight to extra cover. Saha made a fine 74 and with Amit Mishra contributing 25 from 22 balls India finished on 9 for 283. Tsotsobe finished with 5 for 69.South Africa’s openers put on 52 with Rilee Rossouw particularly dismissive of India’s new-ball pair. He slammed 35 from just 16 balls, including consecutive sixes off Tyagi, before the bowler had his number. Tyagi struck in successive overs and thereafter India’s bowlers chipped away. The blow that effectively turned the match their way was Tyagi’s dismissal of Henry Davids for 82 in the 40th over, the opener steering a widish delivery to backward point. Thandi Tshabalala nicked Tyagi next ball and South Africa slumped to defeat with Misha capping a good day with two economical wickets.
ScorecardNew Zealand Emerging Players’ poor run in Australia continued with a crushing defeat at the hands of the Australian Institute of Sports in Brisbane. The third-place play-off was a 40-overs per side affair and Australia hardly broke a sweat as they chased down 245 with eight wickets and 42 deliveries remaining. This was a win set up in the field. Peter George hurt New Zealand at the top and put pressure on Watling, who responded with a mature innings that spanned the full 40 overs. Anaru Kitchen’s 45 helped steady the situation with Watling but he became the first of offbreak bowler Jason Floros’ three wickets. There was little else in terms of support and Watling swung his bat at the end to remain unbeaten on 115 from 104 balls as New Zealand made 244.Led by the opener Rob Quiney’s unbeaten century, Australia cruised to victory. Quiney and Tom Cooper shared a 60-run opening stand after which Steven Smith added 79 with Quiney. Once he was dismissed for a brisk 44 Matthew Wade walked in and blasted 60 from 42 balls, including five sixes, and the match was a fairly one-sided affair. Quiney’s 115 needed 94 deliveries and featured six fours and a three sixes.

West Ham fans adore GSB transfer plan

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have been left ecstatic following reports of what GSB and the club are planning in January.

The upcoming mid-season transfer window could be the the club’s most crucial one in a very long time as David Moyes’ men continue to fight on all fronts.

Top of their Europa League group and third in the Premier League, West Ham are also set to play London rivals Tottenham in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

Depending on how they fare in the cups as they also aim to qualify for next season’s Champions League, Moyes could have it all to do, with a very congested festive schedule already awaiting him.

As such, West Ham may need to sign fresh faces in January to bolster the Scotsman’s chances of success, especially considering the lack of a natural backup option to Michail Antonio and Angelo Ogbonna’s cruciate ligament injury blow.

The Evening Standard shared an update on transfers after Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky officially bought a 27% stake in the club. They claimed that, while GSB aren’t planning a winter spending spree, Moyes will be sufficiently backed to bring in a centre-back, a striker and possibly 2020/21 loan star Jesse Lingard.

Flocking to this news from a reliable source, it’s little wonder that so many West Ham fans are ecstatic, as this development could plug most of their squad’s holes. As they voiced their opinions on Twitter, many heaped praise on GSB’s “brilliant” transfer plan for Moyes.

Check out some of their best verdicts below.

Gold drops exciting Antonio Conte claim

Antonio Conte is expected to tinker with Tottenham Hotspur’s formation in the coming weeks to get the best out of his new side, according to the ever-reliable Alasdair Gold…

What’s the word?

Speaking in a recent Q&A session with supporters, the football.london reporter dropped an intriguing and fresh claim on the Italian head coach heading into November’s international break.

“There’s an expectation within the club that the starting XI and formation will change over the coming weeks,” he revealed.

“I think the width from the wing-backs negates the need for wingers up front as well, so I think we’ll see a shift to a 3-4-1-2 and yes I reckon two or three faces in the team will be different within a month’s time.

“As for converted wing-backs, [Sergio] Reguilon and Emerson (as well as [Ryan] Sessegnon and [Matt] Doherty) have the ability to carry out the role so I’m not sure he needs to convert anyone particularly but who knows what the future holds for Lucas [Moura]/[Steven] Bergwijn if he did go down that route.”

Tactical tweak

This revelation should leave much of the Lilywhites faithful teeming with excitement heading into the other side of the break, not just because Conte would have spent more time with some of his players – at least those that have remained in north London.

But despite a change in the dugout, Spurs still remain one of the poorest sides in the final third in the Premier League this campaign and a switch to a 3-4-1-2 could be what is required to garner more positive results in attack.

As per The Athletic, Conte’s men have not registered a shot on target in nearly four hours of top-flight football – the last was Harry Kane’s header against West Ham three games ago. It’s a little more than five hours since their last goal, too.

Spurs now sit rock-bottom for average number of shots per game (10.1), even behind all of the teams in the relegation zone, whilst their expected goals total of 11.43 is the fifth-worst in the division.

Of course, there have been encouraging signs since the 52-year-old took charge but it is an issue that he needs to fix – and fast.

By introducing someone in the no.10 role, Conte can hand the likes of Kane and Heung-min Son some much-needed service in and around the penalty box and that is something they perhaps cannot get when utilising wing-backs and wingers in the same system.

Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Dele Alli would all be contenders for the position, so it’s not as if the Italian boss is short on options.

Overall, after having to witness some pretty drab attacking displays in recent weeks, this latest claim from Gold should have plenty around N17 absolutely buzzing.

It’ll take time but it could be a masterstroke from the former Chelsea and Inter Milan title-winner.

Thushara happy to play a full series

Sri Lanka’s promising left-arm fast bowler Thilan Thushara hopes to step into Chaminda Vaas’ shoes one day following a successful first day against Pakistan

Thilan Thushara: “This is the first time I have been able to play in an entire series and take wickets”•AFP

Sri Lanka’s promising left-arm fast bowler Thilan Thushara hopes to step into Chaminda Vaas’ shoes one day following a successful first day against Pakistan in Colombo. Thushara, who took 3 for 77, has nine wickets in the three-Test series at 27.33 so far and was happy to be playing a full series for the first time in his career.”This is only my sixth Test and although I played in the West Indies and in Pakistan I did not play regularly,” Thushara said. “This is the first time I have been able to play in an entire [three-Test] series and take wickets.”This series has shown a vast improvement in Thushara’s approach as a bowler and he put it down to hard work at the nets. “We do spot bowling concentrating on line and length under the watchful eyes of the coaches. Even at practice we have to put in 100% effort like bowling in a match. That could be the difference why our performance levels have improved.”Thushara and Nuwan Kulasekara have proved to be an excellent pair of new-ball bowlers for Sri Lanka, taking 23 wickets between them in the series. “Not only in this series, but I have bowled in partnership with Nuwan in several one-day internationals and we have been successful,” Thushara said.”The SSC wicket is a bit slow and with the second new ball you can swing it both ways. In the previous two Tests it was with the second new ball that we were able to make the breakthrough. The wicket is slower than we thought and the ball came nicely on the bat for the batsmen. Compared to the Galle and Oval wickets, this wicket is more batsman-friendly.Thushara said the Pakistan lower order was vulnerable against the new ball. “We hope to take the balance wickets early morning the ball is still new. I feel we had a good day today taking seven wickets and we don’t regret inviting Pakistan to bat first.”

Newcastle transfer news on Kieran Trippier

Paddy Kenny has given his reaction to some transfer news involving Newcastle United and Kieran Trippier.

The Lowdown: Trippier targeted

As per AS, the Atletico Madrid right-back is now a transfer target for the St James’ Park club following the completed takeover by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium.

Journalist and La Liga expert Guillem Balague revealed earlier this month that the Tyneside club have already ‘started negotiations’ with Tripper’s representatives over a potential move, as they are ‘really interested’ in signing him.

It is unclear whether the new owners will target the 31-year-old in the January transfer window or whether they will wait until the end of the season, depending on what their fate is in terms of potential relegation from the Premier League.

The Latest: Kenny reacts

Speaking to Football Insider, former Premier League goalkeeper Kenny has since given his reaction to the transfer news, claiming that it would be ‘big’ for Newcastle if they were to sign Trippier. The 43-year-old said:

“This is big for Newcastle if they can get away with it.

“He has been linked with a move back to England a couple of times now. He’s been away for a couple of seasons and he’s done really well in Spain.

“Obviously, he won the title and he seems to have impressed a lot of the fans over there. It’s no surprise really because he’s a top talent.

“I really like him, always have. His crossing is top-drawer, and his free kicks are amazing too. He’s a proper specialist when it comes to those two.”

The Verdict: No-brainer

There is little doubt that Trippier would elevate the quality of the squad that Eddie Howe currently has at his disposal at St James’ Park, given that he helped win the La Liga title with Atletico Madrid ahead of the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona last season.

As Kenny mentions, the defender also offers a threat from crosses and free kicks, which would be a very handy weapon to have in Howe’s armoury.

The Newcastle boss is fond of the England international from his time managing him at Burnley and claimed that the 31-year-old is ‘one of the best crossers of the ball’ that he has ever worked with (The Bournemouth Echo).

Trippier had a great relationship with Howe back then too, expressing his admiration for his former boss by claiming that he is a ‘great manager’ who helped him personally (The Burnley Express).

This relationship could work wonders on the pitch if the Magpies bring him in, so it seems a bit of a no-brainer to get a deal done.

Murali and Thushara hand Sri Lanka the advantage

Thilan Thushara and Muttiah Muralitharan were Sri Lanka’s bowling heroes, while Tim McIntosh, who faced 226 balls for his 69, led the resistance

After heavy morning rain had caused a 90-minute delay, Sri Lanka’s bowlerschipped away relentlessly, whittling out six wickets before bad light tookthe players off with New Zealand having just avoided the follow-on target.Thilan Thushara and Muttiah Muralitharan were Sri Lanka’s bowling heroes, while Tim McIntosh, who faced 226 balls for his 69, led the resistance for the visitors.Along the way, Murali passed Shane Warne for the most maidens bowled inTest cricket (1761), and New Zealand were left to rely on theirallrounders to take them past the follow-on target. When Jacob Oram was wrongly given out caught off the pad soon after tea,New Zealand were still in danger of being asked to bat again. But JesseRyder, who had got going with a couple of emphatic pulls off Thushara, andDaniel Vettori staved off the spin threat and when the new ball wasfinally taken after 97 overs, a cover-drive from Ryder ensured that therewould be no prospect of an innings defeat. He went soon after, bowled playing an airy drive at Nuwan Kulasekara, andthere was a stroke of fortune for New Zealand just before stumps whenDaniel Vettori was palpably plumb to a Murali doosra. Everyone but theumpire was convinced, and Vettori could have been excused a shy grin as hewalked off for the day.McIntosh and Ross Taylor had batted through most of the afternoon, longperiods of stolid defence interspersed with moments of real anxiety.McIntosh survived a couple of vociferous leg-before shouts from Murali, while Taylor was twice reprieved, on 15 and 27. Mahela Jayawardenecouldn’t get his hands to a low chance at slip off Ajantha Mendis, and hewas again the injured party as Nuwan Kulasekara spilled a slog-sweep.It was a stroke that Taylor had employed earlier, with one soaring overthe rope at square leg, but by and large, attacking strokes were few andfar between. McIntosh struck one superb straight six off Mendis, butneither batsman was remotely assured against Murali’s wiles, especiallywith the ball angling in from round the wicket. The two spinners bowled in tandem for most of the session, but it was onlywhen Mendis was taken off after a 14-over spell that Sri Lanka brokethrough. Taylor hung his bat out at one from Thushara, and PrasannaJayawardene did the rest. Soon after, McIntosh’s luck ran out. This time, the leg-before shout was marginal, on or just outside the line of offstump, but after a long think, Daryl Harper raised the finger. WhenMcCullum then chopped Thushara onto his stumps, New Zealand were indesperate trouble. They had managed fine in the abbreviated first session as McIntosh, troubled periodically by the short ball, gritted his way to ahalf-century. Patel provided stout resistance as the bowlers toiled hardwithout reward. Murali bowled the first over and was then taken off, andit was Thushara who asked all the initial questions. Patel was sound andconfident in defence, nudging the odd single, while McIntosh left the ballalone more often than not. Against the short ball though, he was in allsorts of strife, getting hit first on the shoulder and then flush on thehelmet.Patel’s innings was part grit and part good fortune. There was one lovelydrive through the covers off Thushara, but it was followed by an awkwardshot that flew past the slips as he sought to duck under a bouncer.McIntosh survived a huge shout from Mendis, with the umpire perhapsthinking there was an inside edge, and it looked like it was going to beNew Zealand’s morning as a rare full toss was pummelled away to takeMcIntosh to his half-century. But then Murali struck, trapping Patel infront after a 57-ball 26, and it was left to Taylor and McIntosh torebuild. But so slow and painstaking was the progress, with Murali puttingtogether 29 uninterrupted overs for just 54 runs, that it was only amatter of time before Sri Lankan pressure told.
