Grealish heaps praise on Wolves star Traore

Manchester City star Jack Grealish has waxed lyrical over Wolves winger Adama Traore, admitting that he is an ‘unbelievable’ player to watch.

The Lowdown: Traore hit-and-miss for Wolves

The Spaniard has had a curious Wanderers career in many ways, standing out with his blistering pace but not always performing consistently.

Traore has failed to register a single goal or assist in 11 Premier League appearances so far this season and has recently lost his place in the team.

However, £100m signing Grealish has huge regard for the 25-year-old, who has been afforded the luxury of playing both with and against him numerous times.

The Latest: Grealish hails Traore

Speaking on the Premier League’s YouTube channel on Thursday, the City maestro explained what it is that makes Traore such a unique player, saying:

“Adama Traore, he is the fastest person I have honestly ever seen. I remember his first game at Villa, he came on at right-wing and I’ve never seen anything like it. He ran down that right-wing and smashed it across the box and one of their defenders hit it into the goal and it was obviously an own goal, but it all came from him.

“Adama, the way he moves, like I said earlier, it’s unbelievable, I don’t know how he can run that fast.”

The Verdict: Non-stop entertainment value

Traore certainly can’t be accused of being a dull player to watch and he is thrilling when he is in full flow, being described as ‘undefendable’ by Jurgen Klopp and clocking Premier League-leading speeds.

The main issue for the Spain international is his end product, as highlighted by his aforementioned statistics this season, with the wide man scoring just 10 goals in 144 appearances for Wolves overall.

It is this reason which has seemingly led to Bruno Lage dropping him and he could even leave in January, which wouldn’t seem a great surprise given how little involvement the 25-year-old has had of late.

Kaneria's best spins out Leicestershire

A round-up from the latest action in the County Championship

Cricinfo staff28-Aug-2009Division Two3rd dayDanish Kaneria took a county-best 8 for 116 for Essex at Chelmsford, forcing Leicestershire to follow on, despite an unbeaten century from James Taylor. Leicestershire made 344 in reply to Essex’s 517 for 9 declared, as Kaneria’s dismantled the line-up. He was at it again in the evening, removing Matthew Boyce for 14 in Leicestershire’s second-innings, as they ended the day struggling on 42 for 2. Taylor, the impressive 19-year-old, recorded his third century of the season after hitting Ryan ten Doeschate for four boundaries in an over. The visitors might have avoided the follow-on had James Benning not been forced to retire hurt. He had scored 36 before he was struck by a delivery from David Masters which left him with a badly-swollen cheekbone, requiring a trip to hospital. It will need collusion or a final-day collapse at Wantage Road after Glamorgan battled to a narrow lead against Northamptonshire. The visitors were aided by an aggressive half-century from Jim Allenby as he hit 55 off 50 including ten boundaries and a contrasting 171-ball 55 from Mike Powell. Allenby took 28 off two overs with David Lucas and added 87 with Mark Wallace to put Glamorgan on top. However, Northamptonshire hit back with three wickets in 10 overs and Monty Panesar to a season’s best 3 for 55. Northamptonshire lost an early second-innings wicket in Rob White, who was trapped in front for nine off James Harris. The day’s play ended when bad light stopped play at 19 for 1, with the home side trailing by 14 runs.2nd dayThe Middlesex attack produce an incisive display to leave Gloucestershire in real trouble on 196 for 9 at Lord’s. The visitors made a poor start in reply to Middlesex’s 342 and were limping on 28 for 3 when Tim Murtagh removed Hamish Marshall and Alex Gidman with consecutive balls. Rob Woodman blocked his way to 9 from 84 balls in nearly two hours before falling to Steven Finn who also removed James Franklin. Chris Taylor was the only batsman to score relatively freely as he chalked up 65 with 52 of those coming in boundaries. But after seam did the early damage, it was Murali Kartik’s spin that caused the later problems as he claimed Stephen Adshead then ended Taylor’s resistance and then added Ian Saxelby. At that stage the follow-on loomed, but that was avoided by Jon Lewis and Steve Kirby. Middlesex had only managed to add 35 to their overnight total as Shaun Udal was left unbeaten on 45, but any disappointment at not making a larger total will have dissipated by the close.1st dayJonathan Batty and Michael Brown got Surrey off to a solid, if sluggish, start in their clash with division-leaders Kent at Canterbury, as the visitors ended on 261 for 4 at stumps. The pair put on 171 for the first wicket in four-and-half hours, before Brown edged to Geraint Jones off Amjad Khan for 88. Khan then promptly removed Stewart Walters third-ball without scoring with a catch at gully. But Mark Ramprakash brought stability to the crease to support Batty, as they added 60 for the third wicket. Batty was finally caught behind by Jones off Philip Edwards four short of his century. Edwards removed Usman Afzaal, who edged to Jones for 3, leaving Ramprakash and Matthew Spriegel at the crease at stumps, unbeaten on 41 and 9 respectively.Division OneImran Tahir starred for Hampshire against Somerset at The Rose Bowl, smashing an unbeaten career-best 77 off as many balls and taking 3 for 52, as the visitors were left trailing by 450 at stumps. Hampshire rattled up an impressive first-innings total of 548 and most of the damage came from Jimmy Adams on Thursday, who added 34 to his over-night score, ending on 147 as he was dismissed leg-before by Charl Willoughby. Dominic Cork’s quickfire 52 helped also, before he fell to young legspinner Max Waller but the total was swelled further as Tahir added 80 for the last wicket with 18-year-old Danny Briggs. Somerset got off to a solid reply, until the ball was thrown to Tahir. He broke the first-wicket partnership of 76 between Marcus Trescothick and Suppiah, as the latter was caught and bowled for 35 from a leading edge. Tahir then claimed two more; Langer was removed by a smart catch from Cork although the Somerset captain departed angrily, sure the ball hadn’t carried, and Hildreth managed four before becoming Tahir’s third3rd dayClick here for John Ward’s report from Scarborough.4th dayClick here for George Dobell’s report from Worcester.

Spurs without Lo Celso

As Tottenham Hotspur and manager Antonio Conte cope over a ‘very serious’ injury to defender Cristian Romero, the boss has confirmed that he will also be without midfielder Giovani Lo Celso.

The Lowdown: Spurs injury scares…

Since the September international break, a torrid period for Spurs given the amount of problems suffered by then-manager Nuno Espirito Santo, you could forgive any fan for loathing that time of the calendar.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments-2/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

That period alone saw Oliver Skipp, Ryan Sessegnon, Steven Bergwijn and Son Heung-min return from duty with problems as South American trio Lo Celso, Romero and Davinson Sanchez also had to train in isolation abroad (The Evening Standard).

The last international break in November was just as unlucky for Spurs, with star summer signing and Serie A MVP award-winner Romero returning with a hamstring injury having played for Argentina.

Lo Celso also flew back to north London available, and while Conte continues to sweat over his centre-back, it appears that he will also be without the 25-year-old for the clash against Brentford tonight.

The Latest: Pre-Brentford injury news confirmed…

Speaking to the press, Conte confirmed that he expects Lo Celso back after their clash with the Bees. The Italian explained (via football.london):

“Giovani Lo Celso, like Cristian Romero, they were injured with the national team. For sure it was a pity but Giovani’s situation is much, much better than Romero.”

“My expectation is to see him the day after we play against Brentford. He’s started to work, to work on the pitch. For sure Giovani is another player we need to try to exploit, to exploit him. He’s a good player and now I want to work with him.”

The Verdict: Big miss?

Lo Celso can often turn on the style at international level, as evident by Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni even calling him ‘one of the best’ in world football. Former Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has also heaped praise on him, branding the former Real Betis and Paris-Saint Germain star a ‘fantastic player’ (Sky Sports).

However, you could make the case that he is yet to fully realise his potential at club level, with Spurs insider John Wenham even branding the player a ‘passenger’ after Lo Celso’s Premier League outing in the regrettable 3-0 defeat to Man United at the end of October (Football Insider).

He is quite clearly a mixed bag with ability on the right given day, but as Conte seeks to guide Spurs back up the Premier League table, the 52-year-old could have used Lo Celso as an option at least.

Underdog tale reaches tough climax

It’s been a good underdog story so far, but now New Zealand come up against the biggest, the baddest, villains

The Preview by Sidharth Monga04-Oct-2009Match factsMonday, October 5, 2009
Start time 1430 (1230 GMT)Big pictureLeader of men: Daniel Vettori has got the most out of the resources available to him•Getty Images

Underdogs in films make a mockery of the form book. Exhibit 1: New Zealand come to the Champions Trophy, sans superstars, sans high ICC rankings, and after being well and truly battered for more than a month in the sapping heat of Sri Lanka. They are – it is fair to say – the outsiders in this tournament.Underdogs in the movies start out of their depth, find the happy knack of winning, and then start liking what they feel. Exhibit 2: New Zealand are outclassed by South Africa on a true Centurion pitch. Then Sri Lanka, fooled by the earlier two pitches at the Wanderers, put New Zealand in, and discover they have given their opponents first use of a batting beauty. Against England, New Zealand get a spitting beauty of a pitch, call right at the toss, and run through the batting.Underdogs in the movies are hit by injuries, handicaps, and miseries, but every setback inspires them. Exhibit 3: New Zealand lose Jacob Oram before their campaign starts. Jesse Ryder pulls his left abductor muscle during the Sri Lanka game, but before leaving plays the kind of innings that must have led to the coining of the phrase “beware the wounded batsman”. Then Daryl Tuffey, at the time looking their best bowler, breaks his hand while fielding and is ruled out for the rest of the tournament. Next up, Grant Elliott, hero of the win against England, breaks his thumb, but braves the injury to score a heroic unbeaten 75 in the semi-final.The real villains start appearing only in the later stages of underdog movies. Exhibit 4: On paper Pakistan have everything they need to end this underdog tale, but their occasional overconfidence and exceptional play from the underdogs take New Zealand to the final.Underdogs in the movies meet the biggest, scariest villain right at the end. Exhibit 5: It is always Australia’s fate, or that of any champion team, that their excellence, consistency, their hard work, will always be seen as villainous in romantic underdog stories. We can also conveniently forget that they too lost three of their most important players – Nathan Bracken, Michael Clarke and Brad Haddin – in the lead-up to the tournament. Champions, though, don’t deserve such considerations. Every good underdog story needs a mean villain, and Australia have rarely failed to oblige at world events. If more context is needed, New Zealand have historically seen Australia as big brothers, and have always sought to bring their best against them. Moreover, New Zealand are yet to beat Australia in a tournament final, and have lost six times (tournaments with more than one final have been considered as one). Centurion will not provide them with a freak pitch either. It’s all stacked up against New Zealand this time, and no self-respecting underdog story would have it any other way.How good this story is will be known by Monday evening, or rather early on Tuesday morning in Australia and New Zealand.Form guide(last five completed matches, most recent first)Australia – WWWLW
Ominously they are peaking at the right time. Even more ominously they have survived the one token scare that champion sides face, in the game against Pakistan.New Zealand – WWWLL
Their weakened line-up has made the rest even more determined. They will rely a lot on their bowlers and fielders to find a balance between defence and attack, and restrict Australia like they did Pakistan.Team newsBoth teams gave satisfactory performances in the semi-finals, and both are more or less settled – even if not entirely by design.Australia (probable): 1 Shane Watson, 2 Tim Paine (wk), 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 Cameron White, 6 Callum Ferguson, 7 James Hopes, 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Brett Lee, 10 Nathan Hauritz, 11 Peter Siddle.A discussion on allrounder Brendon Diamanti has its merits – Neil Broom hasn’t had much to do in the tournament – but New Zealand are not likely to tinker with a winning combination. And the way Elliott came through the semi-final, a big worry for them has been taken care of.New Zealand (probable): 1 Brendon McCullum (wk), 2 Aaron Redmond, 3 Martin Guptill, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Neil Broom, 6 Grant Elliot, 7 James Franklin, 8 Daniel Vettori (capt), 9 Kyle Mills, 10 Shane Bond, 11 Ian Butler.Watch out for…Daniel Vettori is definitely in the running for the Player-of-the-Series award. Against Sri Lanka he rescued a floundering middle order, and against Pakistan he promoted himself to No. 6 and guided a nervous side through to the final. And that’s besides his routine job, during which he has taken seven wickets at an average of 17.71 and an economy-rate of 3.97. He is now four wickets short of the leading wicket-taker of the tournament, Wayne Parnell.Ricky Ponting has a habit of turning it on on the big day. But he is a bruised captain, too, the only Australian leader since time immemorial to have lost the Ashes twice. He has also led them to successive unsuccessful campaigns at ICC events. When was the last time they failed to win three majors in a row?Shane Watson is a threat to Vettori for that series award. He has taken six wickets at 16.83, and put behind him the lean run with the bat that he experienced at the end of the England series and at the start of this event. If he bats like he did in the semi-final, we could be in for a swift finish.Pitch and conditionsCenturion, apart from the Pakistan-Australia game, has had flat batting pitches, which could made it harder for New Zealand to pull off an upset. A 30% chance of precipitation means we should get a complete game.Stats and trivia New Zealand have entered 13 tournament finals before this, and have won four of those.Since their 1999 World Cup triumph, Australia have reached 19 tournament finals, and have lost only three: in 1999 to Sri Lanka in Colombo, and two CB Series finals to England and India in 2006-07 and 2007-08 respectively. The whole New Zealand team has scored six ODI centuries between them (Ross Taylor 3 and Brendon McCullum, Martin Guptill and Grant Elliott one each), Ponting has 28. Australia have beaten New Zealand in six tournament finals. This will be their first meeting in a final at a neutral venue.Quotes”We are playing at a level which would win us the big games. We look to play best cricket when it matters. We are peaking at the right time for the finals.”
“But once you reach that level, you realise there is an immense desire to go all the way and I think there’s no relief in the camp. It was all about how we’re going to win tomorrow as opposed to it’s great the we’ve made it”

Fartura! Comando de ataque do Botafogo vive época de boas notícias

A doença de Roger e a perspectiva de que o centroavante titular não jogasse mais neste ano preocuparam a torcida do Botafogo. Brenner daria conta do recado? É verdade que o então reserva estava devendo boas atuações. Eram sete jogos e um gol. Entretanto, as coisas mudaram.
