Celtic: Yosuke Ideguchi agreement reached

Celtic have agreed a deal with Gamba Osaka for midfielder Yosuke Ideguchi, Yahoo Japan report.

The Lowdown: Busy January in store…

The Hoops look set to have a busy start to the New Year, with Ange Postecoglou after two more Japanese additions alongside Ideguchi in Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-18/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

There could also be a number of outgoings, with the likes of Albian Ajeti and Vasilis Barkas linked with Parkhead exits.

It appears as if Celtic are making good progress ahead of the transfer window opening in regards to Ideguchi, who has been described as a player who likes to ‘give it out’.

The Latest: Ideguchi deal reached

Yahoo Japan shared a story on Thursday, revealing a fee of over €1m has been reached for the 25-year-old.

They claim that there are still visa issues to resolve, however, Ideguchi is set to fly to Scotland before the end of the year for a medical.

The Verdict: Good news…

Celtic need all the January reinforcements they can get with the number of injuries they are picking up.

Ajeti and Furuhashi were the latest to pick up knocks on Thursday evening, leaving Postecoglou with limited options in attack.

Ideguchi won’t be able to provide cover in attack, however, he’ll be another body in midfield, with Callum McGregor, Tom Rogic and David Turnbull relied on heavily by Postecoglou so far.

Hopefully, a transfer will be wrapped up quickly in the New Year, and who knows, should that be the case, Ideguchi could be around for the Glasgow derby on January 2.

Dyson doubts West Indies' chances

John Dyson does not expect Chris Gayle’s outfit to trouble Australia during the three-Test series

John Dyson says West Indies cricket is “stuck in the past”•Getty Images

John Dyson, the former West Indies coach, does not expect Chris Gayle’s outfit to trouble Australia during the three-Test series because of their disrupted preparation. The squad’s major players are on their first tour since a lengthy strike and Dyson, who was dismissed in September, doubts the tourists’ credentials against the world’s No. 4 team.”Because of the lack of cricket and the preparation that they’ve had, it’s going to be a difficult summer,” Dyson said in the Sunday Herald Sun. “They just haven’t played enough serious cricket – most of them have been on strike. They’re going to have to find form very quickly.”Dyson, who played 30 Tests for Australia, spent two years in the Caribbean and said the region’s cricket was “stuck in the past”. “You look at that great era they had [in the 1980s and 90s] and what a fantastic team it was – they were just blessed at that particular time with a team of great players,” Dyson said. “But given the way everyone else has progressed and the West Indies haven’t, it’s difficult to see that happening again. Everyone else has moved forward.”The visitors arrived in Australia on Friday and have their only warm-up for the first Test, which starts at the Gabba on November 26, against Queensland from Wednesday. David Williams, the new coach, expects to pick a full strength line-up for the four-day fixture and has Gayle, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Dwayne Bravo to call on.

India should play more Tests – Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar has expressed his disappointment at India not playing enough Tests in the near future

Nagraj Gollapudi in Mumbai13-Nov-2009

“It would be nice if I can go on that that long (till 2015) but I don’t want to think that far”•AFP

Sachin Tendulkar has expressed his disappointment at India not playing enough Tests in the near future. Besides the three Tests in the upcoming home series against Sri Lanka, which begins in Ahmedabad on November 16, India play only two more Tests, in Bangladesh in January, in the 2009-10 season. There are no further Test series planned at least till the end of the 2010.”We should play more Test cricket for sure. It is obviously not great news that we are only playing five Tests this season,” Tendulkar said at a media event on Friday to commemorate his completing 20 years in international cricket.Test cricket, he said, was the true testing ground for any youngster and the best way to fast track his development. “Ideally for any team to progress you need to play more Test cricket as that is where the real cricket is according to me. Test cricket is cricket of the highest level and since it is played across five days at the end of each day it allows you to regroup, re-think, come up with fresh ideas and plan for the next day. Sometimes in Twenty20 and ODIs even before you realise the match is over.”As a 16-year-old Tendulkar cut his teeth in the 1989 Test series against Pakistan and immediately understood it was not going to be easy. In the final Test of that series, Waqar Younis drew blood after striking Tendulkar on the nose. Ajit Tendulkar, his elder brother, the man whom Sachin counts as his biggest influence as a player, was sitting in the stands. Ajit might have winced but his brother didn’t: “When I was hit by Waqar that got me more competitive and I decided not to move from the middle and I would continue to fight,” Tendulkar animatedly recounted the incident to a 75-odd media contingent.Though the event was by invitation only for a select group of journalists, a lot of media personnel – aware of the unique opportunity it presented – gatecrashed the event. Tendulkar remained unruffled and for the next five hours remained seated in the middle of the room, answering hundreds of questions, even if most were repeated. Displaying the same proficiency he has shown against various forms of bowling, Tendulkar moved seamlessly from English to Hindi to Marathi in his responses, paying detailed attention to the questioner’s every word. While his zeal for the game continues to amaze, he is not at all surprised by it. He says it is because he is passionate about what he does and is confident and clear about what he wants to do.It’s not his fans alone who wonder how Tendulkar has been strong in various situations and stayed competitive over the last two decades; MS Dhoni, the India captain, recently said he did not rule out Tendulkar being in contention to play the 2015 World Cup.Tendulkar, though, said he wanted to live in the moment and plan for the near future instead of dwelling on what could happen five years down the line.”It would be nice if I can go on that that long (till 2015) but I don’t want to think that far and concentrate on the next phase,” he said. “My focus is on the near future. I’ve enjoyed every bit so far and I feel there is cricket left in me and everything is going really well.”

Spurs planning Hugo Lloris contract talks

Tottenham Hotspur are hoping to tie down Hugo Lloris to a new contract in the coming weeks.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a recent report by Charlie Eccleshare for The Athletic, in which the journalist revealed that, despite being tempted by a move to AS Roma this summer, the goalkeeper is now keen to extend his stay in north London.

Eccleshare added that Antonio Conte is also eager to tie down the France international to a new deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with the 34-year-old’s current contract set to expire at the end of the season. That means the shot-stopper can discuss terms with foreign clubs regarding a free transfer from January 1.

However, the journalist then claimed that there is a quiet confidence at Spurs that they will be able to reach an agreement with Lloris, with negotiations regarding a fresh deal expected to intensify in the coming weeks.

Paratici must avoid disaster

Considering just how important Lloris has proven to be for Spurs this season, not to mention over the past nine Premier League campaigns, it would undoubtedly be something of a disaster for Fabio Paratici to allow the 34-year-old to depart north London on a free transfer next summer.

Indeed, over his 14 Premier League appearances this term, the £8.1m-rated shot-stopper has kept six clean sheets, as well as making 2.9 saves per game. These returns have seen the Frenchman averaging an impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.05, ranking him as Spurs’ sixth-best performer in the top flight.

Conte is also a huge fan of the £100k-per-week 34-year-old, stating after Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Brentford last week: “I just arrived. I’ve only been here a month. At the moment, of course, we have several situations to resolve. Hugo Lloris is the captain of this team. He is the captain of the France team too. We’re talking about a world-class goalie.

“We will have time to talk about him. I consider him an important player for Tottenham, for his experience and because he is first and foremost a good goalkeeper. He has played for many years with Tottenham and he is still invested in this club.”

As such, with Lloris very much appearing to be an important part of Conte’s first-team plans at Spurs, Paratici simply must do all he can to ensure that the 34-year-old does indeed put pen to paper on a new deal with the club in the coming weeks, or else the shot-stopper may be tempted by an intriguing offer come January 1.

Watson wrecks chances of maiden century

Plays of the day from the third day between Australia and West Indies in Adelaide

Alex Brown at Adelaide Oval06-Dec-2009

Down and out: Shane Watson wanted four runs but lasted two balls•Getty Images

Oh no, Watto
Even the most hardened of West Indies fans would have felt a pang of sympathy for Shane Watson. Resuming play just four runs short of his maiden Test century, Watson attempted to swipe the second ball of the day through midwicket, only for Sulieman Benn to breach his defences and hit the top of off stump. A disconsolate Watson kicked at the air and trudged from the field, aware that he had missed a prime opportunity join the Test centurion ranks. No word yet on whether Watson offered to assist the South Australian Cricket Association by bringing forward the planned demolition date of the Adelaide Oval dressing rooms. No Siddle in the middle
Australia need to knock West Indies over cheaply in their second innings, so it was a concern for the home fans when Peter Siddle didn’t take the field when Chris Gayle and Adrian Barath walked out to bat. Siddle had a tight hamstring and is no certainty to bowl on the fourth day, but Michael Hussey was confident he would take his place at some point. “I certainly hope so,” Hussey said. “I think it was more precautionary tonight, just leave him out of tonight so his leg has got another 12 hours or so to try and give him a good go tomorrow. I’m pretty confident that he’ll be out there tomorrow for us.”Conversion tables
Ricky Ponting has long emphasised the importance of batsmen converting 50s to 100s, but his calls have failed to inspire his troops of late. Of the last 12 Australian batsmen to pass the half-century mark, only one, Hussey at The Oval, has reached triple figures. Simon Katich is most culpable, having scored 80, 92 and 50 in his last three Tests, while Ponting himself has twice fallen short of a century after passing 50 in that time.Wise Sulieman prediction
Prior to the Brisbane Test, the West Indies interim coach David Williams touted Benn a likely trump card for the three-Test tour. Benn may have possessed a Test average nudging 50, but Williams felt the bounce of Australian wickets would suit the 200cm Bajan against a batting line-up that has seldom looked comfortable facing quality finger spin. Having performed solidly in a losing cause at the Gabba, Benn arrived at Adelaide Oval with much to prove. And so it transpired. Watson, Simon Katich, Michael Clarke, Marcus North and Siddle formed the hit-list for Benn’s maiden five-wicket haul in Tests, handing West Indies a 12-run first-innings lead. The last time West Indies held a first-innings advantage on Australia was the Perth Test of 1996-97. They went on to win the match by ten wickets. What are the odds?
Punters have taken a dim view of West Indies since their arrival on Australian shores. With the Australians two wickets down in pursuit of the tourists’ first-innings total of 451, betting agencies were offering A$21 on West Indies breaking their nine-Test losing streak on Australian soil. That reduced to $17 at the fall of Ricky Ponting’s wicket, and $7.50 by the time the tourists headed to stumps with an overall lead of 35 and all second-innings wickets intact.

Jogou onde?

Minha esposa me acordou falando dos primeiros rumores. Eram grandes amigos que a bola me deu.

Leeds: Augustin Alvarez update emerges

Leeds United may have to battle La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid in the race to sign Agustin Alvarez in January, according to Mundo Deportivo, translated by Sports Witness.

The Lowdown: Alvarez profiled

Alvarez is a 20-year-old centre-forward who currently plies his trade for Uruguayan side Penarol.

He’s scored 33 goals for his current employers and one for Uruguay, with his Transfermarkt valuation rocketing in 2021 from £270,000 to £4.05m.

Leeds currently have Patrick Bamford and Rodrigo out injured, and it appears as if Victor Orta and Andrea Radrizzani could spend in the New Year as a result.

The Latest: Update emerges

Sports Witness relayed claims from Mundo Deportivo’s print newspaper in a story on Monday regarding Alvarez.

They suggested that both Barcelona and Real Madrid are keen on the forward, with a €12m (£10.2m) fee thought to be enough for Penarol to sell. Leeds, led by Orta of course, have reportedly already made contact for Alvarez and could make an offer in 2022.

The Verdict: Time to swoop?

Marcelo Bielsa’s attacking options are limited at this moment in time with Bamford and Rodrigo sidelined, with winger Dan James the latest to occupy a centre-forward role in the 7-0 defeat to Manchester City.

Tyler Roberts and teenager Joe Gelhardt have also been used, but bolstering the club’s attacking ranks with Alvarez could prove to be a shrewd move in both the short and long term.

A £10.2m fee should be in Leeds’ reach as well, compared to a £25m figure Blackburn want for Ben Brereton Diaz, and a few winter window additions could prove to be the difference in the club’s battle to avoid relegation in what could prove to be Bielsa’s final season.

In other news: Leeds now back in for summer target who is ‘like a beast’ – reliable journalist.
