Ashes loom but Australia must remain focused

As Ricky Ponting walked through the MCC Museum at Lord’s on Monday, he passed within metres of the Ashes urn. He was on his way to face the TV cameras ahead of a neutral series against Pakistan but in an Ashes year, how could he not have one eye on regaining the greatest prize in Australian cricket? The tiny trophy was right there in front of him, taunting him, yet he must wait four months before it is up for grabs.Between now and November, Australia have four Tests to put themselves into an Ashes-winning frame of mind. They have made a good start, having won seven of their eight Tests since leaving England empty-handed last year. Stumbling against Pakistan, who haven’t beaten them in a Test in nearly 15 years, would be a massive snag in their plans. For that reason, Ponting has his sights set firmly on stopping Shahid Afridi, the new Pakistan captain, from having any influence on the game. In a side without Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan, Afridi is the undisputed leader of a young group. He claims to have restored the unity of the team but Ponting knows that if Afridi fails on the field, so might his colleagues.”From an outsider’s point of view at the moment it looks as though they’re sort of running a bit off him,” Ponting said. “I think a lot of their younger blokes look up to him and he’s their leader, the bloke they go to when they need something to happen, so it’s pretty much like every captain of every side is. We always talk about trying to nullify the captain and take the captain down early and we’ll try and do that in this series as well, there’s no doubt about that.”Equally, while Australia are keen to shut down a new-look Pakistan, they also want to try some fresh ideas themselves. Steven Smith will audition for an Ashes role, Tim Paine will gain valuable experience in case he is required again in the near future and Michael Clarke will be promoted to No. 4, a shift that will remain in place for the Ashes. The move up the order for Clarke is a significant step for the man most likely to be Australia’s next Test captain, and potentially their No. 3 when Ponting eventually retires. Over the past year, Clarke has been Australia’s leading Test run scorer while Michael Hussey, who is heading down to No. 5, has sometimes looked scratchy when exposed to the new ball.”It’s just about how well he’s played,” Ponting said of Clarke. “I think his game is very well suited to higher up the order against the new ball, probably a bit more than what Hussey’s is right at the moment. That’s the reason. He has been our most consistent player and that’s been in pretty much all conditions around the world.”The last Ashes series over here he showed that at different times and in challenging times when the ball was moving around quite a bit, that he can do the job up the order. He has developed his game nicely over the last couple of years and hence when you have those guys who are playing that well, we all know they need to be batting as soon as possible, so that’s why he’s moved up an extra spot.”It’s a change that was made with the Ashes in mind. In England last year, Clarke was comfortably Australia’s leading scorer and not surprisingly, they want to get the most out of him in the return battle. The two Tests at Lord’s and Headingley, in addition to the two Tests in India in October, will also provide some insight into Australia’s bowling ahead of the Ashes.Ben Hilfenhaus is back after a long bout of knee tendonitis, which kept him out of all but the first Test of Australia’s home summer, while Smith’s ability as a Test-class spinner will be closely monitored. If he shows enough promise in England, and in India if given the chance, he could threaten Nathan Hauritz come the first Test at the Gabba. All in all, Ponting sees the next two weeks as a valuable building block towards Ashes redemption.”It absolutely is,” he said. “But we’re not solely focused on November. We’ve got a lot of cricket to play before then. I see this as a great opportunity for the young guys to gain some more experience about Test cricket. It’s the true form of the game, it’s the game that tests you out the most, so we’re going to be learning a lot about our players in not only this game but every game we play before the start of the Ashes.”Australia should remain too strong for Pakistan but if they cast their gaze too far ahead, their building block could turn into a stumbling block.

Key Phillips and Raphinha news emerges

Influential Leeds United duo Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha are both discussing new deals at Elland Road, according to journalist Jacque Talbot.

The Lowdown: Crucial Phillips and Raphinha

The Whites have had their fair share of iconic figures at Elland Road down the years but Phillips and Raphinha are arguably the biggest names at the club currently.

The former has been a fantastic performer for a number of seasons now, even earning international recognition as England’s Player of the Year, while the latter has been a joy to watch out wide since arriving from Rennes in 2020, earning his own place as a world-renowned superstar for Brazil.

Constant speculation continues to surround the futures of the pair – both were linked with moves to West Ham in January – but a big update has now emerged.

The Latest: Massive update emerges

Writing on Twitter on Tuesday, Talbot, who writes for the likes of The Mirror and the Guardian, claimed talks are underway regarding new deals for both Phillips and Raphinha:

“Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips both in discussions with Leeds over contract renewals, I’m told.”

He then added: “Both their current deals end in 2024. For me, this is a shining example of the belief players have for Bielsa and for the future, despite Leeds‘ precarious league position.”

The Verdict: Hugely exciting news

This is an enormous boost for Leeds, with both Phillips and Raphina so integral to the team’s success moving forward, considering they are both established internationals who are key for England and Brazil ahead of the 2022 World Cup, respectively.

Phillips’ quality and tenacity in midfield make him the hub of Bielsa’s side, with 2.3 tackles won per game in the league this season, while Raphinha is Leeds’ top scorer with eight goals – double the amount of second-placed pair Dan James and Jack Harrison.

If the Whites managed to tie down both of their current stars to new deals it would genuinely feel like a couple of big-name signings – while Raphinha may be harder to keep hold of, it would ensure the club banks a big fee if he does move on to pastures new.

In other news, Bielsa reportedly wanted two players in one position in January. Read more here.

Manchester United: Journalist mocks Matic

Manchester United correspondent Jamie Jackson has pinned the blame on the ‘ponderous’ Nemanja Matic for Everton’s goal in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat.

The lowdown

United suffered a shock loss against the relegation-threatened Toffees following Anthony Gordon’s 27th-minute strike.

The result leaves them three points behind fourth-place Tottenham Hotspur, having played a game more than Antonio Conte’s side.

Ralf Rangnick elected to restore Matic to the starting line-up after naming him amongst the substitutes last time out against Leicester City.

The manager paired the 33-year-old Serbian with Fred in his two-man midfield.

But Matic was dispossessed by Everton midfielder Allan in the attacking half, and The Toffees proceeded to launch the attack that led to Gordon’s goal.

The latest

Jackson, who covers United for The Guardian, felt Matic had been punished for dwelling on the ball.

“All from Matic, more ponderous than a pond,” he tweeted after the goal.

The verdict

It was a difficult 65 minutes for Matic at Goodison Park before Juan Mata replaced him.

He lost three of the four ground duels he contested and also conceded possession 14 times overall (via SofaScore).

Of all the United players on the pitch, only Marcus Rashford (seven) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (four) came off second best in more ground duels than the midfielder.

You could argue, however, that he wasn’t solely to blame the goal that Everton scored.

Indeed, The Athletic’s Adam Crafton suggested that Harry Maguire’s attempt to block the shot was ‘really bad’, with the ball cannoning off the Englishman and beyond David de Gea.

In other news, Fabrizio Romano has dropped this manager insight.

Australia's Ashes plans get serious

Australia’s Ashes planning will take a step up early this week when the team’s senior figures meet in Melbourne

Australia’s Ashes planning started from the moment of Michael Hussey’s dismissal at The Oval last August, but it will take a step up early this week when the team’s senior figures meet in Melbourne. Even though Australia face India, the Test No.1, in October, the talks will be dominated by England’s visit. Not since 1986-87 have England lifted the urn in Australia and a central theme of the hosts’ Ashes planning conference on Monday and Tuesday is not letting it happen again. Home advantage has been crucial in the past three series between the teams, but this time age could also be a determining factor in the campaign that begins at the Gabba on November 25.If Peter Siddle, Brad Haddin and Nathan Hauritz all prove their fitness before then, which is the hope of the national selection panel, Australia could field an outfit that has only one change from the one that lost by 197 runs in south London. Stuart Clark played instead of Hauritz in that match and when the Gabba game starts three of the preferred top six – Ricky Ponting, Simon Katich and Michael Hussey – will be 35.England have eased to a 2-0 lead in the current series against Pakistan, who drew with Australia last month, and are benefitting from an injection of young talent. Only four of their players are over 30 and they boast the impressive Steve Finn, a 21-year-old fast bowler. Overall, it makes England the most confident of a win in Australia since the last time, when they were beaten 5-0.Michael Brown, Cricket Australia’s general manager of cricket, said the Ashes planning conference would take in a range of items. “All of the Australian team management, including Ricky Ponting, are all coming down to talk about what is the ultimate preparation,” he said.Discussions will also focus on how to juggle workloads ahead of the World Cup, as well as making sure all squad members gain enough game-time in the 50-over genre. On Friday Cricket Australia revealed its split-innings format for domestic matches, meaning the only traditional one-day fixtures will occur at international level in the country in 2010-11.The Ashes rivalry took another twist last week when John Buchanan joined the England camp to help them prepare. Justin Langer, one of Buchanan’s success stories as Australia’s coach, is not concerned by the appointment.”John was one of the greatest coaches I ever worked with so it’s a positive for England,” Langer said in the Daily Telegraph. “But I also strongly believe that at the end of the day, when James Anderson or Stuart Broad run in to bowl the first ball in Brisbane to Simon Katich or Shane Watson, it won’t matter what coaches England have got.”It’s going to be about who’s got the biggest balls, who’s going to stare down their opponent, who’s going to win those battles. That’s what it comes down to in Test cricket.”

Kent keep semi hopes alive

Kent kept alive their hopes of reaching the Clydesdale Bank 40 semi-finals with a comfortable victory over Leicestershire in their Group C clash at Grace Road.

30-Aug-2010
ScorecardKent kept alive their hopes of reaching the Clydesdale Bank 40 semi-finals with a comfortable victory over Leicestershire in their Group C clash at Grace Road. After dismissing the Foxes for 182 in 38.1 overs the Spitfires cruised to their target with little trouble to clinch a six-wicket win with 6.4 overs to spare.Openers Joe Denly and Robert Key provided the platform for the victory with a stand of 86 in the first 15 overs. Then, after a mini collapse when four wickets fell for 36 runs, Darren Stevens and Alex Blake steered Kent home with an unbeaten stand of 73.The Foxes, who have not won at home in the competition since beating Nottinghamshire in their first match in April, fell away badly after making a solid start to their innings. Put in to bat they raced to 52 for 1 in the eight overs of Powerplay with James Benning and Jacques Du Toit sharing a stand of 44 before Benning was bowled by a well disguised slower ball from Matthew Coles. But the run out of Du Toit for 25 six overs later triggered a collapse which saw four wickets crash for 10 runs in four overs, leaving the Foxes struggling at 81 for 5. The innings was given some much needed backbone by Matthew Boyce and Tom New who joined forces in a sixth-wicket partnership of 79 in 16 overs. The two left-handers played sensibly but took their opportunities to pick up boundaries off anything off line or loose. But the stand was finally broken by some clever bowling from leg spinner Malinga Bandara who had Boyce smartly stumped by Geraint Jones as he stretched forward having made 41 off 58 balls.Although New continued to defy the Kent attack with an unbeaten 47 the innings folded alarmingly with the last three wickets falling 11 runs in 13 balls with the Foxes unable to bat through the full 40 overs. Coles finished with 3 for 27 and there was two wickets apiece for Bandara and Simon Cook.Denly and Key gave the Spitfires a flying start with a succession of boundaries. Denly hit five fours and a six in a knock of 40 and Key hit seven boundaries before being trapped lbw by Matthew Hoggard for 45.Then Stevens and Blake ensured Kent stayed in the hunt for a semi-final place with a brisk sixth-wicket stand, Stevens hitting the winning boundary off Alex Wyatt to finish with 42 not out. Blake was 41 not out off 40 balls having hit six fours and a six.One unusual note from the match was that there was not a single catch in a game in which a total of 14 wickets fell.
