Du Plessis insists he's not a cheat

Faf du Plessis has described himself as a “morally good person” who does not want to be associated with cheating in his first comment since the ball-tampering episode

South Africa batsman Faf du Plessis has described himself as a “morally good person” who does not want to be associated with cheating in his first public comment since the ball-tampering episode that took place during the second Test against Pakistan in Dubai last month.South Africa had five penalty runs awarded against them and the ball was changed after the 30th over of Pakistan’s second innings, when the on-field umpires identified du Plessis as the person who changed the condition of the ball. Du Plessis was later booked under law 42 and fined 50% of his match fee after he did not contest the charge. In the immediate aftermath, AB de Villiers had insisted that South Africa “are not cheats.” After du Plessis pleaded guilty and was sanctioned, team manager Mohammad Moosajee read out a statement explaining that they had decided not to contest du Plessis’ charge because they feared doing so would result in a greater penalty. They said calling du Plessis’ actions ball tampering was “harsh,” though the ICC had termed it as such.In his column for South African sports website, SuperSport.com, du Plessis insisted he did not intentionally tamper with the ball and was merely drying it. “We all know in cricket that there is a ball to be worked on and kept shiny,” he wrote. “In the UAE, the added element is that it’s incredibly hot and part of the challenge is keeping the ball dry from the sweat of the bowlers. So, in a team you have designated ball ‘shiners’ and ball ‘workers’, and I’m one of them. It’s usually the guys who don’t bowl or who don’t sweat as much as the others.”There are ways of ‘working’ the ball as much as possible within the rules, such as bouncing the ball on the wicket, trying to bowl cross-seam, and basically trying to scuff the ball as much as possible, naturally, so that it’s easier for the bowlers to grip.”So, I was trying to keep the ball as dry as possible. As the footage showed, I was on the rough side of the ball, and I’ll be the first to admit that I was working it far too close to my zip. That’s obviously what the third umpire saw on TV.”But, when the on-field umpires inspected the ball, there wasn’t a scratch mark or anything untoward on the ball. In fact, it was in excellent shape and wasn’t reverse-swinging at all. Basically, the condition of the ball hadn’t been changed, and that’s why I think my penalty was not as harsh as the sentences given out for other similar incidents.”Harsher penalties for ball-tampering include up to 100% of the players’ match fee and a ban of one Test, two ODIs or two T20s, but du Plessis escaped that. In response, the PCB, whose players have been banned from matches in the past, wrote a letter to the ICC seeking clarification for the inconsistencies in the application of the law. There has yet to be a public comment explaining the different sentences.Du Plessis indicated he wants to put the incident behind him and said he has learnt to “always make sure you are morally on the right side of things.””I pride myself on being a morally good person, and that’s why this past week has been so difficult, as people have been quick to label me a cheat. That’s not the kind of person I am and it’s not the kind of person I want to be associated with.”He also said he has become extra wary during his ball-drying duties. “When someone throws me the ball, I’m afraid to even look at it, and rather just catch it and get rid of it.”

– Pedro sempre chamou a atenção.

Sharad Pawar, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) president, has been restrained from discharging his duties by a Mumbai court. Pawar, who is also the union minister for agriculture, was granted a week’s time to appeal the decision in a higher court. The Mumbai city civil court’s order came after a suit was filed by senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Gopinath Munde, who had been prevented from contesting the MCA elections on the technicality that he was not a permanent resident of Mumbai. Though Munde owned property in Mumbai, he is on the electoral rolls in the Beed district of Maharashtra.Munde’s lawyer argued that former union minister Vilasrao Deshmukh had faced a similar issue in 2011 but was allowed to contest the MCA elections. After Munde was not allowed to stand for election, Pawar was the only candidate and he was elected unopposed on October 18.

Green pitch may stymie West Indies spin

Any hope West Indies had of being able to utilise two spinners at Wellington may well have been quashed as soon as the covers were removed from the pitch

The sight of Shane Shillingford troubling New Zealand’s top order on the final day in Dunedin had peaked West Indies’ excitement at the prospect of confounding them with spin in the remainder of this series, but that notion may have to be put on hold. The 22 yards at the Basin Reserve was barely discernible from the outfield after the covers were belatedly removed following a damp morning.West Indies, though, are encouraged by the fitness of Darren Sammy and the captain took a full part in the fielding drills on Monday without any noticeable discomfort. Although he still needs to bowl in the nets, the signs are that he will take a full part in the Test.Sunil Narine and Veerasammy Permaul are the other spinners in the squad, with the former favourite to come into the side if two are selected. Shane Warne often reels off the saying “if it seams, it spins”, but playing just two pace bowlers is unthinkable if the groundsman leaves such a covering. However, one benefit West Indies do have is that Narsingh Deonarine bowls useful offspin, and so can supplement the same balance of attack as West Indies used in Dunedin.”That’s a strong possibility,” Ottis Gibson, the West Indies coach, said when asked about playing an extra spinner and as the rain kept the pitch covered. “We have to look at the pitch first. We’ve heard some things about it, that we won’t be able to tell the pitch from the outfield so that will make us think for sure about two spinners or not. Shannon Gabriel did not have a good Test, he did not bowl very well, but we believe in him – that’s why we picked him – he’s shown he can be a quality performer. We have to give them the confidence they need.”Real-Time Snicko added after push from teams

Real-Time Snicko will be used for the remainder of this series after both New Zealand and West Indies expressed keenness to have the new technology available.

It was run behind the scenes in Dunedin, and not as part of the DRS, and will now be fully implemented for the Wellington and Hamilton Tests. Geoff Allardice, the ICC’s general manager – cricket, was in Wellington to give the management of both sides a briefing on Monday.

Real-Time Snicko allows the third umpire to see a replay with the pictures matched with audio almost instantly to help adjudicate on edges. Previously, the snicko replays would take up to an over to produce.

Two days out from a Test is always a tricky time to be judging what the pitch will actually start like, but even within the New Zealand team there was consensus that they had never seen so much grass on a surface at this ground, even for domestic matches where groundsmen tend to produce livelier surfaces.”Even in first-class cricket when you arrive there’s normally a bit more grass on, but I’ve never seen it looking that green,” Peter Fulton said. “It’ll be interesting to see if it does as much as what it looks like it’ll do.”It’s a little bit hard to pick it out from the rest of the block so I’m sure the bowlers will be happy. The last couple of years in New Zealand the wickets have been batter-friendly so there are certainly no complaints from the batters. You don’t expect it to be good for batting all the time.”New Zealand undoubtedly have the stronger hand of pace bowlers – Doug Bracewell is the other available in the squad should a change or addition be required – but there may be a double-edged sword if the pitch is still very green come Wednesday morning because they are coming off the back of 224 overs in the field over the last three days in Dunedin. The bowlers were given a day off on Monday, and are unlikely to do much work tomorrow, either, as they are protected ahead of the Test. There has been some criticism of the Dunedin pitch, but without rain the Test would have concluded with a result in the final session – which is a good yardstick for a well-balanced surface. It was, though, hard work for the quicks and the sight of something promising more life is helping to ease away those aches and pains.”It’s going to be totally different than Dunedin. As a bowler I do enjoy coming here; a lot more pace and bounce and it does swing here,” Trent Boult said. “It was a pretty heavy workload but I’m feeling good. The whole bowling group are feeling good and taking a nice couple of easy days.”Test cricket is extremely strenuous on the body and you’ve got to work out a plan and what works well for you. It takes a lot to keep going at that intensity and you’ve got to be smart with your down time.”West Indies’ quick bowlers, though, are under instruction to improve from their Dunedin showing. “Our bowlers, whenever we got two or three balls right, we looked like getting an edge – sometimes they went over slip – but the New Zealand batsmen just had to wait for a poor ball to score off,” Gibson said. “New Zealand bowled with great discipline, especially Southee and Boult in the first innings, and we have to learn from them. Patience is a skill in itself and something we need to work on as a bowling group.”

BCCI moves Supreme Court against Modi

The BCCI has moved the Supreme Court challenging the participation of Lalit Modi in the Rajasthan Cricket Association elections

The BCCI claimed that Lalit Modi’s nomination was improper•AFP

The BCCI has moved the Supreme Court challenging the participation of Lalit Modi in the Rajasthan Cricket Association elections. The decision to do so was taken by the working committee last week, where it was agreed upon that the board would intervene in the ongoing case filed by former RCA chief Kishore Rungta and would seek clarification from the Supreme Court regarding the BCCI’s resolution to ban the former IPL chairman for life.Modi is expected to return to cricket administration as RCA president, the election for which was held last month. The results will be out on January 6 with the ballots in possession of the Supreme Court till then. The court is monitoring the elections and has appointed a former judge, Narendra Kasliwal, to oversee the process. While expelling Modi on multiple charges of misconduct, the BCCI had said that “he shall not in future be entitled to hold any position or office, or be admitted in any committee or any member or associate member of the board”. Modi, however, got his candidature for the RCA presidency approved by the Supreme Court by exploiting a technicality that the RCA was governed by the Rajasthan Sports Act.The BCCI filed a petition in the Supreme Court holding that that any association that its state bodies maintain with Modi is tantamount to tarnishing of the board’s image. The BCCI’s petition to the apex court also claimed that Modi’s nomination was improper as it was carried out despite the board’s stern objection to the same. The RCA elections were overseen by two Supreme Court-appointed former judges, with Modi allowed to contest as the polls were not governed by BCCI rules. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the case on January 6.
