Liverpool Make Move For "Incredible" £50m "Hero"

Liverpool are in pursuit of Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Ruben Neves, and are now believed to have made their move to tie up a deal for the Portuguese ace.

What's the latest on Ruben Neves to Liverpool?

That's according to Football Insider, who claim that the Old Gold are set to accept a £50m bid for their most coveted asset with just one year remaining on his current deal and no resolution in sight.

The report continues to claim that the Reds have requested to be kept informed about potential developments in the situation, and with the 26-year-old completing an emotional lap of honour after his final home game of the term against Everton it appears that a departure is forthcoming.

Barcelona are also interested, with Spanish sources previously indicating that La Blaugrana had the lead in the race, but Ansu Fati's refusal to be included as a makeweight in a prospective transfer has left Liverpool ready to pounce.

How good is Ruben Neves?

Liverpool will target several midfielders capable of making a marked improvement on Jurgen Klopp's squad this summer, with Europa League football the destination after failing to qualify for the top four.

James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are all departing at the end of their contracts, while captain Jordan Henderson and pass master Thiago Alcantara are both 32, with the captain 33 in one month's time.

The "incredible" Neves – as lauded by former teammate Hugo Bueno – is at the peak of his powers right now and has been the centrepiece of Wolves' success since rising from the Championship and reaching a Europa League quarter-final, forging 252 appearances, scoring 30 goals and providing 13 assists.

The 39-cap machine has been robust and dynamic from his conducting role this term, which is evidenced by his average Sofascore rating of 7.26, scoring six goals from 34 outings, completing 83% of his passes, averaging 0.9 key passes per game and making 2.3 tackles, 2.4 clearances and 1.5 interceptions each match.

Having been a "hero" for his side during his time at Molineux, as lauded by journalist Matt Maher, the midfield titan would provide composure and steel to the Liverpool centre, bolstering the ranks with his tenacious, unflinching demeanour on the pitch.

His arrival would only serve to enhance the endeavours of centre-back Virgil van Dijk, who has been criticised for some of his performances this season amid Liverpool's strife.

The club's issues this season have largely been a product of negligence on the transfer market over the past several years, with Thiago the only senior midfield signing since 2018, and for all the Spaniard's prowess with the ball, there is a belief that he has "slowed" the Reds down with his distinctive style of play – as per club legend John Barnes – with his injury record also less than admirable.

Van Djik has consequently suffered from the absence of control and energy in the midfield this term, with one journalist branding him "nonchalant".

While the Dutch titan is not the most tackle-happy centre-back in the Premier League – he ranks among the bottom 4% of centre-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for tackles per 90 – this is largely a product of his commanding style of play and efficacy in timing his defensive movements to inhibit opposing attacks.

Equally, the former Southampton man is also adept at sweeping away the danger when it presents itself, as he has made 4.2 clearances on average per game in the Premier League this term and won 70% of his contested duels.

A sturdy conductor would not only reignite the Reds midfield but serve as a buffer for the back four, and with Van Dijk not quite so imperious anymore, renewed vitality in the mould of Neves would only serve to enhance his side's prospects of success next season and beyond.

Newcastle have held Christian Eriksen talks

An update has emerged on Newcastle United’s pursuit of Christian Eriksen during the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

Northern Echo reporter Scott Wilson has claimed that the club have held discussions with the player’s agent as they attempt to sign the midfielder in the coming weeks.

He Tweeted: “TRANSFER LATEST: NUFC have held preliminary talks with Christian Eriksen’s representatives – but accept that, at this stage, Man Utd and Tottenham are much likelier destinations for the Dane, who will not be staying at Brentford…”

The Denmark international signed a short-term deal with the Bees in January and can now join another team on a free transfer ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

Supporters will be excited

Whilst Newcastle are not the favourites to land him, supporters will be excited by the club’s attempts to snap the gem up and will be buzzing with the prospect of watching the magician in black and white next season.

If the Magpies are able to fight off interest from Tottenham and Manchester United then it would be a huge coup for the club as Eriksen is a brilliant talent who has proven that he is an exceptional Premier League performer.

Prior to spells with Brentford and Inter, the midfielder spent seven seasons in the English top-flight with Spurs and averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.22 or higher in four of those campaigns – with two of them coming before the site registered ratings.

This illustrates how much experience he has in the division and shows that he knows what it takes to deliver high-quality performances on a consistent basis.

After suffering a cardiac arrest at the European Championships, Eriksen made a remarkable return to the Premier League with Brentford in January of this year.

He slotted straight back into his old self as he averaged a phenomenal SofaScore rating of 7.53 across 11 appearances for the club. In that time, he chipped in with one goal and four assists as he created a whopping 2.8 chances per game from central midfield.

These outstanding statistics prove that he still has what it takes to be a brilliant performer in the Premier League, with BBC reporter John Bennett dubbing him a “world-class” player after an impressive display for the Bees against Chelsea.

Therefore, Newcastle supporters will now be excited by the thought of the club signing Eriksen and will be hoping that their team can win the race for his signature.

Tottenham: Reporter makes major Lo Celso exit claim

Journalist Xavi Jorquera Márquez of Cadena SER has made a major Tottenham Hotspur exit claim involving midfielder Giovani Lo Celso as Villarreal eye a permanent deal.

The Lowdown: Emery eyes permanent deal…

The Argentina international was a revelation for Villarreal and manager Unai Emery after joining them on a temporary spell in January for the second half of 2021/2022, prompting their interest in snapping up Lo Celso permanently.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Fabrizio Romano backs that the La Liga side wish to seal a deal for Lo Celso who appears to no longer be in manager Antonio Conte’s plans, coming as he eyes a major overhaul at N17.

The Premier League side, as per a major update from Márquez, have agreed a deal ‘in principle’ to sell Lo Celso.

The Latest: Marquez makes major claim…

According to the reporter, taking to Twitter, the permanent deal ‘will close’ for around €15-18 million (£13m-£15m) plus bonuses.

What’s more, Villarreal have apparently decided on the date of his signing announcement – if all ‘goes well’.

Marquez explained:

“The last fringes of the signing of Lo Celso for Villarreal are closing,

“In principle, the deal will close at 15-18 million (approx) plus bonus.

“Tottenham initially asked for 24, Villarreal has already decided on the date of the announcement, if all goes well.

The Verdict: Big claim…

Fabio Paratici, tasked with backing Conte in the market, will also have to find a way to balance Tottenham’s books with outgoings – even despite their major £15om equity increase.

News of Lo Celso’s close departure will go some way to doing this, but the disappointment for supporters will be losing the South American for such a meagre fee – especially given Spurs have allegedly handed a Villarreal a big discount.

Tottenham: Report makes shock Lewandowski transfer claim

A shock Tottenham Hotspur transfer update has now come to light involving Bayern Munich striker and big name Robert Lewandowski.

The Lowdown: Conte sets sights on summer…

Spurs head coach Antonio Conte, finishing the 2021/2022 Premier League season in style, guided his side to fourth-place and qualification for next season’s Champions League in a huge boost for the north Londoners.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

A resounding 5-0 win away to Norwich City sealed the Lilywhites’ spot in Europe’s most prestigious competition, coming courtesy of goals from Dejan Kulusevski (2), Son Heung-min (2) and Harry Kane.

All eyes will now be on how chairman Daniel Levy backs Conte in the summer market ahead of the Italian’s first full season in charge as the former Inter Milan boss eyes ‘at least’ six major incomings, according to reports.

The signing of a forward is reportedly among the Tottenham manager’s priorities for the next transfer window with a surprise claim now emerging involving Bundesliga superstar Lewandowski.

The Latest: Tottenham eye shock Lewandowski move…

According to French news outlet Foot Mercato, transfer chief Fabio Paratici has joined the mix for Bayern’s household name with Spurs now eyeing a move alongside their rivals Arsenal.

It is claimed that they wish to partner Lewandowski with Kane and are ‘interested in the idea’ of offering the Poland international a route out of Bayern.

The Verdict: Ambitious?

The 33-year-old is quite simply one of the best strikers in world football, as evident by his ridiculous haul of 35 goals and three assists across 34 German top flight starts over 2021/2022 (WhoScored).

His 13 goals and three assists in Europe further back just how relentless Lewandowski can be in the forward positions, with Football Analyst Statman Dave, as seen on Sky Sports, calling him ‘unplayable’.

Former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has called the attacker a ‘huge player’ in the past also, but given he is widely believed to be eyeing a move to Barcelona, it appears Paratici could face an uphill battle to bring him to N17.

Sky Sports drop big Aston Villa transfer news

Aston Villa have completed a ‘very big’ deal for 22-year-old midfielder Boubacar Kamara as Sky Sports presenter Tom White was left gushing over the player on live TV on Monday morning.

The lowdown

Kamara had reached the end of his contract at Marseilles, and so he’ll be moving to Villa on a free transfer.

The move kicks off Steven Gerrard’s first summer transfer window at the club following his arrival back in November.

Villa wound up finishing 14th in the Premier League table after failing to win any of their last four matches, but Gerrard wants to build a squad that can compete for Europe.

Kamara is capable of operating as both a defensive midfielder and a centre-back.

The latest

Live on Sky Sports News on Monday morning, journalist White excitedly shared the announcement coming out of Villa Park.

He said that Villa had won a hotly-contested race for the youngster and seemed extremely impressed by the signing.

“We’ve got big breaking transfers news here,” he said. “Aston Villa have just announced that they’ve signed Boubacar Kamara on a five-year contract.

“He’s out of contract at the end of this season. He’s been playing really, really well for Marseille.

“Aston Villa will have fought off a lot of clubs to sign this player but they’ve got him.

“This is a very, very big signing for Aston Villa.”

The verdict

There were indeed other Premier League clubs linked with Kamara.

French outlet Foot Mercato reported that both Newcastle United and Manchester United were keen, as well as a top La Liga club in Atletico Madrid.

Two of those clubs – Atletico and Man. United – can offer European football next season, while Newcastle are extremely ambitious themselves.

But perhaps the draw of working with Steven Gerrard has proven to be key for Villa.

Gerrard is an all-time great, having been inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame and been named in UEFA’s Ultimate Team of the Year.

Manchester United willing to spend big on Darwin Nunez

Manchester United are reportedly willing to spend €80m on Benfica forward Darwin Nunez this summer.

The Lowdown: Nunez links

The Red Devils have been heavily linked with a move for the 22-year-old over recent weeks. Recent reports have suggested that United are one of the sides ‘best positioned’ to sign the Uruguay international over the summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-news-2/” title=”Latest Man Utd news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Described as a ‘rough diamond’ by BT Sport pundit Steve McManaman, Nunez has also been linked with Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, while in the Premier League Newcastle United have reportedly been eyeing a mega money move.

The Latest: Glazers willing to spend €80m

Sports Witness relayed an update from RCM Sport regarding Nunez on Thursday.

They claim that United are ready to spend €80m (£67.8m) on Nunez, however, the player is unsure over a move to Old Trafford as he wants to play Champions League football.

The Verdict: Ten Hag to persuade Nunez?

Erik ten Hag reportedly made an ‘express request’ to United chiefs regarding Nunez last month, so perhaps he can try and persuade the forward to move to Manchester.

Yes, there wouldn’t be any Champions League football to start with, however, Nunez could play a key role under Ten Hag in an Old Trafford rebuild and eventually fix that issue himself.

Cristiano Ronaldo could be the only senior attacker left, should Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford leave, meaning Nunez could form a partnership with the 37-year-old and go on to succeed Ronaldo as the main man in Manchester when he calls time on his glittering career.

Newcastle to announce USA friendlies

Luke Edwards has now revealed some exciting plans for Newcastle United in the summer.

The Lowdown: Pre-season in USA

The St James’ Park club are set to go to the USA for pre-season, a few weeks after their 2021/22 Premier League campaign ends away to Burnley on Sunday afternoon.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-6/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They are not the only club in the top flight set to go to Stateside, with Arsenal set to play both Chelsea and Everton across the Atlantic.

The Latest: Edwards update

Taking to Twitter, Daily Telegraph journalist Edwards has revealed that Newcastle are due to announce a pre-season training camp in the USA in July and will play some friendlies in Cincinnati.

He tweeted: “#nufc are due to announce a pre-season training camp in the USA in July, with friendly games; in Cincinnati. Expect things to be confirmed this week.”

He added that he has had it confirmed from Stateside, but not from the Tyneside club itself, stating: “I’ve had this confirmed from the USA. Nothing yet from #nufc other than they are going to States this summer for pre-season.”

The Verdict: Exciting

It is always exciting to hear where your club is going to go for pre-season, and it will be good for the Magpies to train in the United States, with the view of potentially playing some of the best teams from the MLS.

The climate should also be nice and warm for them to relax after confirming their place in the Premier League for another season, and the players should enjoy themselves as they prepare for what looks to be a busy 2022/23 campaign ahead.

The new owners will no doubt want to stamp their authority on the market, so some big names could well come through the doors at the Toon.

Newcastle plotting Fabian Ruiz swoop

A big update has emerged on Newcastle United’s pursuit of Fabian Ruiz ahead of the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

According to Spanish outlet AS, via Sport Witness, the Magpies are to be handed the opportunity to sign the Napoli midfielder as Barcelona are struggling to stump up the €40m (£34m) required to prise him away from Italy.

The report claims that Eddie Howe tried to bring him to St James’ Park in January, only to be told that he wanted to wait until the end of the season to consider his future. Ruiz is now poised to depart the Serie A club, and Newcastle are now eyeing a bid for his services after their failure in the previous transfer window.

Imagine him & Bruno Guimaraes

PIF must ensure that they are able to get this deal over the line ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, as Ruiz would be a sublime addition to the squad to partner with Guimaraes.

He is a consistent, quality midfield player who is heading into the prime years of his career at the age of 26. Newcastle will therefore be getting a gem who can come in and make an instant impact, instead of a prospect who may take a year or two to settle in.

Ruiz has been in superb form for Napoli in Serie A this season as he has proven his ability to produce quality displays on a regular basis. He has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.21 across 31 outings for the Azzurri, scoring seven goals and providing four assists.

Journalist Josh Bunting showered him with praise earlier this year, tweeting: “Fabián Ruiz is a beautiful footballer, he scored the only goal in Napoli’s win over Torino. His pass selection is so good, dictates the play, so smart and intelligent on the ball and off it, so good at popping into space and rotating the ball around, keeps them ticking.”

These quotes illustrate the type of midfielder he is and why he would complement Guimaraes in the middle of the park. Whilst Ruiz has the technical ability to dominate matches in possession, the Brazilian is a combative enforcer with three tackles and interceptions per game in the Premier League.

The January signing from Lyon also has quality on the ball, with four goals and one assist in nine Newcastle starts, but his defensive awareness would allow him to cover for Ruiz when the Spaniard wants to advance forward. Therefore, they could be an exciting midfield pairing for Howe, as they are both impressive in their own right and have the potential to work well together.

Sunderland player ratings vs Morecambe

Sunderland ensured themselves of a play-off spot in League One after beating Morecambe 1-0 on Saturday.

Everton loanee Nathan Broadhead opened the scoring within the first 10 minutes before unfortunately having to come off injured, and the nerves started to kick in as Alex Neil’s team managed just seven shots on goal and only edged possession against a team near the bottom of the table.

As such, The Transfer Tavern have now used statistical experts SofaScore to analyse who the three worst performers were (to have played at least 45 minutes) for the Stadium of Light faithful on the day:

Jack Clarke (6.5)

Clarke replaced scorer Broadhead in the 26th minute but was unable to make anywhere near the same impact, ending the game with a 6.5 overall rating,

The forward lost nine of his 12 duels, gave away possession 10 times and, appallingly for a player in his position, failed to even record a shot against Morecambe in more than an hour on the pitch. Also, just one of his three dribble attempts was successful.

Ross Stewart (6.3)

It was not Stewart’s day either, as the striker was given just a 6.3 rating.

Taken off for Jay Matete midway through the second half, the 25-year-old Scotsman lost a team-high 12 duels and also failed to record a shot on target, successful dribble or key pass. In addition, he lost the ball 19 times, the third-most of any Sunderland player.

Patrick Roberts (6.2)

With a 6.2 rating, Roberts ranked as the Black Cats’ worst player on Saturday.

The winger lost 10 duels, missed one big chance, failed with four of his dribble attempts and made no key passes, giving the ball away a mammoth 20 times.

James anonymous again in Leeds cameo

It was another anonymous outing for £30m club-record signing Daniel James as Leeds United were thrashed by Premier League leaders Manchester City at Elland Road on Saturday evening.

The Yorkshire giants weren’t expected to pick up any sort of result against Pep Guardiola’s men but the 4-0 defeat only adds to their relegation worries with the side now sitting in the final safety spot, five points clear of Everton, who face Chelsea later today.

It could go down to the wire and Jesse Marsch will need his top stars to step up and be counted, especially those that have cost the club a hefty amount, such as the Wales international.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title=”Read the latest Leeds United news and rumours!”]

Initially named on the bench for this encounter, the 24-year-old winger was called upon just before halftime as he replaced the injured Stuart Dallas.

The American head coach clearly felt as if the former Manchester United man could swing the game in their favour somewhat, having only been one-nil down at the break.

However, the rampant visitors came out all guns blazing in the second half and it left James something of a ghost-like figure throughout the 45 or so minutes he was on the pitch.

As per SofaScore, he registered only 13 touches of the ball – one every 3.5 minutes. That was even fewer than goalkeeper Illan Meslier (35), who managed to see the ball once every 2.5 minutes at least.

Even fellow substitute Joe Gelhardt managed more touches (14) in only 28 minutes and he was left playing a lone striker’s role, a rather damning indictment on James’ impact or lack of.

With such little involvement, the struggling Welsh dynamo was only able to muster up four accurate passes from seven attempts (57%), whilst he did miss one big chance with his only shot on target.

On that evidence, the £45m-rated star badly failed Marsch in his attempts to try and salvage something for the Yorkshire side up against the defending champions.

He’s now failed to score since early February with only two assists across his last ten appearances in the Whites’ strip.

It’s got to be massively concerning for the Leeds boss at this point.
