Shades of Gazza: Rangers battling to land "dynamic" £3.5k-p/w star

Glasgow Rangers secured a top-eight finish in the Europa League group stage, which ensures they qualify for the last-16 without having to play two playoff ties.

It was a good performance by Philippe Clement’s men, with Cyriel Dessers and Vaclav Cerny impressing notably at Ibrox on Thursday evening during the 2-1 win over USG.

Thoughts will now turn to the weekend as Ross County travel to Glasgow for the Premiership clash between the two clubs. While Clement will be aiming for three points, one eye will be on signing another player or two before the window closes on Monday.

Kieran Dowell and Rabbi Matondo have both departed on loan moves, freeing up some space in the first-team squad for a new signing. Plenty of names have been linked in the previous few weeks, but the Belgian will only bring someone in if they can make a valuable contribution.

The latest transfer news has seen the Light Blues linked with someone who they wanted to bring to Glasgow last summer, but no move materialised.

Will it be a case of second-time lucky?

Rangers transfer news

As reported by DaveOCKOP, Rangers are showing interest in Bobby Clark, who currently plays for Red Bull Salzburg in Austria.

The youngster made the move to the continent from Liverpool last summer for a fee in the region of £6m, yet it hasn’t quite worked out as expected, especially following the arrival of new coach Thomas Letsch.

Any move would be a temporary one, with Clark joining the Light Blues for the rest of the season, but the club have competition. indeed, Swansea City, Derby County and Hull City are all keen on the 19-year-old, but it remains to be seen whether Salzburg will sanction a loan move.

While developing a player for another club isn’t exactly what Clement will be looking for, it is clear Clark could add some dynamism to the midfield.

Bobby Clark for Liverpool.

He has even been compared to a former Gers midfield icon, who shone for the club during a three-year spell in the 1990s – Paul Gascoigne.

Why Bobby Clark could have shades of Paul Gascoigne

The former Liverpool youngster – who reportedly earns £3.5k-per-week in Austria – started his career in the northeast with Newcastle United, similar to Gascoigne.

Transfer Focus

Gazza entered senior football by making his mark at the Magpies, before moving to Tottenham Hotspur, where his career took off.

The former England international arguably enjoyed his most consistent spell at Ibrox, however, helping the Gers win two domestic titles, while also securing a Scottish Cup and League Cup winners’ medals.

Overall, he scored 39 goals in 101 appearances, leaving his mark on the Scottish game with his superb displays.

As for Clark, Newcastle reporter Lee Ryder lavished praise on him when discussing the youngster in the past, tipping him to follow in the footsteps of the great ‘Gazza’:

Not even out of his teens yet, Clark has the potential to carve out an excellent career in senior football. Will a move to Ibrox give him the best platform to shine on, however?

Bobby Clark’s career statistics

The teenager was dubbed as “dynamic” by journalist Mark Guidi last summer and his underwhelming spell in Austria shouldn’t deter from just how good he can become.

The Englishman made his debut for Liverpool during the 2022/23 campaign, with Jürgen Klopp easing him into senior football, clearly not wanting to place too much pressure on someone who could go far if managed correctly.

More game time came last term. Indeed, Clark made 12 appearances across all competitions for the Anfield side, scoring once and registering two assists.

It was in the Europa League that Clark showcased his talent. Across two matches in the competition, not only did he create one big chance and average one key pass per game, but the midfielder also succeeded with 100% of his dribbles while managing to register a shot on target each match.

These performances proved that he could sparkle on the big stage, indicating that he might have a positive future in Merseyside. Klopp departed following the end of the season, which saw Arne Slot take charge. Clark, therefore, wanted to have a fresh start and thus joined Salzburg, who were managed by former Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders.

Bobby Clark for Liverpool

Throughout 2024/25, Clark has made 20 appearances for the Austrian side, registering three goal contributions in the process.

He has started only 11 of these fixtures, however, yet the youngster has still shown plenty of potential.

When compared to his positional peers across Europe’s big five leagues and the Champions League over the previous 365 days, Clark currently ranks in the top 8% for touches in the opposition penalty area (3.03), the top 16% for assists (0.18) and in the top 6% for progressive passes received (5.17).

Solid numbers, especially considering it looked like he was struggling to make his mark for the club. Perhaps a fresh start could benefit him.

Clement has Mohamed Diomande, Nicolas Raskin and Connor Barron as options in the heart of the midfield. Add in young talent Bailey Rice, and it is certainly a position where the manager has plenty of depth.

Clark would be a risk-free signing, that’s a certainty, but would he get in ahead of some of the names mentioned?

That remains to be seen, yet bringing him to Ibrox could give the team that added boost of having another player ready to make an impression in the starting XI over the final months of the season.

Brighton now gifted opportunity to sign "incredible" Premier League winner

Having already welcomed Diego Gomez this month, Brighton & Hove Albion have now reportedly been offered the chance to sign a Premier League-winning defender for Fabian Hurzeler.

Brighton transfer news

The Seagulls rarely get things wrong in the transfer market and will hope that Gomez continues a trend of successful signing, having welcomed the midfielder from Inter Miami at the beginning of the month. Still just 21 years old, the former MLS man is likely to replace Julio Enciso for at least the rest of the current campaign with the midfielder set to join Ipswich Town on loan.

Gomez could yet be just the start of Brighton’s business this month too, as those at The Amex look to give Hurzeler’s side every chance possible of qualifying for European football this season, which the arrival of a Premier League winner would certainly do.

According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Brighton have now been offered the chance to sign Eric Garcia from Barcelona this month as the La Liga giants look to offload players in search of much-needed profit.

Garcia is, of course, a name that Premier League fans should be familiar with given that he came through the ranks at Manchester City before winning the league title with Pep Guardiola’s side during the 2020/21 campaign.

Barcelona's Jules Kounde andEricGarciacelebrate after the match

Now, almost four years on from swapping The Etihad for Barcelona, the defender could be on his way back to the Premier League after starting just four La Liga games all season under Hansi Flick.

Brighton, meanwhile, could take full advantage to welcome an experienced defender who knows all about European football these days.

Brighton should take "incredible" Garcia chance

It speaks volumes about just how Brighton have come that they’re among the clubs reportedly offered the chance to sign Garcia this month, and they should take that chance with both hands. The Barcelona defender is still just 24 years old and already a Premier League winner. The experience and potential that he would bring to The Amex is undeniable.

Guardiola rarely shied away from praising the Spaniard during his time at Manchester City either, previously telling reporters as relayed by Bleacher Report: “He was incredible. He has a lot, a lot, of personality. In the pre-season, in the United States, he was incredible. He commanded all the [defensive] line. He played against Liverpool and Bayern Munich, he was incredible. He had a tough injury and for two months he could not play with us.”

Despite scoring a key goal for Barcelona in their stunning 5-4 victory over Benfica in the Champions League earlier this week, Garcia remains an out-of-favour defender and one who would benefit from a return to the Premier League. Whether Brighton take their chance to secure his signature remains to be seen.

Man City weighing up free move to sign "strong" midfielder Guardiola loves

In the middle of a season to forget, Manchester City are reportedly weighing up a free deal to sign a much-needed reinforcement who Pep Guardiola has been full of praise for in the past.

Man City transfer news

Whether it’s Valencia’s Pepelu or Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes, it’s clear that Manchester City must welcome midfield reinforcements in the January transfer window and during the summer. For the first time since Guardiola’s first season – in which he dropped the likes of Joe Hart – Manchester City are in need of a rebuild if they want to regain a dominant foothold on English football.

Man City preparing move to sign "outstanding" main target to replace Rodri

The Blues desperately need reinforcements…

ByTom Cunningham Dec 14, 2024

Of course, the season-ending injury to Rodri far from helped but a torrid run of form has quickly presented a number of problems that those at the Etihad must solve. That said, replacing Rodri for at least the rest of the season should remain top of their wishlist, especially if it going to be a player of Guimaraes’ calibre.

The Newcastle star remains one of the most talented midfielders in the Premier League and is reportedly willing to leave St James’ Park as early as January to hand City an instant boost. And he may not be the only midfielder to arrive.

According to The Independent’s Miguel Delaney, Manchester City are now weighing up a move to sign Paul Pogba in a free transfer ahead of his return from an 18-month suspension in March. The Frenchman saw his initial four-year ban reduced to just 18 months after a successful appeal and will now be looking to return and make an instant impact to rewrite the narrative.

Paul Pogba at Manchester United.

If he’s looking to steal headlines, then a move to Manchester City would certainly be the way to go too. Having previously been at the centre of criticism during his Manchester United days, Pogba could now get the chance to become the catalyst behind his former rivals’ rebuild to deal the Red Devils the ultimate blow.

Guardiola could finally unlock "strong" Pogba

Unlocking Pogba was, ultimately, a task that Manchester United never quite managed to achieve in what left them with plenty of transfer regret. Whilst France benefitted from the best version of the midfielder as he played a crucial part in their 2018 World Cup win, the Red Devils were stuck trying their best to figure out the impossible combination to enjoy the same benefits.

The code word they were looking for all that time may well turn out to be ‘Guardiola’, however. The Manchester City boss knows exactly how to get the best out of players and the prospect of the Spaniard getting the chance to work with Pogba – even at the latter stages of the Frenchman’s career – should be enough to intrigue those at The Etihad into a potential deal.

The City boss has been full of praise for Pogba in the past, telling reporters as relayed by The Independent during the midfielder’s first Juventus spell all those years ago: “Now, he is a Juventus player. He’s very strong and very young. He’s shown his value, but I know he’s happy at Juve and I wish him a long career. Would I like to coach him? It doesn’t depend on me, but on the club.”

Will Jacks spearheads Surrey recovery with remarkable 150 not out

Will Jacks hit eight sixes in a remarkable 150 not out against Essex to spearhead a stunning Surrey recovery on day two of a so far memorable LV= Insurance County Championship match at the Kia Oval.Jacks, 23, batted with a maturity beyond his years to turn a superb contest on its head as Division One leaders Surrey – 112 for 7 at one stage – reached 319 all out in reply to Essex’s first innings 271.In six overs’ batting before the close, Essex then lost Alastair Cook and Sam Cook, both for 4, while staggering to 19 for 2 – a deficit still of 29 runs. Dan Worrall, fresh from his first innings 6 for 56, had former England opener Cook caught at the wicket from a ball angled across him and nightwatchman Cook well held at second slip.Jacks’ spectacular late onslaught will be long remembered at the Oval and included leg spinner Matt Critchley being plundered for 26 in an over and off spinner Simon Harmer 23 more from another. Jacks, having got to three figures, scored his third fifty from just 17 balls with six sixes and three fours.Coming in at 88 for 4, he took 105 balls for his half-century and 167 balls to reach his third first-class hundred, but this was clearly the best and most eye-catching innings of his burgeoning career. In all Jacks batted for more than four hours, facing 184 balls and hitting 10 fours besides those eight sixes. But Surrey’s dramatic rally, and Jacks’ tour de force, also owed much to the resilience of the tail, with Tom Lawes, Kemar Roach and last man Worrall featuring in stands of 55, 85 and 67 for the eighth, ninth and tenth wickets.Roach, in particular, batted with the assurance of a top-order player for his 29 from 92 balls, also negotiating the second new ball with aplomb until he was bowled by a lovely looping off break from Harmer as he pushed defensively forward.Fast-medium bowler Shane Snater was the pick of Essex’s bowlers with 3 for 35 from 21 overs. He even had figures of 3 for 8 from his first 12 overs, with seven maidens in his first eight overs, and the Essex attack initially combined superbly to put the squeeze on Surrey. But that was before Jacks, aided by his tailend partners, first guided Surrey towards parity with measured batting and then, once Roach was dismissed, accelerated to go first from 84 to 96 with two legside sixes in three balls off Harmer. Then came six more sixes, three each off Harmer and Critchley from a collection of slog-sweeps, pulls and effortlessly struck shots down the ground that fully showcased Jacks’ power. It was all so different from the day’s earlier events. Resuming on 24 for 1, Surrey first lost their captain Rory Burns for 24 in the second full over of the morning, leg before trying to whip to mid wicket a ball from Cook, who was bowling around the wicket to the left-hander.Hashim Amla, beaten twice by Snater but having batted carefully to reach 12, then mishit a pull at Jamie Porter’s medium pace and saw Nick Browne hang on to a diving catch at mid wicket at the second attempt.Ollie Pope, who hooked Cook for six but was dropped at second slip off Porter on 23, had only gone on to 26 when he lobbed a checked drive at Snater to mid off, where Tom Westley dived forward to take the catch. And, after lunch, Surrey’s top order continued to find ways to get out against Essex’s disciplined bowling when Ben Foakes (11) limply cut the first ball he faced after the interval, a short one from Snater, straight to cover point. That left Surrey 95 for 5, and it soon got worse for the home side as Cameron Steel, his feet anchored to the crease, was beaten and bowled off stump for 5 by a fine ball from Snater. Then, aiming an expansive smear through extra cover, Jamie Overton – also on 5 – was undone by a cleverly-flighted off break from Harmer which turned through the gaping gate to hit his stumps.Jacks, in what proved to be the day’s pivotal moment, had already been dropped low down by Alastair Cook at first slip on 9 off the metronomic Snater, but was clearly determined to make the most of his escape and not give his wicket away and, first with Lawes, he began to rebuild the innings from the depths of 112 for 7.Lawes, the 19-year-old all-rounder, impressed with fours on driven off Sam Cook, cut fine off Critchley and slog-swept off Harmer, but after reaching 19, he was distraught to loft a drive at Critchley straight to extra cover. Roach, however, dug in alongside Jacks and a wonderful day’s cricket, eventually, belonged to Surrey.

Chelsea must sell £40m flop who was dubbed one of Europe’s "most exciting"

Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took over at Chelsea, their transfer strategy has been heavily scrutinised in the media. However, in recent months, many have begun to change their tune, with things starting to gel for the Blues, the young investments beginning to fully show their quality, and the wage bill in a much healthier place.

One window that can still be heavily criticised though, is the first window under the new ownership, before any sporting directors were hired, and before the new recruitment strategy was in place. This saw Chelsea spend €300.75m (£249.2m) on eight permanent signings, all of whom joined on high wages.

Of these signings, Marc Cucurella is probably the one resounding success, with Wesley Fofana having immense ability, but being hampered by injuries, which makes his fee and wages look suspect in comparison to others in the squad.

However, one other player still at the club from this window, who hasn’t been given the opportunities required for him to show his true talent, could leave the club in January, and it may be the time for Chelsea to cash in, and part ways.

The Chelsea star who needs to be sold

Chelsea made the signing of Carney Chukwuemeka from Aston Villa during the 2022/23 summer transfer window, joining for a fee of around £20m. The excitement around the youngster was high at the time, with Boehly even stating:

However, the 21-year-old has struggled for consistent minutes since joining, suffering from multiple injury setbacks, and now finds himself out of favour under new manager, Enzo Maresca.

Chukwuemeka has made 32 appearances for the Blues since joining, scoring two goals, providing one assist, and totalling just 746 minutes.

It is now being reported by Ben Jacobs that Chukwuemeka will be available for a January exit, but the club will not consider a cut-price sale. A permanent transfer will reportedly cost interested parties the £40m release clause in the midfielder’s contract.

Chukwuemeka vs Dewsbury-Hall comparison

One man who many believe was an unnecessary summer signing in the 2024/25 window, who has taken the rotation minutes in Chukwuemeka’s position, is Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who signed from Leicester for a fee of around £30m.

Since his arrival, Dewsbury-Hall has made 15 appearances for the Blues in all competitions, scoring two goals, providing one assist and totalling 857 minutes played. Chukwuemeka, on the other hand, has only managed five appearances this season, totalling 130 minutes played.

In the 2023/24 season, Chukwuemeka found himself getting these rotation minutes when he was fit, even starting multiple games at the start of the season under Mauricio Pochettino.

This showed the ability of Chukwuemeka, offering output with goals and assists, being combative, winning his duels (tackles + interceptions), and helping to progress play with his ability to carry and pass the ball.

Dewsbury-Hall’s metrics are slightly inflated, due to the majority of his minutes coming in the UEFA Conference League this season, against inferior opposition, allowing some of his metrics to appear extremely high, such as shot-creating actions (5.76) and progressive passes (8.31).

The key difference in the players is their wages relative to their role in the squad, with Chukwuemeka earning £100k-per-week, whilst Dewsbury-Hall earns just £80k-per-week, and doesn’t have the same track record with injuries as Chukwuemeka.

It’s for these reasons that Chelsea must move the young midfielder on.

Leeds star is finally showing why Bielsa thought he was so "special"

Leeds United have invested brilliantly in recent years, signing players for competitive fees and either making a fortune or setting themselves up for a huge windfall down the line.

Ao Tanaka is just one example within the current first team at Elland Road, taking the Championship by storm with his performances in recent weeks.

The Japanese international has taken advantage of the injury situation at the heart of the side, starting 14 games in a row – now looking like a player worth well more than the £3.5m paid for his services in the summer.

He’s played a crucial role in their recent success, operating as a ball-winning player who can start transitions, which was demonstrated by the third goal in the recent clash with Middlesbrough.

Tanaka is evidence that you can sign a talent on a budget, not necessarily having to spend the big bucks to land players who can make a positive impact on the club.

Speaking of which, those big-money buys haven’t always been the best of investments at Elland Road…

Leeds’ most expensive signings in their history

In January 2023, Leeds broke their club record by forking out £35.5m for the services of Frenchman Georginio Rutter, with the hope of the attacker transforming their attack in the second half of the campaign.

He was unable to make a huge impact in the Premier League, failing to score and registering just one assist in his 11 appearances during the second half of the 2022/23 season.

Georginio Rutter

However, it would be his form last year that caught the eye, scoring six and registering 15 assists, leading the Whites to the play-off final before joining Brighton for £40m in the summer.

Brendan Aaronson is another forward who cost Leeds a huge sum, joining for £24.7m from RB Salzburg in the summer of 2022 – but like Rutter, failing to make a real impact in England’s top-flight.

He only produced four goal contributions, before leaving on loan last season, before returning to play a leading role in the current promotion push under Daniel Farke.

However, one other big-money addition has been superb in the Championship of late, playing a huge role in the club’s recent success at Elland Road.

The Leeds star who’s now coming good under Farke

Winger Daniel James was a player who was on the radar of Leeds for many years, involved in an infamous deal that saw him think he completed a deal, only for it to fall through at the eleventh hour.

Daniel James could stay at Elland Road.

However, the Whites finally got their man in the summer of 2021 under former boss Marcelo Bielsa, costing a mammoth £30m from Manchester United.

The Welshman was dubbed “special” by the Argentine after arriving in Yorkshire, but would only score four times during his debut year with his new side.

Leeds’ relegation to the Championship a couple of years ago has given the 27-year-old a fresh opportunity to kickstart his career, taking his chance with both hands under Farke’s guidance.

James, who’s been dubbed “incredible” by journalist Harri Burton, registered 13 goals in England’s second tier last campaign, but it wasn’t enough to secure an immediate return to the Premier League.

He’s since demonstrated his quality once again this time around, producing four goals and two assists to date, including an incredible strike in the recent game against Middlesbrough.

If the Whites are to end their wait for top-flight football come the end of May, there’s no denying that James will have a huge role to play in any potential success.

His pace and direct dribbling are a problem for any opposition defender, constantly creating chances in the final third for himself and his Leeds teammates.

He’s already proven in recent months he’s a consistent performer at this level, starting to look like the ‘special’ player they forked out £30m for a number of years ago.

It’s one of the Premier League’s greatest mysteries and one that will likely remain unsolved,so much so that Pep Guardiola’s side must be dreading every meeting with the Lilywhites.

With that said, we’ve taken a look back on 10 times that Spurs shocked Manchester City.

1 Man City 0-1 Tottenham, May 2010 Crouch snatches CL football for visitors

Before Manchester City found themselves dominating under Pep Guardiola, they were at the very start of their project in 2008 and seeking Champions League qualification. In a sign of things to come, however, it was Spurs and Harry Redknapp who denied Roberto Mancini’s side, much to the shock of the rich new owners of the Citizens.

Hero of the hour Peter Crouch bundled home in dramatic fashion to see the north London side leap ahead of their opponents in pursuit of a place among Europe’s elite, as Spurs proved that money didn’t equal instant success in the Premier League.

2 Tottenham 3-1 Man City, April 2013 Spurs dent City's title hopes

Just three years later, City were firmly in the title picture and their project was flying under Mancini. Yet, the same constant remained. When it mattered most, they still couldn’t find a way past Spurs, who this time came from behind to shock the champions.

Of course, that comeback victory proved to be all-important, too, given that it was Manchester United who picked up the Premier League title that year in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season.

Samir Nasri initially got his side off to the perfect start before Spurs hit back through Clint Dempsey and Jermain Defoe to turn the game on its head. Adding the gloss on an impressive victory, Gareth Bale returned from injury with a bang by audaciously dinking a third past a beaten City side.

3 Tottenham 4-1 Man City, September 2015 Pochettino's men sweep City aside

A year before the arrival of Pep Guardiola, it was Manuel Pellegrini in charge at Manchester City, who also fell victim to Spurs during his tenure. This time, the Lilywhites didn’t just edge past the Manchester side, either – they sent them packing in style.

Kevin De Bruyne ensured that the Citizens were off to a good start once again, but it was to no avail. Eric Dier struck just moments before half-time and the momentum shifted from there.

Just five minutes after the break, it was the turn of Toby Alderweireld to take the advantage for his side before Harry Kane and Erik Lamela left their own marks on the Citizens.

It was a sign of things to come for Spurs that season, who challenged shock champions Leicester City in their most impressive campaign under Mauricio Pochettino.

4 Man City 1-2 Tottenham, February 2016 Spurs complete shock double

In the middle of a title charge against Leicester, a trip to the Etihad was the ultimate test for Pochettino’s side. They passed with flying colours as Christian Eriksen’s late winner ensured that they completed a shock double over Manchester City.

This time, it was Spurs who opened the scoring through Harry Kane’s penalty in the 53rd minute, before Kelechi Iheanacho levelled things up with just 16 minutes remaining.

Just when the Lilywhites may have been left to settle for a point, Eriksen struck to seal the three points in the 83rd minute. Spurs had once again shocked Pellegrini and City.

5 Tottenham 2-0 Man City, October 2016 Spurs deal Guardiola first defeat

When Pep Guardiola arrived, many may have believed that would be the end of Tottenham’s joy over Manchester City, but they couldn’t have been more wrong. In fact, it’s quite fitting that it was the Lilywhites who handed the Spaniard his first defeat in charge of the Manchester club.

Once again, White Hart Lane was a fortress. Guardiola and his side arrived on a run of six straight victories and ready to end any misfortune that they had been facing in north London. Spurs, meanwhile, were simply ready to cause another shock and welcome Guardiola to the Premier League once and for all.

Defeating Guardiola’s side 2-0, Spurs got off to the perfect start when Aleksandar Kolarov’s own goal opened the scoring inside 10 minutes, before Dele Alli put his side in a commanding lead to seal all three points before half-time.

6 Man City 4-3 Tottenham, April 2019 Spurs survive to send City packing in Champions League quarters

Back when away goals were a thing, the Champions League was full of some historic drama, and Guardiola’s Manchester City side felt the full impact of that in 2019.

It simply had to be Spurs who stood in their way as Manchester City went in pursuit of their first-ever Champions League trophy.

Perhaps the cruellest game on this list, Son Heung-min’s brace and goals from Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva – including four goals in the first 11 minutes – left the game level at 3-3 before the referee could even blow for half-time.

The greatest drama came after the break when Fernando Llorente’s controversial 73rd-minute goal handed Spurs the advantage on away goals to cancel out Sergio Aguero’s earlier strike. Set up for one last moment of madness, Raheem Sterling thought he’d won it at the death before VAR intervened to leave Guardiola on his hands and knees in pure disbelief – and Spurs through to the last four.

7 Tottenham 2-0 Man City, February 2020 Mourinho shocks Guardiola's champions

In a season that saw Guardiola’s side fall apart and Liverpool dominate on their way to their first-ever Premier League title before the pandemic stole the headlines, Jose Mourinho got one over on his old foe.

It turned out to be one of Mourinho’s most memorable games in charge and one of Steven Bergwijn’s best games in a Spurs shirt, albeit his first. The debutant came from the bench to help his side complete the smash-and-grab win after Oleksandr Zinchenko was given his marching orders.

Superbly volleying home to announce himself just after the hour mark, Bergwijn’s debut delight was followed by Son’s effort to seal another victory over Guardiola.

8 Tottenham 1-0 Man City, August 2021 New manager, same Spurs

Perhaps selling many a dream, Nuno Espirito Santo became the latest manager to defeat Manchester City in what was beginning to feel like a north London tradition. On his debut of all games, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss overcame Guardiola’s side without an exit-linked Harry Kane in controversial fashion courtesy of Son’s statement-making strike.

Of course, Espirito Santo didn’t start as he meant to go on, as his spell in charge ended in a case of what might have been rather than one full of the expected success after a debut to remember.

9 Man City 2-3 Tottenham, February 2022 Kane seals late, late show

Just when Riyad Mahrez believed that he’d rescued a vital stoppage-time point, Spurs left Guardiola in shock once again. The Lilywhites looked down, out and ready to settle for a point. But Kane wasn’t. The star striker led by example to find a dramatic winner in what was virtually the last kick of the game just three minutes after Mahrez’s equaliser.

It remains one of the most dramatic moments on this list. Even as Manchester City still went on to win the Premier League title that year, Spurs had another moment to remember against the Citizens.

10 Tottenham 2-1 Man City, October 2024 Spurs begin City's losing run

Fast-forwarding to the latest moment to savour for Spurs against Manchester City, the Lilywhites kickstarted the champions’ four-game losing run in all competitions by sending them packing in the Carabao Cup.

History suggests that goals from Timo Werner and Pape Matar Sarr won’t be the only goals that Ange Postecoglou’s side manage against those at the Etihad this season. Even after suffering defeats against Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town in their last five games, defeating Manchester City twice would be fairly fitting in what can and will forever be the history of Tottenham Hotspur.
