England docked two WTC points for maintaining slow over rate at Trent Bridge

England have been docked two World Test Championship (WTC) points and their players have been fined 40% of their match fee for maintaining a slow over rate in their epic win in the second Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge. This adds up to a total of 10 docked points for the side in this WTC cycle; they had lost eight points during the second Ashes Test in Brisbane last year.Related

The hosts were ruled to be two overs short, after allowances were taken into consideration, by the on-field umpires Michael Gough and Paul Reiffel, third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Martin Saggers. Captain Ben Stokes pleaded guilty to the offence, with match referee Richie Richardson imposing the sanction without the need for a formal hearing.England’s WTC points tally had risen to 42 after their win, before coming back down to 40. Importantly, their points percentage – the key criteria in determining where teams sit on the WTC table – fell from 25 to 23.80, putting them at eighth spot on the WTC table – behind New Zealand.England had scripted a stunning victory at Trent Bridge, with Jonny Bairstow and Stokes putting on a dominating 179-run stand to help chase down 299 on the last day, having been reduced to 93 for 4 at one point. Bairstow blazed his way to 136 off 92 balls, his 77-ball hundred falling just one ball shy of England’s 120-year-old record for their fastest Test century. Following Bairstow’s dismissal, Stokes and Ben Foakes guided England home, the highest successful Test chase at Trent Bridge. Stokes remained unbeaten at the close with 75 off 70 balls. In accordance with the ICC’s rules relating to over-rate offences, players are fined 20% of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time. As per the WTC playing conditions, a side is penalised one point for each over short.

Chelsea women's player ratings vs Man City: Sonia Bompastor’s side go top of WSL thanks to Maika Hamano masterclass as Mayra Ramirez's stunning start to the season continues

The Blues are searching for a sixth successive league title and their chances of lifting it were boosted on Saturday by a huge win at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea made a serious statement in the Women's Super League title race on Saturday as they beat Manchester City 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to snatch top spot. It was a cagey affair from which a winner was extremely tough to call for the most part – until two goals in four second half minutes allowed the Blues to secure a huge victory in their bid to claim a sixth successive league title, and a first under new head coach Sonia Bompastor.

Until that deadlock was broken, it was Chelsea who enjoyed the better of the play in the capital, but City who were on the receiving end of the bigger chances. Those were thanks to errors from the Blues and they were presented to the visitors' most dangerous player, too, but Khadija Shaw, last season's Golden Boot winner, was surprisingly wasteful to leave the game incredibly even as the latter stages approached.

It was as the final 15 minutes began that Chelsea then grabbed this match with both hands. Maika Hamano released Mayra Ramirez who, after brushing off Alanna Kennedy with ease, finished brilliantly to break the deadlock, and then Lucy Bronze's intelligent pass to Guro Reiten became a deserved assist when the winger curled her shot around Alex Greenwood and into the bottom corner. It means these two title rivals swap positions in the WSL table and Chelsea, who still have a game in hand, hold a two-point lead over the Cityzens. However, with it only mid-November, there's plenty of football to be played before the destination of this trophy is decided.

Hannah Hampton (6/10):

Guilty of some inaccurate distribution but kept City out.

Lucy Bronze (7/10):

An asset for her team both defensively and going forward. Great assist for Reiten.

Millie Bright (6/10):

A little too loose in possession but ultimately helped her team keep a vital clean sheet.

Nathalie Bjorn (5/10):

Struggled to contain Shaw at times and walked a thin line on a booking.

Sandy Baltimore (7/10):

This was her toughest test this season in an unnatural position and though she made some mistakes, she also did some great defending.

Sjoeke Nusken (7/10):

Covered plenty of ground and helped restrict City in their build-up play.

Erin Cuthbert (7/10):

Aggressive and front-footed to win the ball back plenty.

Maika Hamano (8/10):

Always looked the most likely to create something and it was indeed her who set Ramirez through to score.

Johanna Rytting Kaneryd (6/10):

Energetic and direct to always cause City problems, albeit without a standout end product.

Mayra Ramirez (8/10):

Things didn't always come off for her but she kept City on their toes with her positivity and got the goal her efforts deserved.

Guro Reiten (7/10):

Struggled to get involved for large spells but took her big chance when it came.

Sonia Bompastor (7/10):

Chelsea haven't been great in the latter stages of games this season but that trend was reversed completely on the biggest occasion on Saturday, which will surely please Bompastor. The coach freshened things up from midweek Champions League action and, with minimal substitutions, trusted her XI to get the job done.

'Those 40-50 minutes…' – Ajinkya Rahane focused on getting the twilight game right

Unlike with the red ball, the pace of pink ball goes up when the lights come on, says the India vice-captain

Sidharth Monga15-Dec-20202:00

Rahane: ‘Batting in twilight period will be challenging’

India captain Virat Kohli has often spoken about not losing focus and having that one awful session that loses you a Test. He didn’t mean sessions where the opposition had kept you under pressure for long periods and then reaped the rewards. He meant when India had largely been in control of the game and then given it all up in one quick burst. The two clearest examples were Durban 2013-14 and Brisbane 2014-15. On both occasions, India had won the toss and looked in control in the first innings. In Durban, they went from 198 for 1 to 199 for 4 – and then eventually bowled out for 334 to lose the Test – against reverse swing. In Brisbane, they scored 400-plus in the first innings, got off to a good start in the second, looked set to save the Test, and then an injury in the nets kickstarted a collapse on the fourth morning to lose them the Test.Since then, India haven’t really had such standout poor sessions out of nowhere, but the many variables in a day-night Test bring about the possibility of one. Vice-captain – and captain-elect for the last three Tests – Ajinkya Rahane has called for increased focus all the time during the day-night Test because it can be like playing two entirely different innings. If the set batsmen lose their way in the twilight period, it can be extremely difficult for the new batsmen to start an innings, which is a recipe for collapses.Related

Fact or myth: Does twilight really make a difference in day-night Tests?

Gill as opener, Pant as keeper – Gavaskar, Border give their views on India's XI

Gill: India have 'plenty of moves' for Australia's chin music

India have played only one day-night Test so far, in India with the SG ball. Rahane did speak, though, from experience of the one first-class game he took part in as build-up to the Adelaide Test. He made an interesting observation that the pace of the ball increases once the lights come on.”The pace of the red ball stays the same throughout the day,” Rahane said. “With the pink ball, the pace changes completely in those 40-50 minutes. Of course, the new ball moves a little for a while but it gets easy to bat after that. Then the twilight period can be challenging because the pace of the ball increases. Both off the wicket and in the air. If we focus hard during this period, it can get slightly easy again.”It behaves differently during the day and behaves differently once the lights are on. So that is a challenge. So as a batsman focus will be the key. As long as you can focus and concentrate, communication will be the key among the two batsmen. Batting in twilight, those 40-50 minutes is the key. If you bat well in that period, it becomes really good.”As David Warner has shown in day-night Tests in Australia, there are periods of cashing in but you have to earn them. Rahane, who likes to start rapidly before settling into an innings, knows that and knows he will have to be more flexible given the time of the day he walks in.”I feel when you bat at No. 5-6, you have to read the situation and play according to the situation,” he said. “For me it is all about playing with intent, playing what the situation is and what the team demands from me. I visualise that and play accordingly. It is all about having that intent. Intent means not going there and playing all the shots. Intent comes with your defence, your leaving the ball. That positive mindset I feel is really important. It’s not like I decide every time to go out there and play my shots but I think having that intent helps me a lot.”

David Warner carefully bats for Joe Burns in opening debate

While backing his current partner, Warner also said he would have full faith in Will Pucovski

Daniel Brettig23-Nov-20201:08

Don’t need to break something that’s working – Warner

David Warner has depicted Joe Burns as his most effective opening partner since Chris Rogers, while conceding that the Australian selectors will ultimately have the final say over whether he is partnered by the Queensland batsman or the rising star of Victoria’s Will Pucovski. The selection chairman Trevor Hohns made an extraordinary admission when announcing the Test squad, stating that Warner would be given a say in the choice of the opening combination after he and Burns provided a strong platform for the Test team last summer, following plenty of top-order misadventures during the 2019 Ashes series.Hohns’ words in turn made Warner’s still more significant than usual, and while he couched his views with the usual caveats about the selectors, he left little doubt that he felt Burns was good value for his spot, particularly in terms of how the pair have complemented each other as players in a way he had not experienced since Rogers retired in 2015. Warner and Rogers opened together in 41 innings between 2013 and 2015, averaging 51.32 with nine century stands; Warner and Burns average 50.55 from 27 stands including six century partnerships.ALSO READ: Chappell – This Australia-India series might hinge on who makes the better selection decisions”I know you guys would like an answer. For me to be honest I’ve had over a dozen opening partners and it’s never been quite stable. I think they gave me the opportunity to ask me who I feel comfortable with, and when I was batting with Rogers we had a great partnership and…we bonded really well together out in the middle,” Warner said. “I think with me and Joe, we’ve done that over the past few years.”I’ve known Joe for a long time, we’ve played out in the middle together, we know each other’s game very well, but it’s upon the selectors to pick the right person to fit that position. If they go the way of Will, he’s batting fantastic, he’s been in and out of the Test squad and he removed himself with some sad times with his mental stuff. So for him he’s in the right frame of mind at the moment, it probably is an opportunity for him to come into the team.”But as we know it’s harder to get out of this team than get in, so whoever they go with, I’ll be well and truly happy with, as long as the person who comes in does their job. At the moment I didn’t think Joe did anything wrong last summer, we put on some great partnerships, averaged over 60 and that’s what you want from your opening partnership. It’s upon the selectors to pick their team and I’ve got to be happy with that and embrace it.”Joe Burns and David Warner run between the wickets•Getty ImagesReflecting on how he and Burns had gelled, Warner said that their ability to start with a long partnership together in the first Test of the summer against Pakistan in Brisbane, after Warner’s personal hell during the 2019 Ashes, had further reinforced what was already a strong relationship.”I haven’t spoken to Cracker [Hohns] yet, no, if they come to me and ask me, I’ll speak honestly,” Warner said. “But with me and Joe we’re good friends off the field as well, so having that support when you’re out there, I know last year we were both quite nervous when we were going into that first Test and then for him coming back into that team, not getting the opportunity in England, there’s a few nerves that float around.”But we obviously know how to get off strike with each other, but that’s just normally what you do anyway as a cricketer – if Will’s there he’s not going to do anything different. So it’s about building that bond and relationship and we’re the two that go out there together all the time when we face up, so you’ve got to have that bond and partnership.”Asked about criticism of Hohns’ suggestion he would be consulting Warner from the former Test captains Ricky Ponting and Mark Taylor, the opener said that his views were formed soundly on the basis of recent performance from the duo, even if Warner has been able to put far more individual runs on the board than Burns.”They’re two guys who have captained their country. I’m sure they would have had a say in their teams as well. But obviously they were captains,” Warner said. “As I see it, I don’t think it’s just like the selectors are going to come and ask me. It’s just more of a preference in the sense of the amount of time I’ve spent with Joe Burns in the middle.”Obviously we won a lot of games last year, so for me, you don’t really break something that is working, which is obviously the opposite to when things aren’t going your way and you’ve got to try and find solutions to problems. That’s the only thing I can sort of back that answer up with. As you say, when you get into the Australian team, you have to put numbers on the board and Will is an exceptional talent and a great player and he’s in the right mind-frame at the moment.”This next sort of A game is going to be the tell-all. It could well be the bat-off for that position. It’s going to be interesting to see but the selectors will pick the team.”Warner also reflected on how, at the age of 34, his game had evolved into a lower risk – though still free scoring – mode of batting. “I’ve just recently turned 34, so my days are numbered, when you’re in the 30s. There’s obviously a risk element but there’s a cricket smarts element to it as well,” he said. “For myself, it’s about getting off to a good start and taking calculated risks in that middle-overs period if we’re talking about 50-over games.”I think last year was probably the most disciplined I’ve batted in Test match cricket as well. I faced a lot of balls in the games and gave myself a lot of time. I really took pride in the last 12-24 months, to apply that discipline and you keep learning as you get older.”You don’t always have this game down pat. You’ve always have to keep thinking outside that square and bowlers have different ideas and ways of trying to get you out. You’ve got to be on top of your game to be able to adapt to that.”

Levy pushes to sign prolific striker who’ll cost Tottenham just £26 million

Tottenham are reportedly pushing to sign a prolific striker who'll cost chairman Daniel Levy just £26 million, as manager Ange Postecoglou seeks a replacement for Harry Kane this summer.

Spurs targeting new striker as Postecoglou pleads for change

Postecoglou has publicly admitted to Spurs' need for fresh faces, and the consensus is they're still in the market for more attacking options despite sealing a one-season extension on Timo Werner's loan deal.

Tottenham may table bid for £30 million forward who Ange thinks is perfect

Spurs are expected to make further forward signings after Werner, as backed by very reliable football.london correspondent Alasdair Gold. There are some rumours that former Chelsea starlet Callum Hudson-Odoi is being targeted by Tottenham as one option to add more quality out wide, and it is also believed that a new striker is wanted by Postecoglou ahead of next season.

The Australian, speaking candidly about his Spurs squad, has been adamant that change has to happen this summer – drawing comparisons to Liverpool and Arsenal who've transformed significantly over the last few seasons.

"We need change. Change has to happen," said Postecoglou last month (via the BBC).

"You can't want to alter your course, quite dramatically for this club because we went down a certain direction and now we're pivoting to a whole different direction, and expect the same people are going to be on that.

"It's just not going to happen. We've had two windows and we've had some development of players, for sure, but when I say we've still got a long way to go, that's what I'm talking about.

"It's not for the want of trying. It's just that we're going to play a certain way, we're going to train a certain way, we're going to have a certain mindset and that's not for everyone. And the same way, whether it's Liverpool or Arsenal, if you look at the beginning of their journeys, by the time they win the competition or have success, the team's almost unrecognisable."

Spurs finished fifth and qualified for the Europa League last term, which is good-going considering they had to cope in their first season without club-record goalscorer and former superstar striker Kane.

Son Heung-min led the line as their talisman with 17 goals and 10 assists in all competitions, but reports suggest Postecoglou doesn't want to rely on the South Korean again for his second campaign in charge.

Tottenham pushing to sign Youssef En-Nesyri

Many strikers have been mentioned via the press as potential Spurs targets, like Brentford's Ivan Toney. However, they also have their eyes on cheaper alternatives from abroad.

Sevilla star Youssef En-Nesyri, who chalked up 20 goals in all competitions last season, is said to be attracting their interest. The La Liga frontman apparently commands a price tag of around £26 million, which could be seen as a bargain considering how prolific he's been lately.

Youssef En-Nesyri

Tottenham are pushing to sign En-Nesyri this summer, according to journalist Santi Ortega, who told Radio Sevilla (via Carrusel Deportivo) of the Moroccan's enticing price tag as well.

The 6 foot 2 centre-forward has been a mainstay for his native Morocco as well, scoring 20 goals in 71 caps for the Qatar World Cup semi-finalists.

Unai Emery fires warning to under-fire Erik ten Hag and Man Utd after masterminding Champions League triumph over Harry Kane's Bayern Munich

The result against the Bavarians was a testament to Villa's character, as many doubted whether Emery's men had it in them to compete with the elites of European football. After staging a massive UCL upset, their eyes are now set on achieving a top-four Premier League finish once again, which would guarantee them top-tier continental football for another season.

In contrast, United are heading into the match at Villa Park with a different set of concerns. Following a 3-0 loss to Tottenham and a last-ditch 3-3 draw against Porto in the Europa League, Ten Hag finds himself under mounting pressure to turn things around. The Dutch manager is believed to be on borrowed time at Old Trafford and another defeat will certainly increase scrutiny on his position.

WHAT EMERY SAID

During the pre-match press conference, Emery expressed his respect for United and their manager Erik Ten Hag but made it clear that he is preparing meticulously for the game.

“I have a lot of respect for him. We won the first match when I arrived here and it was fantastic, but after it we’ve lost four matches against them at home and away," said Emery.

“They are a winning team, they have an experienced coach and experienced players. The club is usually a winning club and they still being winners – they won the FA Cup last year against Manchester City.

“They are not getting consistently good results in the Premier League, but playing only one match, they can exploit their capacity and skill with a huge performance."

DID YOU KNOW?

Emery downplayed their chances against United and even insisted that they are not favourites to finish the campaign with a European spot but stressed that they would give their all to be considered as worthy "contenders".

"We are not favourites to be in the top seven, we are not favourites in the Premier League. We want to be contenders in the process we are, getting points. I respect them and I will prepare the match more than how I prepared the match against Bayern Munich," he said.

"We are playing on Sunday against Manchester United and I think it’s a huge match for us after we played Bayern Munich because through the Premier League, we are playing against the best teams in the world.

"Manchester United aren’t in the Champions League now they are playing in the Europa League, but they are a team with quality players and coach, like teams we are facing in the Champions League. On Sunday, we will need the same atmosphere with the supporters in Villa Park as we had on Wednesday. I have no doubt they are going to help and support us on Sunday, transmitting their energy and pushing us to get three points."

Liverpool eye "magnificent" Mac Allister partner who’s "expected to leave"

A new era awaits Liverpool and so does the chance to make some statement signings as a result, which could see the Reds take full advantage to swoop in and secure a Premier League rival who is expected to be on the move this summer.

Liverpool transfer news

Before anything, of course, Liverpool must find their replacement for Jurgen Klopp – something that is not proving to be an easy task. It looked as though Ruben Amorim was going to be the man to step into the dugout at Anfield before recent reports turned that rumour cold as West Ham United jumped in front. It originally looked like it could be Xabi Alonso too, before he announced his commitment to Bayer Leverkusen for at least another season.

Liverpool fixed on hiring Amorim alternative who's "similar to Pep"

This potential Klopp successor now looks to be top of the Anfield shortlist.

ByAngus Sinclair Apr 23, 2024

Now, Michael Edwards and Liverpool have reportedly turned their attention towards Arne Slot, with contact already made and positive talks held with the Feyenoord boss, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Whether it's Slot or another option who emerges in the coming months though, the best gift that Liverpool can give their new manager is a Premier League-proven star, which could see Bruno Guimaraes arrive.

According to Rudy Galetti, Liverpool are eyeing a move to sign Guimaraes, who is "expected to leave" Newcastle United this summer, with Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, Chelsea and Barcelona also interested in the Brazilian.

kalvin-phillips-bruno-guimaraes-newcastle-opinion

It remains to be seen just how much Newcastle will demand for their midfielder – he is thought to have a nine figure release clause – but it's certainly a deal that would step things up even further at the heart of Liverpool's midfield.

"Magnificant" Guimaraes can form unstoppable Mac Allister partnership

The thought of Liverpool signing Guimaraes immediately signals the idea of a midfield partnership between the Brazilian and Alexis Mac Allister in what would be a deadly South American duo at the heart of the Reds' midfield. The latter has enjoyed an excellent debut season at Anfield and would only get better next to a player of Guimaraes' calibre.

Eddie Howe will be keen to keep hold of his star man, there's no doubt about that, having been full of praise for Guimaraes in the early stages of his Newcastle career.

Howe said via Football365: “Yes, they love him and rightly so after today’s performance. He was magnificent in every discipline of the game. I think the biggest compliment I could give him is that on 95 minutes, with tired legs, for sure, for him – he’s getting used to the Premier League – but he’s managed to get himself in the box to score that header.”

Now, it is Liverpool who could benefit from that magnificence if they decide to push on and make their move to sign the Brazilian this summer.

Ellyse Perry re-signs with Sydney Sixers for two more seasons

Ellyse Perry, the premier Australia allrounder, has been re-signed by her WBBL franchise, Sydney Sixers, for a further two seasons. The leading run-scorer in the WBBL, with 2612 runs against her name and 32 wickets to boot, Perry has captained the Sixers since the domestic T20 league’s inaugural edition in 2015-16. Having led them into the final four times, she was also able to lift back-to-back titles in 2016-17 and 2017-18. She also topped the tournament run-chart in two editions on the trot – 2017-18 and 2018-19 – and was named Player of the Tournament in the fourth season for her 777-run tally, the most in a single edition.A New South Wales native, Perry moved to Melbourne at the end of the 2018-19 season with her husband Matt Toomua, a rugby player who had joined the Melbourne Rebels. Since the 2019-20 season, she has played state cricket for Victoria in the WNCL but whether or not she would move back to Sydney to continue her ties with the NSW-based WBBL franchise, remained a question. However, prior to moving to Melbourne, Perry, in August 2018, had said she has “a lot of very strong ties to the Sixers and, particularly, the coach, Ben Sawyer,” but “probably wouldn’t think about it [the future of her association with the side] until I am off [the Sixers] contract”, which ended earlier this year.ALSO READ: Ellyse the Incredible from The Cricket MonthlySpeaking of Perry’s resigning, the Sixers’ general manager Jodie Hawkins said, “Ellyse has been a part of the Sixers from the very beginning. She was our first ever ambassador back in BBL01 and joined us as captain in WBBL01.”She not only plays for the Sixers but is also involved in our program development. We look forward to her not only continuing to play, but also leaving her mark on the Club for years to come.”Sawyer, too, expressed his delight over the club’s retaining arguably the most high-profile player in women’s cricket.”Ellyse has been our captain from the very beginning of this competition and we are extremely happy that she has extended her contract with us for the next 2 seasons,” Sawyer said. “On the field, Ellyse has been amazing for us throughout the history of the WBBL, but she is so much more to our club than just her on field performances.”Ellyse has played an immeasurable role in the structure and philosophy of our club and, along with our other senior players, both Australian and International, has always had our club and it’s long term success at heart.”
