McKenna not messing around: Ipswich confirm deal for another £8m signing

Ipswich Town have now completed a deal for their latest signing after agreeing an £8m fee and a four-year contract, as Sky Sports broke the news on Wednesday morning.

It has been a very hectic transfer window for the Tractor Boys, and it doesn’t appear to be ending anytime soon, as Kieran McKenna looks to make sure he has a squad that is good enough to survive in the Premier League.

It has been a tough start for Ipswich in the top flight as they have faced Liverpool and Manchester City in their opening two games of the season and lost both, but McKenna will hope a few more additions between now and Friday can help the club have a positive campaign, and there were signs in both matches that they can compete at a high level.

Ipswich Town transfer news

Ipswich have added 11 players to their squad already over the course of this summer, but it appears that McKenna is keen for a few more additions, as he will know that the jump in quality from the Championship to the Premier League is big.

Therefore, with just over two days to go until the transfer window shuts, Ipswich are remaining very busy, as the club have their eye on more than one potential arrival. It was reported last week that the Tractor Boys had agreed a deal worth £30 million with Chelsea to sign striker Armando Broja, with the deal being a loan with an obligation to buy should the club remain in the top flight. However, since then, the deal has been put on hold, as there was an issue that came to light when the forward underwent his medical.

Since this news occurred with Broja, it now appears Ipswich have taken their striker search to a new target, as it emerged from reporter Sacha Tavolieri that they are close to signing Burnley striker Lyle Foster. The deal is said to be a loan move with a mandatory buy option worth £25 million. It isn’t completed yet, but both Burnley and Ipswich are in advanced talks as they close in on an agreement.

As well as wanting to add to their forward line, the Suffolk side have also been linked with potentially adding to their midfield, despite the fact the club have already brought Kalvin Phillips in from Manchester City and Jens Cajuste from Napoli.

It was claimed last week that Ipswich are looking at still adding to their midfield and Sheffield United midfielder Ollie Arblaster has emerged on their radar, but also has admirers from other top flight clubs. McKenna and Co. aren't messing around waiting for those deals to go through either, with another deal now confirmed by the club.

Ipswich Town agree £8 million deal for Luton star

Sky Sports News reported on Wednesday that Ipswich Town have agreed a deal worth £8 million with Championship side Luton Town to sign winger Chiedozie Ogbene, who can play on either wing but is at his best on the right flank.

The 27-year-old agreed personal terms with the Tractor Boys on a four-year deal, and an announcement on his signing has now been confirmed. Ogbene had been with the Hatters since July last year, as he joined the club on a free transfer from Rotherham United.

Last season, Ogbene played 36 times for Luton in all competitions; 30 of those games came in the Premier League, with him scoring four goals and grabbing one assist in the process.

The winger earned some plaudits during his time in the top flight, with Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher labelling the Irishman as a “flying machine” after his impressive display in last season’s 4-4 draw with Newcastle United.

Chelsea now eyeing Premier League forward as Osimhen demands £500k-per-week

Still searching for a solution for their goalscoring problem, Chelsea have reportedly turned their focus away from Victor Osimhen amid his eye-watering wage demands and towards a Premier League striker.

Chelsea transfer news

The Blues have once again been one of the busiest clubs in the summer transfer window, welcoming as many as 10 fresh faces. Yet, still, they remain without a clinical out-and-out goalscorer to lead the line for Enzo Maresca. Reports have linked those at Stamford Bridge to the likes of Jhon Duran and Samu Omorodion, who was seemingly close to a move before it suddenly collapsed, but remain without a rival to Nicolas Jackson.

After Felix: Chelsea in the race for the "next Eden Hazard"

Enzo Maresca could add to his ten summer signings before the end of the window…

ByRoss Kilvington Aug 25, 2024

It's still a situation to keep an eye on, however, especially after Napoli reached an agreement to sign Romelu Lukaku on a permanent basis at long last according to Fabrizio Romano to open the door for Osimhen to complete his departure.

That door may not be open for a move to Stamford Bridge, however, despite Lukaku's pending departure. According to The Sun, Osimhen's staggering £500,000-a-week wage demands have forced the Blues to look elsewhere amid reluctance to make the forward their highest-paid player by almost £200,000-a-week.

Searching for cheaper alternatives, those in London are reportedly looking closer to home. According to The Sun, Chelsea are now eyeing a move to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin following Osimhen's demands late on in the the summer transfer window.

The Everton forward knows all about finding the back of the net at his best, but question marks over his injury history would undoubtedly come to the fore if he sealed a move to Chelsea this week.

"Excellent" Calvert-Lewin may not solve Chelsea's problems

If Chelsea were chasing Calvert-Lewin's signature fresh from the 2020/21 campaign, in which he scored 21 goals in all competitions, then they'd be receiving deserved applause for their transfer strategy. The truth is though, Calvert-Lewin is not that same, clinical striker three seasons later amid injury struggles and poor form, with just seven Premier League goals last time out.

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Given their history of underperforming strikers – from Fernando Torres all the way to Alvaro Morata and Lukaku – Chelsea cannot afford to get things wrong once again; they're in no position to take a risk on Calvert-Lewin.

What's more, Everton boss Sean Dyche won't be keen to let the England international leave, even if he is yet to replicate his form of three seasons ago. Dyche was full of praise for Calvert-Lewin after he scored in a shock Merseyside derby victory over Liverpool in the last campaign, telling BBC Sport: "I thought he was excellent. His physical performance was outstanding."

"This season has not been too bad on the injury front. But it shows it does take time mentally and physically to clear your mind of that and start to play freely again."

It remains to be seen if the Red Devils will go after the Portugal international in the January transfer window as they are to figure out the amount they will be able to pay after keeping FFP rules in mind. Also, the management needs to decide whether they will chase a striker and centre-back as a priority before they raid the market for a full-back.

Priority target: Liverpool lining up their answer to Rodri in £101m talent

Michael Edwards is probably draped across an ergonomic chair, feet kicked up, deep in FSG's inner complex, and smiling. It's a winning summer smile, the kind of smile that one would have as they listen to the brewing unease surrounding Liverpool's inactivity in the transfer market thus far, safe in the knowledge that they have all their ducks in a row.

Liverpool, at this point last summer, had combatted the midfield exodus with the exciting signings of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai; there was a growing sense that Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, both sapped of past vigour during the 2022/23 campaign, were headed to the Saudi Pro League – and indeed they were.

Former Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson.

Arne Slot has a bright squad at his disposal and will be expected to fight at the top of the Premier League table and push hard for silverware across the cup fronts, but one or two impactful signings could make a whole lot of difference, and Edwards might just have a cracker in the pipeline.

Liverpool transfer news

According to Portuguese outlet Correio da Manha, Liverpool have made signing Benfica midfielder Joao Neves their 'priority' this summer, though they are aware of his €120m (£101m) release clause.

A host of top European outfits have been tracking the 19-year-old for months and the Eagles don't want to sell. A boost, however, arrives in the news that both Manchester sides have withdrawn themselves from the race.

Why Joao Neves would thrive for Arne Slot

Last summer, after Fabinho and Henderson left, Liverpool signed Wataru Endo from Stuttgart for £16m. It was a surprising signing, borne from missing out on both Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia to Chelsea.

Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo

Liverpool are the ones left tittering though, having defeated Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final and claimed a place in the Champions League whereas the Blues are turned toward the Conference League.

But Endo, 31, is not the long-term solution, nor is he mobile or technically sharp enough to rival the likes of Rodri at the height of the midfield game. Neves, while unrefined, could grow into such a figure.

The Portuguese midfielder has been hailed for his "special" qualities by analyst Ben Mattinson and has already proved himself dynamic and elite in his ball playing, ranking among the top 5% of midfielders in the Primeira Liga last term for pass completion, the top 1% for passes attempted, the top 13% for progressive passes and the top 9% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref.

As you can see, he's got some way to go before reaching Rodri's godly level, but the trappings of something special are certainly distinguishable.

It would be ridiculous to assume that the Benfica starlet would be performing at a level on par with the greatest midfielder of contemporary times, but he actually showcased a skillset of similarly far-reaching ability last year.

With some tinkering here, tweaking there, Neves could grow into one of the very best. He's athletically robust, impressively technical – and intelligent besides.

If Liverpool are serious and genuinely wish to dethrone the likes of Manchester City and Real Madrid next year, claiming the biggest prizes, then paying the big bucks to secure one of the most coveted signatures around is a must.

He’s perfect for Guimaraes: Newcastle set for talks with amazing free agent

No Newcastle United fan could have envisaged the impact midfielder Bruno Guimaraes would have had at St James’ Park upon his £40m move to the club back in January 2022.

It was a move that certainly raised eyebrows given the Magpies’ lowly league standing and absence from European football, but the Brazilian bought into the club’s project with Eddie Howe and Co reaping the rewards over two years later.

Guimaraes has excelled in Tyneside, scoring 17 times in his 107 appearances, playing a crucial role in the middle of the park – helping the Magpies secure a Champions League spot back in 2022/23.

Bruno Guimaraes for Newcastle

He’s also formed an excellent partnership with fellow compatriot Joelinton, with the duo cementing two of the three midfield spots in Howe’s 4-3-3 system.

However, the pair could finally find their permanent partner alongside them, with Newcastle pursuing a move for one talent this summer.

Newcastle interested in 48-cap international

According to Football Italia, Newcastle are set for talks with French star Adrien Rabiot after he turned down a fresh deal with Juventus.

Adrien Rabiot for Juventus

The 29-year-old, who is now a free agent, has also been linked with a move to Liverpool, Manchester United and AC Milan – with Rabiot ready to negotiate a deal in the Premier League to match his wage demands.

The midfielder started all but one game for Didier Deschamps' side at Euro 2024, taking his international cap tally to 48.

Whilst he’s a man in demand this summer, he would be a sensational pick-up for the Magpies, especially on a free, potentially being the perfect player for Guimaraes on Tyneside.

Why Rabiot would be perfect for Guimaraes at Newcastle

Towards the end of the 2023/24 campaign, Brazilian ace Guimaraes operated in a slightly more advanced role, subsequently allowing him to post a tally of seven goals and eight assists – the third-highest tally of goal contributions in the Newcastle squad.

It’s clear he would be better suited in that role with a ball-winning midfielder who’s confident with the ball at his feet, operating in a slightly deeper role behind him.

The “brilliant” Rabiot, as described by Opta Paolo, could well prove to be the missing piece in Howe’s midfield puzzle, producing some excellent stats that could play into the hands of Guimaraes.

In Serie A last season, the Frenchman completed an average of 4.1 progressive passes and 2.4 progressive carries per 90 – demonstrating his ability to play the ball forward and create opportunities.

He also averaged 2.2 shot-creating actions, allowing Guimaraes and the forward line to have more chances in front of goal, and increase the club’s chances of securing a return to European football.

Rabiot has also excelled defensively, winning two tackles per 90 and winning 1.8 aerial duels, with the 29-year-old able to regain possession for Howe’s side and also able to retain the ball once he’s made the vital defensive actions.

Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot.

He’s undoubtedly a man in demand, but given the club’s recent interest, they need to step up their attempts to secure his signature.

With his contract up at Juventus, he would be available for free. This would consequently allow the club to save a huge chunk of their money in their FFP battle but also dramatically improve the playing squad.

Sydney Sixers fined for incorrectly naming Hayley Silver-Holmes in XI

Her return to the 15-player squad had not been approved by the tournament technical committee

The Sydney Sixers have been fined A$25,000, of which $15,000 is suspended for 12 months, after they erroneously named pace bowler Hayley Silver-Holmes in their XI to face the Melbourne Renegades on Saturday, despite her not officially being part of the squad.Having been replaced in the squad due to a foot injury, Silver-Holmes was fit again for the weekend’s matches but her return to the 15-player squad had not been approved by the tournament technical committee. The error was spotted, and self-reported, by the Sixers after the match against the Renegades had started and she was withdrawn from the match without batting.A hearing took play before Cricket Australia’s senior conduct commissioner, Alan Sullivan QC, on Sunday and the breach was termed “serious”. He could have imposed a fine of up to $50,000 plus other sanctions but took into account the fact the Sixers lost the game and that Silver-Holmes had not played any part in the contest”Cricket Australia places a significant emphasis on the integrity of all competitions, including the compliance with its player contracting rules and regulations,” Sean Carroll, CA’s head of integrity and Security, said. “This breach by the Sydney Sixers, while serious in nature, had a reduced impact due to the club’s actions during last night’s game.”As such, we support the findings of Alan Sullivan QC, including the suspension of $15,000 of the $25,000 fine imposed.”Alistair Dobson, CA’s head of Big Bash Leagues, said: “We commend the Sydney Sixers for their swift action and cooperation in addressing this error. In particular, we echo Alan Sullivan QC’s praise for the Sixers’ self-reporting and actions undertaken to minimise the impact of the breach on last night’s match.”The defeat against the Renegades on Saturday left the Sixers with only the slimmest of chances of making the semi-finals and for the second season in a row they missed the knockouts when they couldn’t overturn an almost-impossible net run-rate calculation against the Stars.”We made a regrettable administrative error for which there are understandably stringent rules,” Jodie Hawkins, Sydney Sixers’ general manager, said. “We were given a fair opportunity to present our case in the hearing and accept the findings and sanction. As a club we will learn from this and put processes in place for the future.”

Ten Hag’s own Neymar: Man Utd eyeing swoop for £60m "entertainer"

Manchester United will be hoping that they can use the final game of the 2023/24 season as a platform to spring from ahead of the new campaign.

The club has finally decided who next season’s manager will be; Erik ten Hag will keep his job after plenty of deliberation, with the season review finally coming to an end, which was confirmed by David Ornstein.

Their FA Cup final victory over Mancunian rivals Manchester City was the perfect way for United to end the season. Goals from academy graduate pair Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo were enough to seal United’s 13th FA Cup title. It was no doubt a victory that has given them supreme confidence ahead of next term.

Indeed, United's 2024/25 campaign begins at home on a Friday night, against Fulham. The Red Devils then travel down south to face Brighton, a fixture they won 2-0 on the final day of the Premier League season, before rounding off their August fixtures with a heavyweight clash against Liverpool at Old Trafford.

To help bolster their chances of finishing in the top four next season, United will no doubt have to strengthen their side this summer. They have already been linked to one man who could enhance the quality of their side in attack.

Man Utd target Ligue 1 attacker

The player in question here is Stade Rennais and France under-23 international Desire Doue. The 19-year-old attacker has performed superbly for Rennes last season and is now thought to be of interest to some clubs during the summer transfer window.

At least, that is according to a report from Danny Rust and Dean Jones, football journalists for GiveMeSport. The pair suggest that United 'have been impressed' by what they have seen from the talented Frenchman when scouting him, explaining that they are 'adamant that he fits the profile' of an alternative option to lead the line instead of Rasmus Hojlund.

Rennes midfielder Desire Doue

However, the Red Devils are not the only Premier League side who are looking at signing Doue over the summer. North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are also considering a move, and further down the Thames, Chelsea are also interested in the youngster.

The talented youngster's quoted price of £60m is a potential stumbling block for United. The article suggested that they are 'confident that he will be out of their price range', with manager Ten Hag hoping that resources will be pooled wider to recruit in more areas of the pitch.

Why Doue would be a good signing

Despite being 19 years of age, he featured very regularly for Rennes last season. He played 31 times in Ligue 1, and put up some impressive numbers, scoring four goals and registering five assists. Not only that, Doue played six times in the Europa League and even managed to grab an assist in the Coupe de France, in five appearances.

There are few players as versatile as the £60m-rated ace, who was dubbed a "pleasure to watch" by U23 scout Antonio Mango, in Europe right now, and he played at least one game in six different positions last season. Those appearances mainly came from the left wing, but he played right across the midfield, too.

Stats from Transfermarkt

Football analyst Ben Mattinson paid Doue a complement of the highest order, by saying the youngster is in the “Musiala, Neymar, Ronaldinho mould”, and explaining that he can “run games in style”. His dribbling skills are certainly some of his best attributes, as Mattinson explains, and this is also reflected in his FBRef numbers.

Per 90 minutes, the 19-year-old averages 4.38 progressive carries, 4.20 carries into the final third and 1.55 carries into the penalty box. He is amongst the best at these, with all three ranking him in the top 1%. He is a very direct winger, who does not shy away from driving forward to help his team progress play, as is suggested by the stats.

His take-on numbers are also astounding. Doue has lightning-quick feet, bags of skills and can change direction with ease. The young Frenchman averages 5.84 attempted take-ons per 90, which turns into an average of 3.42 successful take-ons.

He also wins an average of 2.83 fouls per 90, showing just how hard it is to win the ball off him cleanly. Again, all three of these stats rank him in the top 1%. These are the stats of one of the world’s best dribblers.

However, it is not only in his ball carrying in which the Rennes whiz thrives. In fact, the youngster is also a creative machine. On average, the Frenchman plays 6.71 progressive passes per 90, which ranks him in the top 17%.

However, it is close to the penalty area where he really excels; Doue loves to operate in the half-space, especially on the left-hand side. Per 90 minutes, he averages 2.42 passes into the penalty area, which ranks him in the top 2%. It is also worth noting that he plays 1.78 key passes each game, showing just how creative he is. This is something that ranks him in the top 11%.

Mattinson’s comparison to Neymar and Ronaldinho is clear to see when looking at the stats. The Frenchman is so similar in the way he toys with defenders just like the pair of Brazilian legends, with his bag of tricks and complete fearlessness on the ball making him so unpredictable. However, he is not just a dribbler. Like both Neymar and Ronaldinho, he is a player who puts up impressive goals and assists numbers, showing he has an end product.

Mattinson described Doue as “an entertainer”, and it is very clear to see why. He has impressive goal involvement output but is also incredible to watch, and with the game having fewer players who are aesthetically pleasing than in the early 2000s, players like him are even more exciting.

If United do sign the youngster this summer, he is a player who would no doubt get the Old Trafford faithful off their feet. Whilst £60m seems a lot of money, it is an investment for both the present and the future, and with his ability to play in a multitude of positions, they are adding a special gem who could be ten Hag's own Neymar.

Sunderland in talks to sign "incredible" partner for Clarke

Sunderland will know that one of the major issues plaguing their dismal Championship season just gone was their lack of a prolific striker, never being able to quite fill the void left behind by a departing Ross Stewart.

Attempting to replace the deadly Scotsman with a similarly lethal forward was always going to be a tricky task, with the injury-ravaged striker still managing to bag ten goals from 13 Championship matches during his final Black Cats campaign, despite being a regular absentee to the Stadium of Light treatment room.

Former Sunderland striker Ross Stewart.

In contrast, out of all the misfiring attackers Sunderland now have at their disposal, Nazariy Rusyn came out on top with a paltry two strikes this season, to further reinforce the Black Cats' desperate want of a new hero leading the line.

They could well finally get that, if these transfer rumours are correct, with the potential striker signing even coming in on a free transfer after tearing apart youth football with strike after strike.

Sunderland interested in Premier League youngster

Interested in the services of Divin Mubama in past transfer windows, Sunderland could now finally get the ball rolling involving a deal this summer for the explosive 19-year-old according to Football Insider.

The report states that the goal-shy Black Cats have already opened talks on a potential deal with Mubama, with his Hammers contract expiring at the end of June, which has alerted other Championship clubs to his cheap availability.

Divin Mubama

Why Mubama would be a good signing for Sunderland

Sunderland will pray, if a deal can get over the line soon, that the lethal teenager can strike a terrifying partnership up with Clarke if the 15-goal winger sticks it out in Wearside over having his head turned by a major Premier League switch.

Mubama also will know Pierre Ekwah through his youth days at the London Stadium, eager to potentially link back up with a former teammate to start making considerable waves in senior football, after finding his game-time limited back at West Ham in the first-team ranks.

Across his glittering youth career with the Hammers, where he regularly lined up alongside Ekwah before his move to Wearside, Mubama has netted a staggering 58 goals from 91 games to cement a reputation for being a composed and alert finisher.

Mubama's deadliness for the West Ham U18s and U21s even led to the Academy Manager for the Irons Kenny Brown describing him as "incredible", with a hunger brewing inside the 19-year-old now surely to replicate this prolific streak of form consistently in the men's game, hence letting his Hammers contract simply run down.

Mubama's numbers at first-team level, where he's only managed to bag one goal for West Ham, would surely rise with Clarke next to him as a partner putting chances on a plate for him to convert after many a trademark mazey run.

Only picking up four assists last season however, with his electric goalscoring form often stealing the headlines over his ability to tee teammates up, the ex-Tottenham Hotspur's winger creative game could also be enhanced by the 19-year-old coming in and being a new daring option up top.

With Sunderland's preference for youth also meaning Mubama will be given time to settle and flourish, this could be a perfect next step for the 19-year-old, after leaving the comforts of the London Stadium behind him.
