Man Utd suffered a blunder on £250k-p/w "waste" who is worth £48m less

Manchester United have enjoyed a resurgence in form of late, going unbeaten throughout 2024 while winning four of their previous five matches in all competitions.

It hasn’t been an easy ride, but wins are all that matter at this current moment in time, as Erik ten Hag aims to secure a Champions League slot for next season.

What has let the Dutchman down, especially this season, was his relatively poor transfer business conducted during the summer.

Only Rasmus Hojlund has shown any real potential of being a long-term star for the Red Devils and this is something which needs to change ahead of the 2024/25 season.

The problem does not lie with Ten Hag, however, as a succession of post-Ferguson United managers have all had the same problem. Some more so than others.

Louis Van Gaal was perhaps the worst when it came to spending lavish amounts of money on players who either did not improve his squad, or were only at Old Trafford for the inflated wages.

Only one of the Dutchman’s 13 signings for United is still at the club, but it is clear he has failed to live up to the vast potential he displayed when arriving nine years ago.

How much Anthony Martial was worth at AS Monaco

In 2015, Anthony Martial was among one of the most highly rated teenagers on the continent and, according to Football Transfers, his market value was €42.4m (£36m).

He had enjoyed a solid breakthrough campaign with the French side, scoring nine goals and grabbing four assists in Ligue 1, and this sort of form clearly attracted plenty of attention from elsewhere.

serhou-guirassy-anthony-martial-manchester-united-opinion

With Van Gaal enduring a rather lacklustre debut season at Old Trafford, he needed someone to reinvigorate his attack and Martial was looked upon as not only a wonderful talent, but as a player who could star for the club over the coming years.

Just before the transfer deadline, the 19-year-old cost United an initial fee of £36m, potentially rising to £58m and this made him the most expensive teenager in the world.

Judging by his valuation, the Red Devils secured the services of a centre-forward who had the potential to take the Premier League by storm during the 2015/16 campaign.

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial.

Fast-forward nine years, however, and Martial has certainly failed to live up to the initial hype generated by his arrival in England.

Anthony Martial’s market value now

The 19-year-old had the world at his feet, and it looked as though he had settled in just fine when he scored against Liverpool during his debut for the club to secure a 3-1 win at Old Trafford.

His goal was reminiscent of a prime Thierry Henry, starting off on the left wing before using his pace to cut inside and slot a low shot into the back of the net.

Indeed, journalist Philippe Auclair certainly saw the comparisons between the two French players, saying prior to Martial's move to United:

"The one comparison made by everybody in France – and will probably be made by everybody in England over the next few days – is he reminds people of Henry.

"He's not as tall – he's about two inches shorter – but he is lightning quick. He's got good technique, good skills, he's a good finisher, but he is still a raw product. We don't know how far he can go."

Unfortunately, he didn’t go as far as many anticipated, and it still resembles a real shame that he couldn’t kick on from that debut goal and become a sensation for the club.

Indeed, at the time of writing, the 28-year-old is worth just €12.1m (£10m) according to Football Transfers and this represents a decline of £48m from the transfer fee that was paid to sign him in 2015.

Perhaps the pressure to succeed at United was too great, that and a succession of injuries did not help his cause, but why is the player only worth £10m?

Anthony Martial’s value has declined rapidly

The £250k-per-week forward scored a respectable tally of 17 goals during his maiden season in Manchester, yet he struggled to replicate these numbers under José Mourinho.

He only scored eight and 11 times in the following two seasons and while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looked to have revitalised the player – scoring 23 times in all competitions during 2019/20 – injury problems soon began to take their toll.

From the start of the 2020/21 season, Martial has missed a grand total of 62 matches for the Old Trafford side, while scoring just 19 goals during the same period of time.

The striker was even described as a “humongous waste of talent” by former Scottish professional player Craig Burley and there is simply no denying this statement, especially with his statistics from the current season.

Among his teammates, Martial currently ranks in a lowly 13th spot for goals and assists in the top flight (one), while ranking 14th for shots per game (0.5), 19th for successful dribbles per game (0.2) and 15th for key passes per game (0.5), showing his complete lack of influence when he does make an appearance.

The striker is draining Ten Hag’s wage budget every week, and he will surely be allowed to depart United at the end of the season, especially with his contract set to expire.

Allowing a player to depart for nothing having spent nearly £60m on him in transfer fees and likely the same amount on wages – for a paltry return of just 90 goals in 317 matches for the club – is grim business indeed.

Although the move looked interesting back in 2015, it has since turned out to be a huge drain on the club’s finances and Martial has arguably declined as a footballer, rather than continue to get better.

Aged 28, he should be entering into his peak years, but the Frenchman appears perfectly happy to collect his inflated £250k-per-week wage slip and count the money rather than make a contribution on the field.

Ten Hag will be hoping that his summer transfer business can indeed benefit the squad ahead of future seasons and getting rid of Martial could be an ideal way to begin.

West Ham name their price as they ready sale for forgotten Moyes outcast

Although they endured a relatively quiet January transfer window, West Ham United did at least welcome Manchester City's Kalvin Phillips on loan to help fill the boots of Declan Rice. Much of the focus was on winter exits and the controversy surrounding Said Benrahma's departure. And that could be the truth once more this summer, as the Hammers prepare to sell a forgotten man for David Moyes.

West Ham transfer news

Lyon were left furious when West Ham failed to register the Benraham deal on FIFA's Transfer Matching System, originally forcing their move to collapse. The Ligue 1 side said in a statement via Sky Sports: "In the absence of this reciprocal action on the part of the English club and following this incomprehensible behaviour, raising questions, the international transfer certificate could not be requested before closing time.

"Olympique Lyonnais deeply regrets this situation and this decision, demonstrating a profound lack of respect on the part of West Ham towards the institution and the player.

West Ham already have a Phillips replacement who's the next Declan Rice

David Moyes could soon hand this talented teenager a starting berth in his senior squad.

ByAngus Sinclair Feb 9, 2024

The deal has fortunately since gone through and reached completion, however, with the midfielder joining Lyon on loan until the end of the season with an option to buy at that point.

It is a dilemma that the Hammers will want to avoid a repeat of and it looks as though their focus has turned straight back towards further exits in an attempt to do just that. According to Brazilian outlet iG, West Ham are now hoping to sell Luizao after rejecting loan offers for the centre-back from Brazilian sides.

The London club reportedly set a price-tag of €5 (£4m) when AS Monaco made an attempt to secure his signature last month and that looks set to remain the price for their forgotten man.

"Impressive" Luizao needs move

Since arriving in January of 2023, Luizao is yet to make a single appearance for West Ham's first team and doesn't look likely to gain an opportunity any time soon. At 21-years-old, the central defender is in desperate need of consistent minutes, which won't come at the London Stadium. And, given that West Ham have reportedly rejected loan offers for the defender, he must complete a permanent exit in search of game time.

It's surprising that Luizao hasn't been handed a first-team opportunity after he impressed many for the U21s side, including X account West Ham Youth:

Yet, over a year on from his arrival and it looks likely that Luizao's West Ham spell will fall under the category of what might have been. Still only 21, he still has time to potentially find his feet back in South America, before perhaps one day proving the Hammers wrong over their unwillingness to hand him opportunities. Either way, this one was certainly a transfer to forget in last January's transfer window.

England’s predicted XI for Qatar 2022 – Where are they now?

We may have only just about gotten over that penalty miss against France in Qatar, but the world of football waits for no man, and we are now just seven months away from the 2024 edition of the European Championships, which will be hosted in Germany.

With that in mind, we here at Football FanCast have decided to take a look at the XI the Independent thought would win us the World Cup last year.

They may have made these picks a decade ago, and as we all know, prediction is a fool's game, but blimey, some of these picks are, well, let's just say, interesting.

So, let's take a look.

12 Goalkeeper – Jack Butland Rangers – Nine Caps

Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland

Okay, so as predictions go, we reckon this was a pretty smart one, and the Independent certainly weren't the only ones tipping a young Jack Butland to achieve great things for both club and country.

In 2013, the Bristol-born shot-stopper earned himself an exciting move to Stoke City after impressing for Birmingham City in the Championship. However, some dodgy loan spells at Barnsley, Leeds United and Derby County damaged his reputation, and after spending seven injury-ridden years with the Potters, he finally moved to Crystal Palace.

Unfortunately, he fared no better in the capital.

After three years that saw him make just ten Premier League appearances for the Eagles and spend six months on loan at Manchester United, he again moved on to find more playing time.

In June 2023, he joined Scottish giants Rangers, and while the team have struggled somewhat this season, Butland has been one of their stand-out performers and looks to have finally found a massive team in which he can excel.

In terms of his international career, he has earned nine senior England caps, the last of which came in 2018 against Switzerland, and we reckon that'll likely be his final cap for the Three Lions as well.

Not a bad prediction, just one hampered by injuries and what could have been.

11 Left-back – Luke Shaw Manchester United – 31 Caps

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw.

Now, while there are primarily misses on this list, including Luke Shaw, a decade ago is an unequivocal hit.

Not only has the full-back become England's starting left-back, he has also become one of the first names on the team sheet at Manchester United.

Shaw was still playing for Southampton at the time of this prediction and would spend another year down on the south coast, so this really was a great shout.

Shaw picked up his first senior cap for the Three Lions in May 2014 in a friendly against Denmark, and were it not for a litany of injuries in the intervening nine years, he would undoubtedly have many more today.

He might not have helped us win the World Cup last year, but he still could one day, right?

10 Centre-back – Nathaniel Chalobah West Bromwich Albion – One Cap

The first of our two centre-backs now, and while there was certainly some logic to picking Nathaniel Chalobah at the time, given his vast experience in the youth setup, it's still a pretty big miss.

At the time, the young defender was still at Chelsea, but with it almost impossible for him to break through then, he opted to leave in search of regular minutes.

He would go on several loans in the next few years, spending time at Burnley, Reading and even Napoli, before finally leaving on a permanent deal when he joined Watford in 2017.

Four years with the Hornets was followed by two with Fulham before he then signed for his current team, West Bromwich Albion.

He has only made one senior appearance for the Three Lions, and worse still, it was for just a single minute in a 2018 Nations League game against Spain.

9 Centre-back – Phil Jones Without a club – 27 Caps

This, again, wasn't the worst of calls; if anything, Phil Jones would likely have many more senior caps were he not so injury-prone.

His England debut came in a European qualifier against Montenegro in 2011, and in the following seven years, he would pick up 26 more, with his final two coming in the 2018 World Cup.

Jones was playing for Manchester United at the time of the prediction and was still seen as someone with sky-high potential, so we'll let them off with this pick.

8 Right-back – Chris Smalling Roma – 31 Caps

We are onto their last defensive prediction here, and you know what? It's another that doesn't look as bad as it could have in retrospect.

That said, at right-back? Not sure about that.

At the time, Chris Smalling had only been at Manchester United for two seasons, and while he wasn't playing every minute of Premier League action, he certainly looked good.

Ultimately, though, he would never fulfil his potential at Old Trafford, and the last few years of his time there were rather bleak. Had we looked back at this prediction then, we might have been a little harsher.

However, a loan move to Roma in summer 2020 revitalised the former Fulham man, and following a stellar season, he moved there on a permanent deal the following year and has looked class ever since.

His first England cap came in 2011 against Bulgaria, and his last in 2017 against Scotland.

7 Left midfield – Wilfried Zaha Galatasaray – Two Caps

Okay then, here we are, the first objective, undeniable stinker on this list, and it's only made all the funnier by the fact that the player is a regular international now, just for the wrong country.

Is there a way to be more off the mark than that?

Now, to be fair to them, Wilfried Zaha was and is an incredibly talented footballer, and we can't fault the Independent for predicting a bright international future for him at the time, but come on, the fact that they were correct, just for the wrong country is very amusing.

Zaha is currently plying his trade for Turkish giants Galatasaray, and after a slow start, he is tearing it up for them both domestically and in the Champions League.

His only two caps for Three Lions came in 2012 and 2013, totalling a massive 20 minutes of game time – we can see why he chose the Ivory Coast, to be fair.

6 Central midfielder – Jack Wilshere Retired – 34 Caps

jack-wilshere-arsenal-academy-edu-arteta-myles-lewis-skelly-manager

Okay, so we are back to pretty reasonable predictions now. There was a general expectation that Jack Wilshere would be at the heart of England's midfield for the foreseeable future back in 2013, as by that point, he was firmly established as one of Arsenal's best players.

He was a fantastically gifted footballer, but one that was seemingly made of glass.

The tenacious midfielder was blighted with injuries throughout his short career and missed a shocking 315 competitive games between 2009 and 2020, averaging out at around 28 a season, per Transfermarkt.

Jack Wilshere will always be one of the quintessential 'what if' players.

Oh, and he's been retired for over a year, which would make his inclusion in an England team somewhat challenging.

5 Central midfielder – Ross Barkley Luton Town – 33 Caps

Oh dear, we are firmly back in miss territory again with the inclusion of former Everton and Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley.

We have to be somewhat fair and grant that back in 2013, Barkley was looking like one of the best up-and-coming midfielders in the Premier League, but following his move to Chelsea in January 2018, he seemed to regress into half the player he was for the Toffees.

He would make just 100 appearances across all competitions for the Blues in the four-and-a-half years before joining OGC Nice last September. Unfortunately for the 29-year-old, that move also failed, and he joined Luton Town on a one-year deal this summer.

We reckon his most recent cap against Bulgaria in 2019 might be his last.

4 Right midfield – Jordan Ibe Ebbsfleet United FC – Four Caps

The misses keep coming, and this might be the biggest yet, former Liverpool and Bournemouth winger Jordan Ibe.

While we can see where they were coming from for a lot of these picks, we really can't wrap our heads around this one. At the time of publishing their article, Ibe had made just a single senior appearance for the Reds, and while he was highly thought of, there were other more obvious choices.

Since then, Ibe moved to the Cherries for four years before cycling through several clubs, including Derby County, Turkish second division side Adanaspor, and his current side, National League outfit Ebbsfleet United.

We hope he can rediscover his form of old and fight his way back up the pyramid, but another England cap might just be a step too far.

3 Striker – Daniel Sturridge Unattached – 26 Caps

This is another choice we can't really fault them for making at the time, as the 2013/14 season was probably Daniel Sturridge's peak as a player, and to give him credit, it was an impressive one.

In 29 Premier League appearances, he scored 22 goals and provided nine assists as he formed a deadly partnership with Luis Suárez that almost won Liverpool the league.

However, as with Wilshere, injuries got the best of him, and he never reached the same heights again. He was last playing for Australian side Perth Glory but had his contract terminated after six games that brought no goals, again in part due to injury.

His 26th cap, which came against Lithuania in 2017, will likely be his last as he is still without a club.

Farke could land James upgrade in Leeds swoop for "impressive" 5 ft 8 whiz

The January transfer window is just over a week away from opening for business and Leeds United could dip into the market to bolster their playing squad.

Angus Kinnear confirmed, in October, that Daniel Farke will have funds made available for him to add to his group if the German tactician decides that he needs further additions.

The Whites have been linked with an interest in Galatasaray forward Kerem Akturkoglu ahead of next month, as they eye up a possible swoop to improve their attacking options.

A recent report from Turkish outlet Fanatik claimed that Leeds are one of the sides, along with Italian outfit Lazio, who are keen on a deal for the impressive winger.

However, it will be a difficult deal to get over the line as the Super Lig side have decided that they do not want to cash in on him, which means that the Championship team will need to be very persuasive to secure the talented gem's services.

Farke could, though, bring in an upgrade on current Leeds forward Daniel James if he is able to win the race for Akturkoglu's signature in January.

Dan James' season in numbers

The Wales international has enjoyed an impressive start to the Championship campaign and showcased his ability to make an impact at the top end of the pitch on a regular basis.

After a dismal return of two goals and one assist in 24 Premier League matches last term, the former Fulham loanee has caught the eye with his displays this season.

James has contributed with seven goals, four assists, and eight 'big chances' created in 20 second tier appearances for Leeds since his return from his loan at Craven Cottage.

He has also made 1.8 key passes and completed 0.9 dribbles per game down the right flank, with these statistics showcasing his impact in the final third.

The statistics that show why Akturkoglu would be an upgrade on James

However, Farke could bring in a winger who is capable of doing more at the top end of the pitch than James if he can secure Akturkoglu's services.

The 25-year-old whiz, who was hailed as "very impressive" by journalist Samuel Luckhurst after his performance against Manchester United in the Champions League this season, is also a wide player who can produce goals and assists at an exceptional rate.

He has managed four goals, five assists, and 11 'big chances' created in 15 Super Lig appearances for Galatasaray so far this term, to go along with two goals in five Champions League starts.

The Turkey international also racked up nine goals, 11 assists, and 17 'big chances' created in 34 league outings for his club during the 2022/23 campaign.

This means that he has averaged a goal or a 'big chance' created every 1.20 league matches since the start of last term, with 13 goals and 28 'big chances' created in 49 games.

Meanwhile, James has managed one every 1.33 Championship matches this season, which suggests that Akturkoglu would provide more consistent quality as a scorer and creator of goals from a wide position.

The 5 foot 8 magician has also made 2.9 key passes per game in the Super Lig this term, which is 1.1 more per clash than James has managed for Leeds, and this shows that he could improve the creativity within the squad to break down low blocks.

It is now down to Farke and the club to convince Galatasaray to part ways with the impressive whiz to bolster the quality of their wing options.

Serhou Guirassy update shared by Sky Sports in boost for West Ham

One club are preparing for their "on fire" player to leave in January as West Ham United eye a move to sign him, according to Sky Sports.

Steidten's rumoured transfer plans for January

Lead by technical director Tim Steidten, who is now seen as a real first advisor to Hammers co-chairman David Sullivan and the board, West Ham have their eyes on shoring up key areas.

"Leader" in talks to join West Ham as club president shares public defiance

There’s discussions ongoing behind-the-scenes.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 20, 2023

There are reports that West Ham are keen to sign Southampton star Kyle Walker-Peters, with Moyes eager to bring in alternatives to Vladimir Coufal and Emerson Palmieri.

Aaron Cresswell and Ben Johnson's deals also expire next summer, making the need for new full-back options all the more prevalent. Elsewhere, West Ham are rumoured to hold an interest in Kalvin Phillips as well, who is looking pretty likely to leave Man City mid-season after his consistent lack of opportunities.

West Ham United manager David Moyes.

Moyes has actually poured cold water on West Ham's need for a striker recently, but reports are still coming in that they could move to sign one next month.

The Hammers are tipped for a busy January window by reliable media sources like Fabrizio Romano, and they may have been boosted in their rumoured pursuit of Stuttgart star Serhou Guirassy.

Stuttgart prepared to sell Guirassy in January

West Ham have reportedly come knocking for the Guinea international, and he could leave for the bargain price of his £15 million release clause. The 27-year-old has scored 16 goals in just 13 Bundesliga appearances this season, making him both a quality and affordable option for Moyes who can play in attacking midfield as well.

Now, Sky Sports Germany claim that Stuttgart are preparing for Guirassy to leave amid reports West Ham are keen to strike a deal for him.

They're said to be on the look out for replacements already, which is a sure-fire indicator that the African's future is far away from the MHP Arena.

Journalist Dean Jones, commenting on the links to Guirassy recently on GiveMeSport, suggested West Ham have a good chance of signing the player but may need to go all out and offer him an enticing package.

“The race to sign Guirassy is getting quite interesting because half the Premier League are now considering whether they should be signing him in January, but I’m learning that this will probably come down to big pay offers," said the reporter.

“The release clause makes an actual transfer relatively easy to get going, but because of that, the player himself will probably be looking for a handsome package that lands in his account.

“West Ham are definitely on the lookout for a striker, and they would probably have a decent chance of getting him if they are willing to push the boat out and offer him the sort of deal they might not usually put out there for a player of this age that has had this career path.

“But he’s on fire, a European boot contender, and goals are hard to find these days at the top level.”

Sunderland expressing real interest in £550-p/w “magnificent” forward

Sunderland hold a genuine admiration for an up-and-coming forward, but they aren’t the only club who are hoping to bring him to the Championship in January.

Sunderland updates

Tony Mowbray’s side have made an extremely mixed start to the new campaign having won seven, drawn two and lost six of their opening 15 games, meaning that they currently find themselves eighth in the league table.

Rotherham United (2-1)

Coventry City (0-0)

Ipswich Town (2-1)

Southampton (5-0)

Swansea City (0-0)

Preston North End (2-1)

Queens Park Rangers (3-1)

Cardiff City (1-0)

Blackburn Rovers (3-1)

Middlesbrough (4-0)

Sheffield Wednesday (3-0)

Stoke City (2-1)

Watford (2-0)

Leicester City (1-0)

Norwich City (3-1)

The Black Cats will no doubt be confident that they are able to compete from promotion being just two points outside of the play-offs as it stands, but that won’t stop the boss from assessing his options in the market to search for players that he could strengthen his squad with.

Barnsley’s left-winger Fabio Jalo has emerged as a potential target due to his deal being set to expire at the end of the season (Barnsley contracts), meaning that he is likely to be made available for transfer during the upcoming window should he not put pen to paper on fresh terms.

The Portugal youth international was named the Academy Player of the Season at the Oakwell Stadium for the 2021/22 term which shows what a bright future he has ahead of him, and the 17-year-old’s impressive performances have caught the eye at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland showing genuine interest in Fabio Jalo

According to TEAMtalk, Sunderland are keen on a deal for Fabio Jalo, but they aren’t alone in their pursuit of the promising attacker with five other teams additionally looking to reach an agreement.

TEAMtalk can exclusively confirm that Brighton, Everton and Fulham are among several English clubs showing an interest in the highly-rated winger. Our sources suggest that along with the Premier League trio, Leeds United and Sunderland are also amongst the sides showing a real interest.

"Sporting Lisbon back in Jalo’s native Portugal have also been checking on his progress, so a return to his homeland could also potentially be on the cards.”

Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray.

Fabio Jalo's "magnificent" left foot

During the 2021/22 season, when he received his aformentioned individual accolade, Jalo scored a remarkable 27 goals across all competitions (Leeds Live), which shows just how prolific he can be in the final third.

The Tykes’ “magnificent” left-footed forward, as hailed by their academy manager Bobby Hassell, is also a versatile operator with his ability to play as a centre-forward, right-winger and an attacking midfielder alongside his usual role out wide on the left flank (Transfermarkt – Jalo statistics).

Additionally, Jalo only pockets £550-per-week (Barnsley salaries), so he would be more than affordable for chiefs to recruit – that would make him the lowest-earner on their books (Sunderland salaries) – making this a move worth considering in January.

There had been fevered speculation that the Reds would turn to Xabi Alonso, their former midfielder, but the Bayer Leverkusen boss has since confirmed that he will remain at the BayArena. As a result, focus has shifted towards Amorim, with Sporting currently one point clear of Benfica at the top of the Portuguese Liga NOS.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

  • WHAT AMORIM SAID

Amorim told reporters: “Right now, I’m focused on Sporting. I’m very proud to be Sporting’s coach. We’re focused on winning titles. You’ll see in the end. I have a contract and I’m very happy here. That’s the most important thing, more than contracts, I’m very happy here. The focus is on beating Benfica in the Portuguese Cup.”
