Celtic in talks to make £5.8k-p/w ace Rodgers’ first signing of the summer

Celtic are in talks to make their first signing of the summer as the board look to back Brendan Rodgers following his success this season.

Celtic eyeing up Idah

Despite a tough season in places, Celtic still ended it by lifting the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup, a domestic double that looked impossible during parts of the campaign.

And their success has seen the Celtic board decide to back Brendan Rodgers in the transfer market, with the club trying to tie up a permanent deal for Adam Idah after the Norwich City loanee hit nine goals in 18 appearances since arriving in January.

Rodgers himself wasted no time explaining just how important the 23-year-old was, strongly inferring his desire for a permanent deal to be done.

“The board know how I feel on Adam, that was the reason for bringing him in,” Rodgers said. “He’s been a real catalyst for us, especially over the last few months.

“What he’s done since coming in is show that he’s a goalscorer. He gets different types of goals. He has great movement in the box and he deals with pressure moments. Today, he was like a real number nine sniffing in and around the box.

“He’s been absolutely immense for us and he’s clearly someone I’d like to do something with. Hopefully we can do something. He has a long-term contract at Norwich but he is definitely one I would love to bring back here."

There will also be a need for a new no.1 at Celtic Park following Joe Hart's retirement, but before that there is another deal that the Hoops are hoping to get done.

Celtic locked in talks over permanent Bernardo deal

Now, it has been reported that Celtic's chiefs are locked in talks over a permanent move for midfielder Paulo Bernardo, who appeared 19 times over the course of the Scottish Premiership season as part of his loan spell from Benfica.

During that time, he was singled out for praise by midfield partner Callum McGregor, who admitted he'd like him to stay beyond the summer.

"Paulo has been an important player for us. He has big technical quality and he's a young kid who wants to do well. That's the type of profile we want at the club. Hopefully we can bring him back.

"He's a great lad as well. He works ever so hard and he's a part of the group we have. Obviously the club will decide what happens, but that's certainly the profile we want. You want hungry players who are technically good and can come and make an impact as well."

But Celtic are not willing to pay the £6m option to buy the 22-year-old, who still has three years to run on his £5.8k per week deal in Portugal but is not in Roger Schmidt's plans.

As a result, reports claim that the Bhoys are "trying to negotiate" a lower price for the midfielder, who they do want to keep permanently but not at the cost mooted when the loan agreement was struck.

Should Celtic be successful, they will be hoping that Bernardo can kick on in his second spell at the club as they look to defend their hard-won titles in 12 months time.

New target: Rodgers wants to sign £8m Premier League player for Celtic

Brendan Rodgers wants to bring a "fantastic" £8m Premier League player to Celtic this summer, according to a fresh transfer rumour.

Celtic transfer latest

The Hoops sealed yet another Scottish Premiership title last season, holding off Rangers after a tense battle, but this is a period in which the club cannot afford to rest on their laurels. Instead, strong signings need to be made, as they look to prove themselves more on the Champions League stage.

Making some loan deals permanent appears to be one of Celtic's most pressing matters in the coming weeks, as they look to get moves for Paulo Bernardo and Adam Idah over the line. The pair have impressed on loan from Benfica and Norwich City respectively, and Rodgers seemingly views them as important figures heading into the future.

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has been considered a strong option for some time, as he looks to enjoy a fresh challenge away from Anfield, and it looks as though he is still a leading contender to fill the void left by Joe Hart at Parkhead. Club chiefs are thought to be plotting a £10m move for the Republic of Ireland international, in what could be a signing of real intent.

Kelleher isn't the only option between the sticks, however, with Bayern Munich stopper Daniel Peretz seen as an option to bring in on loan. Premier League clubs are also keen on him, while legendary teammate Manuel Neuer recently hailed him after being replaced by him in a pre-organised substitution: "That was agreed upfront. We agreed if the result allows it we’ll do it. Daniel gave the team so much over the entire season. He deserved to get the minutes today. We’re all happy Dani was on the pitch today."

Celtic want "fantastic" £8m player

According to a new report from The Daily Mail, Celtic are interested in signing Bournemouth defender Chris Mepham this summer, with the 26-year-old emerging as a new target.

The Hoops have "added" the Welshman, valued at £8m, to their list of possible transfer options ahead of next season, with Rodgers considering him a good addition.

Leeds United transfer target Chris Mepham in action for Wales.

Mepham could be a really astute signing by Celtic in the summer transfer window, considering how much experience he possesses at the top level, despite still only being 26 years of age. He has racked up 36 caps for Wales, which is an impressive tally, as well as appearing 61 times in the Premier League to date.

He could immediately make the Hoops an even more formidable defensive unit, and the depth that he would add is needed, especially ahead of what is hopefully an improved Champions League campaign.

ByBen Browning Jun 6, 2024

Former manager Scott Parker once described Mepham as "fantastic", clearly valuing him greatly, and he is a player who could come in and be a huge asset for Celtic over a number of years, having averaged three aerial duel wins per game across a total of 10 Premier League appearances in 2023/24.

Wolves one of main candidates for £9m ace with more assists than Ait-Nouri

After an excellent first season under Gary O'Neil, Wolverhampton Wanderers have turned their attention towards rewarding the manager with a possible left-back boost in the transfer window.

Wolves transfer news

For clubs outside of the Premier League's top six, impressive campaigns can come at a price with those at the top of English football and around Europe more likely to circle around their top stars. And that looks set to be the case at Wolves this summer, with Pedro Neto and Matheus Cunha already linked with summer departures to Arsenal and Manchester United respectively.

Wolves star Pedro Neto celebrates

The attacking duo enjoyed standout seasons in the Midlands, earning such links as a result, with Neto battling injuries whilst still maintaining his form when available throughout the season.

Both departures would undoubtedly deal Wolves a frustrating hole and two major gaps to fill, but they're not the only ones linked with a move away. Reports have also cast doubts over Rayan Ait-Nouri's future in the Midlands, with Liverpool mentioned as a potential destination. Suddenly, O'Neil could be looking at losing three of his best players in what would leave his side instantly battling against the odds in the Premier League at the start of next season.

Wolves eyeing £30m signing who’s a dream Adams alternative

This Premier League forward could be the perfect partner for Matheus Cunha.

ByAngus Sinclair Jun 2, 2024

After being pushed aside under Julen Lopetegui, Ait-Nouri found himself restored to the Wolves side by O'Neil this season in what turned out to be a stroke of genius by the former Bournemouth boss. Now, however, if the defender repays that faith by heading for the exit door, those at Molineux may have a potential successor lined up.

According to A Bola, Wolves are one of the main candidates to sign Francisco Moura from Famalicao this summer in a deal that could be worth just €10m (£9m). Moura has impressed in Portugal and could follow a famous trend of Portuguese players finding themselves on their way to the Midlands, following in the footsteps of the likes of Neto and Ruben Neves.

With five assists to his name – three more than Ait-Nouri managed this season – Moura certainly represents a solid option to turn to when looking to ease any potential summer blow.

Wolves wise to target Moura

Still just 24 years old, Moura would represent smart business for Wolves, especially if Ait-Nouri does leave in the coming months. The Famalicao man, at just £9m could quickly turn into a bargain deal if he took his form from Portugal into the Premier League. Replacing Ait-Nouri will be no easy task, however, with the left-back attracting the interest of Liverpool for good reason.

Having bounced back well from losing Neves last summer, Wolves will be hoping to enter the start of next season in similar form no matter who they lose in the coming months. What's more, if links to Moura are anything to go by, the Midlands club could be willing to spend when it comes to replacing any outgoings this summer.

Rangers hit the jackpot with "phenomenal" star who’s worth more than Souttar

Glasgow Rangers have had to rely on their fair share of free transfers to bulk up the squad in recent transfer windows.

Failure to build on the Premiership success of 2020/21 has led to the Light Blues slipping behind Celtic domestically, winning just two cup competitions since.

Qualifying for the Champions League group stages during the 2021/22 campaign could have seen Steven Gerrard enjoy major financial rewards which may have altered the course of the Scottish football hierarchy.

Former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard.

Alas, the Gers failed to reach the land of milk and honey. They did reach the Europa League final in 2022, but the likes of Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Michael Beale splashed money on several expensive flops, leaving Philippe Clement with a mammoth task on his hands this summer.

The club have endured a difficult time in the transfer window since the summer of 2021, yet there have been a few hidden gems that have cost the club nothing in the way of a transfer fee recently.

Rangers' recent free transfer arrivals

Beale spent vast sums of money last summer in order to bring Danilo, Sam Lammers and Cyriel Dessers to Glasgow in the hope that they could fill in the void left by the likes of Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos.

Around £15m was wasted last year, as only Dessers has shown real consistency, scoring 22 goals in all competitions.

Several players will surely have to be moved on by Clement when the summer transfer window opens in order to give him some flexibility in the market to bolster his playing squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

If the buyers aren’t there, however, the Belgian may have to focus the majority of his transfer business on players who won’t command a fee.

Jack Butland

Despite enduring a turbulent ten-month period in charge of the Light Blues, Beale did work his savvy in the market as the likes of Dujon Sterling and Leon Balogun joined the club for free last summer.

His most important decision was to lure Jack Butland north of the border, however, and the Englishman was certainly the signing of the season.

Jack Butland's arrival at Rangers

After yet another poor domestic campaign, Beale was tasked with rebuilding the side ahead of the 2023/24 season in the hope that Rangers could challenge Celtic for the league title.

Beale oversaw a mass exodus of players departing Ibrox, while nine new arrivals joined the Light Blues.

Allan McGregor was one of the first team stars to leave. Across two separate spells for the club, the Scot made close to 500 competitive appearances, yet his final two seasons saw a few mistakes creep into his game, and it was clear retirement was calling.

Jack Butland

Bringing in a ‘keeper who could be relied upon between the posts was crucial for Beale if he wanted to build a solid core to his new-look Rangers, yet a move for Butland was a gamble.

The former Stoke City number one had played only 15 times following the start of the 2021/22 season, with zero appearances coming last term due to a broken finger which kept him out for 16 games.

Following the expiration of his Crystal Palace contract, Beale quickly snapped him up in what was arguably his finest piece of transfer business during his short spell as the manager of the Ibrox side.

While Rangers may have lost the league title to Celtic following a drop-off in form during the run in, they wouldn’t have been in a race if it were not for Butland and his incredible shot-stopping ability.

Jack Butland’s Rangers statistics

Firstly, Butland has played a total of 56 times for the Gers this season, conceding 49 goals while racking up 25 clean sheets in the process.

Narrowing that down to just Premiership matches, the Englishman has played 37 times in the league, keeping 18 clean sheets while conceding 29 goals.

When compared with other ‘keepers in the top flight, Butland has kept the most clean sheets while making the third most runs out throughout the campaign, demonstrating his importance to the Light Blues.

Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland.

Rangers losing the league isn’t down to the goalkeeper, it is down to the defenders in front of Butland failing to cut out sloppy errors in the most important matches.

With Euro 2024 just around the corner, Butland must surely be catching the eye of Gareth Southgate as he aims to secure a seat on the plane to Germany. Clement certainly thinks he is ready, saying this back in February:

"If people are talking about being in the England squad, that says enough – because England will be one of the favourites to win [Euro 2024].

"It is the decision of Mr Southgate. He knows all the other goalkeepers, I don't watch all these games, so I cannot make comparison, but I can say one thing, Jack is totally ready – every game he is proving that."

Jack Butland’s market value at Rangers

Former Rangers midfielder Derek Ferguson hailed the player as “phenomenal” previously and according to Transfermarkt, his current valuation is €3m (£2.5m), which could continue to rise given his impressive displays of late.

This value is currently more than another free transfer who has shone for the Ibrox side this season – John Souttar.

The Scot is currently worth around €2.5m (£2.1m) and given how consistent he has been this season, missing just 16 matches in all competitions, his importance to the squad has certainly increased under Clement.

Rangers chiefs now believe £25k-a-week star will be at Ibrox next season

Huge news for the Gers.

ByTom Cunningham May 10, 2024

Butland’s displays this term could certainly attract attention from the Premier League, as a few clubs could be interested in making a move for the Englishman this summer.

Clement would certainly be able to demand a significant sum of money for the player, but could the Gers replace him ahead of next season?

The 50-year-old coach may face some tough decisions this summer, but if he could add another one or two free transfers into his squad who have some excellent potential to be sold for a profit down the line, they must be secured sooner rather than later.

Shambles: Everton now can’t even extend high-earner’s contract this summer

Everton have been dealt yet another blow in a terrible season, with the Blues believed to be unable to afford a high-earning player's contract this summer.

Everton suffering season continues

The Blues' woeful season hit another low point on Monday evening, with Sean Dyche's side thumped 6-0 away to Chelsea in the Premier League.

It was an alarming performance throughout, with a lack of quality and application on show, and it means they are still far from safe in the relegation battle. Everton are only two points clear of the drop zone with one game in hand, ahead of a huge meeting with struggling Nottingham Forest at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon.

Everton manager Sean Dyche.

Away from the Blues' on-pitch struggles, there is also so much going at the club, whether it be point deductions, issues with the Bramley Moore Dock stadium move or slow progress regarding the takeover at Goodison. Nothing seems to be going right currently, and in fairness to Dyche and his players, it can't be easy for them to keep their focus.

The hope is that Everton avoid relegation and then make new signings this summer – young Club Brugge midfielder Raphael Onyedika has been linked with a move, for example – but there is also the threat that others will leave, from Jarrad Branthwaite to Amadou Onana. Now, a new update suggests that one established Blues man will be on the move come the end of the season.

Everton will let high-earning player leave

According to a new claim from Football Insider, Everton will have to let Idrissa Gueye leave on a free transfer this summer for financial reasons. The Merseysiders are "not likely to activate the one-year extension clause" that exists in his original deal, hoping instead to clear his £80,000-a-week (over £4m a year) off the books.

idrissa-gueye-amadou-onana-everton-dyche-premier-league-afc-bournemouth

This is another sign of Everton's financial woes currently, in terms of not being able to justify Gueye staying on for another year, and seeing him leave this summer will be a shame, especially as they will not receive a transfer fee.

Granted, the midfielder is now 34 years of age, meaning he is both past his peak and not a long-term option, but he has great experience and could have continued to be a solid squad player, having racked up 165 appearances for Everton to date. Meanwhile, Dyche lauded him earlier this season, saying: "I thought Idrissa Gana Gueye was excellent. We only took him off because he’s put so much in recently. He just looked tired."

The fact that the Blues can't justify retaining Gueye's services does speak volumes about the current situation at the club, and it does feel as though they desperately need to battle their way through this Premier League season or face real disaster.

Bad to worse: Everton nailed on to be hit with new punishment after Chelsea

ByHenry Jackson Apr 15, 2024

Hopefully, no further point deductions will come their way and 777 Partners' takeover will eventually go through, but for now, staying up feels more important than anything, given the all-round ramifications of going into the Championship.

Glasner should axe Crystal Palace dud who earns £40kp/w more than Guehi

It hasn't been the greatest of seasons for the Crystal Palace faithful this year, with significant drubbings, injuries, and discontent surrounding the manager being the defining moments of the campaign until now.

The hiring of Oliver Glasner feels like it could be the start of something quite special at Selhurst Park. His track record in Germany and progressive style of play could see the Eagles genuinely move up the table in the coming years.

However, it will probably take a few transfer windows and some serious squad building before the south Londoners see real change, and while players like Marc Guéhi won't be for sale, one of his teammates who earns substantially more than him might.

How much Marc Guéhi earns at Crystal Palace

Palace signed Guéhi from fellow London outfit Chelsea in the summer of 2021 for just £18m after two impressive loan spells with Championship side Swansea City.

Since then, the 23-year-old "rock", as talent scout Jacek Kulig described him, has made 108 appearances for the Eagles, scoring five goals and providing two assists.

The 6 foot titan was an instant hit at Selhurst Park and became the club's youngest captain in a decade when he was handed the armband in February 2022 for a game against Watford at just 21 years old.

Despite his growing importance to the team, emergence as an England international, and consistently impressive performances in the Premier League, Guéhi earns just £50k-per-week, as he is still on the deal he agreed to when first joining the team in July 2021.

If the club want to help Glasner realise his goals of transforming Palace over the next few years, then offering a new contract with improved terms to the young centre-back feels like an inevitability, especially as a few of his less crucial teammates are earning more than him.

How much Odsonne Edouard earns at Crystal Palace

French striker Odsonne Edouard is one of those players who earn substantially more than Guéhi does at Palace, £40k-per-week more to be specific.

Odsonne-Edouard
Odsonne-Edouard

The 6 foot 2 forward has been earning £90k-per-week at Palace since completing his £14m move from Celtic in August 2021, which means he has cost the club a grand total of £25.7m in fees and wages, which represents a serious investment.

Unfortunately, the south Londoners haven't seen a great deal for that investment over the last two and a half years. In his 92 appearances for the club, he has scored just 20 goals and provided only five assists, which is a far cry from his 87 goals and 38 assists in 179 appearances for the Hoops.

There have been the odd moments of brilliance here and there, such as scoring a brace on his debut and against Wolverhampton Wanderers last season, but they have been few and far between and with the club essentially paying £1.28m-per-goal, or £1m-per-goal-involvement it would be hard to call the transfer anything other than a failure.

Moreover, with Glasner clearly favouring Jean-Philippe Mateta as his central number nine at the moment, it looks like Edouard's time in red and blue could be coming to an end.

Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp would find the England job 'boring', warns former Three Lions star as he explains why Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard could be a better fit

Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard have been backed to be popular England boss appointments but Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola would find it "boring".

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Following England's Euros final defeat to Spain, manager Gareth Southgate resigned from his role after nearly eight years in the post. While the Football Association looks for his successor, ex-England man Glen Johnson has backed Gerrard and Lampard to be embraced by fans if they take up the job – despite their underwhelming managerial records. Former Liverpool boss Klopp and Manchester City manager Guardiola have been named as frontrunners for the job, but Johnson feels neither man will want to swap club football for reduced action on the international stage.

    WHAT GLEN JOHNSON SAID

The former Liverpool defender told : “I can’t really see either of them [Guardiola and Klopp] being England manager. Both of them wear their hearts on their sleeves, they’re super passionate and ultimately, I believe both of them may find the job a bit boring to be honest. It’s clear that they both enjoy the day to day work that comes with club management and that’s something they won’t get at international level.

“It would obviously be quite a considerable jump for either of them [Lampard and Gerrard], as they’re early on in their managerial careers, but sometimes you’ve just got to roll the dice. I’m sure the players would love to have either of them managing them and sometimes you’ve just got to take the risk. If Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard was the England manager, then I believe the fans would love to see that.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite leading England to two Euros finals, and a World Cup semi-final, Southgate stepped away from the England job. He was the Three Lions' most successful manager since Sir Alfred Ramsey led the country to the 1966 World Cup triumph and finding someone to replace Southgate and build on his work is a tall order.
