Kohli vs Gambhir: 'If you can give it, you got to take it'

Following a fractious end to Monday night’s IPL game, with Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir having to be separated from each other, the Royal Challengers Bangalore batter addressed the situation in a video published by his team on YouTube.Captured candidly as he was celebrating with the rest of the players, Kohli was seen saying, “That’s a sweet win boys. A sweet win. If you can give it, you got to take it. Otherwise don’t give it.”RCB came from behind to beat Lucknow Super Giants in a low-scoring tussle, which bore striking resemblance to a grudge match. The two teams had already been involved in previous game that also turned out to be an emotional roller-coaster when LSG secured a last-ball, one-wicket victory in Bengaluru.Related

In celebrating that win, Gambhir was seen shushing the Chinnaswamy crowd, a gesture which Kohli reprised at Ekana stadium.Back in the dressing room, and speaking directly to the camera, Kohli added, “It was a really important win for us. The fact that we got more support from the home crowd is an unbelievable feeling. It tells you all about how much we are liked as a team and how people come out and back us. It’s a very sweet win. Feels very good for many reasons but most importantly for the kind of character we showed defending that total [126]. I think everyone had the belief that we could do it and we were on the winning side which is great.”The IPL took note of the altercation and fined both Kohli and Gambhir 100% of their match fees. They were found to be in breach of article 2.21 of the tournament’s code of conduct, which covers all type of conduct that brings the game into disrepute, including unruly public behaviour. While the players were shaking hands after the game, there seemed to be words exchanged between LSG bowler Naveen-ul-Haq and Kohli. Naveen was fined 50% of his match fees.RCB director of operations Mike Hesson admitted that some of the needle stemmed from the two teams’ first meeting at this IPL. “I guess after the last match at the Chinnaswamy, where we lost off the last ball, it always felt like we were really desperate to get this one. So I think you probably saw a little bit of that boil over tonight.”The RCB captain had no problems with the spectacle. “That’s the best version of Virat, isn’t it?” Faf du Plessis said. “To see him pumped up like that. That’s when he’s at his best. It’s really awesome to be a part of it. My job is to keep things calm on the field, which I thought we did really well.”

Andrew Cavenagh: Who is the other half of Paraag Marathe Rangers takeover?

Rangers’ takeover deal has hit a major breakthrough this week, with 49ers Enterprises President Paraag Marathe and former banker Andrew Cavenagh agreeing a deal to acquire at least 51 per cent of the shares at Ibrox.

Rangers make takeover breakthrough

The sacking of Philippe Clement was a big moment in the Gers’ recent history, and amid the Belgian’s struggles as manager, there has also been constant speculation off the pitch over 49ers Enterprises buying the club.

Now, a huge update from Sky Sports has claimed that the takeover of Rangers has been “agreed in principle”, heralding a new era at Ibrox in the process. There is a “growing confidence on all sides that it will be completed ahead of the new season”, which has the potential to create a far better feel-good atmosphere after a damaging defeat to Motherwell at the weekend.

This has been a season to forget so far for the Gers, even though they are still in the Europa League, with some patchy form throughout the campaign allowing Celtic to build a 16-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

The hope is that this takeover can be agreed as soon as possible, giving Barry Ferguson and his players an extra spring in their step, not to mention the fans.

Who is Andrew Cavenagh?

One relatively unknown figure until now who is heavily involved in the takeover is Andrew Cavenegh, with the health insurance magnate “leading” the bid along with the 49ers’ Marathe, who is a more publicised name due to his involvement at Leeds United.

It is thought that Cavenegh’s “involvement at Ibrox could be key in ensuring Scottish FA dual ownership rules are not a barrier”, as Marathe and the 49ers are limited to just a 29.9 per cent stake in the club because of their current involvement at Elland Road.

Cavenagh, a former banker, is the co-founder and former CEO of US based company ParetoHealth, with the report adding that they manage around £5.2bn in assets and “cover more than one million lives” in the States. ParetoHealth provides midsize companies (50–1,000 employees) with affordable healthcare benefits which “traditional insurance has failed” to do.

His role as CEO came to an end last month, seemingly in order to focus on this takeover of Rangers, having congratulated his replacement on taking up the job on LinkedIn: “The thing of which I’m most proud, however, is the team that we have built at Pareto. It is therefore with incredible pride that I share that Maeve O’Meara has been promoted to CEO.”

He revealed he will be stepping down to a lesser role as Executive Chairman from March onwards: “I will be serving as Executive Chairman and will work closely with Maeve on strategy and will stay closely engaged with our community. I am excited to dream big with Maeve and the best is yet to come.”

Educated at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania between 1988 and 1992, Cavenagh has enjoyed executive roles at Berkley Risk and Berkley Accident & Health prior to eventually kick-starting ParetoHealth as CEO in 2019.

The American is a high-powered businessman who has dealt with pressurised situations in banking and insurance throughout his career, meaning Rangers are hopefully in good hands as they look to strike a deal with majority shareholder Dave King and others.

All Gers supporters want is for an end to this saga, allowing the club to kick on to bigger and better things in the coming years, become the powerhouse of Scottish football again.

Is he the right man to succeed Philippe Clement?

1 ByHenry Jackson Mar 2, 2025

While there is clearly a huge amount of work to do in that respect, from bringing in the right long-term manager to providing more funds for new signings, the hope is that the influence of Cavenagh and others will aid Rangers greatly.

Hetmyer dropped from West Indies World Cup squad over missed flight

West Indies have dropped Shimron Hetmyer from their men’s T20 World Cup squad after he missed a “rescheduled” flight to Australia. CWI said the decision had been taken “unanimously” by the selection panel, which also decided to name Shamarh Brooks as Hetmyer’s replacement. The rest of the West Indies squad had flown to Australia in different groups following the conclusion of the CPL on Saturday. When asked about the situation, the white-ball captain Nicholas Pooran said, “To be honest, that’s not my focus at the moment. A decision has been made, there’s consequences for your action. At the moment just want to focus on why we’re here and how we’re going to achieve our goals.”Hetmyer, who was captain of Guyana Amazon Warriors, was originally set to fly out on October 1, but wanted his flight rescheduled due to personal reasons. CWI booked him on a flight that would leave on Monday, only for Hetmyer to later tell Jimmy Adams, CWI’s director of cricket, that he would not be travelling.Related

Tough turnaround for West Indies as Australia look to fine-tune T20 World Cup selection

“The decision by the CWI selection panel was made as Shimron Hetmyer missed his re-scheduled flight to Australia, which had been changed from Saturday 1 October at his request, due to family reasons,” CWI said in a media statement. “With flight availability a real challenge, a seat was found for him to leave Guyana today, Monday 3 October, meaning he would unfortunately miss the 1st T20 International (T20I) against Australia on Wednesday 5 October at the Metricon Stadium. This morning, Mr Hetmyer, informed the Director of Cricket that he would not be able to get to the airport in time for his flight this afternoon to New York.”Adams said that Hetmyer had been informed that “any further delay” in travel would cost him his World Cup spot.”This afternoon we informed the CWI board of directors that the selection panel had unanimously decided to replace Shimron Hetmyer with Shamarh Brooks in our T20 World Cup squad,” Adams said. “Whilst we changed Shimron’s flight from Saturday to Monday due to family reasons, it was made clear to him that if there were any further delays and issues with his travel to Australia then we would have no choice but to replace him in the squad, as we are not prepared to compromise the team’s ability to prepare for this extremely important global event.”Pooran admitted that Hetmyer was a big loss. “Obviously, yeah, we plan with him but unfortunately he’s not here and we have to plan differently now.”Brooks will fly out later this week but will not feature in the two-match T20I series against Australia. He will instead join the World Cup squad directly in Melbourne, where they will start their campaign in the qualifying round. West Indies are placed in Group B, alongside Ireland, Scotland and Zimbabwe with the top two teams progressing to the Super 12s.Brooks and Hetmyer were pitted against each other in CPL playoffs last week. It was Brooks’ unbeaten 109 in Qualifier 2 that helped Jamaica Tallawahs make the final, which they went on to win against Barbados Royals.

Moyes could sign his own Bruno Fernandes at Everton with bid for £10m star

Everton beat Tottenham Hotspur last time out to hand David Moyes his first win since returning to the Goodison Park dugout, 11 years after leaving to take the reins at Manchester United.

Candidly, Spurs were picked apart by an Everton side that revealed a keen edge to their attacking play that hasn’t been on show at all under Sean Dyche.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s name was finally projected on the jumbotron, his expertly-worked goal ending a 16-match barren run. Still, Dom’s out of contract at the end of the season and Everton need a new striker to head the (second) Moyes era.

But the Merseysiders are certainly not limited to that one forward area.

While Everton could do with a lick of paint across a number of areas, the right wing is in desperate need of some fresh life. Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom have both struggled to assert their authority this term, and both are only loanees set to depart at the end of the season.

Iliman Ndiaye is an electric player but he needs wide support on the alternative flank, and the new owners, The Friedkin Group, have an exciting name in mind.

Moyes looking to make forward signing

Earlier this week, Caught Offside revealed that Everton are interested in signing Sporting Lisbon winger Marcus Edwards.

Halfway through the penultimate year of his contract, the 26-year-old is reportedly available for a shrewd €12m (about £10m) fee, making for an eye-catching proposition indeed.

Sporting winger Marcus Edwards.

Moyes has European pedigree and will be confident that he can win the English winger over, bringing him to Merseyside with the promise of an important role in a new project.

What Marcus Edwards would bring to Everton

Edwards is a quick-paced and skillful winger who has notched 50 goal contributions across 124 appearances for his current club, balanced in his clinical and creative output.

The Tottenham academy graduate has played in Portugal since departing north London in 2019, first earning his stripes with Vitória de Guimarães before joining Sporting for about £7m in January 2022.

Moyes will no doubt relish making good use of Edwards’ dynamism, but it’s clear that his best position comes off the right flank. In fact, Edwards has been described as an “electric” outlet on the wing by reporter Jack Collins, showing that he can emulate Ndiaye’s role.

But, in fact, he could prove to be Moyes’ very own version of Manchester United sensation Bruno Fernandes, given that he is an attacking midfielder coming to the Premier League from Sporting – perhaps in January too.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes

United signed the Portugal sensation in January 2020 in a deal worth £68m overall and he has since been the club’s talisman through a turbulent period, swiftly praised as “one of the best” by pundit Owen Hargreaves, who also noted that he had “made everyone better” at the Theatre of Dreams.

While that hasn’t always been the case, you can’t dispute the elite-class ability at the Magnifico’s feet, ranking among the top 2% of positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions and progressive passes and the top 14% for tackles per 90, as per FBref.

He’s more of a playmaker than Edwards, but Moyes’ project could strike a similar chord by bringing the England talent to Goodison for the remainder of the campaign and beyond.

Carlo Ancelotti warned Martin Odegaard 'will have something to prove' after binning midfield upon Real Madrid return as Los Blancos prepare for Arsenal showdown

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has been warned by Emmanuel Petit that Arsenal's Martin Odegaard may 'have something to prove' against Los Blancos.

Odegaard sold by Ancelotti at Real MadridReal Madrid to face Arsenal in CL quarter-finalPetit thinks Odegaard may have something for MadridFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱Getty Images SportWHAT HAPPENED?

Odegaard joined Ancelotti's Madrid in the winter of 2015 from Norwegian side Stromsgodset as a highly-rated 16-year-old attacking midfielder. However, the Norway international was unable to break into Los Blancos' first team and was sent out on multiple loans until 2021. Ancelotti returned to Santiago Bernabeu that year, and in his first function as boss, agreed to the sale of Odegaard to Arsenal.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Odegaard has become one of the best midfielders in the world under Mikel Arteta at Arsenal and has helped the Gunners improve their dwindling fortunes. The north London side are now set to take on Madrid in the Champions League quarter-final, and Petit believes that the Norwegian could have something to prove to Ancelotti.

AFPWHAT PETIT SAID

Speaking to PokerFirma, Petit said: "Martin Odegaard does have too much creative responsibility in the team. At the moment, he is the only guy who can be creative from midfield, he’s alone in that. That has to change.

"One of the reasons why Martin’s game hasn’t been as good as we know it can be is because he’s looking for movement in front of him, and it’s just not coming. He has a telepathic relationship with Saka, and he’s missed him. He needs players around him that can play combination football, one touch, pass and move, and Arsenal haven’t had those players fit for a long time.

"In his last game for Norway, he got a hattrick of assists. He looks like he’s starting to get the juice back, and it’s coming at the right time. He will have been disappointed with how his Real Madrid career came to an end – he will have something to prove to Carlo Ancelotti, the manager that signed him and then sold him. He’s the captain of Arsenal – he’ll want to lead by example, and over the last few weeks he’s been looking a bit more like himself.

"I hear that Saka could be ready for Madrid, which is massive for Arsenal, but also massive for Martin Odegaard two. Those two players bring out the best in each other."

Anuj Dal piles on the pain as frustration mounts for winless Sussex

Century stand with Mark Watt puts Derbyshire in firm control at Hove

Derbyshire’s batsmen ran amok to place their side in total control on the second day of their LV= Insurance County Championship match at Hove. They piled up 551 for eight before declaring and at the close Sussex were 142 for three in reply. The Sussex bowlers toiled on a flat pitch and on a warm day and their worst period was after lunch, by which time Derbyshire were seven wickets down. Sussex did take an eighth wicket. But then Anuj Dal (146 not out) and Mark Watt (55 not out) thumped a century partnership off just 115 balls. Their unbroken stand of 108 in 20 overs is a new ninth wicket record for Derbyshire against Sussex, beating the partnership between Maynard Ashcroft and Joe Humphries at Hove in 1904, a match in which the great CB Fry scored a double century. In their partnership Dal, who scored his second century of the season from 236 deliveries, and Watt appeared to score at will and at one period Sussex captain Tom Haines handed over control of his side to Steve Finn. Haines had left the field for a spell but when he returned he fielded at long-off while Finn talked to the bowlers and set the fields.A Sussex spokesman said: “It was easier for Finn to manage the field while Tom was on and off and preparing to bat.” But there was a sense of frustration among the spectators. “Come on,” one shouted, angrily, after a misfield. Sussex did succeed in changing the ball, but it didn’t make any difference.Sussex are looking for their first championship victory since April 2021. That looks well beyond them already and it didn’t get much better when they batted. Ali Orr was bowled for five by Sam Connors, who then dismissed Haines, driving, for 17. But then Tom Alsop (44) and Mohammad Rizwan (54 not out) added 95 before Alsop fell to a juggling catch at midwicket shortly before the close.Derbyshire had resumed on 339 for five, with Wayne Madsen on 171 and Dal unbeaten on 45. The batsmen had already put on 136 and soon added the three runs needed to make it a sixth wicket record for the county against Sussex.Sussex opened their attack with Sean Hunt and Jack Brooks and, for the first hour at least, bowled with purpose and aggression. Dal edged Hunt between wicketkeeper Oli Carter and first slip Tom Alsop to reach his fifty. But Madsen had added just five runs to his score when he was dismissed by a fine delivery from Brooks. Madsen was surprised by the extra pace and bounce and edged to first slip where Alsop took a good catch high to his left. Madsen had faced 263 deliveries and hit 19 fours and a six.Derbyshire were 390 for seven when Hayden Kerr, making his championship debut for the county, was lbw to Delray Rawlins as he attempted to pull. They reached lunch on 430 for seven, with Dal unbeaten on 89. Sussex took the eighth wicket when Rawlins drifted the ball into Alex Thomson’s pads to have him lbw for 27. But that was about as good as it got for Sussex.

Imagine him & Stansfield: Birmingham could re-sign "special" Anderson rival

Birmingham City will be aiming to keep up their flawless December right until the very close of the busy month, having picked up a stunning five victories from five so far.

Their last win in League One was a comfortable 2-0 victory over Bristol Rovers which even saw opposition manager Matt Taylor lose his job.

Away from that unfortunate manager casualty, Jay Stansfield stood out once more for the promotion chasing Blues in this contest, as the ex-Fulham man scored yet again for Chris Davies’ side.

Standout Birmingham players in attack

Stansfield confidently converting from the penalty spot versus the Gas took his ever-growing goal total in league action to a hefty ten from just 13 clashes, as Birmingham’s insistence on splashing the cash on their former loanee continues to pay off.

Despite the fact the 22-year-old would only muster up 32 touches of the ball from his 78 minutes on the St. Andrew’s turf, he would still manage to register a high eight shots on the Rovers net, with the Birmingham number 28 ultimately thankful for the spot-kick to break his duck on the day.

Whilst the on-fire attacker lapped up more praise, Keshi Anderson also shone for Davies’ side, having found himself in a great vain of form of late as well.

Amassing three goals and three assists in League One to date, the experienced number 14 proved to be tricky for the visitors from Bristol to contain, with five key passes credited to Anderson come the end of the clash.

Davies and Co will be delighted they managed to tie Anderson down on a new deal until 2026 in October, therefore, but he could soon have a rival down the right flank in this potential new buy.

Birmingham could land Anderson rival

As per a recent report from late last week, Birmingham are plotting a sensational loan move for former academy product Nathan Redmond this coming January.

Plagued by injuries all of this season so far, this could also act as a confidence-boosting move for the ageing 31-year-old, who hasn’t been able to be present for one single game for Scott Parker’s Burnley during the 2024/25 campaign so far off the back of his constant presence in the Turf Moor treatment room.

After all, if Davies’ men can get Redmond back to his best away from these unfortunate injury issues piling up, he would be a statement coup for League One and an upgrade on Anderson.

Only a couple of campaigns back, the 5 foot 8 winger would impressively pick up 12 total goal contributions for Beskitas after venturing out to Turkey, having once also been a regular in many a Premier League side past his early footballing education at Birmingham.

Looking at the table above, Redmond would also amass a weighty 90 goal contributions playing for both Norwich and Southampton, with Ralph Hassenhuttl even labelling the tricky attacker as “special” when the pair worked together at St. Mary’s.

Whilst his woes at Burnley will make the Blues feel somewhat cautious about picking back up their ex-star, his ability to also play down the left as well as the right will make him an even more worthwhile asset to have around, with the 31-year-old perhaps linking up with Stansfield to devastating effect if he can find his mojo again.

Davies has managed to get the maximum out of the more seasoned heads in this squad – with seven league goals bagged from 31-year-old Alfie May as a focal point in attack – and Redmond will hope the Birmingham manager can have the same impact on him if a move is finalised.

The one-time England senior international could also feel there’s unfinished business for him at St. Andrew’s, with Birmingham’s promotion chances no doubt boosted by their former homegrown ace rejoining.
