Easton McMorris, the former Jamaica captain and West Indies batter, has died at the age of 86. A right-hand opening batter, McMorris played 13 Tests between 1958 and 1966, scoring 564 runs at an average of 26.85.McMorris scored 13 and 16 on debut against Pakistan in 1957-58, lining up alongside Everton Weekes, Garry Sobers and Conrad Hunte. In his next match, against England in Bridgetown, he was run out at the non-striker’s end without facing a ball. He had to withdraw from the next Test after picking up an injury, but returned for the third and scored 73 in front of his home supporters. After missing out on West Indies’ tour of Australia in 1960-61, McMorris was recalled for the home series against India in 1961-62, where he hit the only Test century of his career, at Sabina Park. He followed that up with back-to-back fifties at Port of Spain.McMorris toured England in 1963 and 1966 but averaged just 13.38 in his four Test appearances, struggling to come to terms with the slower, greener pitches. He, however, continued to score heavily for Jamaica in the Shell Shield, in latter years as their captain, and ended his first-class career with 5906 runs from 95 matches, including 18 centuries.”I had the privilege to engage with Mr McMorris on a few occasions over the years. I found him to be an encouraging and selfless gentleman,” CWI president Ricky Skerritt said. “Easton was a true stalwart of the game and contributed significantly at all levels, on and off the field.”He was a leader at the Lucas Cricket Club, carrying on the legacy established by the great George Headley. After retirement from playing, he gave yeoman service as a board member of the Jamaica Cricket Association and manager of the Jamaica cricket team.”

Tom Latham, Will Young make India's spinners toil after Shreyas Iyer's 105

Tim Southee delivered one of the great Test-match spells by a visiting fast bowler in India to drag New Zealand back into the Kanpur Test, before Will Young and Tom Latham put on a resolute and unbroken 129 to ensure all four results were still in play after two engrossing days.Having been bowled out for 345 shortly after lunch, India probed from every conceivable angle for 57 overs, but their five bowlers couldn’t separate New Zealand’s opening pair. While the ball occasionally gripped and turned square, and more often kept low, the slowness of the surface allowed the batters to adjust and survive.

For all their frustrations over the last two sessions, India’s five-man attack bowled with control throughout – particularly in the post-tea session, in which they conceded just 57 runs in 31 overs – ensuring that the scoring rate was kept down, and New Zealand went to stumps still trailing by more than 200 runs.Young and Latham, however, showed the rest of New Zealand’s line-up a template to survive. Knowing that the pitch wasn’t going to rush them, they let the ball come to them, meeting it right under their eye as far as possible, and didn’t go looking for scoring opportunities outside their comfort zones. Against the spinners, Latham waited for the line to shift outside off stump so he could sweep while minimising the risk of lbw. That shot was his primary scoring option aside from leg-side flicks and nudges.Young, meanwhile, reached his fifty with a flurry of drives against the spinners before tea. But he was content to remain scoreless for long periods in the final session, when R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel began to find their rhythm and the ideal pace and seam positions for this surface. As the day neared its close, all three spinners began to beat the bat more often. Ashwin thought he had Latham caught behind in the penultimate over of the day, and the umpire agreed, only for a review to indicate it was bat brushing pad rather than an edge. It was Latham’s third successful review; he had twice been adjudged lbw off the inside edge before tea, once against Umesh Yadav and once against Jadeja. The first half of the day belonged to Southee. Having nursed a groin strain that took him off the field for parts of the first day’s play, he recovered sufficiently – or bowled through residual pain – to pick up four wickets in an unbroken spell of 11 overs on the second morning to complete his 13th five-wicket haul in Test cricket and his second in India.Tom Latham profited from the sweep in Kanpur•BCCI

Starting the day at 258 for 4 with two half-centurions at the crease, India were bowled out for the addition of only 87 runs. The bulk of those runs came from Shreyas Iyer, who became the 16th India batter to score a century on debut, and Ashwin, who made a counterattacking 38 at No. 8.Kyle Jamieson was New Zealand’s most impactful performer on day one, but he began day two completely out of rhythm, and Iyer, resuming on 75, hit him for five fours in his first three overs of the morning to hurry into the 90s. He brought up his hundred in Jamieson’s next over, with a sliced drive for two backward of point.By then, though, Southee had already made a crucial incision. He began the day with four balls wide of Jadeja’s off stump, delivered from around the wicket, and the left-hander shouldered arms to all of them. He followed it with one that swung sharply into the stumps, and Jadeja, stuck in his crease, played down the wrong line and was struck on the back pad, with an umpire’s call verdict on height saving him after New Zealand reviewed the initial not-out decision.Southee didn’t have to wait long to get his man, though. A similar delivery in his next over drew a similar, leaden-footed response, and this time the ball rattled into the stumps via the inside edge. The wickets kept coming. A pair of full outswingers that weren’t quite full enough to drive prised Wriddhiman Saha and Iyer out; the first, delivered from wide of the crease, drew an off-drive down the wrong line, and the second, delivered from closer to the stumps and swerving away to scramble the batter’s shape and causing him to spoon the ball to cover point. Then, in his eighth over of the morning, Southee alternated inswingers to the left-handed Axar with scrambled-seam balls that straightened off the pitch. Axar played and missed at the first scrambled-seam ball, and hung his bat out and edged the second to the keeper. India were 313 for 8.By then, Ashwin was already on 20 off 22 balls, having come in and taken on Southee’s outswingers and hit him for three fours through the off side. Southee kept going for three more overs in the quest to finish the innings off, but Ashwin farmed the strike, refusing singles to keep Umesh away from the strike as much as possible.Ashwin could have been dismissed for 16 when he stepped out to Ajaz Patel and missed an attempted lofted hit, with the ball scooting through low. The ball, however, narrowly missed off stump and bounced off Tom Blundell’s pad before he could react. It could have been the first wicket to fall to a spinner in this Test match, but as on day one – when he missed reviewing an lbw decision against Shubman Gill – the luck wasn’t quite with Ajaz.It turned after lunch, though, as he spun one out of the footmarks and past the outside edge to bowl Ashwin, and got one to skid through with the arm to trap Ishant Sharma plumb in front.

Afghan bowlers deliver another massive win to stay second on table

Hamid Hassan finished with 3 for 9 and Naveen-ul-Haq took 3 for 26 to crush Namibia

Shashank Kishore31-Oct-20213:38

WATCH – Afghanistan record big win against Namibia

Two nights after running Pakistan close, Afghanistan proved their experience on the big stage was a bridge too far for Namibia. Asghar Afghan, Afghanistan’s most successful T20I captain, was given a winning send off into retirement as the team notched up their second win in three games to stay second on the Group 2 table.A robust powerplay
Afghanistan swear by runs on the board template. And their approach so far has been to go hard in the powerplay. That didn’t change on Sunday as they raced to 50 for 0 in the first six. Denied much of the strike early on, Mohammad Shahzad played second fiddle to the burly left-handed Hazratullah Zazai. Namibia were in dire need of wickets as Ruben Trumpelmann, who took three wickets in his very first over in their last game, coming in for some tap from the openers. The slowdown
Overs 7-10 brought just one boundary as legspinner Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton cleverly used angles and deception in flight to spin a web. He troubled Rahmanullah Gurbaz with sharp legbreaks and then snuffed him out lbw with a full ball at the stroke of the 10th over. Shahzad fell soon after for 45, consumed by his own shot selection and heat as a strategically placed fly slip accounted for him in the 13th over. The farewell
An emotional Asghar walked out to a guard of honour from the Namibians, and aware of the need to take the innings deep, like they did the other night, nudged the ball around until Mohammad Nabi came out to bat in the 16th over. While he looked comfortable to pick runs, Asghar couldn’t bring out the big hits, eventually falling to a failed scoop for 31 off 23. Afghanistan managed three fours and a six in the last two overs, all off Nabi, to eventually finish with 160 for 5, Nabi making 32 not out off 17 balls.Watch highlights on ESPN+

The early strikes
Craig Williams was out fourth ball of the chase, toe-ending a lofted hit to mid-on. Then Michael van Lingen was deceived by a well-disguised back-of-the-hand slower one from Naveen-ul-Haq that he top-edged while attempting a half-hearted pull to short fine. They were 16 for 2 in the third over. The comeback
Ravaged by injuries to his shoulder, back, ankle, knees, Hassan, at 34, is significantly slower in pace but tries and makes up for it with his control. Five years after last featuring in a T20I, he returned to pick up the big wickets of Gerhard Erasmus and JJ Smit, who was instrumental in finishing off their chase against Scotland. The chase had well and truly derailed at the halfway mark. Then Rashid Khan, who came in to bowl in the eighth over, finished a spell in one go, for once not leaving his captain to worry about juggling his trump card, to finish with 4-0-14-1 to leave him one short of 400 T20 wickets. Barring David Wiese, none of the other Namibian batters offered any kind of assuredness. Eventually, he was taken out by Hassan with a superb yorker for a third wicket, by which time the Afghan party had well and truly begun.

Chelsea let a "wizard" leave for £0, now he’s worth £100m & like Palmer

Chelsea are growing this season, stretching up to the sky like a flower that has spent too long in the shadows. Enzo Maresca has much still to do before his project reaches its lofty goals, but the early signs are promising.

You can’t help but wonder where the club would be had Cole Palmer not been signed from Manchester City in a deal worth £40m plus add-ons last summer. It raised a few eyebrows at the time, but now, the imperious forward raises roofs by the dozen.

Cole Palmer's incredible rise

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher pronounced Palmer as “the best player in the Premier League” last month, with the England international wreaking utter chaos in his homeland once again.

Across 54 Chelsea appearances, the 22-year-old has scored 31 goals and supplied 20 assists, which is absolutely absurd when you consider that he had only been afforded a bit-part role as he cut his teeth with Manchester City.

Having dazzled in Blue last season, for a side that ebbed and flowed like a raging tide, Palmer has carried his quality into the current campaign, now plying his art alongside a better calibre of teammates, so far scoring six goals and assisting five more over just seven matches in the English top flight.

Saka vs Palmer

Palmer is one of the finest in the business, there’s no doubt about that. However, Chelsea could have manufactured their own homegrown version of the inevitable attacking machine, for they once let Michael Olise slip through their fingers.

Chelsea fumbled the bag with Michael Olise

Olise signed for Bayern Munich this summer in a deal worth only £50m – which is, obviously, not a small sum but still a figure that seems below the bracket that the former Crystal Palace star should fall into. Indeed, the Bavarian giants now deem him to be worth around £100m.

Michael Olise for Crystal Palace

He’d been breathtaking at Selhurst Park, scoring at a prodigious rate despite injury problems last season, posting ten goals and six assists across only 14 Premier League starts, also averaging 1.9 key passes, 2.1 dribbles and 5.7 successful duels per game, as per Sofascore.

His influence had been so significant that talent scout Jacek Kulig hailed him as “one of the EPL’s best players”. Everyone wanted a piece, including Chelsea, who believed they were ahead in the race back in June, with Manchester City and Arsenal also circling like sharks.

However, it was, of course, Bayern who triumphed, and boy are they reaping the rewards, with the France international having scored six goals and added three assists across nine matches for Die Roten thus far.

Given that Olise spent seven years in Chelsea’s famed Cobham academy, there’s definitely a sense of frustration that he was not kept on the books and nurtured to the top, instead being released for nothing and spending a bit of time with Manchester City before starting his senior career with Reading.

One that got away

The transfers that nearly happened but never did. This article is part of Football FanCast's One That Got Away series.

Described as a “wizard” by writer Muhammad Butt, he could be every bit as good as Palmer for the west Londoners.

As per FBref, Olise ranks among the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 7% for assists, the top 12% for shot-creating actions and the top 10% for progressive carries per 90, leading the stats-based site to liken him to Chelsea’s phenomenon.

What could have been. Luckily, Chelsea have Palmer at their disposal, so probably aren’t rueing his loss all that much, for their superstar is leading them back toward glory.

Mullin and Reynolds react to ‘bite’ footage of Wrexham star vs Birmingham

Wrexham striker Paul Mullin has provided his reaction to accusations that he bit an opposition player in his side’s 3-1 defeat to Birmingham City.

Wrexham beaten in controversial clash at Birmingham

Phil Parkinson’s side faced their most daunting test of the season so far, making the trip to a Blues side who many are tipping to be crowned League One champions later this season. The top-of-the-table clash was an eagerly anticipated occasion, not least because of the A-List owners of both clubs, including Ryan Reynolds and Tom Brady.

Wrexham made a dream start to proceedings at St Andrew’s, taking the lead through Jack Marriott early on after the hosts failed to clear a corner, but Birmingham were largely the superior team from that moment on.

The hosts were level at half-time after Jay Stansfield made it 1-1 from close range, with the big-money signing adding his second of the night after the break, heading home. Tomoki Iwata then put the Midlands team out of sight, as frustrations started boiling over for both sides, with Krystian Bielik receiving a second yellow card late in the day.

Mullin was introduced as a substitute and was a spiky presence throughout, as one incident involving Birmingham’s Alex Cochrane led to a huge melee on the pitch, with some even claiming that the Wrexham star had attempted to bite his opponent while they were on the ground.

Mullin and Reynolds react to 'bite' footage

Taking to X after the match, Mullin played down the accusations that he bit Cochrane during their altercation, sharing the footage himself and laughing off the suggestion, joking about the Birmingham player’s leg moving towards his mouth.

Mullin has handled this in the best way possible, and Reynolds certainly isn’t alarmed either, replying to the striker’s tweet in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Granted, there was a feeling that the 29-year-old lost his head at times on Monday night, and it can be argued that there was a split-second moment when he considered biting Cochrane’s leg. The striker stopped himself however, and the restraint to avoid a Luis Suarez-esque moment of madness despite clearly struggling with the emotions of the fixture should be praised, not criticised.

More importantly, this was a frustrating night for anyone of a Wrexham persuasion, and the players didn’t handle the situation well, in terms of keeping their heads and not allowing a physical and quality Birmingham side to irritate them.

Celtic struck gold selling "incredible" star for more than Engels is worth

Celtic are back in action in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday as they prepare to welcome Hearts to Parkhead in the fifth match of the season.

The Hoops have won all four of their league games without conceding a single goal so far and will be looking to maintain their perfect start against the Jam Tarts.

Brendan Rodgers won the title in his first season back in Glasgow and is now plotting a course to back-to-back trophies since his return to the club last summer.

Celtic have beaten Kilmarnock, Hibernian, St Mirren, and Rangers in the Premiership so far, whilst also beating Hibs in the League Cup, this term.

The Northern Irish head coach was backed during the recently closed summer transfer window, as the Hoops made eight additions to their first-team squad.

Viljami Sinisalo, Kasper Schmeichel, Arne Engels, Adam Idah, Paulo Bernardo, Auston Trusty, Alex Valle, and Luke McCowan all came through the door, with three of them arriving on deadline day at the end of last month.

Celtic swooped to sign Engels, Trusty, and McCowan on the final day of the summer transfer window and one of three deals was a club-record transfer for the Hoops.

Celtic smashed their club record

The Scottish giants reportedly agreed an £11m fee with Bundesliga side Augsburg to sign the central midfielder, which makes him the most expensive signing in the club's history.

The previous record was held by Odsonne Edouard, who Celtic paid £9m to sign from Paris Saint-Germain in 2018, although Idah joined in a deal that could be worth up to £9.5m earlier this summer, which would have made him the record-holder if those add-ons had been achieved without the signing of Engels.

At the age of 20, the Hoops have signed the Belgian starlet for his potential to develop and improve over the years to come, rather than the player he is now.

Arne Engels for Augsburg.

Engels was not a regular starter for Augsburg in the Bundesliga last season, starting 13 of his 32 appearances, and should not be expected to be an instant star for Celtic this term.

It may take time for the Belgium international to find his feet in Scotland and grow into the side, whether that happens in the 2024/25 campaign or next season.

£11m is an expensive gamble by Celtic, though, but they must have a lot of faith that he will develop into a huge asset for the club, just like the player he could replace in the team – Matt O'Riley.

How much Celtic paid for Matt O'Riley

Back in January 2022, former Hoops manager Ange Postecoglou swooped to sign the central midfielder from English League One side MK Dons.

It was reported that the Scottish giants agreed a fee of £1.5m plus add-ons to sign the Danish talent from the third tier outfit ahead of the second half of the campaign.

The young midfield prospect was plying his trade in the third division of football in England, which meant that Celtic were plucking him out of relative obscurity – compared to Engels from the Bundesliga – after his strong start to the 2021/22 campaign with MK Dons.

As you can see in the table above, the former Fulham prospect had caught the eye with his contributions as both a scorer and a creator of goals for the English side.

That form convinced Postecoglou and Celtic to spend £1.5m on him at the start of 2022 and that decision turned out to be a stroke of genius.

O'Riley produced four goals and three assists in his first 16 appearances in the Premiership, before going on to plunder three goals and 12 assists in his first full season with the club. This shows that he made an instant impact in Scotland, as he was immediately able to make a difference at the top end of the pitch.

The 23-year-old star, who was described as being in "incredible" condition by teammate Callum McGregor, then exploded with a return of 18 goals and 13 assists in 37 appearances in the Scottish top-flight during the 2023/24 campaign under Rodgers.

He provided a regular threat as both a scorer and a creator of goals from a central midfield position for the Hoops and that convinced a Premier League side to swoop in with a mega-money offer.

How much Celtic received for Matt O'Riley

Last month, Brighton & Hove Albion completed a deal to sign the Denmark international from the Premiership champions for a fee of more than £25m.

The midfield sensation was sold for more than Kieran Tierney and Jota to become the most expensive export from Celtic, and Scotland, in history, and more expensive than the £11m signing of Engels.

This shows that the Hoops hit the jackpot when they signed the young gem from MK Dons for just £1.5m as they made a gigantic profit on him in less than three years.

He spent two full seasons at Parkhead and his exceptional performances, which helped the team to win trophies, were enough to convince an English side to spend a huge sum of money to secure his services.

It is the perfect example of Celtic's player trading model, as they snapped up a promising player for a relatively small fee and developed him into a huge asset.

Postecoglou and his scouting team played a blinder by identifying him as a player with potential and Rodgers will be hoping for a similar outcome with Engels.

Of course, the Belgian talent has been signed for a significantly higher fee than O'Riley was but if he can live up to his potential and consistently deliver on the pitch, then that could attract interest from elsewhere and result in the club making another big profit further down the line.

It is now down to the coaching team and Engels to work hard to ensure that he is a success at Parkhead and is able to make the next step in his career.

Rangers now in talks for Clement target who Mike Ashley once bid £10m for

Rangers have begun talks to sign a defender that Mike Ashley once tried to sign for Newcastle United, according to a new report.

Pressure is very much on Philippe Clement and Rangers this season, as there is an expectation that the club puts up a stronger fight this time around when it comes to competing with arch rivals Celtic. The Gers fell away late last season, and to avoid a repeat of that, Clement and the Rangers board have been busy in the transfer market, making sure they have a squad good enough to compete on all fronts.

As the 11 p.m. deadline on Friday approaches, Rangers can safely say they have been busy, as they have so far added eight players to their squad. But given how well Celtic have started the new season, Rangers may still be in the market for one or two additions to give them the best chance of success.

It has been reported in recent days that Rangers could be looking into a deal to sign Pyramids FC winger Ibrahim Adel, who has just impressed with his national team Egypt in the Olympic Games. The Scottish side are said to be very keen on the player, and they would be willing to spend as much as £5 million to sign the winger, but they do face competition from the likes of Ipswich Town and Leicester City.

As well as looking at Adel, Rangers were also said to be interested in a possible deal for Troyes defender Jackson Porozo, who spent last season on loan at Turkish side Kasimpasa. The report states that the Gers made contact with the French side over a possible deal, but it wasn’t a situation that was ongoing, with the demands “not suitable” for Rangers, and the defender instead joined Leganes.

Therefore, Rangers are still in the market for a new defender, and it appears as though their search has taken them to a player who was once wanted by former Newcastle owner Mike Ashley, who of course held a rather unpopular 8.92% stake at Ibrox too between the years of 2014 and 2017.

Rangers in talks to sign Philippe Clement target

According to French outlet L’Equipe, Rangers are in talks to sign Hoffenheim defender Stanley N'Soki. The report states that the defender could well leave the German side in this transfer window, with a loan move being looked at.

N’Soki is contracted to the Bundesliga side until the summer of 2027, and Clement, who managed the defender at Brugge, would personally like to bring the central defender to Ibrox in what remains of this transfer window.

The report states that talks have begun and have been ongoing in recent hours, as Rangers look to strengthen their defensive line. Rangers fans might not be aware of N’Soki, but he has appeared on the radar of Newcastle United before, as in 2018 Ashley made a bid worth £10 million to sign N’Soki for the Magpies, but in the end the deal failed to materialise. However, a few years on, and he could now be heading for that move to the UK.

Jones fell in pursuit of his 11th four, well-caught at deep square leg by Alex Davies, but the wicket did not stem the run-flow as George Balderson (33 from 43 balls) helped Wells seal the victory with a measured partnership of 70 in 12 overs.
