Morne Morkel's mayhem rouses soggy match from its torpor

Steve Patterson’s men grateful for the late return of rain as their lacklustre efforts go unpunished

“When an hour is all thou hast, make much of that hour.” The phrase might be found on an old sampler reminding folk of the virtues of the Protestant work ethic yet it carried topical power on the final morning of this wet game at Guildford. For against the background clatter of staff gracelessly stacking chairs long before this match ended, Surrey’s Morne Morkel took three wickets in 12 balls, thereby establishing a dominance that would reach its climax when Yorkshire were bowled out for 148 just before tea.Steve Patterson’s batsmen thus spent the truncated last session of this suddenly dramatic game ensuring cock-up did not become total calamity. They achieved that goal although it was fitting that the weather came to their aid. Bad light trimmed four overs from the 38 Yorkshire might have faced but the openers, Adam Lyth and Will Fraine, had negotiated their way to 30 without loss when the draw was agreed amid gloom and approaching showers. All the same, a contest which had hitherto been notable mainly for its appalling weather had suddenly acquired much greater interest and that was a fitting reward for the tough souls who had braved both wind and rain on this last day.”Vigilance is the watchword of the righteous.” That saying, too, might once have been embroidered and framed in God-fearing households yet it has carried a powerful admonition for Yorkshire this week, quite regardless of their beliefs. To borrow a more modern idiom, they have not always been at it during this game. They didn’t expect to play on the second day and had to be roused from their hotel by coaches who were astonished to see Surrey warming up and groundsmen preparing the pitch. Then on this final morning, with nothing but bonus points seemingly at stake, they batted as if shocked into timidity by the intensity of Ben Foakes’ attack. But any tendency to pile blame on Yorkshire’s batsmen for their side’s collapse should be balanced by recognition of the excellence of Surrey’s bowling. That quality was apparent when Morkel dug in the first ball of the morning with perfect accuracy and a disconcerted Gary Ballance could only fend a catch to Dean Elgar in the gully. We little knew it but the tone of the day had been set. Next over Morkel pitched the ball up and had both Fraine and Jack Leaning caught behind by Foakes, who dived in front of first slip to make the second snare. After bowling only four overs Morkel was replaced by Jordan Clark who took his first wicket for his new county when Jonny Tattersall’s thoroughly irresponsible slash edged the ball high to Rikki Clarke at first slip. Next ball the same combination did for a rather less culpable Dom Bess and one’s thoughts went back to the July morning last summer when Clark, then wearing Lancashire’s colours, dismissed Joe Root, Kane Williamson and Johnny Bairstow with successive balls. There was no repeat of that famous hat-trick this damp morning in Guildford but the sense of panic among the batting side was similar. There was a rain break but it did not douse Surrey’s fire. Immediately the players returned Tom Kohler-Cadmore was caught down the leg side off Clarke for 14 and made his way off the field rubbing his hip. Three wickets had fallen for no runs and there was really no telling which way this game would go.As it turned out, an utterly unpredictable morning was followed by the most of predictable of early afternoons in a week which has taught us all to value the high days of summer. The rain set in and prevented any resumption until 2.30pm. But still the pattern of the cricket did not change. Despite Jordan Thompson’s late aggression – the debutant included a huge six off Clarke in his 34 – the 55 runs added by his side’s last three wickets could not prevent the follow on being enforced. After taking four wickets in the innings, Morkel took an excellent catch over his head at long leg to remove Thompson off Matt Dunn. Surrey’s cricketers then beetled off to have tea and prepare to bowl again. Yorkshire had lost all their wickets for 97 runs, the last nine of them in 26 overs. But the excitement was over. Lyth and Fraine batted with immense care in the final session of this game and spectators were left to wonder what might have happened had not 56.3 overs been lost on this last day. Surrey now have a free week but can be emboldened by their cricket at Guildford. Yorkshire, for their part, were probably grateful they could skedaddle home with five points for the draw. Not so far away, Somerset were the big winners from this rain-wrecked four days. Even in mid-June neutrals may be tantalised by the thought that this may finally be the Wyverns’ year.

The Brazilian's future at Santiago Bernabeu became a subject of speculation after his recent interviews with a few media outlets suggested that the player could seek a transfer away from the club. However, on Wednesday, Rodrygo took to social media to refute those rumours as he claimed he is happy to continue at Real Madrid.

In an interview with – which was recorded a few weeks back, the winger had said, "It also depends. Of course, I want to stay here for many years. I want to be here as long as I feel that I help and I’m important to the team. And from the moment when I see that I’m no longer important, maybe it’s time to look for another place.

"I don’t think that’s what’s happening at the moment and I’m not thinking about it. I always dreamed of playing here, it was always my favourite club. I have everything here, I am making a dream come true, I am already a champion of everything and as long as I am important I want to continue here."

When asked if he would consider playing in any other league, the player added, "The Premier League is a league that everybody likes, I am not going to close doors to any other league. Everyone knows that my dream is always to play for Real Madrid — I want to be here, but everything can be discussed. But my objective is to continue here."

WHAT RODRYGO SAID

Taking to X on Wednesday, the 23-year-old wrote, "A very annoying situation occurred today, where one of my interviews was completely taken out of context. To be very direct, I am VERY happy at Real Madrid, I live a dream every day and it does NOT cross my mind to leave the club of my life! Now we continue with history to make. By 15.

Newcastle could take Isak to the next level by signing £52m sensation

Newcastle United managed to stop the rot and undoubtedly put some confidence back in themselves following a comfortable Tynewear Derby victory over bitter rivals Sunderland in the FA Cup on Saturday.

However, there is no respite for Eddie Howe and his players who face Manchester City and Aston Villa over their next two outings in the Premier League.

While a win over the Black Cats was great for morale, the Magpies need to strengthen in January if they are to have any chance of clawing back 11 points on the top four.

Nevertheless, Howe is reportedly looking to sign a new winger by the end of the winter transfer window.

Newcastle United transfer news – Raphinha

According to a report from Sport, via Sport Witness, Newcastle United have a chance to sign Barcelona star Raphinha this month.

The outlet is claiming that the Spanish champions are growing frustrated with the Brazilian's inability to kick on under head coach Xavi, having arrived from Leeds United for £55m back in 2022.

Barcelona star Raphinha.

It was revealed before the summer transfer window opened that Newcastle were eyeing up a move for Raphinha but no transfer ever came to fruition, although the player is now said to have a market value of £52m, as per the CIES Football Observatory.

Raphinha has since become a mere squad player with the Catalan giants, having seen 887 minutes of action in total this season across 18 appearances, which equates to roughly 49 minutes per match.

Nevertheless, Raphinha still has a lot to offer on a football pitch and was even recently described as a winger with a "killer instinct" by journalist and online analyst Domagoj Kostanjsak. Now, the attacker could be on his way to St. James' Park.

Raphinha's stats comparison vs Miguel Almiron

Incidentally, Newcastle United fans may be grateful to see Raphinha in their own side for once as the Magpies have picked up merely one victory from a possible four against the Brazil international.

Furthermore, Raphinha got himself on the scoresheet twice at St James' Park and recorded one assist in these matches.

The right-wing position has been a problem area for Howe this season. Due to the lengthy absence of Jacob Murphy, the manager has been forced into using Miguel Almiron on the right side of the attack.

However, the Paraguayan has had a less than fruitful season for the Magpies, registering just two assists and bagging five goals in 30 appearances, although half of his assists came in the Tynewear Derby against an inferior Sunderland side.

Barcelona winger Raphinha.

Meanwhile, star striker Alexander Isak has been having a decent run of form recently, scoring four times in three matches but half of these goals came from the penalty spot.

From open play, the Swede has bagged just twice in his last eight appearances. One of the reasons for this is his lack of service up top, particularly from his right winger. Almiron currently boasts an average of 0.09 expected assists per 90, meaning the chances he creates are of very low quality.

Isak would love to play with someone like Raphinha who has registered seven assists already this season for Barcelona and is greatly outperforming Almiron in the final third.

Raphinha is a chance creation machine and is a much better player right now than Almiron, based on this stats table. He would help Isak reach a whole other level and the opportunity to bring him back to England shouldn't be snuffed at by Howe.

Southampton showing interest in “composed” Sorinola – he knows Martin

Southampton are showing an interest in a defender who has previously been managed by Russell Martin, according to a fresh report.

Southampton's results this season

The Championship side have made a generally positive start to the new campaign having secured 15 victories, six draws and suffered just four defeats from their opening 25 games, meaning that they currently find themselves third in the table.

Victory over Plymouth Argyle on Friday night lifted the Saints to third above Leeds United, who dropped points to fellow promotion rivals West Brom. Southampton are now just three points behind Ipswich in the automatic slots, with the Tractor Boys also failing to win.

While Martin will be happy with how his current squad are performing, that won’t stop him from entering the market to assess his options even further ahead of the upcoming transfer window, and he appears to have set his sights on a new left-back who is available to join immediately.

Southampton want to sign "intelligent" new player for Martin

This could be huge for the Saints…

ByTom Cunningham Dec 30, 2023

Since the start of his career, Matthew Sorinola has had spells at MK Dons, Beaconsfield Town and Swansea City, but with his contract at his most recent club, Belgian outfit Union SG, having been terminated, he is now a free agent looking to find his next permanent home (Transfermarkt – Sorinola statistics).

During his time at MK Dons and Swansea, Martin coached the 22-year-old at both clubs so he will already hold an existing connection with him, and if the latest update is to be believed, the manager is looking to form a reunion for a third time in January.

Southampton keen on Sorinola

According to TEAMtalk, Southampton are considering a move for Sorinola, but they are set to face stiff competition in their pursuit, with three other teams also hoping to secure his services.

Southampton and Middlesbrough are two of four Championship clubs who are showing an interest in free agent wing-back Matty Sorinola.

Current Southampton boss Martin is open to the prospect of linking up with him for a third time after being his boss with MK Dons and Swansea. Middlesbrough, Stoke and Preston are also keen on the wing-back – who is happy operating on either flank.”

Swansea City's former loan starMatthew Sorinola.

Sorinola could be a bargain arrival

While Sorinola is naturally a left-back, he’s arguably stronger in the offensive aspect of his game, having clocked up 14 goal involvements (nine assists and five goals) from 93 appearances since the start of his career, with the defender able to pose a threat in the final third.

The Lambeth-born talent also recorded 78 crosses over the course of last season during his time at Swansea, which was the second-highest total throughout their squad, highlighting his desire to use his pace, burst down the flank and create as many chances as possible (FBRef – Swansea statistics).

Likes to dribble

Likes to play short passes

Commits fouls often

With Russell Martin having previously described Sorinola as a player who is “composed” when he’s on the ball, there’s no doubt that he could be a bargain purchase for Southampton should he sign on the dotted line as a free agent, making this one to keep a close eye on.

Ange eyeing up January Spurs move for “insane” £43m Son heir

Tottenham Hotspur suffered a third successive defeat in the Premier League as Aston Villa leapfrogged the London side into the top four on Sunday afternoon.

Ange Postecoglou was appointed in the summer after exemplary work in Scotland with Celtic, with the approach from Daniel Levy decidedly more pragmatic after failed spells with Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

And though recent travails have yielded rotten results, it's important to remember that injuries and suspensions have wreaked havoc on Postecoglou's budding dynasty – Rome wasn't built in a day and all that, but it's true, and time will reap lucrative rewards.

The Lilywhites squad's lack of depth has proved to be the Achilles heel so far, and while the forthcoming run of fixtures looks daunting, Postecoglou will be confident that his side can maintain a foothold on Champions League contention and bolster in January, with some exciting names linked…

Tottenham transfer targets – Santiago Giménez

Tottenham will prioritise the strengthening of the defence this winter and rightly so, with Micky van de Ven injured until after the new year and the squad options failing to evoke confidence.

But the frontline could also use some attention and considering that Spurs are firmly in contention for Feyenoord striker Santiago Giménez – according to French outlet L'Equipe – it may well be wise to make a move.

Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez.

The report claims that the Eredivisie champions would demand €50m (£43m) for the Mexican star, also stressing that he could leave in January given the arresting possible recuperation on Feyenoord's part.

With Real Madrid also named as a suitor, Postecoglou should launch an offer quickly to provide his outfit with a starring talisman for years to come.

Santiago Giménez's style of play

While many have made the jump from Dutch football to the Premier League with seamless ease, there have been some notable players to have flattered to deceive since arriving on English shores, with the judicious Levy probably wary of coughing up such a sum for a player somewhat untested on the biggest stage.

In 2020, Steven Bergwijn's £27m January transfer to London didn't work out and Vincent Janssen scored 27 Eredivisie goals in the season before his transfer to Spurs, while Antony has been abject at Manchester United since his staggering £86m move from Ajax last year.

Nonetheless, Gimenez looks the real deal and has been lauded for his "insane" finishing ability by journalist Antonio Mango, with his haul of 18 goals – including a hat-trick against Excelsior on Saturday – and three assists from 16 appearances across all competitions this term certainly not to be sniffed at.

The 22-year-old joined Feyenoord from Mexican side Cruz Azul in July 2022 and played an important role in his club's title triumph, scoring 28 goals and providing three assists across the 2022/23 campaign.

Spurs have been delightfully fluid under Postecoglou's management and had flourished with Heung-min Son up front before injuries derailed the progress, but the acquisition of a free-scoring target man such as Gimenez could be a useful avenue to delve down.

To emphasise this point, the 23-cap international ranks among the top 1% of forwards across divisions similar to the Eredivisie for goals scored and touches in the attacking penalty area, the top 3% for total shots taken and the top 20% for progressive carries per 90, as per FBref.

Welcoming the 5 foot 11 talisman to the fold could be the perfect way to sharpen the spearhead, providing Son with the counterweight to settle the equilibrium.

Heung-min Son's season in numbers

Son's a stalwart down the N17; adored by Spurs supporters and respected across the game, the South Korean gem has completed 386 appearances for his side since joining from Bayer Leverkusen for £22m in 2015, having clinched 153 goals and 81 assists.

Last season, he was definitely not at his best as Tottenham struggled but he has been revitalised this time around after Postecoglou recognised his goalscoring brilliance should be channelled into a focal role up top.

Appointed captain this summer, the 31-year-old has bagged eight goals and an assist from ten matches as centre-forward in the Premier League this season and earned praise for "finishing everything with aplomb" by football.london's Alasdair Gold.

The £190k-per-week ace might be a natural scorer but he is expansive in his skill set and has demonstrated his dynamism over the past few months, ranking among the top 10% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, pass completion and progressive passes, and the top 13% for progressive carries per 90.

How Santiago Giménez could thrive at Tottenham

This difference in style would be perfect as Tottenham look to compete across multiple fronts going forward, and while Son is thriving Alejo Veliz is the only other senior centre-forward in the fold; aged only 20 and joining from Argentinian side Rosario Central for £13m in the summer, he's not ready for a starring role.

Harry Kane – Spurs' record goalscorer – was sold to Bayern Munich in the summer after many years of service, having plundered 32 goals and five assists last year. Son has been immense in taking the baton but he is not the long-term solution.

Gimenez has been dubbed a "machine" by talent scout Jacek Kulig for his prolific escapades and looks like he boasts enough quality in the final third to assume the role that Kane has left behind.

Son could even form a partnership with the Eredivisie star under Postecoglou's wing, utilising his protean threat to blend with Gimenez's knack for finding the back of the net.

While £43m is no small sum, Spurs will clearly need to strengthen in January if they are to return to form capable of matching the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool, and this could be the impactful addition needed to spearhead the resurgence.

Man Utd’s "outstanding" academy star could soon usurp Rashford

Manchester United have reaped the benefits of unearthing talent from their academy over the years, with one starlet waiting in the wings for his pending breakthrough at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag has seen first-hand how talent from Carrington can bolster the first-team squad, with Marcus Rashford’s 41 goal contributions last season guiding the Red Devils to a host of highs during the Dutchman’s first campaign as manager.

Now, the former Ajax boss could replicate the rise of Rashford by handing one teen in the academy a shot at senior level.

Omari Forson’s career in numbers

In 2020, winger Omari Forson penned a scholarship deal with United after spending time in both West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur’s academies during his youth.

Since arriving in Manchester, the Londoner has thrived at Carrington, prevailing as one of the academy’s best right-wingers due to his consistency when contributing to goals season after season.

Once lauded as “outstanding” by Keith Southern, a member of Everton U21’s coaching staff, after scoring a hattrick when playing on the left side against the Toffees, the 19-year-old is showing signs that he could soon follow Rashford’s path to stardom at Old Trafford.

How Omari Forson could become Marcus Rashford 2.0

This week, the Englishman has been in the news with regard to a rumoured contract extension, with his current deal set to expire in the summer.

Despite being yet to make his senior debut, Ten Hag reinforced his valuation of the forward by naming him in the squad for two of United’s Champions League group games this season, suggesting that a breakthrough could be on the horizon.

In 2016, Rashford was named in the starting XI to face FC Midtjylland in the Europa League, making his senior debut on a night that ultimately shaped his career, scoring two goals in the club’s victory.

Should the Red Devils drop into the Europa League this term, there could be an opening for fringe players such as Forson to make an impact just as the Carrington graduate did to open the doors to his magnificent career so far at his boyhood club.

Not only could Forson replicate the journey of the 26-year-old, but given the current climate at United, the 19-year-old could even usurp the England international, who has been struggling for form in 2023/24 – scoring just once in all competitions.

Having already recorded nine goal contributions in eight appearances this term, the teenager has registered more goals and assists than anyone in Ten Hag’s first team this campaign, with Bruno Fernandes the top contributor with four goals and three assists in all competitions.

Only time will tell if Forson will make a breakthrough this season at Old Trafford, although when considering United’s struggles with underperforming wide players in 2023/24, the teen could offer more than most in Ten Hag’s current XI.

Brazil player ratings vs Spain: Endrick scores again after Lamine Yamal runs Selecao ragged as world's best wonderkids put on a show

The two rising stars wrote the first chapter in what could just be the game's next great rivalry at Santiago Bernabeu

Tuesday's friendly was billed as Spain vs Brazil, a battle of international heavyweights gearing up for a big summer with a massive tune-up at Santiago Bernabeu. In reality, though, it really ended up being Lamine Yamal vs Endrick, a battle between two teenagers that look set to define this sport for the decade to come.

The match ended level at 3-3, a back-and-forth game with three penalties awarded by the referee. The game was defined, though, by the two young stars, both of whom had their hands all over their teams' brightest moments.

Yamal dazzled throughout, embarrassing Brazil's defenders from the opening whistle. He drew one penalty, converted by Rodri, before setting up another late on, with his incredible pass in the game's final moments leaving Lucas Beraldo with no choice but to concede another spot-kick. Overall, the 16-year-old was a menace throughout, and showed exactly why Barcelona and Spain are so high on one of the youngest breakthrough stars we've ever seen.

Not to be outdone, though, was Endrick. The Brazilian starlet came on at half-time, and it took just a few minutes for him to make his mark in his future home. He'll join Real Madrid soon, but he already has a signature moment at the Bernabeu thanks to his fantastic volleyed finish to open the second period. His time is coming and, if this was any evidence, there's not much many will be able to do to stop him.

This won't be the last battle between Yamal and Endrick, but both stole the show in this one and they'll probably continue to do so for years to come as their future rivalry may just be the next to transcend the sport.

Brought in to replace the absent Alisson and Ederson, and there wasn't much he could have done on any of the goals.

Danilo (5/10):

Was terrorised by Williams throughout the first half before being taken off at half-time.

Fabricio Bruno (6/10):

Probably the better of Brazil's two central defenders. His passing could have been a bit crisper but, overall, he was okay.

Lucas Beraldo (4/10):

Got put in a spin cycle by Olmo for Spain's second goal and conceded the penalty that led to the third. A rough night, to say the least.

Wendell (5/10):

Got cooked time and time again by Yamal, who will be in the defender's nightmares after a rough first-half performance. He got better as the game went on, though, to his credit.

Lucas Paqueta (6/10):

Didn't really do much of anything for most of the game. Surprisingly quiet from a usually influential player, but did score the pressure penalty late on to salvage a draw

Bruno Guimares (6/10):

Battled well and was accurate with his passes when he did get the ball. Was taken off at half-time, though.

Joao Gomes (4/10):

Conceded the first Spain penalty, although he was a bit unlucky there. Aside from that, though, had just 12 touches before being replaced at half-time.

Raphinha (5/10):

Never really got going throughout his 45 minutes on the field. Struggled to get into dangerous positions.

Rodrygo (7/10):

Was a bit lucky that Unai Simon essentially handed him a goal but, hey, he'll take it. You have to be there to benefit from that luck, and Rodrygo was there to take full advantage for a goal that did tip the momentum a bunch.

Vinicius Jr. (6/10):

It's been an emotional week for the Real Madrid star, who has been open and honest about his battles with racism in Spain. Thankfully, there were no incidents or unsavoury moments, so the focus could solely be on his performance. On that front, he was relatively quiet throughout his 71 minutes on the field as he struggled to show off the skill that usually makes him so dominant in this stadium.

Andre (6/10):

A steady shift from the Fluminense midfielder, who provided stability in the middle of the park.

Andreas Pereira (6/10):

Was tidy on the ball throughout, completing all but one of his passes.

Endrick (8/10):

What more can you say about this kid? Came on and immediately made his mark with a goal. If this was a sign of things to come, La Liga is in trouble.

Yan Couto (6/10):

Mercifully replaced Danilo in the second half and fared much better.

Douglas Luiz (6/10):

Did well when he got the ball during his 20 minutes or so.

Galeno (7/10):

Came on late for Rodrygo and drew the late penalty to seal the draw.

Dorival Junior(6/10):

Won't be too fussed with the result. Got a closer look at several Copa America contenders, most notably Endrick, who is making one heck of a case for a starting spot.

Man Utd: Red Devils’ teen sensation could be Ten Hag’s own Odegaard

Manchester United boast a rich history of academy production at the highest level, with their famed 'Class of 92' a shimmering example which other clubs could only dream of.

However, whilst many rush to outline that as the apex of their youth graduates, and rightly so, there has still been a steady stream of youngsters produced over the years that have gone on to have fine careers at the top level.

Marcus Rashford, although struggling recently alongside the rest of Erik ten Hag's side, is the current jewel, but his exploits have been supplemented over the years by the likes of Dean Henderson, Alejandro Garnacho, Anthony Elanga and James Garner, who are all enjoying spells with their respective clubs in the top flight of English football.

The hope will be that they can produce their next big star soon to help pull them out of their misery, with particular emphasis on unearthing a midfield maestro to help ease the desperate rebuild needed.

Whilst many would rush to champion Kobbie Mainoo, and rightly so given how extraordinary the 18-year-old has been performing for the U23s, there is arguably another within the academy with a differing profile that could aid them even more.

How good is Kobbie Mainoo?

Having been handed his first senior start just last term, the future is already exceedingly bright for the teenage maestro who is already capturing attention.

Kobbie Mainoo

After all, in the run-up to that 3-0 EFL Cup win over Charlton Athletic, the former Ajax boss would note: "We want to get into the semi-finals, so it's a big game. For him (Mainoo) it's a great opportunity, he did very well during the winter camp in Spain. He also did very well against Everton in a friendly. He deserved to play, so I'm happy to give him the opportunity – it's about deserving it."

This had been a long time coming for the Stockport-born creator, who Ten Hag actually earmarked for a first-team opportunity as Garnacho was breaking through: "But we want to develop players into the first team. So I think we are also in that perspective in a good way: Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo is also on his way. There is a pathway to the first team but they have to deserve it."

With two goals and two assists across 13 Premier League 2 games, it is fair to say that he certainly has done, starring as a calming presence in the engine room with enough know-how to chip in with goal contributions too.

However, he is not the only one starring in the midfield for the U21s, with a Norwegian starlet surely closing in on a similar senior path. His name is Isak Hansen-Aarøen.

Who is Isak Hansen-Aarøen?

Having plucked the teenager from his homeland in 2020 after starring for Tromso, it has been a rapid progression for the 19-year-old, who is enjoying a meteoric rise through the ranks and could soon be their latest official academy graduate.

Enjoying an impressive recent full campaign, where he recorded four goal contributions across 22 Premier League 2 games, this term is poised to be his best yet, having already scored twice in just four league matches.

Man United's Isak Hansen-Aaroen

Such form could catch the eye of Ten Hag, who will likely be well aware of Hansen-Aarøen's outstanding assets due to the numerous glowing testimonies that have poured in as he has made his way closer to senior football.

A former teammate of his at Tromso, Yttergård Jenssen, was one such name who rushed to praise the youngster who had just lit up the 2022 FA Youth Cup final: "I think he was very good and the fact that he has taken the next step so well is very cool. I realized that this was a talented boy already in the first training.” Jenssen told Dagbladet.

“He has some skills that are completely raw. He’s so playful with the ball. And the way he moves on a football field… There’s something artistic about it. He is a bit reminiscent of Martin Ødegaard."

Such high praise, both with regard to his beauty in possession and the comparison to one of the division's outstanding creators, must surely have piqued the interest of United's hierarchy. After all, with Bruno Fernandes often forced to shoulder the heavy creative burden, nurturing some support for the Portugal international would certainly not go amiss.

A stellar display against Leeds United in pre-season likely aided his case further, as Ten Hag noted back in July: "He did well, making a good pass for the first goal. He’s really comfortable on the ball; he has good vision and good scanning."

If he is to grow into half as successful a star as Arsenal's captain has become, it will certainly be another successful graduate for the fanbase to attach themselves to.

How good is Martin Odegaard?

After all, the Norway international only continues to go from strength to strength, having evolved with each passing year since his permanent departure from Real Madrid.

Once touted as the next big thing, plucked from his homeland as a 16-year-old to join the Spanish giants, such an overawing experience was bound to affect someone so young. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that his peak has come many years following that, having spearheaded the Gunners' unlikely title push last season.

With 15 goals and eight assists in the league, the 24-year-old was exceptionally prolific, having begun this term in similarly proficient fashion.

Mikel Arteta would laud the contribution of his midfield master after a stellar personal campaign, which should excite the Old Trafford faithful even more given the potential similarities: "Those are the demands he puts on himself and the areas he had huge margins to improve. He is making huge steps in the right direction to become a game-winner.

"He has a character that everybody respects, everybody admires and everybody follows. He does it in his own way. There are many ways to lead a team and he has a unique one. We don’t want to take anything from that."

Whilst the Dutch manager will likely have his focus on Mainoo as the next big star to break through, Hansen-Aarøen cannot be far behind, especially if he is to maintain his goalscoring form to start the new season.
