Birmingham fans left delighted with Jefferson Montero’s brief cameo v Fulham

It wasn’t a successful comeback, but it was certainly enough to get fans excited.

Jefferson Montero made only his third appearance for the Blues since his move from Swansea City in the summer on Saturday, having been out for some time with a thigh injury.

Whilst he didn’t manage to get on the scoresheet or register an assist (although he did come close with one cross) it gave Blues fan a little glimpse of what they’re missing.

We’ve spoken on FFC before about how crucial someone like Montero can be for Birmingham, so hopefully, he can get back to full strength sooner rather than later.

With two defeats in the last two games, they could really use that little creative spark that he brings.

So when the 30-year-old Colombian posted a video of his limited contributions from the weekend, it was enough to get fans on tenterhooks about what they might be seeing at St Andrew’s later in the season.

Here’s the best of the reaction.

Is this a taste of things yet to come?

Aston Villa must fend off Manchester United interest in John McGinn

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Although Aston Villa’s start to the 2019/20 campaign has seen the newly-promoted side collect just three wins from their first 12 league games, the form of midfielder John McGinn is reportedly attracting the interest of Manchester United.

Since arriving from Hibernian in 2018, McGinn has played a crucial role for Dean Smith’s side, earning both the players and fans’ Player of the Year accolade in their promotion-winning season from the Championship.

Yet whilst the West Midlands outfit will have been pleased with the undeniable impact the Scotsman has had in transforming their domestic fortunes, this has sparked interest from 13-time Premier League champions Manchester United, according to reports from ESPN.

United had expressed an interest in McGinn during the summer transfer window, as reported by The Sun, but the Red Devils could test the resolve of Villa owners Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris with an offer in January.

If the bid matches the £50m fee that was touted in the summer, this would represent a considerable profit for Villa on the £2.7m they shelled out to Hibernian in January 2018, but selling such an important player in Smith’s squad would unquestionably undermine the ambitions that the billionaire duo have – and impact the club’s chances of top flight survival this season.

With United having scored just 16 league goals so far this season – less than Burnley – a move for McGinn would provide attacking impetus to the club’s frontline, the 25-year-old having scored 10 goals whilst registering 11 assists since arriving at Villa Park, but in turn would take away from Villa’s. They’ve only netted once more than United in the top flight, and McGinn is their second-top scorer after summer signing Wesley.

There can be no doubting that the Scotsman possesses the ability and talent to make it at a top-six club, but it is essential that McGinn is retained even if the offers appear tempting to the Villa hierarchy. Losing him mid-season will inevitably reduce the Birmingham outfit’s chances of survival.

Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli is a "talent of the century", says Jurgen Klopp

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Jurgen Klopp has said that Gabriel Martinelli is a “talent of the century”.

What did he say?

Arsenal and Liverpool played out a thriller in the League Cup on Wednesday night. The Reds won on penalties, but that was only after a 5-5 draw in normal time.

Watch the moment Granit Xhaka’s Arsenal career may have come to an ugly end in the video below…

Martinelli, who joined the Gunners for £6m in the summer, scored twice, taking his tally for the season to seven goals. During the post-match reaction, the former Borussia Dortmund boss spoke glowingly of the 18-year-old, saying:

“Sepp van den Berg as well, he played an incredible game.

“That’s really difficult to deal with these guys. Martinelli’s pretty much the same age but he’s a talent of the century, he’s an incredible striker, so it’s really difficult.”

Lacazette out

Arsenal truly put their money where their mouth is during this summer transfer window.

They spent £137.16m, their second-highest spend in one window, on five permanent arrivals, as well as the loan addition of Dani Ceballos.

So far, those new faces have struggled to hit the expected heights at the Emirates Stadium. In all fairness, William Saliba is on loan at Saint-Etienne, but David Luiz has been part of a defence that has conceded 14 goals in the Premier League, whilst Ceballos and Nicolas Pepe have just four goals and five assists between them despite having made a combined 28 appearances.

Kieran Tierney spent the first part of the season injured and is only just coming into the side.

Martinelli, though, has been the one true revelation in the first few months of the campaign. Those seven strikes have come in just four starts as well, having scored in each one of those.

Despite that, he is yet to be included in the starting line-up in the Premier League. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the first-choice striker for Unai Emery, and rightly so, having scored eight goals in his first 12 games of the term.

However, Alexandre Lacazette is ahead of him in the pecking order too.

The 16-time France international has scored 38 goals in 94 appearances for the Gunners but, at 28 years old, his market value – currently at £63m according to Transfermarkt – is probably as high as it is ever going to be.

Such is Aubameyang’s goalscoring record – 49 in 77 matches for the north London outfit says it all – the former Lyon man is unlikely to ever be the undisputed first choice for the Gunners.

The Gabon international, though, has just a few years left at the top considering he is already 30, which is why it now makes sense to let Lacazette go and promote Martinelli to be the first back-up option. After all, talks over his future were already had in the summer.

He will still make his appearances in the cup competitions and, when Aubameyang needs a break, he can play in the league too. By the time the former Saint-Etienne forward does hang up his boots or move on, the teenager will be ready to take over.

“Talent of the century” is a huge appraisal of his ability. To truly develop, he needs a clearer path and more playing time. Lacazette’s departure, therefore, would allow both of those things to occur.

Everton fans fume at Andre Gomes despite EFL Cup win

Everton booked their spot in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup with a 2-0 win over Watford at Goodison Park on Tuesday night.

However, a number of the Merseyside club’s supporters were disappointed with what they saw from Andre Gomes during the contest.

According to WhoScored, the central midfielder only had one shot and one successful dribble during his 90 minutes on the field, whilst his pass success rate was down at 75%.

In the end, the home side managed to secure a place in the last eight of the competition courtesy of goals from Mason Holgate and Richarlison in the latter stages.

However, the performance of Gomes in a central position was not well received one bit.

The Portuguese lined up alongside fellow summer arrival Fabian Delph in the middle of the park, and he struggled to have a positive influence on the EFL Cup fixture.

Liverpool fans tear into journalist after he criticises the Reds’ start to the season

The Manchester Evening News’ Stuart Brennan has launched a scathing assessment of Liverpool’s start to the season, and many fans aren’t too happy with what he has said.

Typically covering Manchester City, Brennan has accused the Reds of being lucky in their start to the campaign, and argues that City have been more convincing despite the fact it is Jurgen Klopp’s side who boast a 100% record in the league.

In particular, he highlights a “stalemate” in Liverpool’s trip to Burnley prior to a fluke goal from Trent Alexander-Arnold, which came as a result of a deflected looping cross.

However, the fact he fails to mention the Reds went on to score two more, had 15 total shots and 64% possession has irked some fans, and many have decided to castigate or make fun of him.

One described the article as nonsense and it is clear they feel his viewpoint is an unfair one, as their team has scored 20 goals and only conceded six in the league, ranking second and first in the two departments.

Here are some of the reactions from the Anfield faithful.

Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk mugs off Everton in hilarious YouTube video

Virgil van Dijk’s appearance on Liverpool’s YouTube channel where he is interviewed by the club’s U8s is equal parts hilarious and devastating, depending on which colour of Merseyside you represent.

Even though the Netherlands captain was speaking to children, that didn’t stop him from completely mugging off one of the kids.

One of the youngsters bravely admitted to the Liverpool star that he was, in fact, an Everton fan, and van Dijk’s response was absolutely golden.

The Dutchman was asked how happy he was when he won the Champions League, to which he replied that he was very happy (duh).

He then asked the children if they were pleased when the Reds triumphed in Madrid, but one child wasn’t overjoyed as it was revealed he supports the Toffees.

Van Dijk sympathised with the child as he said: “It’s tough isn’t it? It must be very tough.” Later in the video though, he assured the young Blue he is in for a long season.

We can’t figure out what will be more annoying for Everton fans either, the fact that he’s probably right or the fact that he still managed to stay so effortlessly cool while being grilled by  some determined youngsters.

Liverpool fans savage Mohamed Salah after firing a blank against Sheffield United

[ad_pod ]After being a joint-winner of the Premier League’s Golden Boot last season along with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah has enjoyed a relatively decent start to the current campaign as well.Four goals and three assists in seven league games is certainly good value by most people’s standards. However, the Egyptian has drawn a blank in his last three outings for the club – against Chelsea, Napoli and Sheffield United. His display against the latter on Saturday afternoon certainly didn’t pull up any trees, and his 6.7 rating on Sofascore was the third-worst of any Liverpool player. He had four unsuccessful shot attempts, completed just 69% of his passes, and only had three more touches (43) than his goalkeeper. After seeing the 27-year-old’s rather insipid performance, Liverpool fans flooded to Twitter to voice their frustrations over the forward. Many supporters of the Merseyside club revealed Salah’s poor showing at Bramall Lane is nothing too dissimilar to his performances over the course of the season so far. Some Reds fans even called for Jurgen Klopp to drop the Egypt international in light of his questionable form.Check out some of the reaction of Liverpool fans below:

Aston Villa fans laud Tyrone Mings after earning England call-up

One of Aston Villa’s stars has been rewarded for his sublime form in 2019.

England manager Gareth Southgate has selected Tyrone Mings for their upcoming European 2020 Championship qualifiers against Bulgaria and Kosovo.

The 6 foot 5 powerhouse was a catalyst in turning Villa’s fortunes around last season, having joined on loan in January, the club soon went on a run of ten straight victories which led the club into the playoffs.

Southgate spoke about Mings’ call-up on Thursday afternoon, he said:

“Tyrone’s an interesting case as he entered the game a bit later and hasn’t played as much as a centre-back.

“I really like his leadership qualities. He’s an outstanding athlete.”

The 26-year-old has since taken to Twitter to share his delight at the news.

Several of the Villa Park fanbase replied praising their popular centre-back.

One supporter said he would one day be the England captain whilst another added that it was fully deserved as he had been an ‘unreal professional’ since joining the club.

A further member of the Villa faithful claimed the defender had been nothing short of exceptional with one more telling him to go and prove his doubters wrong.
