Tottenham trying to sign Dybala

According to a report by Italian news outlet Calciomercato, Tottenham Hotspur and Daniel Levy are really trying to sign Juventus star Paulo Dybala – coming as there is apparently no longer a problem with his infamous image rights which stopped a move in 2019.

Indeed, Dybala was close to joining Spurs nearly two years ago, but the deal was complicated by an unforeseen issue in the player’s image rights – which were previously sold to a company in Malta owned by his former agent Pierpaolo Triulzi.

Levy really trying for Dybala

Tottenham and Levy would have wanted to use the 27-year-old’s image rights to make back some money off his signing after agreeing a deal (The Times).

As a result, when the issue couldn’t be resolved, a transfer was well and truly off the cards.

However, Calciomercato have dropped a rather exciting claim – with the Italian outlet explaining that Tottenham are now ‘really trying’ to sign Dybala given his past image rights are now no longer an issue.

The Italian outlet describes Levy’s alleged desire to do a deal as a ‘crazy’ idea, but also hinted at hope, going on to say they can ‘sink the blow in a more defined way’.

Transfer Tavern take

Serie A legend Alessandro Del Piero has lauded Dybala as ‘extraordinary’ (talkSPORT), and it’s clear to see he is a very elite player despite his injury issues this season.

Despite missing 20 matches over 2020/2021, the Argentine has still averaged an impressive 2.6 shots, 1.8 key passes and 1.4 completed dribbles per 90 over eight Serie A starts (WhoScored).

The £225,000-per-week star appears to be back on Levy’s wish list after the infamous failed 2019 attempt, but only time will tell whether Spurs can seriously pull off a move this time round.

Cullen value triples since West Ham exit

David Moyes should have no regrets over West Ham United selling Josh Cullen amid claims the midfielder is now worth three-times what RSC Anderlecht paid only last year.

What’s the word?

According to Sport/Foot Magazine, via Sport Witness, Cullen’s sensational start to life in Belgium has seen his market value skyrocket in the five months since his West Ham exit.

The Hammers allowed the 24-year-old to move to Lotto Park on Deadline Day in October for around £500,000, as he’d failed to earn a place in Moyes’ plans.

Cullen was on the books at the London Stadium for 15 years before joining Vincent Kompany’s Pro League outfit, yet only ever made 10 first-team appearances of which just one came during his final three seasons with the club.

Kompany has been vastly more forthcoming with senior minutes for the Republic of Ireland international, with Cullen starting 18 of his 21 outings in all competitions to date, but he is yet to register a single goal or assist.

Though Kompany has been awash with praise for the Hammers product, having helped the Mauves et Blancs to sit fourth in the Pro League standings and contend for a spot in next season’s Champions League.

“He is never called the Man of the Match, but he is the most popular in the squad,” Kompany told DH Les Sports+ last month. “Those who admire him the most for his work are his teammates. He has only one thing in mind: the team. His own person comes after, in the background. If the team wins, it’s because he did a lot of jobs that the others couldn’t do.

“An anecdote: against Genk, he hit his head and they put a bandage on him. As I know he is of Irish descent and tough as iron, I slapped him on his bandage and said with a laugh: ‘Are you okay? Come on, run then, and stop making excuses.’ The same against Charleroi: he took a big tackle on the ankle, but I knew he would continue, even if his leg was cut in half.”

Should West Ham regret selling Cullen?

Kompany clearly thinks highly of Cullen and so do Anderlecht, with the Belgian club said to value him at three-times what they paid West Ham only five months ago.

But Moyes should not have any regrets over Cullen’s departure, as there were no guarantees his move to Belgium would be a success with him having failed to make the grade at the London Stadium between several loan spells away.

Moyes would have received plenty of reports of his progress while with Charlton Athletic for the past two seasons, but the Westcliff-on-Sea-born talent clearly did not impress the Irons enough over his 66 games with the Addicks.

The Hammers boss was not the only one to pass up on his potential, either, as Moyes handed Cullen six of his 10 West Ham appearances, while Manuel Pellegrini never opted to give the four-cap international a single chance.

Cullen took a punt on himself by moving to Belgium last year over the safety of another spell in the Championship, and it is clearly paying off for him. In the long-run, it could pay off for West Ham a bit more, too, having included a sell-on clause in their deal with Anderlecht.

But, right now, West Ham should have no regret over calling time on their investment in a talent failing to breakthrough, and enjoy what success Moyes is delivering on the pitch.

Leeds: Hay discusses Forsaw injury

Leeds United have been without Adam Forshaw for a very lengthy period and Phil Hay has provided an injury update on the player.

The latest on Forshaw

The journalist for The Athletic was listening to Marcelo Bielsa’s pre-West Ham press conference and said: “A bit on Forshaw too, who Bielsa says is in a positive place but isn’t ready to follow Berardi into the U23s yet. Bielsa not sure when he will be.”

Forshaw is coming to the end of his Leeds career

The midfielder has played only once for the Elland Road side since August 2019 due to a mixture of injuries and him not being favoured by Bielsa.

When he was playing for the club, he received huge praised from former Leeds man Noel Whelan, who said: “Forshaw, I think, was excellent again. He gets on the ball, he shows class.”

But the 29-year-old only made seven league appearances in the 2019/20 season for the Whites, racking up a rating of 6.76 (Whoscored). The midfield position is very strong at the club currently, and one can’t see Forshaw replacing any of the starting eleven any time soon. This combined with the fact that he is still struggling to return from his latest injury suggests that the £2.88m-rated ace will struggle to get back into the Leeds side.

With his contract expiring in the summer of 2022, we might not see him feature in a Leeds shirt again if the club feel like they need to make some money on him in the upcoming transfer window.

Arsenal must sign Norwich’s Max Aarons

Amid suggestions Hector Bellerin could be on his way out of Arsenal this year, Edu could land Mikel Arteta a dream player by signing Norwich City starlet Max Aarons.

According to CBS Sports, PSG are ready to revive last summer’s interest in Bellerin, with the Spaniard himself eager to test himself away from the Emirates.

The report claims that the Ligue 1 giants are not alone in their interest in the right-back however, with Barcelona also said to be keeping an eye. It’s added that “for their part Arsenal have not indicated to the player what their plans are for him as he approaches the final two years of the contract he signed in late 2016.”

And with Bellerin’s long-term future at the Emirates up in the air, Aarons and Brighton flier Tariq Lamptey have been identified as potential replacements for the Spaniard.

When you look at how Aarons has performed back in the Championship this season, you can see why the 21-year-old would fit in so well with the likes of the Gunners’ other young starlets, Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe for instance.

The £18m-rated right-back has scored once and picked up three assists, while crucially, has played the full 90 minutes in every single league game for the Canaries this campaign – the Gunners only have to look at Bellerin’s knee injury, or even the struggles of Kieran Tierney to see what an impressive feat that is.

Speaking earlier this season, Norwich boss Daniel Farke said: “Max is outstanding in many topics. I can’t praise him enough for what he has done since his first appearance. He is always looking to work harder. Never ill, never injured. If the best clubs in the world are interested then maybe there is not that much more space to improve.

“But he knows he can work a bit more on his assists and end product, like in the last game. I think he can be more of an offensive threat for us. You watch some of our games now and the opponents go man-for-man on him. That is crazy for a player who is a full-back but it says a lot about his reputation. He is just a special player and he has an unbelievable future.”

As Farke says, Aarons is a dangerous “threat” going forward, and for a manager like Arteta, who clearly places emphasis on his full-backs to go forward – both Tierney and Bellerin feature in the top six for key passes per game this season for the Gunners – the 21-year-old feels like a perfect fit for the Arsenal boss.

He’s young, forward-thinking and already with plenty of experience, especially given he had a campaign of Premier League football to taste just last season with the Canaries.

Edu could wave goodbye to Bellerin this summer and land a dream player for Arteta by landing Aarons.

Newcastle United’s Ciaran Clark was Steve Bruce’s true saving grace vs Leicester

Ciaran Clark was Steve Bruce’s true saving grace as Newcastle United lost 2-1 at home to Leicester City on Sunday.

Wonderful strikes from Foxes midfield maestros James Maddison and Youri Tielemans did the damage for Brendan Rodgers’ side, as they claimed a seventh away win of the Premier League season.

No team has been as successful or better away from home this term than the King Power Stadium natives, who emerged triumphant on Tyneside, despite Clark producing a dominant display on the left of Bruce’s three-strong centre-half line.

Clark, earning his eighth start of the top-flight campaign, started well to offer United hope of claiming a result when he cleared the danger in the fourth-minute after Harvey Barnes was easily able to stroll past Sean Longstaff, on a day for the midfielder to forget.

The £4.5m-rated centre-back continued to provide an important presence in front of Karl Darlow’s goal with key tackles in the first half, and almost struck his second goal of the season after meeting a Matt Ritchie corner midway through the second period.

Newcastle nearly salvaged a point in the closing stages as their winless run stretched to six games across all competitions, after Andy Carroll lashed home a perfectly timed volley eight minutes from time for his first Toon goal since 2010.

It was ultimately not to be despite an improved overall second-half performance from the Magpies, who ended the weekend eight points clear of the bottom three but having played a game more than Scott Parker’s relegation-threatened Fulham in 18th place.

Clark was by far Bruce’s true saving grace against Leicester during the Foxes’ visit to St. James’ Park on Sunday, despite conceding twice as Newcastle tasted a seventh defeat of the season.

The 31-year-old recorded a joint-game high three successful tackles with fellow Toon defenders Ritchie and DeAndre Yedlin, having won each of his attempted efforts, along with one interception and success in a titanic game-high seven aerial duels, per WhoScored.

Fabian Schar and Federico Fernandez each only attempted a single aerial duel against the King Power Stadium natives, while also registering fewer touches of the ball than Clark whose 67 touches was a team-high tally.

No Newcastle player offered a higher number of accurate (33) or attempted (47) passes than Clark, either, with the Harrow-born enforcer relied on to play out from the back.

Clark further won four of his five ground duels, never committed a foul and attempted one dribble, per SofaScore, to stand out on a day the Toon offered little in attack.

AND in other news, Newcastle United could move to sign a £14.5m-rated gem who can “make things happen” in January.

Exclusive: Pundit drops hint on next Sheffield Wednesday manager

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, former EFL marksman Dean Windass has revealed what he’s heard surrounding the vacant managerial job at Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls are looking for their fifth boss in three years following the shock sacking of Tony Pulis two weeks ago.

Thai chairman Dejphon Chansiri pulled the trigger on the veteran Welshman after just one win in ten matches and has since left coach Neil Thompson in caretaker charge.

According to Windass, the Wednesday owner is set to go down the foreign route this time around.

In the last few days, several names have been linked with the role, ranging from the Paul Cook to former Bayern Munich midfielder Thorsten Fink.

Other names mentioned include ex-Anderlecht boss Rene Weiler, the recently-sacked Joey Barton, Jose Morais and Gus Poyet.

Speaking to FFC, Windass said:

“I don’t know who’s going to get the job.

“I’ve heard on the grapevine – not by Josh – that they are going to go down the foreign market after Tony.

“So only time will tell when we hear. I’m sure we’ll know before the players will know.”

Under Chansiri, the Owls have appointed two managers from outside the UK, both turned out to be either side of the performance spectrum.

Carlos Carvalhal guided the Yorkshire giants to the playoffs in back-to-back seasons, something they’ve not achieved since, whilst Jos Luhukay only lasted 48 games in 2018.

Wednesday have not achieved a better finish than 12th since the 2016/17 campaign and currently face an uphill battle to survive in the division, though Thompson now has them unbeaten in all three matches under his stewardship.

Heading into this weekend’s FA Cup clash with Exeter City, the Owls are only outside of the drop zone on goal difference with two teams below them holding at least one game in hand.
