Leeds: Phil Hay provides Aaronson update

Phil Hay has provided an important update regarding Leeds United’s pursuit of Brenden Aaronson, admitting that a second bid from the club is yet to be accepted by Red Bull Salzburg.

The Lowdown: Bids made for Aaronson

The Whites are clearly interested in acquiring the American’s signature this month, with two bids reportedly already made in recent days and Victor Orta an admirer of the 21-year-old, identifying him as a player who could develop under Marcelo Bielsa at Elland Road.

Leeds are thought to have tabled an offer of £20m for Aaronson as they look to make a significant midfield addition in the January transfer window.

It feels like a saga which could go to the wire, though, especially after a fresh update from a reliable source.

The Latest: Hay gives Aaronson transfer update

Speaking in a Q&A for The Athletic on Saturday, Hay admitted there are no signs that Leeds’ second bid will be accepted by Salzburg.

Revealing the latest on the Whites’ pursuit of the 21-year-old, the journalist outlined: “Sounded likely to me that Salzburg would turn the second bid down too. Haven’t been told that it’s been formally rejected but as we stand, it hasn’t been accepted.”

The Verdict: Salzburg holding firm

Salzburg are clearly desperate to keep hold of Aaronson this month, which is no great surprise considering that he has already scored 10 goals and registered 12 assists in 51 appearances for the club at such a young age.

Leeds may need to increase their offer further in order to get their man, at which point it could be tricky if a lack of funds are available for new additions.

Patience may be required in the coming days, but if the Whites can snap up Aaronson, he could be an ideal signing at a time when midfield reinforcements are essential with Kalvin Phillips out injured.

Celtic: Journalist makes Hannes Wolf claim

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has addressed Celtic’s interest in Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Hannes Wolf, Give Me Sport report.

The Lowdown: McGree move breaks down

The Hoops have already brought in four players during the January transfer window, two of which have been midfielders in Reo Hatate and Yosuke Ideguchi.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy/” title=”Celtic updates!! (Copy)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Ange Postecoglou seemingly wants more, though, as it appeared as if he would be getting another in Riley McGree. However, talks broke down over personal terms, with the Aussie now set to join Championship side Middlesbrough.

Celtic were linked with a move for Wolf prior to the saga with McGree, and O’Rourke has been having his say on a possible swoop for the Austrian.

The Latest: O’Rourke’s comments

O’Rourke was talking to Give Me Sport regarding Celtic’s interest in Wolf, claiming that Postecoglou is a ‘big admirer’ of the midfielder.

“Wolf has been a long-term target for Celtic.

“Ange Postecoglou is reportedly a big admirer of him and it seems he doesn’t really figure in Monchengladbach’s plans going forward.”

The Verdict: Loan move?

The £12.5m-rated attacking midfielder can also play on either wing, so he could be a shrewd addition with David Turnbull ruled out for two months through injury.

A loan deal is thought to be possible for Wolf, and if the Hoops can include an option to buy within a temporary transfer, it would give them the power in the summer.

Wolf has featured just once in Monchengladbach’s last 12 Bundesliga fixtures, however, should he replicate his 2018/19 form with RB Salzburg where he contributed to 15 goals in 22 games, it could be a wise move with the versatile midfielder still just 22 years of age.

Ireland's team performance scuppers Scotland

Trent Johnston ripped through the top order as Scotland collapsed to 99 all out in Dubai•International Cricket Council

Ireland completed a 37-run win to ensure their progress to the Super Fours stage after Scotland collapsed on either side of a threatening partnership between Kyle Coetzer and Gordon Drummond. A team performance with both bat and ball was behind Ireland’s victory, as no batsman made more than 19 and the wickets were shared around by the bowlers.Despite their defeats to USA and Afghanistan, Scotland still had an outside chance of sneaking through to the next stage of the tournament coming in to this game. Had they won today, they would have drawn level on two points with Ireland and USA. With Ireland scoring 136 for 7, Scotland had to chase down the runs in 14.5 overs or less in order to overtake Ireland’s net run rate.Their innings lay in tatters within the first two overs, however, as Peter Connell and Trent Johnston ripped through the top order to reduce Scotland to 6 for 4. After Connell got rid of Fraser Watts and Gavin Hamilton in consecutive balls, Andre Botha held onto two chances at a well-positioned short third man off Johnston as Richie Berrington and Neil McCallum slashed wildly at deliveries outside off stump. Two overs later Jan Stander mistimed an attempted heave over midwicket and Scotland had collapsed to 12 for 5.Then came the fightback, as Coetzer and Drummond saw off the opening bowlers and began to accumulate runs steadily. With a win in under 15 overs firmly out of the question after the top order crumbled, the pair had only pride to play for, and their partnership was just beginning to look ominous when Coetzer popped a low full toss to a backtracking William Porterfield at cover to depart for 43.Simon Smith’s run out in the 17th over broke Scotland’s resistance. George Dockrell dismissed Ross Lyons and Drummond in his second over, and Kevin O’Brien wrapped up the match with a well-directed yorker to disturb Dewald Nel’s stumps.Apart from Alex Cusack, who was trapped lbw by Majid Haq for two, every one of Ireland’s top nine made a start with the bat to contribute to what turned out to be a match-winning total. Johnston, O’Brien and John Mooney all chipped in with 10, while Andrew White, Gary Wilson, Niall O’Brien, Porterfield and Botha all made it into the teens. Haq and Coetzer were Scotland’s most successful bowlers, with two wickets apiece.Ireland had to win this game to be sure of a spot in the Super Fours, and will take some confidence in the way they rallied as a team in this game as they progress to the next round.

Celtic: Ewan Henderson headed for Hibs

Celtic midfielder Ewan Henderson is seemingly set to leave Parkhead for Hibernian during the January transfer window.

The lowdown

Celtic have told Henderson he’s free to go this month, rather than waiting until the summer when his £3,300-per-week contract expires.

Should he join Hibernian, he would link up not only with former Celtic coach Shaun Maloney, but also with his brother Liam.

21-year-old Henderson has made 11 appearances in total for Celtic but only one of those has come this season, and that was in the Europa League dead-rubber against Real Betis.

The latest

Patrick McPartlin of the Edinburgh Evening News reports that ‘progress [is] being made’ in Hibs’ pursuit of Henderson.

Clubs in Italy are also said to be interested, but Hibs are leading the race and are hopeful of wrapping up the move in advance of the Scottish Premiership’s resumption on 17 January.

The verdict

Ange Postecoglou doesn’t look to have much use for Henderson. Prior to the winter break, he included him in his matchday squad on just six occasions.

It’s hard to argue he’s a valued member of the roster, and so it’s probably best for both parties that he moves on.

Henderson did grab his opportunity when it was presented to him, netting what Pat Bonner called an ‘incredible’ goal against Betis, but it’s clearly made little difference to his situation in Glasgow, and the move feels like a win win all-round.

Celtic: Yosuke Ideguchi agreement reached

Celtic have agreed a deal with Gamba Osaka for midfielder Yosuke Ideguchi, Yahoo Japan report.

The Lowdown: Busy January in store…

The Hoops look set to have a busy start to the New Year, with Ange Postecoglou after two more Japanese additions alongside Ideguchi in Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-18/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

There could also be a number of outgoings, with the likes of Albian Ajeti and Vasilis Barkas linked with Parkhead exits.

It appears as if Celtic are making good progress ahead of the transfer window opening in regards to Ideguchi, who has been described as a player who likes to ‘give it out’.

The Latest: Ideguchi deal reached

Yahoo Japan shared a story on Thursday, revealing a fee of over €1m has been reached for the 25-year-old.

They claim that there are still visa issues to resolve, however, Ideguchi is set to fly to Scotland before the end of the year for a medical.

The Verdict: Good news…

Celtic need all the January reinforcements they can get with the number of injuries they are picking up.

Ajeti and Furuhashi were the latest to pick up knocks on Thursday evening, leaving Postecoglou with limited options in attack.

Ideguchi won’t be able to provide cover in attack, however, he’ll be another body in midfield, with Callum McGregor, Tom Rogic and David Turnbull relied on heavily by Postecoglou so far.

Hopefully, a transfer will be wrapped up quickly in the New Year, and who knows, should that be the case, Ideguchi could be around for the Glasgow derby on January 2.

NUFC dealt potential DoF setback

Since the new owners at Newcastle United took charge of the Tyneside club back in early October, the Toon have only managed to win one league game.

Taking the focus away from the players on the pitch and how the team are getting on, with it being well documented in recent weeks that Newcastle are looking to appoint a director of football to take the club forward off the pitch, it seems as though they could be set to miss out on one of their potential candidates.

What’s the latest?

It was recently reported by Newcastle journalist Craig Hope in the Daily Mail that ex-Swansea recruitment chief Andy Scott has been mentioned with the role

However, in a fresh twist, a different report from Football Insider has now claimed that Scott has agreed a deal to join Championship club Middlesbrough instead.

He left his role at Swansea only a few days ago after being appointed back in July 2019 by ex-Swansea chairman Trevor Birch, around a month after Steve Cooper was named head coach at the Championship club.

Huge blow

If this report from Football Insider is true and Scott does end up joining Middlesbrough in the coming days, this surely won’t be good news for Amanda Staveley and co as one of their targets will have to be chalked off the list and therefore narrow down their remaining options for the role.

Moving forward, it would be in the club’s best interest if they secured a director as soon as possible but make sure they get the right person in to give them the best chance of not only potentially securing the best possible incoming transfers in January but to make sure the club is running how it should be and how the owners want it to be run for the foreseeable future under their reign.

It’s a shame because Scott would have been an impressive capture by the Magpies. He helped steer the Swans to consecutive play-off finishes while acquiring the likes of Ryan Manning and Jamal Lowe. Per SofaScore, the former ranks as the club’s seventh-best performer this term while Lowe bagged 14 in his debut campaign in Wales.

Thus, he evidently has a keen eye for spotting talent and surely could have brought a great deal of expertise to St James’ Park. In turn, Staveley will quite understandably be gutted if he moves elsewhere, especially to a rival in the northeast.

Nonetheless, they will have to find somebody else and with the Toon managing to concede 30 league goals in their 15 games so far this season, they need to identify a candidate quickly to fix their vast issues.

Rangers injury news on Roofe & Balogun

Glasgow Rangers have been dealt a double injury blow before their game at Livingston in the Premiership on Sunday.

The Lowdown: Key players

Kemar Roofe and Leon Balogun have both emerged as key players for the Gers so far this season, with both making 18 appearances in total over all competitions.

Roofe has also managed to score nine goals, at a ratio of a goal every two games, so losing him for a prolonged period of time will no doubt be a blow for Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

The Latest: Both out

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match tomorrow, the Rangers boss revealed that both Roofe and Balogun ‘will not be ready’ to play.

Of course, they were both absent from their 2-0 win at home to Sparta Prague in the Europa League on Thursday night, and now they are going to miss another vital match in the Premiership.

The Verdict: Blow

It certainly is a blow for Van Bronckhorst to be missing two key players from his squad ahead of the trip to Livingston.

With Celtic four points behind and hot on their tails, this is simply a game where the Gers must take all three points in order to keep their challengers at bay.

Dubbed ‘exceptional’ by former Aberdeen striker Noel Whelan back in April, Roofe’s eye for a goal is a big miss, while Balogun has averaged the most tackles (1.8) and interceptions (1.4) out of his teammates per match in the Premiership so far this season  (WhoScored).

Nonetheless, Van Bronckhorst will now have to find a way to win without them tomorrow.
