Allan, Arias & Traore: How Everton could lineup vs Spurs on September 12th

Everton will face Tottenham Hotspur on the opening day of the 2020/21 Premier League season next month, but what sort of side could Carlo Ancelotti select in north London?

The Toffees are yet to complete any form of transfer business with a little over three weeks remaining before the start of the new campaign.

But they’ve been linked to a plethora of names, many of which would improve the Merseysiders tenfold.

Here’s our predicted XI for that opening game…

Despite interest in several shot-stoppers, Jordan Pickford will surely keep his place between the sticks whilst Lucas Digne, Mason Holgate and Michael Keane are all in line to start against Spurs.

Although, one change could come at right-back with Marcel Brands clinching his old PSV ace Santiago Arias, who the Daily Mail claim is in ‘advanced talks’ over a move to Goodison Park. The 28-year-old gets the nod over Seamus Coleman.

Whilst in midfield, Ancelotti finally lands his man with Napoli powerhouse Allan coming in to upgrade the engine room. He’s likely to cost around £30m according to the BBC.

He could be joined by another central option in the form of relegated Watford star Abdoulaye Doucoure.

They may partner Andre Gomes in a three-man midfield.

Young sensation Anthony Gordon may well have a breakthrough year in Merseyside this season, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see his Italian boss give him the nod over the likes of Alex Iwobi and Bernard.

But he could be joined by a new addition on the other flank in former Chelsea flop Bertrand Traore.

It means Richarlison is moved up into the attack on his own, at the expense of Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

AND in other news, Everton target veteran who could provide healthy competition in goal…

Chelsea: Petr Cech could recreate Timo Werner magic with Marc-Andre ter Stegen move

Chelsea are hoping that they can recruit a replacement for goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga this summer, who has fallen short of the mark between the sticks.

One man whose name continues to crop up is Marc-Andre ter Stegen and he joins the likes of Nick Pope and Jan Oblak as serious transfer targets. According to ESPN, the Blues are battling Inter Milan for the Barcelona man’s signature and hope that Petr Cech can help aid a move for the star.

Whilst Frank Lampard’s side have impressed in front of goal, they have been poor at keeping shots out at the other end, scoring 69 league goals in 2019/20 but conceding 54.

Having already signed Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, Chelsea look well-stacked up front as they head into the new season. However, they must now shift focus onto their defensive problems and how they can plug the holes that have leaked an alarming amount of goals in recent months.

Lampard has made it clear that Kepa is no longer part of his plans moving forward and a replacement must be a priority. Ter Stegen would certainly make a statement if he were to join Stamford Bridge, as he boasts one Champions League crown and four La Liga titles with Barcelona (via Transfermarkt). The Germany international is currently valued at £64.8m.

Fellow goalkeeper and former Chelsea player Cech has played a big part in Lampard’s business this summer. ESPN revealed that he was integral in their quiet yet effective swoop for Werner after they snatched him from under Liverpool’s noses. The 38-year-old could again be called upon to work his magic and coax Ter Stegen away from Camp Nou.

Cech has already proved that his role as the west London club’s technical and performance advisor is one in which he is doing well. A deal for Kai Havertz is all but over the line and now he needs to up his charm and try to lure in one of the world’s most valuable goalkeepers.

Should the Czech Republic native succeed in this, Chelsea will boast a very frightening squad next season.

Matty Longstaff: Leeds target fits the Marcelo Bielsa mould

Leeds United could be making a huge mistake if reports are to be believed this week…

What’s the word?

Earlier in August, the Telegraph’s Mike McGrath linked the Yorkshire giants with a swoop for free-agent Matty Longstaff with his future at Newcastle United still very much in the air.

There have since been fresh developments, as per the Daily Mail, claiming that the Whites have opted against a move for the 20-year-old midfielder.

It’s also thought that the Geordie graduate has offers on the table from Watford-owned Serie A side Udinese, Sheffield United and of course, the Magpies themselves.

Fits the Bielsa mould

This has all the hallmarks of being a typical Marcelo Bielsa Leeds signing, so perhaps it’s quite the surprise to read that they have reportedly gone against signing the young box-to-box maestro.

First of all, he wouldn’t cost Andrea Radrizzani a penny aside from potential compensation and his wages, but he’d offer amazing resale value on a freebie.

Also at just 20 years of age, he can be coached into a tremendous player by one of the most respected managers in the game, the Argentine himself.

Longstaff emerged as one for the future when he fired home a thunderbolt against Manchester United on debut – he earned high praise indeed with Gary Neville comparing him to David Beckham whilst Martin Keown suggested that he’s “like a Paul Scholes” to MOTD2.

Steve Bruce is desperate to keep him at the northeast club after handing him his Magpies debut having spotted his “excellent” credentials during pre-season.

It remains to be seen if United will go back in for the young midfielder, but they could well be wise to given they’d be getting a £4.5m-rated player on the cheap

AND in other news, Leeds could land their own N’Golo Kante…

Leeds’ Mark Viduka swoop in 2000 a superb piece of business

Talk about getting value for money.

Part of the hugely memorable Leeds side in the early 2000s, Mark Viduka carved out an impressive career at Elland Road, and will surely go down as one of the club’s greatest ever pieces of business in the transfer market.

The Australian powerhouse signed for the Whites in a £6m deal in the summer of 2000 after it initially looked doubtful that the move would go through. Reports at the time claimed that the deal was in jeopardy following his initial work permit application being rejected by the Department for Education and Employment, but in the end, then Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale got his man.

The Greatest Bargains in Premier League history – How much did they cost?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

And what an excellent career Viduka enjoyed. In the 166 games that he played for the club, he scored a mammoth 72 times, and it was a four-year stay full of great memories both on an individual and team level too.

He was part of the side that reached the Champions League semi-finals and finished fourth in the Premier League, whilst his most memorable contribution, and arguably the game in which he will always be remembered by Leeds fans for, is his four-goal salvo in a 4-3 win over Liverpool.

All in all, Viduka’s goals means that he cost the Whites just £83.3k for every time he found the back of the net, and with Leeds fans now tearing their hair out at seeing Patrick Bamford toil in front of goal, it just puts into perspective how good the former was.

Ridsdale could quite easily have given up on signing Viduka once the first work permit was rejected, but he stuck to his guns, and kept faith in trying to get the Australian in. And all his hard work in doing so paid off big-time, with the striker leading the line with aplomb at Elland Road.

It may be two decades on, but the signing of Viduka will still live long in the memory of the most ardent of Leeds fans.

Meanwhile, Phil Hay has revealed Leeds’ asking price for this man.

Sunderland pair receive backing from Chris Sutton after show of ill-discipline

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Aiden McGeady and Chris Maguire have come under significant criticism after being caught eating McDonald’s post-match, but Chris Sutton has taken the opposite viewpoint.

What did he say?

Sutton isn’t usually afraid to voice an alternative opinion on matters and his defence of the Sunderland pair is a fair one to make, though the recent events regarding McGeady suggest there is an underlying issue regarding his attitude.

He raises a good point in relation to the Irishman, however, suggesting he has a successful career to boast of and therefore hasn’t reached the level he has in football without adhering to a disciplined diet and mindset.

However, he is neglecting the fact that their behaviour is a little suspect given Sunderland’s predicament, particularly as the incident happened after yet another loss – their seventh in ten games.

Sutton took to Twitter, stating:

Right mindset

Sutton is fair to suggest footballers should be given the freedom to make their own decisions and eat what they want, but if Phil Parkinson is to turn around a sinking ship then he needs all his players on board.

With squad morale likely at a low point due to the endless poor results, it is tough for Parkinson to build team spirit, and that means the only way results are likely to turn around is if everyone is pulling in the right direction.

Incidents like two key players not travelling back with the squad and eating fast food is a show of disobedience to Parkinson and undermines the work he is trying to do. It shows a distinct lack of togetherness.

As a result, Sutton is rather uninformed in giving his opinion and should instead be considering the other circumstances involved, such as the fact that the performances of both players have tailed off significantly, with Maguire, in particular, bearing the brunt of fan criticism.

They should, therefore, be doing all they can to help their new boss and get Sunderland moving back in the right direction, rather than tarnishing the club through negative actions.

The actions of McGeady may have contributed to him being made available for transfer, but fans are backing him over the manager in that development.

Birmingham fans left delighted with Jefferson Montero’s brief cameo v Fulham

It wasn’t a successful comeback, but it was certainly enough to get fans excited.

Jefferson Montero made only his third appearance for the Blues since his move from Swansea City in the summer on Saturday, having been out for some time with a thigh injury.

Whilst he didn’t manage to get on the scoresheet or register an assist (although he did come close with one cross) it gave Blues fan a little glimpse of what they’re missing.

We’ve spoken on FFC before about how crucial someone like Montero can be for Birmingham, so hopefully, he can get back to full strength sooner rather than later.

With two defeats in the last two games, they could really use that little creative spark that he brings.

So when the 30-year-old Colombian posted a video of his limited contributions from the weekend, it was enough to get fans on tenterhooks about what they might be seeing at St Andrew’s later in the season.

Here’s the best of the reaction.

Is this a taste of things yet to come?

AC Milan would finally get their Cutrone replacement with Everton’s Moise Kean

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Patrick Cutrone’s transfer to Wolverhampton Wanderers may have hit AC Milan hard. But according to Calciomercato’s recent report, they might be going back for Everton’s Moise Kean soon and the 19-year-old could potentially fill Cutrone’s void perfectly.

What’s the word, then?

Kean to Milan is not really a new story.

According to the same source, the Rossoneri already tried snatching the young centre-forward away from the Toffees last summer, and they are willing to give it a second shot in the near future.

Watch Italian Football Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

Everton had to pay a reported sum of £23.5m to get the talent from Juventus but his spell in the Premier League is not really going according to plan.

For that reason, a move to more familiar waters could benefit the player and looking at their squad, Milan seem like the best possible destination for his development.

A win-win scenario

Cutrone was a big figure back when he was donning the Rossoneri shirt.

Of course, a huge part of his contribution stemmed from his goals as the now 21-year-old centre-forward managed to bag 27 goals and assist further seven in the process.

But he also had that fire about him and the desire to defend the colours of Milan and do it with pride. Maybe it was his youthful ambition or just the love for the club, but once he was gone for the Premier League the Italians lost more than just a goalscorer.

And this brings us back to Kean – a youngster that emerged to the scene while actually playing in Serie A, tallying eight goals in 21 games for Juventus and also 12 goals in 20 games for their Primavera squad.

For one reason or the other, his spell with Everton hasn’t really worked out yet as he has no goals and just one assist under his belt in 11 appearances to date.

A move back to Italy – a league and the country he knows so well – and to a team that can give a young player his much-deserved chance would very much be a win-win scenario.

Milan, who have only scored 11 goals in 12 games this campaign in Serie A, would get a young and prolific goal-scorer and someone who would finally replace Cutrone, and Kean would get his second chance that he’s so desperate for.

By all means, this looks like a match made in heaven.
