Nuno fumes over Spurs’ international break

Tottenham Hotspur journalist Alasdair Gold has stated that Nuno Espirito Santo was “really unhappy” with the events which occurred involving the club during the international break.

The Lowdown: South American problems

Prior to the recent break, Spurs and Nuno made a perfect start to life together with three wins in three to top the Premier League table.

However, due to Argentina and Colombia being on England’s red list for travel, Cristian Romero, Giovani Lo Celso and Davinson Sanchez all missed the Crystal Palace defeat at the weekend after travelling to South America against their club’s wishes.

Spurs also had to do without the injured Son Heung-min and Steven Bergwijn for the trip to Selhurst Park, and Nuno was not happy with the events of the last fortnight.

The Latest: Nuno fumes over events of international break

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Gold discussed the feeling amongst the Spurs head coach about the recent events involving those players.

The journalist said of Nuno: “I understand he’s been really unhappy with everything that happened over the international break, not just the mess with the players who are now stuck in Croatia, the South Americans. But also the injuries the players have come back with.”

The 47-year-old was forced to start Harry Winks and Lucas Moura at Selhurst Park due to the absences of others, and missing a number of key players cost them as goals from Wilfried Zaha and Odsonne Edouard (two) earned Palace all three points.

The Verdict: Wake-up call

It is fair to say that the Palace defeat is an early-season wake-up call for Spurs and Nuno after such an impressive start to the campaign, a result which should bring a few individuals back down to earth.

With Rennes, Chelsea, Wolves and Arsenal all coming up in the next two weeks, the tough tests keep coming for Tottenham.

Saturday’s defeat has seen Spurs drop to sixth after Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Brighton all won over the weekend, and a poor run this month could really put a damper on the start to the new reign at the club.

Nuno’s unhappiness over the events of the international break is understandable and he is right to be unhappy, but he still has a relatively good squad to choose from going forward and they will be hoping to return to winning ways in midweek before Sunday’s all-London clash with Chelsea.

Pundit suggests Rafa could get the best out of Iwobi at Everton

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer believes Rafael Benitez could be the manager to get the best out of Alex Iwobi at Everton.

Iwobi joined Everton for big money after signing from Arsenal in a £34m deal back in 2019.

However, the 25-year-old has not quite lived up to that price tag, often finding himself in and out the team while not having the best goal record (as per WhoScored).

According to the Liverpool Echo, though, Benitez has been impressed with what he has seen from Iwobi in training and is eager to help him transfer that to Goodison Park and other Premier League grounds.

And Palmer thinks the Spaniard is the manager to help the Nigeria international to do just that.

“You go to a club like Everton, which is a completely different style of play to the way that Arsenal have played and education, but by now you’d think he would understand the way that Everton play and what he’d be required to do,” the ex-Leeds United player said.

“He is a pacey winger, so let’s see. Rafael is a very, very good coach – we all know that – so maybe he can get the best out of him.”

Getting in and staying in that Everton starting XI is not going to be easy, though, with recent goalscorers Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend bang in form.

QPR confirm Andre Gray signing

Queens Park Rangers have confirmed the arrival of Andre Gray at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.

What’s the latest?

In a statement posted on the QPR website, the club officially announced the arrival of the Watford centre-forward on a season-long loan deal, with the 30-year-old becoming the Championship side’s 10th signing of the summer transfer window.

In reaction to the striker’s arrival, Mark Warburton said: “I am absolutely delighted we have been able to bring Andre in. I know him very well, he is a very good character around the place and he will fit in very well [with] the group.

“He has pace and power, he knows the division, he has a fantastic work ethic, an eye for goal and is a real athlete. I also think Andre has a point to prove and I very much hope he does that here with us.”

Warburton over the moon

It is clear to see why Warburton is over the moon with the signing of Gray, as the centre-forward very much looks to have put the cherry on the cake on what has been a remarkable transfer window for QPR, with the club sealing the arrivals of Jordan Archer, Jordy De Wijs, Jimmy Dunne, Moses Odubajo, Sam McCallum, Sam Field, Stefan Johansen, Andre Dozzell and Charlie Austin.

Indeed, it can be argued that each one of these signings improved the club, be that as an upgrade on the 58-year-old manager’s previous options in a particular position, or simply adding further depth to an area of the pitch.

And, considering Warburton’s history of working with Gray in the past, with the forward scoring 17 Championship goals for Brentford back in the club’s 2014/15 campaign, a season in which the Bees reached the play-off final, his arrival at QPR certainly appears to provide the Rs’ own promotion hopes with a significant boost – something which already looked rather healthy after the west London side’s unbeaten start to the 2021/22 season.

Newcastle journalist makes Joelinton claim ahead of new season

Newcastle United journalist Liam Kennedy believes that the club are happy with Joelinton after his adaptation to life in England.

The striker has struggled at times during his time with the Magpies and has not exactly been a prolific presence up front.

The Brazilian made 31 appearances in the Premier League last season and scored just four goals, while providing two assists.

It remains to be seen how many minutes the 24-year-old will have this term, after Callum Wilson was signed from Bournemouth last summer.

But Kennedy believes that the club are confident he has the ability to provide proper back-up to Wilson this season, after showing signs of improvement in the back-end of the season.

He said: “Joelinton is a player who is starting to get used to the physical aspect of the English game. And I think from March onwards last year, we actually started to see a player where you’d say ‘he can add value to the team’, so I think they’re okay with having him as a stand-in.”

Joelinton has scored a total of 10 goals in 80 games for the club, and has never hit double figures in a single campaign, while also laying on seven assists.

Steve Bruce’s side begin their season against West Ham United this weekend.

Badrinath stars in Indian win

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

Praveen Kumar and Piyush Chawla shared five wickets to restrict New Zealand to a below-par 167 before S Badrinath hit a polished half-century to ease India A to a five-wicket win. It wasn’t a spectacular chase but the Indians, led by the composed Badrinath, did enough to get past the line, earning a bonus point in the process. With this win all three teams stand equal on four points after the first round of matches. The next round of games will be played in Chennai from September 21.Badrinath started off a touch nervous – understandably, after his failure in the three-day game against Australia A and in the first game of this series – and was hit on the helmet early on by a bouncer from Mark Gillespie. But he settled down with the help of singles before exploding with some breathtaking shots. He took his revenge against Gillespie with a feisty on-the-up punch and a gorgeous extra-cover drive and lofted the offspinners over their heads.Dinesh Kartik rotated the strike well in an important 68-run partnership with Badrinath but fell against the run of play, edging an intended cut shot before the gum-chewing Yusuf Pathan hastened the end with some big hits. However, India’s top order continued to struggle for the second game in a row.Robin Uthappa, who played a delightful pull and a flamboyant flick over midwicket, got carried away and fell, pulling a full-length delivery straight to mid-on; Swapnil Asnodkar didn’t offer a shot to a ball on the off-stump line; Suresh Raina fell to his urge to hit on the up and was taken spectacularly by a diving Martin Guptill at point and Rohit Sharma failed yet again, flicking a slower one tamely to midwicket. It was a typical Rohit innings: a lovely cover drive to keep the purists happy before the characteristic “lazy dismissal”.New Zealand’s start was similarly ominous. Bradley Watling was run out and Guptill fished outside off before James Marshall, the captain today, chipped one straight to short midwicket to leave New Zealand wobbling at 8 for 3. However, Peter Fulton and Neil Broom went about the recovery job in a calculated manner. While Fulton took care of Dhawal Kulkarni, Broom picked runs off Chawla. It was an interesting tussle between Kulkarni and Fulton. Fulton was in trouble against the short-of-length cutters, twice edging just short of Uthappa at slip before he decided to force the bowler to alter his length by walking down the track. When the length shortened he pulled, when it was full he lofted it over the bowler and when the line changed to well outside off, he creamed through the covers.Meanwhile, Broom sussed out pretty quickly that Chawla bowls more googlies than legbreaks and hit him with the turn over the on-side field. He took the left leg out of the way to ping the cowcorner and long-on regions. At 97 for 3, things were looking good for New Zealand when disaster struck. Broom was caught short of the crease by a powerful throw by Raina from deep square leg, Fulton fell rather softly, flicking straight to midwicket and the lower order struggled against Chawla’s googlies. And 167 was never going to be enough on a track that held no demons.

Porto submit fresh bid for Alfredo Morelos

Rangers fans look set for some more bad news this week, with reports suggesting that Porto will submit an improved bid for Alfredo Morelos as the Colombian’s exit certainly seems on the cards following Steven Gerrard’s side’s failure to reach the Champions League group stage.

Whilst the 25-year-old scored the goal to level the tie on aggregate at Ibrox on Tuesday night, his work was undone by a shaky defence which shipped two goals in quick succession to hand ten-man Malmo a win which ended the Gers’ hopes in the Champions League for this season.

As a result, it seems likely that Rangers will have to cash in on some of their key players this summer to balance the books, and Morelos is one of the prime candidates to leave, with Porto having been heavily linked with El Bufalo throughout the summer.

What’s the word?

According to Portuguese news outlet A Bola (via Daily Record), the Portuguese giants are likely to act following Rangers’ defeat against Malmo at Ibrox and are confident of securing a deal for the forward.

The report claims that Porto manager Sergio Conceicao is keen on signing the striker and sees him as the ideal fit for his side, so it seems increasingly likely that Morelos will leave Ibrox before the transfer window shuts.

The Colombia international has been a huge hit at Rangers since joining from HJK Helsinki in 2017, contributing 94 goals and 43 assists in 184 appearances for the Teddy Bears, establishing himself as the Gers’ top scorer in European competitions.

Gerrard was full of praise for Morelos in 2019 after he scored a brace, coincidentally against Porto in the Europa League, saying: “Buff’s composure and finish was world-class. I think tonight you see the importance he is to me, to Rangers.

“It’s the reason why there’s so much fuss and so much talk about Alfredo and why he’s linked with so many teams – because he’s an outstanding footballer.

“Tonight again he showed the reason why we have to keep him here. For us to be successful moving forward, he’s a key component.”

Therefore, Gerrard and Rangers fans will no doubt be devastated if Morelos were to leave Ibrox this summer, but after the embarrassment of Tuesday night’s defeat, the Gers only have themselves to blame if the Colombian moves on.

Palmer: Southampton in big trouble if they can’t replace Ings

In an exclusive interview with The Transfer Tavern, Carlton Palmer has warned that Southampton could be in serious trouble if they cannot replace star striker Danny Ings this summer.

As per The Athletic, Ings is refusing to sign a new contract at St. Mary’s, with his current one set to expire next year.

Meanwhile, The Telegraph claims that Ings is Tottenham’s primary target as new manager Nuno Espirito Santo looks to deploy a two-man attack at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Speaking recently on talkSPORT, Tony Cascarino suggested that Southampton could find themselves in relegation trouble if Ings ends up getting the move he is clearly seeking, and Palmer shares a very similar view.

“If you’re losing 22 goals in the Premier League, you’re in serious trouble, you’re in serious trouble,” the ex-Southampton player said in response to Cascarino’s claim. “Don’t leave your business to the last minute.

“If you’re not going to be able to tie him down to a contract, I’d get him out and get maybe one or two players in that might be able to come up with 10 goals each. That’s what you need to do.”

Ings has scored a total of 34 goals across the last two Premier League seasons, so Southampton would indeed be losing a lot of firepower if he were to leave. If they cannot replace that, yes, it could end up being a long season for the Saints.

Dutch league match disrupted by violent confrontation

Dutch cricket was shocked this weekend by an outbreak of violence at the Premier League match between Jinnah and Hermes DVS

Cricinfo19-Aug-2002Dutch cricket was shocked this weekend by an outbreak of violence at the Premier League match between Jinnah and Hermes DVS. The match was abandoned after fighting broke out between members of the Jinnah team. Reports suggest that knifes were pulled and others were struck with lead pipes. One man, Jinnah secretary Shah Mohammed, was taken to hospital for treatment. The trouble within the club had surfaced last week when Shah Mohammed removed former Jinnah captain Kalil ur Rehman from the Jinnah board. Two warring factions developed within the club, and the Dutch Cricket Assocation were made aware of allegations of death threats being uttered. As a security precaution they decided to shift the venue of the weekend’s match to a “secret” location, and informed police of potential problems. On the morning of the match, the Shah Mohammed followers assembled to play their match against Hermes DVS at the Sparta ground. Meanwhile the other faction arrived at the original venue, Jinnah’s home ground at Abcoude. Learning of the switch of venue they travelled to Sparta to confront the other group. Efforts were made to avoid confrontation but to no avail. The opposition players and umpires were unharmed, but the match was abandoned. The match has been awarded to Hermes DVS, but the fate of the Jinnah club lies with the Dutch Cricket Assocation, who will meet this week. It is likely that Jinnah will lose their premier league status. Next weekend on August 23, the Pakistan Ambassadors Cup is scheduled to be played between Netherlands ‘A’ and a team of Pakistani players, including several from the Jinnah club. This match is now the subject of further concern, as the dispute within the club is far from settled.
