Leeds: Whites linked with Facundo Medina

Leeds United are looking into a deal for RC Lens defender Facundo Medina, according to Homme du Match.

The Lowdown: Medina profiled

Medina is a left-footed centre-back who can also play at left-back and has three caps to his name for Argentina.

He has only been with Lens for 18 months but has already been linked with a move to Manchester United following his impressive start to life in France.

The 22-year-old appears to be at the top of his game with a career-high Transfermarkt valuation of £9m, and it seems as if Medina is another player on Victor Orta’s radar at Elland Road.

The Latest: Leeds set their sights

Homme du Match shared a story on Wednesday and led with a title suggesting that the Whites have set their sights on a move for Medina.

He’s a player who is being closely followed by Leeds, with the report believing that he would fit perfectly into Marcelo Bielsa’s style of play.

The Verdict: Avoid for now?

Although Medina appears to be catching the eye over in France and can play in more than one position, perhaps Leeds need to look at alternative areas if they are to add to their squad in January.

Bielsa has just four senior midfield options at this moment in time, so there’s an argument that another would be needed before bringing in what would be a sixth centre-back.

It could be wise for Leeds to keep monitoring Medina’s progress, and who knows, a move may end up making sense further down the line.

Gerrard targeting priority Villa swoop

Steven Gerrard has identified the number one priority for his Aston Villa squad ahead of the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Sun’s Alan Nixon, who claims that the 41-year-old will be targeting a leading left-back in the winter market, as the manager believes that the current first choice in the position, Matt Targett, is not of the standard required at Villa Park.

The report goes on to state that, although Gerrard’s left-back at Rangers, Borna Barisic, has been linked with a move to the Premier League side, Villa’s scouts are looking at targets in the Premier League and in Europe.

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how poor Targett has been for Villa so far this season, the news that Gerrard has already identified a new left-back as his priority target in the January transfer window is sure to have left Aston Villa fans buzzing.

Indeed, over his 11 Premier League appearances this term, the £15.3m-rated man has helped his side keep just two clean sheets, as well as being dribbled past by an opponent an average of one time per game and losing possession of the ball an average of 16.2 times per fixture.

These returns have seen the defender average a disappointing SofaScore match rating of just 6.72, ranking him as Villa’s 12th-best performer in the top flight of English football.

As such, it is clear to see that, should Gerrard wish to mount a charge towards the top half of the Premier League table this season, the 26-year-old is undoubtedly a player that he will need to upgrade upon in the January transfer window – something that, following the latest reports, it would seem as if the former Liverpool captain is more than prepared to do this winter.

Fartura!

Brenner daria conta do recado? É verdade que o então reserva estava devendo boas atuações. Eram sete jogos e um gol. Entretanto, as coisas mudaram.

West Ham eye EFL beast Dael Fry

West Ham United could now be in the transfer market for a new centre-back this January…

What’s the word?

According to Football League World, the Hammers are now considering a move for Middlesborough colossus Dael Fry when the window reopens in under two months’ time.

It comes less than a week after the east London outfit learned of Angelo Ogbonna’s devastating blow, having sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during their 3-2 win over Liverpool on Sunday.

The extent of the injury is yet to be announced but at worst, the 33-year-old veteran could miss 9-12 months of football, if not more. And considering his age, it would be hard to foresee a long-term return for him under David Moyes.

Moyes now needs him

Therefore, it makes sense for the Irons to target a new defender as the Scotsman now badly needs another man in the role. Fry is an intriguing candidate.

Standing at 6 foot 4, the 24-year-old has been an impressive and consistent option at the Riverside, so it could be time for him to step up into the big time.

Fry currently rates out as Boro’s fifth-best performer (6.93 average rating) and he is among the top three players for aerial duels won (5.2) and clearances (3.1) per game in the Championship, as per WhoScored.

Former Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock highlighted the Englishman’s importance to the side during an interview back in February this year, via the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“You can put people in and think you can do this. But you cannot replace quality like that. And we cannot replace Dael. He is our best centre-half by a mile. We can play around him and if Dael is fit, we have got different people to fit here and there. But we cannot replace Dael. He is the complete player for me.

“He just gives us so much confidence. I am sure Jurgen, when Van Dijk is there, never thinks about the back four because he does it for them. You just have to hope your best players don’t get injured. Whatever level it is.”

Valued at just £6.3m by Transfermarkt, Fry could be a bargain solution to Moyes’ latest injury blow. He won’t be expected to come in and start every week either, with Issa Diop and Craig Dawson ahead of him in the pecking order but in the long-term, it could prove to be just as shrewd a signing.

The Middlesbrough sensation must be seriously considered by West Ham’s head of recruitment, Rob Newman, in the coming months.

West Brom dealt major injury blow

West Bromwich Albion have been dealt a major injury blow ahead of their upcoming Championship fixture.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by the West Brom website, Valerien Ismael confirmed that Grady Diangana will not be available for selection for the trip to Swansea City on Wednesday evening, as the winger is yet to recover from a hamstring injury which saw him ruled out of the 1-0 win over Birmingham City last Friday.

Speaking about the current condition of the 23-year-old, Ismael said: “Grady won’t be available for the game because he only had his first session with the group on Tuesday. It’s too close for him to be able to play. If everything goes correctly then hopefully him being available for Saturday won’t be a problem.”

Meanwhile, the Frenchman also revealed that Alex Mowatt, who was brought off midway through the second half of the Birmingham victory due to a toe injury, will be assessed prior to Wednesday’s fixture.

On the central midfielder’s fitness, the 46-year-old said: “We’ll assess Alex before the game at Swansea. We’re going to keep a close eye on things and how he is before we make a decision on him.”

Ismael will be gutted

While it is undeniable that Diangana has not been in the best form of his career this season, having scored no goals and registered just one assist over his 11 Championship appearances, the absence of the winger for the trip to Swansea will nevertheless have left Ismael gutted. The 23-year-old proved in the Baggies’ promotion-winning campaign back in 2019/20 that he undoubtedly possesses the ability to help fire the club back to the Premier League.

Indeed, over his 30 Championship appearances that season, the £9m-rated forward bagged eight goals, provided six assists and created eight big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.6 shots and making 1.4 key passes per game.

These metrics saw the £36k-per-week man earn a highly impressive seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.06, ranking him as Albion’s third-best performer throughout the campaign in question.

As such, while, as previously mentioned, the former West Ham United winger is yet to hit these heights so far this season, it is abundantly clear that Diangana can win a game in an instant for West Brom, a talent that Ismael will sorely miss on Wednesday night.

Groundsman concerns over 'jelly' pitch

Steve Rouse, Edgbaston’s groundsman, is faced with a familiar pre-Ashes race against time

Cricinfo staff23-Jul-2009Steve Rouse, Edgbaston’s groundsman, is faced with a familiar pre-Ashes race against time, after heavy rain throughout a wet fortnight put back the preparations of the venue’s Test pitch for the second time in four years.”It’s a nightmare,” Rouse told BBC Sport. “Out of the last ten days, there have been two actual dry days, and the wicket is a bit like a jelly.”I’ve got to dry that out between now and next Wednesday, because the wicket has to be ready roughly a day in advance, and the chances of getting that solid three or four inches down, there’s no chance, not with the weather coming in.”Rouse was also left mopping up the puddles back in 2005, when a freakish tornado ripped through Birmingham in the build-up to the second Test, leaving three inches of rainfall in its wake.On that occasion the pitch, which had been four days behind in its preparation time, ended up playing slow, but it nevertheless produced one of the most thrilling finishes in Test history, when England won by two runs on the fourth morning.England have a good record in Birmingham, winning 22 of the 43 Tests staged and losing only eight, with 13 draws. Tickets are still available for the fourth day of the game on August 2, and spectators can also buy non-refundable tickets for the fifth day.

Leeds keeping tabs on Arnaut Danjuma

Leeds United are reportedly showing an interest in Villarreal winger Arnaut Danjuma, sending scouts to watch him in action earlier this week.

The Lowdown: Danjuma impresses against Man United

Danjuma played in his side’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United in the Champions League on Wednesday night, as they lost in the dying seconds at Old Trafford.

Despite the result, the wide man caught the eye for Villarreal, injecting pace and directness as well as providing an assist for Paco Alcacer.

The Latest: Leeds eye up winger

According to Football Insider, Leeds had scouts present at the game, in order to keep an eye on Danjuma’s performance.

A Whites source has claimed that they are ‘monitoring’ the former Bournemouth man, ahead of a potential move for him in the future.

Liverpool are also believed to be keen on signing the 24-year-old, who has scored three times already this season.

The Verdict: Shrewd potential signing

Danjuma could be an excellent buy for Leeds, providing more squad depth and potentially coming in to replace Helder Costa in the long-term, with the Portuguese on loan at Valencia currently.

He scored 17 goals in 31 starts for Bournemouth last season, which shows how prolific he can be, and at 24, his peak years should still be ahead of him.

His youth, pace with the ball and end product suggest he could be the perfect man to come in and compete with the likes of Raphinha, Dan James and Jack Harrison.

Corbeanu struggling away from Wolves

With Wolves having only managed to score five goals in seven Premier League games so far this season, it’s safe to say their current crop of attacking players are not firing on all cylinders at the moment.

One attacking player that is currently out on loan from the Midlands club is Wolves U23 striker Theo Corbeanu, who is currently spending the season at League One club Sheffield Wednesday.

Since making his move to the Yorkshire club, the 19-year-old, who is currently valued at £900k according to Transfermarkt, has made just three appearances for the Owls in League One, coming off the substitutes bench on all three occasions.

On three other occasions, Corbeanu has been an unused substitute in the league for Wednesday and hasn’t even been in the squad for four other games so far this season.

Unfortunately for the player, the three league games that Corbeanu has made an appearance in have seen the club drop points on each occasion.

Taking all of this into account, it’s safe to say that Corbeanu hasn’t exactly been a regular figure for Darren Moore side and hasn’t been able to make a massive impact when he has been called upon in the league.

However, one positive for the player came during the club’s midweek win over League Two side Mansfield Town in the Papa John’s Trophy.

In the game, Corbeanu, who was previously described as being an “outstanding” player by Wolves U23 coach James Collins, managed to grab an assist in the victory.

Moving forward, if Corbeanu can manage to make the most out of every opportunity he gets at the Yorkshire club from now until the end of the season and build on what he managed to do in midweek, we feel he still has the chance to turn his fortunes around and end the season and his loan spell with Wednesday on a high note.

However, if Corbeanu doesn’t end up having a successful time on loan with Wednesday, this could seriously dash any hopes the player may have had about potentially breaking into the senior team at Wolves at some point in the near future.

Bruno Lage will be far from pleased, as a result, as it was his decision to let him leave on loan for valuable game time is hardly paying off, on top of his chances of ever breaking into the first-team decreasing by the month.
