Ryder accused appear in court

Two men accused of the assault that left the New Zealand batsman Jesse Ryder in an induced coma in hospital have appeared in the Christchurch District Court.A 37-year-old builder has been charged with assaulting Ryder and also with reckless disregard for the safety of others. The younger man, a 20-year-old carpet layer, is facing two charges of assault, one shared with the older man.The defence counsel for the older man, Jonathan Eaton, asked for and received a two-week remand on bail for the two men until April 18. He also won an interim suppression order over the names and images of the accused.Eaton said the incident had not been a “Jesse Ryder hate crime” as some witnesses had described it. In his description of events, Eaton said the two men had been out at a family dinner at Aikmans Bar and had crossed paths in a “convivial” fashion with Ryder across the evening.”The eye witness accounts are wildly inaccurate and misleading,” he said. “It goes to show why the justice system and public demand that these matters be dealt with in court before a judge and a jury and not by the media in the court of public opinion.”Eaton also disputed reports of Ryder’s injuries, claiming the batsman had not received a fractured skull but a serious concussion, and had also not sustained a collapsed lung.Ryder was interviewed by police in hospital on Monday but so far has no recollection of events on the night. He was discharged on Wednesday and has flown back home to Wellington.Ryder was hospitalised and placed in the induced coma to recover from injuries sustained when he was the victim of what police alleged to be two assaults in the space of a few minutes after a night out at the end of the Wellington Firebirds’ season.

Kolkata offers more hope for India

Match facts

January 3, 2012
Start time 1200 (0630 GMT)

Big Picture

India are again left needing to come from behind, third time in their last four series. A superb display of swing bowling by Junaid Khan crippled India’s batting line-up on an overcast Chennai morning before MS Dhoni rescued his team with a fighting century. Such a procession of batsmen to the pavilion appears unlikely in Kolkata, where overhead conditions haven’t been as bowler-friendly and the curator Prabir Mukherjee has promised a “typical one-day wicket with lots of runs” with the side batting first having an early advantage. But the visitors have been practicing hard to seal their team’s first bilateral ODI series win over India since 2005.Pakistan’s seamers bowled extended spells at the nets on Tuesday, with Umar Gul, Junaid and Mohammad Irfan aiming at one stump. India, on the other hand, missed a session on Tuesday and have an optional one on the eve of the game. They may be short of adequate preparation for a game they cannot afford to lose.

Form guide (Completed games, most recent first)

India: LWWWL
Pakistan: WLWLL

Players to watch

Shoaib Malik was initially picked only for the T20s but has been retained for the ODIs and played a good supporting hand in Chennai. He’s had a good tour so far, guiding Pakistan to victory in the first T20 before giving Nasir Jamshed company in his team’s successful chase on Sunday. A former Pakistan captain, Malik has struggled to keep his place in the side for a while but his experience has come in handy in this limited-overs series. After his century in the first Test against England in Ahmedabad, Virender Sehwag has failed to fire. He was not picked in March last year for the Asia Cup, and could be under pressure to perform, given he’s had just one half-century in his last 10 innings in ODI cricket.

Team news

Rohit Sharma’s poor run of scores in ODIs continued in Chennai and India could consider replacing him with Ajinkya Rahane. However, there is uncertainty over Virat Kohli’s availability, as he limped off the field after slipping while bowling in Chennai. MRI scans revealed no serious damage, but his condition continues to be monitored.India (possible): 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Rohit Sharma/Ajinkya Rahane, 6 Suresh Raina, 7 MS Dhoni (capt and wk), 8 R Ashwin, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Ashok Dinda. It seems unlikely Pakistan will make changes, even though Mohammad Irfan proved expensive in Chennai.Pakistan (possible): 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Nasir Jamshed, 3 Azhar Ali, 4 Younis Khan, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 6 Shoaib Malik, 7 Kamran Akmal (wk), 8 Junaid Khan, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Mohammad Irfan.

Stats and Trivia

  • Rohit Sharma is 22 short of reaching 2000 runs in ODIs.
  • Kamran Akmal is 70 short of scoring 3000 in ODIs.

Quotes

“If he keeps on doing that then we will find another great left arm fast-bowler of Wasim Akram’s type.”

“We are used to playing with part-timers. Now it’s difficult for them to bowl 10 overs with five players inside the circle. So you’ve to assess whether six batsmen are enough or seven [are needed].”

Cook turns attention to Pietersen

Alastair Cook will turn his attention to being involved in deciding the future of Kevin Pietersen over the coming days after his international season drew to a close

Alastair Cook will turn his attention to being involved in deciding the future of Kevin Pietersen over the coming days after his international season drew to a close with the final ODI against South Africa. At the moment, Cook is still due to play for Essex in their final Championship match of the summer against Yorkshire but, for the next month, hands the captaincy of England over to Stuart Broad for the Twenty20 series against South Africa followed by the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka. Before that tournament starts it is expected that England will announce their Test squad for the series against India, which starts in mid-November, rather than wait until the team returns from Sri Lanka. The most pressing issue for Cook is the situation involving Pietersen and whether he will be welcomed back into the fold after his very public issues over the summer.Pietersen is believed to have already met with Andy Flower, the team director, to start the process of trying to solve the stand-off with further talks expected to be held shortly, which is when Cook, who replaced Andrew Strauss as Test captain last week, is likely to become involved.”I haven’t really been thinking about it too much, with the one-day series on,” Cook said after the final ODI at Trent Bridge. “Over the next couple of weeks, it’s certainly an issue which we as the ECB will have to get resolved. It is a situation which does need to get resolved. There is stuff which needs to be talked about behind closed doors. That will happen.”Flower took a break for the deciding one-day international and is due to link back up with squad ahead of the first Twenty20 international in Durham on Friday. With Cook not involved in the T20I set-up, and the final round of Championship matches taking place next week, there is precious little time for everyone to get round a table together with Pietersen before England fly out to Sri Lanka next Thursday.Although Pietersen is the dominant subject in the current discussions he will not be the only issue Cook and Flower will need to ponder ahead of the daunting prospect of four Tests in six weeks in India, although Cook is fairly sure what form he wants the squad to take. “I’m pretty clear,” he said. “Over the next few days we have to sit down.”Jonathan Trott is expected to be fit despite being diagnosed with a broken finger in his right hand, which has ruled him out for three to four weeks. However, another issue confronting Cook, Flower and the selectors is the likely absence of Ian Bell from the Mumbai Test, with his wife due to give birth. That is in addition to having to fill the vacancy at the top of the order left by Strauss’ retirement. A number of players have been mentioned – Nick Compton, Michael Carberry and Joe Root most strongly – plus the option of moving either Trott or Bell up the order.Jonny Bairstow can expect to be included after his successful return to the team while James Taylor, who made his debut at Headingley, will also be in the mix for a middle-order spot. Ravi Bopara, though, could well find his awful one-day series with the bat against South Africa has put paid to his Test aspirations, although having an Essex team-mate as captain could yet prove useful.

Kent claim hollow victory

Kent beat Middlesex by three wickets with an over to spare in their final FLt20 game at Uxbridge but it was a hollow victory because neither side had any chance of reaching the quarter-finals.

08-Jul-2012
ScorecardKent beat Middlesex by three wickets with an over to spare in their final Friends Life t20 game at Uxbridge but it was a hollow victory because neither side had any chance of reaching the quarter-finals.The groundstaff did well to make conditions playable after the heavy recent rain but it had taken its toll and Middlesex struggled to reach 124 for 9 after Kent put them in on a sluggish pitch and sodden outfield where the ball often plugged on landing. There were only 13 boundaries – three sixes and eight fours – in the entire Middlesex innings and none at all after the 15th over.Kent did not do much better, hitting only seven fours, but, crucially, they cleared the boundary rope six times and a fifth-wicket stand of 50 in seven overs between Azhar Mahmood and Alex Blake proved decisive.Blake hit two sixes, one of which struck a house across the road in Gatting Way, in his 22 off 23 balls and Mahmood had made 30 off 26 balls with two fours and a six when Steven Crook followed through to run him out in the penultimate over.Middlesex’s captain Neil Dexter held his side together with 42 off 38 balls with four fours but then he skied Darren Stevens, the best of the Kent bowlers with 3 for 23, to mid on and Middlesex fell away with Tom Scollay (19) the only other batsman to get into double-figures.Kent did not find scoring easy either, with Sam Billings (10) and Rob Key (three) soon falling to mistimed shots but Sam Northeast gave them a platform with 21 off 23 balls before he holed out on the midwicket boundary. Stevens provided timely acceleration with three sixes in his 26 off 18 balls and Mahmood and Blake made victory a formality.

No sábado, o Botafogo recebe o Sport, no Nilton Santos.

Rajasthan to face Hyderabad in quarters

Ranji Trophy quarter-finals

(from January 2-5)
Hyderabad vs Rajasthan at Hyderabad
Karnataka vs Haryana at Bangalore
Tamil Nadu vs Maharashtra at Chennai
Madhya Pradesh vs Mumbai at Indore

Defending champions Rajasthan will take on Hyderabad in the quarter-finals of the 2011-12 Ranji Trophy from January 2 in a rematch of their season opener last year in the Plate League, when Hyderabad were routed for a Ranji record low of 21. A substantially improved performance this year led to promotion to the Elite League and they now have a chance to extract some revenge with the game being played in Hyderabad.Maharashtra, the other team from the Plate league to be promoted, will face Tamil Nadu, which finished first in Group B, in Chennai. Mumbai, which topped Group A after beating Punjab in their final league game, will take on Madhya Pradhesh in Indore, while Kanataka and Haryana match up in Bangalore. The BCCI has also sent the teams a notice stating that the respective zonal curators will oversee the preparation of pitches for all the Ranji knock-out matches. The BCCI’s directive comes after last season’s semi-finals, when Karnataka filed an official complaint against the Reliance Stadium pitch in Vadodara on which they lost to Baroda inside two days.

Watson in doubt for first Test against New Zealand

Shane Watson has conceded that he is in doubt for the first Test against New Zealand and even if he does play, he will be unable to bowl

Brydon Coverdale at the Wanderers19-Nov-2011Shane Watson has conceded that he is in doubt for the first Test against New Zealand and even if he does play, he will be unable to bowl. Watson left the field on the first day at the Wanderers after he strained his right hamstring while bowling and while he was able to bat and run between the wickets well enough to score 88 in Australia’s first innings, the injury remains a concern. That leaves Australia with three of their best players in danger of missing the Gabba Test against New Zealand, which begins in 11 days. The new No. 3, Shaun Marsh, flew home from South Africa after injuring his back during the loss in Cape Town, while the in-form fast bowler Ryan Harris has also returned to Australia to deal with a hip problem. But neither of those men would be as big a loss as Watson, who is the team’s vice-captain, opening batsman and an important wicket-taking change bowler. Watson said it was important over the next two days that he balanced pushing for a victory to help Australia level the series with ensuring he does no further damage to the hamstring.”With running between wickets it’s [a matter of] not pushing it too hard. I don’t want to make it worse and rule myself out for longer at the start of the summer,” Watson said. “I am trying to find a balance between getting through this Test match and contributing as much as I can, even if it is only with the bat, and not doing too much damage so I give myself a chance of playing in Brisbane.”Most probably bowling will be out in Brisbane but we will just have to wait and see. I am going to get a scan done after this Test to see the extent [of the injury] but hopefully it won’t be a significant one. Hopefully it will only put me out for a little while. When I’ve strained hamstrings in the past it’s taken a little bit of time once it’s healed for me to get back to a full bowling workload, so hopefully it won’t be too long.”Watson was forced to bat without a runner in the first innings – the ICC abolished runners earlier this year – and depending on the target Australia need to chase he could have a heavy responsibility over the final two days at the Wanderers. He said it was important that after this match was over Australia’s medical staff made the right call on whether he should play at the Gabba.”That is going to be a decision that we talk to Alex [Kountouris], our physio, about. Hopefully the worst-case scenario is that I can play as a batsman without any chance of it flaring up and delaying my bowling comeback. I’m very confident we will get the decision right but we need to get it right.”
