Why Man United’s claim to be financially hamstrung is nothing more than cheap sour grapes

It would be thoroughly unreasonable to expect Manchester United supporters to be thoroughly reasonable about their nearest rival artistically blitzing through everything in their path and remaining unbeaten to the point where the ‘I’ word is being mentioned above a whisper.  Even so, nobody could have anticipated what strange curveball they would collectively throw in order to explain away the huge disparity between themselves and Pep Guardiola’s City, a curveball that disregards all logic and defies belief.

The narrative has been bubbling away for some weeks now but has really sparked into life following last weekend’s derby defeat, a 1-2 loss that realistically condemned United to battling for a Champions League spot, their title hopes dashed. Facing the mockery of their neighbours they could have retorted with their vastly superior record at bringing through their own youth talent – a taunt that would barely have touched the sides but it would have at least been something – or, like in the grim Van Gaal days, they could have ignored what was going on in the wider world and looked solely inward: with Mourinho’s wanton dismantling of their proud reputation for attacking, adventurous football who could have blamed them for turning on the Portuguese pouter.

But no, instead their claim, thunderously aired across social media and in the pubs – is that Manchester City have simply outspent their peers, and more so United have been financially hamstrung.

It’s difficult to know where to start with this – just like it would be hard to counter an insistence that the sun is green – but thankfully there is no need to head down the familiar rabbit holes of past expenditure. United used to regularly smash the transfer record for the likes of Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand and from 2008 to 2012 City undertook a period of accelerated spending that treated money with the same respect as confetti and none of that matters anymore.

What matters are three indisputable facts. The summer before last both clubs recruited world-renowned managers; the season before each club finished the 2015/16 campaign on 66 points (separated only by goal difference); and at the time of Guardiola and Mourinho’s appointments both clubs were jam-packed with world class talent.

As a starting point that’s as neat as we’re going to get.

Before we get to the figures though it is necessary to assess the squads that both coaches inherited. Guardiola took charge of the oldest squad in the Premier League, a group that had by the estimation of friends and foe alike reached the end of its natural cycle and was in urgent need of restoration.

It was therefore necessary to buy and sell at a quantitative rate not seen for a decade, moving on Hart, Demichelis, Dzeko, Jovetic, Nasri, and Bony, and bringing in Bravo, Stones, Gundogan, Sane, Nolito, and Jesus.  Mourinho by contrast had some straightforward pruning to do, selling Schneiderlin and Depay and replacing them with the superior Pogba and Mkhitaryan. He also secured the services of Eric Bailly to shore up the defence and snagged the brilliant Ibrahimovic on a free.

United used to regularly smash the transfer record for the likes of Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand and from 2008 to 2012 City undertook a period of accelerated spending that treated money with the same respect as confetti and none of that matters anymore.

It follows then that in the summer of 2016 Manchester City’s net spend (£145.1m) was nearly a third more than United’s (£99.2m). Such is the necessity of an overdue overhaul and perhaps for balance it should be noted here that half of their signings were aged 23 or under.

Fast forward a year and after a disappointing season for each – in the league at least – both clubs again flexed their significant financial muscle and recruited expensive embellishments. On this occasion the net spend is a pipsqueak away from being even with City’s £138.1m a smidgeon more than United’s £136.2m.

Yes but enough of this net spend nonsense I hear you cry. What about gross?

Well, okay let’s get right to it and state that since Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho arrived in Manchester the blue half of the city has spent £365.8m to United’s £291.3m.

Those, right there, are the figures that United fans are clinging to in order to explain why City are presently 11 points clear with such a disproportion in class that one side was scared to come out and play the other in a conventional manner last week. A difference of £74.5m.

Which of course is an awful lot of money, but sadly not in today’s transfer market. Largely due to United themselves stretching the parameters of what is acceptable to splurge on a singular talent (both the Pogba and Lukaku fees dwarf City’s record purchase of £54m for Kevin De Bruyne) the depressing truth is that £74.5m would now realistically secure one top class player.

Are United only one top class player away from City? Let’s say it was Ivan Perisic, the Inter winger that was long linked to Old Trafford until the Italian giants dug their heels in and demanded a figure close to what is under discussion. Would the addition of Perisic be anywhere near enough to haul United into contention this season? Would he be their sole elixir? Even concentrating on a solitary game would the Croatian man-marking Kyle Walker last Sunday instead of United’s £36m signing Anthony Martial have been the difference between a pivotal loss and a famous victory?

As for United being financially hamstrung in relation to their neighbours it does need pointing out that City are no longer reliant on their wealthy benefactor and indeed their summer outlay was funded entirely by earned revenue as the club’s brand continues to soar globally. Even so they trail in this regard to United who recouped an extra £122.7 in 2016 according to the last Deloitte figures.

Manchester United are lightyears behind City on the pitch this season and there are many reasons for this. To suggest that it comes down to money is not only erroneous but sour grapes. Cheap ones at that.

Sheffield Wednesday must make a late swoop for Khazri

Wahbi Khazri’s exit from Sunderland has reportedly hit a snag, which is why Sheffield Wednesday should swoop in and offer the World Cup star the chance to redeem himself in England.

What’s the word?

Sunderland’s Khazri was one of the surprise packages of the World Cup, and the Tunisian international is certain to leave Wearside this summer.

The crafty playmaker has been heavily linked with a return to Ligue 1, where he spent last season on loan, but this week’s reports suggest he may still be on the market.

According to French reports, Khazri’s switch to St Etienne is on the brink of collapse after a disagreement over the terms.

While the player did not want to play in the Championship for Sunderland last season, the allure of forming a star duo alongside Fernando Forestieri could tempt him to have one shot at promotion, and if the Owls can get that promotion then he’d have no reason not to stick around.

The Owls aren’t exactly big spenders, and would probably have to break their transfer record to make it happen, but swooping for Khazri would put them in the mix for promotion, so it could be well worth it.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”269481″ player=”12034″ title=”Five talking points from the World Cup last 16″]

How good is he?

Only one player grabbed both two goals and two assists during the World Cup group stage. Was it Isco? Neymar, perhaps? Not even close, and it wasn’t the illustrious Luka Modric either, as it was in fact Tunisia’s talisman.

The Owls need some more creativity to provide for their front men, and having Khazri would give them that extra creative spark needed to break down tough Championship defences.

The 27 year-old spent last season on loan with Rennes, where he scored nine league goals. He averaged two successful dribbles per game and well over one key pass per game, form he carried into a difficult World Cup group for Tunisia.

The Sunderland playmaker is deceptively strong thanks to his low centre of gravity, fantastic with the ball at his feet and is always looking to whip crosses in behind the defence, something the likes of Atdhe Nuhiu would love. Khazri is also a set piece king, something that this World Cup has shown can be very useful indeed.

Aforementioned, the Owls would likely have to eclipse the £10m they spent on Jordan Rhodes, but it would be worth it to get a seasoned international at the absolute peak of his powers, desperate to be back playing in the big leagues. He would even take over from Forestieri as the club’s prized asset.

So, Sheffield Wednesday fans, would you like to see a late swoop for Khazri? Would he be worth breaking your transfer record for? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…

Hijack: Wolves should steal in on Babacar deal right now

The Mirror are reporting that Crystal Palace are closing in on a deal for Sassuolo striker Khouma Babacar.

Babacar’s loan move from Fiorentina to Sassuolo was only converted into a permanent switch on 1st July, but the Sengalese striker could already be on the move again.

Crystal Palace have been linked with the forward for a long time, and after Christian Benteke’s torrid time in front of goal last season there’s no doubt that the Eagles need to strengthen in that area of the pitch.

Before a deal taking Babacar to Selhurst Park can be confirmed though, Wolves should seek to muscle in on the transaction and make the striker their own this summer.

The Breakdown

Nuno Espirito Santo has already brought a couple of new forward options to Molineux during this transfer window. Raul Jimenez has arrived on loan from Benfica, whilst Leo Bonatini has signed permanently from Al-Hilal.

With the likes of Joe Mason and Paul Gladon likely to be moved on though, an extra option looks needed for the squad to stand up to the rigours of a Premier League campaign.

Babacar has proven himself to be a real handful in Serie A, and his 6’3” frame could certainly be put to good use in England.

For all of Wolves’ smart, intricate, attacking play, against top flight opposition this season they’re likely to need something else to turn to.

Babacar marries technique with his physicality, and the 25-year-old is a clinical finisher too. His presence would provide Wolves with an alternative, more direct, route to goal.

Signing the Senegal international, from under the nose of Crystal Palace, would be the perfect way for Nuno to round off his attacking options ahead of the new campaign.

Chelsea simply have to ship out this £22.5m-rated flop midfielder this summer

Chelsea will be hoping to kick into gear this summer now after finally resolving the future of Antonio Conte in a move which sees the Italian step away from his role at the Bridge.

The Blues had a torrid time in the Premier League last term, but ended the season on a high with an FA Cup final win, and the club will be hoping for some more success next season as they look to reclaim their Champions League place under their new manager.

New signings will be expected now in the coming weeks, but as well as incomings, the club need to be facilitating some exits within the club, and one player we in the Tavern think should be shifted on is former Everton midfielder Ross Barkley.

The £22.5m-rated midfielder has struggled to adapt since moving to London in a big money move from Everton in the middle of last season.

Injuries, added to Antonio Conte seemingly not fancying the England midfielder, put paid to any chances he had of really making a name for himself at the Bridge, and even with a new manager on the horizon, the future looks bleak for Barkley.

There is little to doubt he has the ability to make an impact in the Premier League and at Stamford Bridge, but it cannot be denied that there are elements to his game and general attitude which need improving.

Chelsea will have little time for the development of Barkley with instant success craved, and they should look to get a return on their investment while they still can this summer.

Blues fans, what do you think? Agree? Let us know in the comments!

Birmingham should hijack Sheffield United’s £5m bid for Ipswich’s Waghorn

Sheffield United have made a club-record £5m bid for Ipswich Town forward Martyn Waghorn, according to the Daily Star.

What’s the story, then?

The report says that the £5m approach is the latest in a series of bids made by Chris Wilder to snare the former Sunderland forward, who was involved in 27 goals at Portman Road last season.

It claims that the Blades have money to spend following the £12m departure of David Brooks to Bournemouth, which will allow Wilder to relax his frugal spending strategy.

The report also quotes new Ipswich manager Paul Hurst as refusing to rule out selling Waghorn at the right price this summer.

Birmingham should move in

Nearly half of Blues fans want to sign Waghorn to help Garry Monk overhaul a meek attack that has let the Blues down for a number of years and £5m is surely in the realms of the club’s budget.

If Birmingham have serious play-off ambitions this season, Sheffield United should be in no position to outbid them and Ipswich should not have the financial clout to hold them off.

Of course Monk must be sensible after the mess Harry Redknapp left with his typically scattergun approach last summer but this is a deal for a player who could make a real difference for Birmingham in a bracket that should not be beyond them.

Wolves fans on Twitter buzzing about club activating Adama Traore’s release clause

Having already made nine signings so far this summer, Wolves are set to sign Adama Traore from Middlesbrough for £18m after activating his release clause, The Sun reports.

The 22-year-old winger is known for his blistering pace on the ball which helps him go past defenders with ease, although he has been often criticised for what many see as a lack of end product.

Despite this, the La Masia graduate netted five goals and provided 12 assists in all competitions last season for Boro, where he has now spent two seasons after joining from Aston Villa in the summer of 2016.

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo is rebuilding his squad after they stormed the Championship last season, racking up a total of 99 points and gaining promotion back to the Premier League. If Traore was to come in, it could spell the end of Ivan Cavaleiro’s time at Molineux.

The Portuguese winger has been linked with a move to fellow Prem new boys Fulham, with TEAMtalk reporting that a £16m bid is imminent.

Aston Villa fans back Green to replace Snodgrass

Aston Villa have failed in their attempt to re-sign Robert Snodgrass on loan from West Ham United this summer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.Snodgrass spent the 2017-18 campaign on loan at Villa from West Ham, and scored eight times in 43 appearances for the club last term.It is understood that Villa were keen to re-sign the Scotland international on loan for the coming season, but his performances for West Ham during pre-season have convinced Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini to keep hold of him.The Villa fans are not too disappointed with the news, however, as many believe that Andre Green will now be given the chance to secure a regular spot.[brid autoplay=”true” video=”257600″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Aston Villa’s opening fixtures for the 201819 Championship season”]Green looked capable of playing a key role for the Championship club last term, but he picked up a hamstring problem against Brentford in September, and did not play again in the league for the remainder of the season. The 19-year-old, who is said to be on £5,000 a week, has since recovered from the injury, however, and will now be looking to make an impression for Steve Bruce’s side during the 2018-19 campaign.A selection of the Twitter reaction from the Villa fans can be seen below:

Middlesbrough fans pleased with Hugill acquisition

Middlesbrough announced on Wednesday afternoon that they had completed the signing of West Ham United forward Jordan Hugill on loan for the 2018-19 campaign.

Hugill scored 10 times in 29 appearances for Preston North End in the first half of last season before sealing a surprise move to West Ham in January.

The forward only played 22 minutes of Premier League football for the Hammers in the second half of the 2017-18 campaign, however, and has now been allowed to move on.

The 26-year-old was born in Middlesbrough, and will look to help Tony Pulis’ side challenge for promotion to the Premier League this season.

The Boro fans have been reacting to the deal on social media, and it would be fair to say that the majority are pleased with the acquisition.

Hugill was trolled on a number of occasions due to his struggles in the second half of last season, but he has already proved that he can score goals at Championship level.

Jurgen Klopp should be selling Loris Karius not Simon Mignolet

Liverpool have spent heavily to arm Jurgen Klopp with a squad capable of beating Manchester City to the title this season.

With Naby Keita, Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri, and Alisson, Liverpool now have one of the best squads in Europe and one capable of taking the Premier League title to Liverpool.

As a consequence of their £163.98 million spend in the summer, the Merseyside club are now looking to sell some of their players as they look to recoup some of their financial outlay.

The club managed to get rid of Danny Ings on deadline day, and although the transfer window has now closed, foreign clubs can still buy players in England.

The Liverpool Echo is now reporting that Liverpool goalkeeper, Simon Mignolet is attracting interest from Serie A club, Napoli.

According to the report, Mignolet remains keen on a move to Napoli and Liverpool are holding out for a £12 million fee.

The Breakdown

With Alisson as the first-choice ‘keeper, both Mignolet and Loris Karius remain as the two options for the reserve spot for Liverpool.

The two goalkeepers are in a certain stage of flux, both are in a stage of their respective careers where they need to be playing but aren’t good enough to start for Liverpool.

With Karius on the bench for their game against West Ham, it seems Mignolet is at the bottom of Klopp’s list.

Although the Belgian goalie has never been outstanding, he would be a much better option than Karius. He has the crucial experience in the league and in reality, is a more steady and reliable pair of hands.

What do you think Liverpool fans?

Tottenham fans fearing the worst as Eriksen price tag revealed

Loads of Tottenham fans have been reacting to a transfer update, as the club has reportedly slapped a €200m (about £178m) price tag on Christian Eriksen.

According to Di Marzio, Real Madrid are still facing the possibility of losing Luka Modric this summer, as Inter Milan continue to probe.

The San Siro club have done some excellent deals this summer, and a player like Modric could help them tip the Serie A scales away from Juventus.

The report claims Madrid are eyeing Eriksen as a replacement, and that Spurs have placed an incredible €200m price on any deal for the Danish international.

The Premier League transfer window is of course closed, so any fee for the Tottenham playmaker wouldn’t really help Mauricio Pochettino in the immediate future.

Fans are fearing that it could be a real possibility though, especially after the disappointment of the summer transfer window.
