Rangers had a big howler with Liam Kelly

The Rangers academy showcased its potential last weekend as Giovanni van Bronckhorst fielded a host of young players in their final Premiership match of the campaign.

Alex Lowry stole the show for the Ibrox side with a goal and an assist in a 3-1 win, whilst the likes of Leon King, Charlie McCann and Cole McKinnon, among others, also featured in the first-team match.

Van Bronckhorst has shown that he is not afraid to give young players a chance at Rangers, and Lowry’s emergence is proof of that.

Rangers have not always had the best of luck when it comes to bringing players through their academy in recent years. Of those currently playing professional football, the 10 most valuable Gers academy products – via Transfermarkt – are all playing for other clubs, albeit that one of them (Nathan Patterson) left the club earlier this year in a record deal.

One player with whom the Gers had a big howler in 2018 was goalkeeper Liam Kelly, who was sold to Livingston for an undisclosed fee. Transfermarkt valued him at £90k at the time of the move, having failed to make a first-team appearance at Ibrox.

Since making the switch four years ago, he has played for Livingston and English Championship side QPR, and he is now back in the Premiership with Motherwell as their number one.

He played 22 times in his season in west London in 2019/20 and duly sealed a transfer to Fir Park, where he has impressed with his performances.

In the Premiership this term, he averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.79 and committed zero errors leading to shots or goals. This comes after he averaged a sublime score of 6.97 last term for Motherwell, making zero errors in total.

His current manager Graham Alexander hailed him as a  “fantastic” goalkeeper and tipped him to be on Steve Clarke’s radar for the Scotland squad, highlighting how impressive the 26-year-old has been.

Meanwhile, Allan McGregor has averaged a score of 6.76 in the top flight this term and made four errors directly leading to shots or goals. This suggests that Rangers had a big howler in letting Kelly go in 2018, as his current performances suggest that he has been more reliable than the 40-year-old in the Premiership throughout 2021/22.

At the time of writing (17/05/22), Transfermarkt value the former QPR tank at £405k. This is a whopping 350% increase from his valuation at the end of his Rangers career, which shows that he has come on leaps and bounds since departing from his hometown.

Instead of benefitting from his value on and off the pitch, the Gers let him go before giving him a chance at senior level, and they will surely be regretting that decision now…

Spurs: Interest increasing in Reguilon

Interest in Tottenham Hotspur left-back Sergio Reguilon is increasing ahead of the summer transfer window.

What’s the word?

That’s according to a report by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness), who claim that Barcelona are targeting the signing of a new left-sided defender at the end of the current campaign, and that the 25-year-old Spurs full-back is one of the players on Xavi’s list of potential targets.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/tottenham-hotspur-latest-news-updates-transfer-rumours-gossip-spurs-thfc-conte-paratici” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours and more!”]

The report goes on to state that, while the Catalan side are looking for a relatively cheap option in the position, they could look to include a player of their own in an approach to Spurs for the Spain international, while it is also suggested that Reguilon’s agent, Kia Joorabchian, has a good relationship with the LaLiga side – something that could help to facilitate a switch.

Paratici must axe Reguilon

Following his £32m move to Tottenham back in September of 2020, the argument that Reguilon has not lived up to this rather hefty price tag is a relatively easy one to make.

Indeed, over his 27 Premier League appearances during his debut campaign in north London, the £25.2m-rated left-back offered very little going forwards, scoring no goals, registering three assists and creating four big chances for his teammates, as well as making an average of just 0.6 key passes, taking 0.7 shots and completing 0.8 dribbles per game.

These returns saw the 25-year-old average a disappointing SofaScore match rating of a mere 6.74, ranking him as Spurs’ tenth-worst performer in the English top flight.

It has been a similar case over the Spaniard’s 25 league fixtures this season, with the £68k-per-week full-back scoring two goals, registering three assists and creating five big chances for his teammates, as well as making an average of 1.2 key passes, 0.8 shots and completing 0.8 dribbles per game.

These returns have seen the player who Gary Neville claimed is “nowhere near good enough” for Antonio Conte’s system average a SofaScore match rating of 6.92, ranking him as Tottenham’s 12th-worst player in the Premier League in the current campaign.

Indeed, while these returns are far from disastrous for a typical full-back, with Conte deploying a system that utilises wing-backs, much more is expected going forwards from the players who operate in these positions – something that the Italian has reportedly stated as one of the main arguments for Tottenham moving Reguilon on this summer.

As such, considering all of the above, it would indeed appear a very wise move for Fabio Paratici to cash in on the defender while the interest is there, as it would very much seem as if Reguilon and Conte are far from a match made in heaven.

A gente perde e ganha assim.

– Vida do treinador é sempre avaliada no final do jogo.

Tottenham handed "fresh" injury boost

Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a fresh injury lift ahead of their clash with Brentford in the Premier League.

What’s the latest?

Spurs boss Antonio Conte has revealed that the club have not suffered any blows to their squad after the 1-0 defeat to Brighton next weekend.

They will now come up against London rivals Brentford with the same players available as they look to bounce back from their disappointing result against Graham Potter’s side.

Journalist Jonathan Veal tweeted: “Tottenham have no fresh injuries for the visit to Brentford. Skipp, Doherty and Tanganga remain out #THFC.”

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-martinez-dybala-spence-conte-2” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

Supporters will be buzzing

The Spurs faithful will surely be buzzing by this big boost as it means that there are no other players that they have to worry about missing out on this match.

Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son and Dejan Kulusevski all remain available at the top end of the pitch and that means Tottenham still have a huge chance to win this game. The trio have been in fine form this season, in spite of their struggles against Brighton last week, and keeping them fit will be vital to their top-four hopes.

Since joining in January, Kulusevski has three goals and six assists in 10 starts for Antonio Conte – almost averaging a goal contribution per start in the Premier League. Meanwhile, Kane has 20 goals and assists combined in 30 starts and Son has been directly involved in 23 goals in 29 outings.

These impressive statistics illustrate how impressive they have been in the top-flight and highlight why an injury to any of them would be a major blow to Conte. Therefore, having them fit and firing is a big boost for Spurs and that is why this latest squad update will delight supporters.

The fans will surely want to see Champions League football next season and all three of them have shown that they will be pivotal to the club’s chances of securing qualification for the competition.

Although, it is also worth noting that avoiding defensive injuries will also be key given the backline’s recent form in the Premier League. Spurs have only conceded more than once in the division once in their last nine matches, once in their last 10 in all competitions, and this shows that the likes of Christian Romero and Eric Dier are also important players who need to be protected.

Leeds: Noel Whelan reacts to U23 ticket news

Leeds United employee Noel Whelan has hailed the club’s supporters ahead of a potential record attendance for an Under-23 fixture on Friday evening.

The Lowdown: Elland Road ticket details

The Whites youngsters, now led by Andrew Taylor following Mark Jackson’s promotion to the first team, take on Manchester City tomorrow evening.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-42/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Leeds gave season ticket holders and members the opportunity to attend for free up until April 12, with Beren Cross sharing on Wednesday evening that ticket sales are beyond 17,000.

The record for a Premier League 2 fixture stands at 17,525 – set by Everton in 2017, but it looks as if the Whites will surpass that figure before the weekend.

The Latest: Whelan’s comments

Talking to Football Insider, Whelan labelled the support as ‘incredible’, adding that this goes to show that an expansion to Elland Road needs to happen.

“That just says it all about our club.

“We knew we had incredible supporters, and this is just the latest evidence of that.

“It’s not the first time we’ve gone over the 10,000 mark – and that’s fantastic support.

“This sort of thing just epitomises why we need a bigger stadium. A lot of these fans can’t get tickets for the Premier League games.

“For me, this sort of demand just proves that an expansion to Elland Road needs to be in the works.

“It’s going to be a great experience for these young players to play in front of that kind of crowd.”

The Verdict: Bonkers

The well-known phrase ‘Leeds take more’ is sometimes mocked by opposition supporters, but this just goes to show how incredible the Whites faithful are.

Bringing nearly 20,000 to a U23 fixture is crazy, and potentially higher than a number of Championship attendances this weekend.

The club have teased work to Elland Road in recent years, and after this update, hopefully, they will make a start on plans to expand the current 37,890 capacity.

Ponting's inspired change, Afridi's brainless slog

Worry of the day
Under the morning clouds, Ben Hilfenhaus looked the man most likely to strike for Australia and he finally did, when Azhar Ali edged behind. But in the very next over, there was a sharp intake of breath from Australian fans when Hilfenhaus, fielding at deep square leg, dived to save a boundary and struggled to get up, clearly in pain. Hilfenhaus appeared to jar his left shoulder and a couple of minutes went by as he hunched over and was checked on by the captain and physio. Hilfenhaus stayed on and bowled the next over, but after that left the field for some treatment. All was well, though, and he returned after a few overs although he will be watched closely ahead of the second Test.Elbow of the day, revisited
Ricky Ponting’s elbow was the subject of much debate on the first day, when he and Mohammad Aamer clashed after Ponting was caught at short leg. It resulted in an unofficial warning for the bowler, who had also crashed with Michael Clarke in the second Twenty20 at Edgbaston, although plenty of onlookers felt Ponting was more at fault for raising his elbow. “I was just a bit surprised,” Ponting said. “It was more of a reaction thing from me that he was where he was. I had sort of turned my back to look where the ball was going and the bloke caught it. As I went to turn around there was someone immediately in what I feel is my space. It’s not the first time it’s happened, either, as we saw in the Twenty20 game with Michael.” When asked if he thought Aamer was aware of running close to the batsman, Ponting’s reply was blunt: “I think he was looking at me, wasn’t he?”Change of the day No. 1
Salman Butt loomed as the man most likely to inspire an incredible victory, and he progressed with ease towards a century. But when Ricky Ponting handed the ball to Marcus North ahead of Steven Smith, due to the presence of two left-handers at the crease, the part-time offspinner struck with his first delivery. It wasn’t exactly a conventional wicket – a leg-side stumping thanks to wonderfully sharp work from Tim Paine – and Butt was distraught at his mistake. It looked like a masterstroke from Ponting, and it was even more so when North went on to earn a place on the honours board with a six-wicket haul, givin him the best figures ever by an Australian spinner in a Test innings at Lord’s.Change of the day No. 2
Intermittent light rain sprinkled down in the first session but when it became a bit heavier, the umpires were quick to call for the covers. The groundstaff were caught off guard, and by the time they’d removed the boundary boards and got the hover-cover halfway to the pitch, the rain had cleared. The umpires called the players back on, although the Australians hadn’t even had time to get off the field. As weather forecasters, Ian Gould and Rudi Koertzen make good umpires.Sleepy moment of the day
Everyone watching at the ground enjoyed seeing Umar Akmal launch the first six of the innings. Well, almost everyone. The lofted drive to long-on cleared the boundary and landed on the hover-cover, a few metres from one of the groundstaff. But he didn’t get up and collect the ball for a simple reason: he was asleep. The TV cameras caught the man still apparently dozing while one of his colleagues grabbed the ball and tossed it back onto the field. Long-on is a dangerous place when Umar Akmal is batting, and when a four bounced over the fence shortly afterwards, the man had woken from his slumber.Silly, silly mid off of the day
For three deliveries in the hour before lunch Simon Katich squatted at 45 degrees in front of Umar Amin in a position which virtually ran parallel to the pitch. It seemed more confounding considering it was set for Shane Watson, not the most express fast bowler in the Australian team. Amin duly took advantage of the large empty space in the cover region to pick three easy fours, thereby forcing Ricky Ponting to abandon a silly move.Boom boom, crash, crash of the day
Why does Shahid Afridi come out to bat? After his 15-minute mayhem in the first innings which ended with suicidal shot selection, Pakistan’s captain had a good chance to redeem himself today. Instead, three balls into his second innings he once again went for the long handle against Marcus North, offering a simple catch in the deep. Even by Afridi’s standards it was ridiculous to say the least.

Moshiri could cause chaos with Pereira

Everton have been linked with a number of potential candidates in the search for their sixth manager in six years including Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard.

This week they have already been interviewing for the role, with Vitor Pereira flying in yesterday to meet with Farhad Moshiri, however, the meeting has not been met with a warm reception.

What’s the word?

According to The Mirror, Moshiri’s interest in Pereira has been met with strong resistance from the Everton board and club executives, due to his recent poor record at Fenerbahce and his relegation with 1860 Munich.

It has been reported that the Toffees owner has been persuaded behind the scenes to pull away from appointing the manager, and encouraged to take his time to look over the other candidates before he makes a decision, due to the situation Everton find themselves in, three points away from the relegation zone.

Pereira was sacked from his managerial position at Fenerbahce for the second time last month after the Turkish side failed to pick up results in the league, and the Portuguese native is currently available for a new role.

Moshiri could cause chaos

The potential appointment has not just been met with concern by the Everton board, but also by the fans who already have a fractured relationship with the owner after years of reckless spending and bad decisions that have ultimately found the club in one of their worst positions in decades.

That potentially put them in a relegation battle that could see Everton lose their Premier League status for the first time in the league’s 30 year existence.

Fans have been taking to social media to share their concern over the chances of 53-year-old Pereira becoming the next manager of the club, with one fan tweeting:

“Yesterday I said we’re not in a relegation battle if we appoint Vitor Pereira we will get relegated.”

Moshiri is in no position to be making any more mistakes, so ensuring that he looks at all of his options carefully and finds the right manager to suit the needs of Everton’s situation to keep them safe inside the Premier League next season is absolutely imperative.

There is no room for error in the final few months of this season and winning points to climb the table should be the top priority.

After all, the last thing Everton want is another manager to cause the fans to turn on him and Pereira already has a history of that, having to tell supporters in Turkey to “shut up” according to reporter Zach Lowy.

Lampard could give VDB a key role

Everton managed to get a loan deal over the line for Donny Van de Beek on Deadline Day, as the out of favour Manchester United star seeks first-team football elsewhere.

The temporary move doesn’t just benefit the midfielder’s future, but could be a crucial signing for the Toffees this season in their challenge to climb back into a safe position in the Premier League under new manager, Frank Lampard.

The 24-year-old has not been able to make his mark in the Premier League yet, with just five starts over his first 18 months at the Manchester club, but will be hoping that he can make an impact on the Everton side, especially with Abdoulaye Doucoure out for at least a month with an injury he picked up against Aston Villa, which saw him forced off the pitch in the 65th minute.

This has given Van de Beek, who was hailed “perfect” by Owen Hargreaves, the ideal opportunity and elevates his chances of making an instant appearance in the starting line up when the Toffees return to action this weekend in the FA Cup against Brentford.

New Everton boss, Lampard, has already been praised by the £35m midfielder in his first interview since joining the side yesterday;

“I had a really positive meeting with the new coach. We have the same ideas about football and he had a lot of influence on my decision,” Van de Beek explained.

“I played against him when I was at Ajax, and he was at Chelsea (as the manager), so he knows me as a player. He thinks I have qualities that can help the team.

“I can learn a lot from him because he was a little bit in the same position – a midfield player who scored a lot of goals.”

Van de Beek is not unproven in his potential and his talents, when you look at his career before he joined Manchester United, his record under Erik ten Hag at Ajax is absolutely phenomenal with 41 goals and 34 assists in 175 appearances from his midfield position, an output Lampard will be hoping that he can inspire the Dutchman to reignite at Everton.

The Chelsea legend now has the opportunity to further prove his worth as a manager in the Premier League by getting the very best out of the current crop of players that Rafa Benitez failed to have a positive impact on, and implementing the new signings into the side to improve the trajectory that Everton has been on so far this season by taking the club out of a potential relegation battle.

Should he immediately get more from van de Beek then he will surely become an instant hit at Goodison.

Sunderland team news vs Doncaster

Sunderland have now been gifted a double boost before they play Doncaster Rovers at home in League One this afternoon.

The Lowdown: Busy deadline day

The Stadium of Light faithful signed both Jermain Defoe and Jay Matete on Transfer Deadline Day in the hope that they will help them push for automatic promotion up to the Championship.

Their last outing was quite frankly an abysmal one, getting thumped 6-0 away from home by Bolton Wanderers, which ultimately resulted in Lee Johnson losing his job.

Mike Dodds will now take charge of the game against Doncaster, as the board continue their search for a permanent replacement.

The Latest: Defoe and Matete in squad

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match, Dodds has now revealed that both Defoe and Matete will be in the squad for the clash:

“Both will be in the squad this weekend.

“Jay oozes quality and class and he will give us a different dimension in midfield, so he is a fantastic addition for the football club.

“It’s a big move for Jay and I have felt a little sorry for him because his arrival has been somewhat overshadowed by Jermain’s return, but I think he’s a very clever signing.

“We don’t really need to talk about Jermain’s quality, but the thing that has struck me, which shouldn’t surprise you but often does, is his human qualities.

“He’s come into the club with Under-23 staff overseeing the first team and treated everyone with the upmost respect – he has a real charisma in the way he holds and conducts himself.

“We know he will have big moments for the football club on the pitch throughout the remainder of the season.”

The Verdict: Double boost

To have both signings available straight away is certainly a double boost for Dodds and his team.

The qualities that Defoe possesses speaks for itself, having scored 37 goals in 93 matches over all competitions across three campaigns for the Black Cats in his previous spell (Transfermarkt), including a memorable winner at home to North East rivals Newcastle United in the Premier League in 2015.

Dodds also spoke very highly of Matete, who comes from fellow League One side Fleetwood Town, having made no fewer than 25 appearances for them in all competitions this term, scoring twice (Transfermarkt).

Nonetheless, both will no doubt strengthen the squad, and will be itching to make an instant impact this afternoon.
