Younis Khan pushed up to category A contract

Younis Khan has been bumped up to Pakistan’s top category of central contracts, after the PCB amended the criteria by which players are allotted contracts

Umar Farooq11-Jun-2014Younis Khan has been bumped up to Pakistan’s top category of central contracts, after the PCB amended the criteria by which players are allotted contracts. Younis had been slotted into category B when the contracts were announced last week, a move that was heavily criticised across the country. The PCB released a list of 31 contracted players, and while Misbah-ul-Haq, Mohammad Hafeez, Saeed Ajmal, Shahid Afridi, Junaid Khan were in the top bracket, Younis – a veteran of 89 Tests and 253 ODIs – was placed alongside Umar Akmal, Umar Gul and Ahmed Shehzad in category B.It was reported that Younis was upset and refused to sign the contract. PCB chairman Najam Sethi looked to “rectify the situation”.”According to the new clause to be inserted into the rules, any player who has played over 300 matches across the three formats of the game, and has captained in all three formats will be placed in category A,” Sethi was quoted as saying in a PCB release. “The committee comprising Zakir Khan, Moin Khan and Mohammad Akram did a good job in framing the rules [for giving out contracts], but it did not sufficiently address all issues, especially fitness and past performance, whereby a class player like Younis Khan was a fitting candidate for category A.”According to the earlier policy, those who play all the three formats were considered for the top category. However, whether the policy was being strictly implemented was questionable, as category A player Shahid Afridi had retired from Tests in 2010 and has been playing only limited-overs cricket. Even Mohammad Hafeez, who was dropped from the Test side last year was given the top category.Younis, 36, a regular in the Test team, is eying the 2015 World Cup, though he last played an ODI in March 2013. He retired from T20 cricket after leading the side to victory in the World T20 in 2009.

Afghanistan's 'one percent chance'

The long shot has a special place in the heart of most sports fans. Not to mention the underdog that bites

Afghanistan will need to score the runs very quickly to have any chance of qualifying•AFP

The long shot has a special place in the heart of most sports fans. Not to mention the underdog that bites. For Afghanistan to get through to the next round of the World T20 and continue menacing the established sides, they will need to grasp a “one percent chance”, according to their coach, Kabir Khan. It may even be smaller than that.Afghanistan, who many fancied to cause an upset in the opening match of the tournament, will need several improbables to go their way if they are to deny Bangladesh top spot in the group. The hosts have won two from two with plenty to spare and now face Hong Kong, whose record so far is as bad as Bangladesh’s is good. Even a landslide win for Afghanistan over a more-than-handy Nepal would require Hong Kong to mete out an extraordinarily unlikely thrashing of their own.Kabir can only focus on the job at hand for his team. “Every match is important and we want to win, obviously now we are in a position to plan to win with big margins,” he said. “Cricket is a funny game and we are expecting a one percent chance of anybody beating Bangladesh here. But if someone beats Bangladesh, we have to keep our chances alive, at least the run rate should be higher and if that happens and our run rate is there, then we could qualify.”Afghanistan are currently third behind Nepal on NRR, after contrasting fortunes on the first day. The run rate situation means that Nepal are actually better placed to go through should Bangladesh slip up and consequently will be expected to push Afghanistan hard. Had Kabir’s team beaten Hong Kong more heavily on Tuesday, the equation may have been more in their favour but he said the batsman had been following instructions only to unleash towards the end.”In respect of Bangladesh getting beaten, we had to put ourselves in a position where we could win and then you go for the plan to get your run rate better,” he said. “We wanted to keep wickets in hand and then, at a stage that we were in control, we wanted to finish the match early. So that’s the sort of thing you do in T20, you get yourself in a position of control and then you dominate.”Shafiqullah’s 24-ball half-century, to follow up a slightly more measured (by his own standards) 68 from Mohammad Shahzad, suggested they could have started the domination a little earlier.Their best chance may be to bowl Nepal out cheaply – no mean feat after their fellow Associate resisted all 20 overs for the loss of just five wickets against Bangladesh – and then race past the target. Afghanistan certainly have the firepower in their attack, which will be the quickest Nepal have faced on a lively Chittagong surface, although such riches may have inadvertently undermined their chances of progression. Kabir suggested, with a grin, that the beating Bangladesh took in the Asia Cup earlier this month had triggered a defensive posture by the hosts.”We have good-quality fast bowlers, we train them like that, they are aggressive and everybody knows that our fast-bowling attack is very good, especially at Associate standard and sometimes at Test standard. In the Asia Cup, the bowling was very all together and I think that’s why the Mirpur wicket was a bit slow.”

Zimbabwe eye unlikely progress

Zimbabwe can still progress to the main draw of the World T20, but they must beat UAE convincingly and hope that Ireland succumb to a big defeat against Netherlands

The Preview by Firdose Moonda20-Mar-2014Match factsMarch 21, 2014, SylhetStart time 1130 (0530GMT)Big Picture Brendan Taylor is Zimbabwe’s leading scorer in the tournament•ICC

This match could mean everything or it could mean nothing. It’s a possible dead rubber before the final shootout, or the decider in a group that has been kept alive by Zimbabwe taking both their games to the final ball. They’ve provided excitement but their fate does not lie in their own hands. To play in the main draw, Zimbabwe have to win their final match and win big. Then they have to hope Ireland succumb to a big enough defeat against Netherlands so that neither their run-rate nor Netherlands’ trumps Zimbabwe. Calculators, rather than cricket equipment, could end up deciding who goes through.Zimbabwe will see an opportunity to do the first of those things. UAE have not been the competitive force they would have hoped to be, and lost to both Netherlands and Ireland. But Zimbabwe will have to shake off the penchant to play to their opposition’s level, convince themselves they are a few tiers above UAE, and march to a comprehensive victory to give themselves a chance. Even then, if that happens, all they can do is wait.UAE do not stand to gain anything from this match but respect. They are out of contention to play with the big eight and have admitted they are team that is still learning. This is their chance to show what they’ve gleaned so far.Form guide (completed matches, most recent first)Zimbabwe WLLLL
UAE LLWatch out for Brendan Taylor is the team’s leading run-scorer, and Tinashe Panyangara, their leading wicket-taker, but Zimbabwe’s silent assassins have also done an important job for them. Prosper Utseya opens the bowling and his spell against Netherlands showed how successful he can be upfront. He took 2 for 16 to set them back in the powerplay. Sean Williams has partnered twice to usher the batting line-up to a respectable score, although the pressure got to him against Netherlands. If he can overcome that, he can be a key middle-order man for Zimbabwe.UAE have not had much in the way of individual achievement in this tournament. None of their batsmen have managed a half-century and only four bowlers have found themselves among the wickets. Rohan Mustafa is not one of them, but he does have the lowest economy rate among his team-mates. Mustapha has gone for only 5.56 runs an over and it’s no fluke. His economy rate in domestic cricket is almost as miserly at 5.82. He’ll hope he can translate that pressure into success in his final match.Team news Zimbabwe may still want to tinker with their opening duo after Sikandar Raza was out cheaply in both matches. With Vusi Sibanda in decent touch, he could be promoted back to a position he is comfortable in to make room for Malcolm Waller down the order. With Timycen Maruma acting only as a fielder in the last match, Zimbabwe may give Shingi Masakadza a game.Zimbabwe: 1 Hamilton Masakadza 2 Sikandar Raza/Vusi Sibanda, 3 Brendan Taylor (cpt, wk), 4 Vusi Sibanda/Malcolm Waller, 5 Sean Williams, 6 Elton Chigumbura, 7 Timycen Maruma/Shingi Masakadza, 8 Prosper Utseya, 9 Tinashe Panyangara, 10 Tendai Chatara, 11 Natsai MushnagweFor one last hurrah, UAE may look to mix it up a touch as they say goodbye to the tournament.UAE squad: 1 Amjad Ali, 2 Faizan Asif, 3 Khurram Khan, 4 SP Patil, 5 Shaiman Anwar, 6 Amjad Javed, 7 Rohan Mustapha, 8 V Shetty, 9 Ahmed Raza, 10 Kamran Shahzad, 11 Sharif Asadullah, 12 Manjula Guruge, 13 Moaaz Qazi, 14 Rohit Singh, 15 Shadeep SilvaConditionsAfter a first match day in which 180-plus scores appeared par on the Sylhet surface, the second day’s play at the venue saw much lower scores and more difficult conditions for batting. There was more turn on offer and the bounce was lower. Should it stay that way, even lower totals can be expected for Friday’s matches. Rain brought an early end to the Ireland-UAE match and more can be expected between 3pm and 6pm on Friday with temperatures at a high of 29 degrees.Stats and Trivia The most Zimbabwe have scored in a T20 match is 200 for 2 against New Zealand in a game they lost. The lowest total they have defended is 105, against West Indies in 2010. UAE have only played two T20 matches classed as full internationals, both at this World T20 qualifier.Quotes “We need to regroup, have a good fielding session and come back on Friday and try and get all three departments right. If we do that, we are going to be tough to beat.””We have not been exposed to such a stage so obviously we are going to learn a lot from here.”

Bailey hits world-record 28 off over

George Bailey, Australia’s newest Test player, has joined Brian Lara in the history books by equalling his world record of 28 runs in a Test over. Bailey’s assault came off the bowling of James Anderson in the final over of Australia’s second innings at the WACA and matched Lara’s mauling of Robin Peterson at the Wanderers, which occurred ten years ago almost to the day.Bailey, who was playing his third Test, could have been forgiven for batting conservatively given that he has yet to really cement his place in the side, but followed the team plan for quick runs to allow Michael Clarke to declare once the lead passed 500. His attack against a bowler of Anderson’s quality and Test experience highlighted the gulf that has grown between the two sides this series and pleased his team-mates no end.”We didn’t know it was a record,” Shane Watson said after stumps. “There’s no doubt we’ve had quite a few bad experiences against Jimmy Anderson. To see that is always nice to have the shoe on the other foot, because he’s certainly had the upper hand on a lot of our batsmen in the Ashes series that I’ve been involved in … at certain times individuals in the Australian team have been at his mercy. It certainly provided a little bit of enjoyment for us.”Watson had already thrilled the crowd with a sustained assault on the England bowlers earlier in the session, his best over having brought 22 when he launched Graeme Swann down the ground for three sixes. But Bailey’s efforts were all the more remarkable given Anderson’s pace, and brought to mind the way he has played in his highly successful one-day international career. He began with a hard cut that flew over the slips and ran away for four, then followed up with a straight six that cleared the sightscreen at the Prindiville Stand End. A two clipped through the leg side followed, and then came a better-placed swat through square leg for four. Bailey finished the over with two more sixes down the ground, one that just cleared long-off and another that sailed much further into the crowd at long-on.Anderson was unable to find a length that stopped Bailey from getting under the ball but Clarke’s declaration at the end of the over prevented any further carnage, although Anderson and his team-mates still looked dejected as they left the field facing a chase of 504. Bailey was left unbeaten on 39 from 30 deliveries; he had started the over with 11 from 24 balls.Anderson now holds the unwanted record of most runs conceded by a fast bowler in a Test over, the previous record having been the 25 that Andy Roberts took off Ian Botham at Port-of-Spain in 1980-81. Australia’s previous record for most runs in an over was the 26 that Mitchell Johnson – Bailey’s partner during the over – clubbed off Paul Harris at the Wanderers in 2008-09.

Tendulkar available for Mumbai's season opener

Sachin Tendulkar will warm up for his farewell Test series by appearing in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy opener against Haryana, to be played in Lahli from October 27 to 30

Sachin Tendulkar could play his final domestic match when Mumbai face Haryana in the Ranji Trophy•AFP

Sachin Tendulkar will warm up for his farewell Test series by appearing in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy opener against Haryana, to be played in Lahli from October 27 to 30.A day before Mumbai’s selection panel, headed by former India opener Sudhir Naik, is to select the squad for the match and name the captain for the season, Mumbai Cricket Association joint secretary Nitin Dalal confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that Tendulkar “has made himself available” for the Ranji match.Tendulkar will then join the Indian team one last time for the two-Test series starting on November 6. He had announced his decision to retire after the second Test, his 200th, to be played at his home ground, the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After leaving international cricket, Tendulkar is unlikely to return to the domestic circuit, so Mumbai’s match against Haryana may mark Tendulkar’s last appearance in Indian domestic cricket. He had made his maiden first-class appearance almost 25 years ago, against Gujarat on December 10, 1988, and has played 37 Ranji Trophy games so far over the years. Despite wanting to be part of the Mumbai dressing room more often, a packed international calendar prevented him from doing so. After retiring from ODIs last year, Tendulkar appeared in four Ranji games for Mumbai last season, scoring two centuries and a fifty in five innings. It was the first time since 1994-95 that he played more than three Ranji games in a season.

Ireland secure World Cup qualification after tie

Ireland secured qualification for the 2015 World Cup even though Netherlands snatched a last-ball tie

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Jul-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsIt went down to the wire at Amstelveen with Netherlands needing 13 off the last over with a wicket in hand. The equation narrowed down to six needed off the final ball to tie and Michael Rippon did just that, and though Netherlands denied Ireland a win, the result was good enough for Ireland to become the first Associate nation to qualify for the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. The tension began to build when Tom Cooper was dismissed in the 48th over, leaving the hosts with 16 to get off the last two overs with three wickets in hand. Alex Cusack bowled a tight penultimate over, conceding just three runs and dismissing Mudassar Bukhari, caught in the deep. The pressure piled on the ninth-wicket pair of Edgar Schiferli and Rippon heading into the final over and it escalated when Schiferli was run out off the second ball.John Mooney didn’t concede a run off his first three balls, but his next three went for plenty. Rippon took two off the fourth and hit a four off the fifth. With seven needed to win off the final ball, Mooney only needed to ensure he bowled a legal delivery, in order to deny Netherlands a victory. The final ball disappeared over long-on but Ireland had done just enough to make it to their third consecutive World Cup.For the second time in as many matches, Ireland’s O’Brien brothers, Niall and Kevin, made solid contributions with bat and ball respectively. Niall made an exact 50, while Kevin took 3 for 52. Ed Joyce held the innings together with an unbeaten 96 after Ireland opted to bat. The Ireland openers got off to a good start, adding 73 within 14 overs before William Porterfield was bowled by the offspinner Michael Swart for 30. His opening partner Paul Stirling made a run-a-ball 49 before he drove Rippon straight to Cooper at cover.Niall and Joyce then added 113 for the third wicket, the most productive stand of the innings. Niall pushed a single to cover to reach his fifty but fell in the same over, bowled by Cooper trying to sweep. Bukhari took two wickets to reduce Ireland to 235 for 5 off 46 overs. Joyce needed 11 for a century before the final over and when he faced the penultimate ball, he needed five. He could only manage a single, annoyed with himself for not being able to retain strike.Netherlands began positively, getting to 50 within nine overs before Stephan Myburgh was bowled by a Stirling top spinner for 35 off 26 balls. Eric Szwarczynski and Wesley Barresi took the score to 135 before Ireland hit back with three quick wickets for seven runs. Barresi fell four short of a fifty when he was caught behind off Kevin.Daan van Bunge helped Netherlands make a quick recovery with a brisk 45 off 40 balls, taking the score to 210 off 41 overs before Kevin trapped him lbw. The asking rate crept above seven after van Bunge’s dismissal and Peter Borren and Cooper helped keep the hosts in the game with a stand of 34. Porterfield took a sharp catch at midwicket to send back Cooper and give Kevin his third wicket. The final-wicket pair had all but taken Netherlands past the finish line but Ireland were the bigger victors at the end of the day. With Ireland through, the second qualification slot for the World Cup is still open, with Netherlands, Scotland and Afghanistan in the mix.

Afghanistan coach wants more BCCI support

Afghanistan coach Kabir Khan believes India can lend more influence and funds to help assist his team

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Feb-2013

Coach Kabir Khan believes BCCI can be vital to Afghanistan’s cause•AFP

Kabir Khan, the Afghanistan coach, has called for the BCCI to provide more support to Afghanistan cricket, highlighting England’s support for their neighbouring Associate nations.”If you look at England they go out of their way to support the associate cricket nations in their region, which include Holland, Ireland and Scotland,” Kabir told PTI. “They allow their players to play in their county and league system, while giving them valuable assistance through various coaching programmes.”In comparison, South Asia has four Test-playing nations – Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh – [yet despite this] we don’t get the same kind of support, except for Pakistan. India has the influence and money to do a lot for Afghanistan cricket if they wanted. But so far we are still waiting.”There’s a lot of passion for cricket in Afghanistan, and there are good players, but we suffer mainly because we don’t have a domestic cricket structure. We don’t get enough matches in this region.”The Afghanistan team is currently in Lahore for a month-long conditional camp which also includes a series of matches against Pakistan A and several regional sides. The team trained at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore, where they were granted access to all facilities and coaches at hand.Afghanistan will play Scotland next month to play in the ICC league series for a four-day match, two ODIs and a T20 in preparation of next year’s World T20. Khan has already set his sights on the 2015 World Cup, which is to be jointly-held by Australia and New Zealand.”Right now we are focusing on improving our fitness and fielding skills,” Kabir said. “We want to play in the next ODI World Cup and make our presence felt.”
