Matt Prior, the England wicketkeeper, has offered his support to theon-field umpires during the current trial of review technology asthe players continue to come to grips with the new system. Tony Hilland Rudi Koertzen were at the centre of the action on the second daybetween England and West Indies at Sabina Park, with both sidesgaining and losing from the third umpire. This is the third series to be part of the trial, following theprevious contests between India and Sri Lanka then New Zealand andWest Indies. Devon Smith was given out lbw to Andrew Flintoff afterHill, the on-field official, had originally declined the appeal, whileRamnaresh Sarwan was reprieved after Hill had initially given apositive decision in Steve Harmison’s favour.”I think a lot of the players have some sympathy with the guys[umpires] because they are making tricky decisions,” Prior said.”We’ve just had an afternoon of having to try and make decisions in asplit second and it’s not easy. Everyone makes mistakes, players willmake more mistakes than umpires in a day’s play. If an umpire makes amistake it’s not because they are trying to. If the decision ischanged then so be it.”Five decisions were reviewed during the second day’s play and all inthe space of 12 overs. The most controversial of those was Sarwan’soverturned lbw when on 5, with replays showing the ball would haveclipped the top of the stumps.”Harmison’s one with the use of Hawk-Eye looks like it is hitting thetop of the bails which is out,” Prior said. “So from that point ofview you can get a bit frustrated. But it’s not easy. The third umpireis making a guess decision as much as anyone else. If you are trustingHawk-Eye to track the ball three-quarters of the way or longer, thenwhy not all the way. “As a wicketkeeper, Prior will often be in the thick of the action whenreviews are asked for, although he said that he can only be of somuch use to Andrew Strauss when the ball is swinging “A lot of peoplewould say that the keeper has the best view but that’s not always thecase,” he said. “We had a couple where the ball was tailing into legstump and you lose the line.”From my own point of view it’s very much an instinctive call. You seeit and you either feel it’s out or you don’t. But when a decision likethe Steve Harmison one is given not out you almost startsecond-guessing yourself a little because I thought that was prettyclose.”Sarwan admitted he was grateful for his escape but said that WestIndies remained unsure about the system following their firstexperience of it on the recent tour of New Zealand. “In our team nottoo many guys are keen on it. It kind of takes the umpires out of thegame. Sometimes it goes your way, sometimes not, we have to realisethat everyone is human and makes mistakes and that is something thatyou need to understand.”One of the issues that came to the fore was the time it takes to makethe decisions, which was an original concern about the furtherintroduction of technology. The system has already been tweaked by theICC to reduce the number of reviews down to two per team, perinnings, and the stoppages in play will need further monitoring.”Do you sacrifice that to make sure you get the right decision?,”Prior said. “There is a huge amount at stake at the minute and bigdecisions have to be made. Traditionalists will say it does take quitea bit of time out of the game, and why shouldn’t the umpires have theright to make their decision as they always have done?”

Akram proposes India-Pakistan Test in Mumbai

Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram has urged India not to break cricketing ties with Pakistan, suggesting that both countries play a Test match in Mumbai, to show solidarity after the recent terrorist attacks in the city.”Cricket is not on anyone’s mind at the moment, but after three to four days, both countries must take a positive step,” Akram told . “I suggest Pakistan and India play a Test in Mumbai to give a clear message that we will not give in.His remarks come amid unconfirmed reports that the Indian government had denied its cricket team permission to tour Pakistan early next year ,following last week’s attacks. Tensions between the two countries have increased after allegations that the terrorists had Pakistani links, accusations Pakistan strongly denies.”India is like a second home for me, so whatever has happened there has hurt everyone in Pakistan, including me, “said Akram. “But if this hits our relations and cricket, it would mean that we have given in to terrorists.”Akram can draw on personal experience: he captained Pakistan on their tour of India in early 1999, despite threats from religious fundamentalists in India that they would disrupt the tour. Pakistan drew the Test series 1-1 and won the subsequent Pepsi Cup tri-series, also featuring Sri Lanka, thus ending a ten-year drought where neither country had toured the other for Tests. They also won the Asian Test Championship match in Calcutta by 46 runs on the tour.Though worried about the effect on the peace process between the two countries, Akram hoped the situation would improve. “Cricket means everything in the subcontinent. It has built bridges and has averted wars on several occasions. People love and worship cricket, so it would be a great loss if cricket is halted. I hope it isn’t,” he said.India’s tour schedule, from January 2009, was first put in doubt last month when the Indian government refused to grant permission to its junior hockey team to visit Pakistan due to security concerns. India did visit Pakistan in June-July this year for the Asia Cup, but concerns increased after the Champions Trophy, due to be held in September, was postponed following ongoing security concerns.Pakistan have suffered from a number of postponements this year because of security concerns and if India don’t come, it could leave Pakistan without a Test from December 2007 to June 2009, when they are scheduled to visit Sri Lanka.

Windass surprised that Zouma’s not in Chelsea’s starting XI

Former professional footballer Dean Windass is surprised that Kurt Zouma isn’t in Chelsea’s starting eleven this season.

Thomas Tuchel’s side have made the perfect start to the Premier League season, winning both their opening two matches and keeping two clean sheets in the process.

Zouma did start the UEFA Super Cup game against Villarreal, playing 66 minutes, but hasn’t featured in the Premier League so far this season for the Blues and has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge this summer.

David Ornstein of the Athletic, posted on his personal Twitter account that West Ham and Chelsea had a €30m (£25.7m) verbal agreement for Zouma but are stuck on personal terms, but Windass is surprised that Zouma isn’t in Chelsea’s team this year, telling Transfer Tavern: “I’m very surprised that he’s obviously not in Chelsea’s team after last year, you know, he did brilliantly last year.”

The 26-year-old featured for Chelsea win, two Premier League trophies, a UEFA Champions League, an English League Cup and the UEFA Super Cup just a few weeks ago.

With just a week to go until the transfer window shuts and with interest in his signature, will Zouma move across London to West Ham or will he remain at Stamford Bridge beyond the deadline?

Exclusive: Steve Howey says he’ll be surprised to see Newcastle re-sign Andy Carroll

Steve Howey doesn’t think that failing to bring in another striker could result in Newcastle re-signing Andy Carroll.

Following a disappointing second spell with his boyhood club, Carroll was released at the end of last season after scoring just once across all competitions last season.

Carroll’s departure leaves Steve Bruce with just three strikers at his disposal, and two of them in Dwight Gayle and Joelinton have struggled to add goals in recent seasons.

But despite Carroll’s exit being confirmed almost one month ago, Newcastle’s tight transfer budget means that Bruce has been unable to sign a replacement and help first-choice Callum Wilson with the workload.

The capture of Joe Willock should take the pressure off him, but an injury to the ex-Bournemouth striker could leave Bruce short on numbers.

However, whilst Carroll has been unable to find another club and therefore remains a free agent, Howey doesn’t think Newcastle will consider bringing him back to St James’ Park.

He exclusively told Football FanCast:

“I thought he was on that [short-term] deal anyway, but I’ll be surprised if he goes back, because they let him go.”

Pundit believes Southampton target Joe Worrall wants move

Southampton could be in for a major boost in their pursuit of Joe Worrall after former Nottingham Forest frontman Nigel Jemson suggested the defender is itching for a Premier League move.

Saints have been heavily linked with Forest centre-half Worrall as the transfer deadline nears, although reports suggest the 24-year-old is also on the radar of Premier League rivals Brentford, Burnley, Norwich City, Crystal Palace and West Ham United.

Southampton’s interest comes following the departure of Denmark international Jannik Vestergaard, who completed a £15million switch to Leicester City having entered the final 12 months of his contract at St Mary’s Stadium.

Worrall, who is yet to feature for Forest this season due to a calf injury, made 33 appearances for Forest last term and caught the eye with some impressive displays.

While he is yet to taste Premier League football, Worrall boasts experience in Scotland’s top tier thanks to a spell with Rangers.

Jemson is confident Worrall would make the grade at Southampton.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “Joe is a local lad who has done really well. He went up to Rangers and played under a great manager in front of a big amount of fans at Ibrox. He learnt his trade there and came back a better player for it.

“He has come into the first team at Nottingham Forest on a regular basis and performed at a very good level.

“He’s going to attract attention. Every player’s dream in the Championship is to play in the Premier League and I’m sure Joe is no exception to that.”

Tailenders' batting swung match – Sangakkara

“The way Prasanna, Prasad and Mendis scored runs really swayed the tempo to our camp when we walked into the field,” said Sangakkara

The fanatical India optimist will lose sleep harbouring visions of another Kolkata turnaround, but the truth is Sri Lanka have put this match beyond India. They have played more sensibly and professionally, showing an indication to hold back instead of accelerating, and while it hasn’t been the most authoritative of performances, it has put them on course for an emphatic series victory.Sri Lanka had much the better of proceedings on the third day. Inspired by Kumar Sangakkara’s 144 they edged past India’s first-innings 249 before the bowlers ran through India’s top order to leave themselves five wickets to win the game. Sri Lanka started the day with a two-run lead and Sangakkara resumed on 107, in the company Prasanna Jayawardene. Sangakkara’s determination revived memories of his unbeaten 157 against West Indies at Kandy in 2005, where he was forced to dig deep and shun his natural aggressive instincts. Like that innings, this could prove match-winning as well.”It just depends on how I made the approach,” said Sangakkara. “Sometimes I have made the wrong decisions, sometimes I have not been up to the task. You get those periods [but] the key is to keep focus and keep your confidence up.”Like yesterday, he was decisive about when to leave and when to play his shots. Harbhajan Singh again invited the drive but Sangakkara waited until he thought the time was ripe, and then fluent shots followed. He appeared untroubled at the crease but was cut off when he nibbled Kumble to Parthiv Patel, who managed to hold on. “My attitude is it doesn’t matter what you have done before but what really comes,” Sangakkara said.Instead of wilting, Sri Lanka’s lower order pressed on, led by Prasanna, who made a crucial 49. Prasanna’s skills as a wicketkeeper were never in doubt but Sangakkara’s stock as a matchwinner meant he had to wait his turn. He has evolved tremendously and made a niche for himself as a street fighter, always up for a scrap. His batting had a calmness about it but his instinct for singles was lethal. His soft-handed steers evaded cemented close-in catchers, and he cut and swept with precision. Only 101 runs were scored in the first session but the pendulum had swung Sri Lanka’s way.Dammika Prasad, in his first innings, combined with Prasanna and Ajantha Mendis to inject life into the tail and get Sri Lanka’s lead close to 150. Every run counted, and the tail went about it manfully.”The way Prasanna, Prasad and Mendis scored runs really swayed the tempo to our camp when we walked into the field,” said Sangakkara. That was all the confidence Sri Lanka needed on a third day track, and they maintained it despite a blazing Indian reply. In nine overs between the last Sri Lankan wicket and tea, India’s openers pummelled 57 runs. Virender Sehwag came out after the interval like a man possessed and drilled Prasad for a fierce straight driven four. Then, in the space of five deliveries from Prasad, India’s openers were gone – victims of needless shots. As he had in the first innings, Prasad delivered what his fast-bowling predecessors could not. He didn’t waver, kept attacking, and took his match tally to what Chaminda Vaas and Nuwan Kulasekara took in two matches. If Prasad’s success was unexpected, Mendis’ was customary. Muttiah Muralitharan removed Sourav Ganguly and then it was over to Mendis, who trapped Parthiv with a skidder. Mendis’ mastery over India continued with off breaks, skidders and two-fingered googlies, which kept the batsmen guessing. His 25th wicket, surpassing Alec Bedser’s record for a three-match debut series, was the man he had failed to dislodge so far in this series. Sachin Tendulkar did come out to bat, but made no impact, fatally opting to pad up to Mendis.”Now his [Mendis’] challenge is to get better everyday,” said Sangakkara. “He’s got a great bunch of senior bowlers he can talk to, whether it’s fast bowlers or spinners. The character and intelligence he’s shown … I am sure as the years go by he’ll get better and better.”This match has swung one way, then the other, only to be further elbowed and nudged to and fro, but thanks to efficient batting and rejuvenated bowling, it has now been wrested Sri Lanka’s way. The disconsolate looks from Galle were replaced with smiles, back-slaps and a massive step towards clinching a series that has been thoroughly engrossing.

Derby County interested in Tom Carroll

Derby County are interested in a deal to bring Tom Carroll to Pride Park this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Derby Telegraph, who claim that the former Queens Park Rangers midfielder has started training with Wayne Rooney’s side, and could feature in the club’s pre-season friendly against Salford City on Saturday.

The news comes after the EFL granted Derby permission to sign up to five out of contract players in the summer transfer window, although the Championship side still remain under a transfer embargo.

Finally, the report states that the Rams currently have Phil Jagielka, Ravel Morrison, Curtis Davies, Andre Wisdom, Sone Aluko, Sam Baldock, Richard Stearman and Ryan Allsop training with the first team, all of whom are playing for a contract ahead of next season.

Carroll could finally replace Johnson

While a knee injury saw Carroll sidelined for the second half of last season, the 29-year-old nevertheless demonstrated in his time at QPR that he would prove an extremely useful addition to Wayne Rooney’s Derby side ahead of next season.

Indeed, over his 22 Championship appearances for the Rs last term, the £1.62m-rated man provided one assist and created three big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 0.5 shots and making 1.1 key passes per game.

The central midfielder also impressed in more typical metrics for his position, making an average of 0.6 interceptions, 1.3 tackles, 0.7 clearances and winning 2.7 duels per match.

These returns saw the man Jamie Carragher dubbed an “outstanding” player earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.74, with his performances leading to Mark Warburton trying to tie the 29-year-old down to a new deal at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium, although he would ultimately reject the club’s advances.

Furthermore, it could be argued that, following Bradley Johnson’s departure from Pride Park in the summer of 2019, the Rams have failed to adequately replace the midfielder, something that the potential capture of Carroll could prove to resolve.

As such, as long as the former Tottenham Hotspur man can prove his fitness in training with the Rams, it would seem highly advisable for Rooney to do all he can to secure a deal for the midfielder this summer, with his signing very much appearing to be a welcome step in the right direction for the crisis-hit club.

Palmer: Southampton in big trouble if they can’t replace Ings

In an exclusive interview with The Transfer Tavern, Carlton Palmer has warned that Southampton could be in serious trouble if they cannot replace star striker Danny Ings this summer.

As per The Athletic, Ings is refusing to sign a new contract at St. Mary’s, with his current one set to expire next year.

Meanwhile, The Telegraph claims that Ings is Tottenham’s primary target as new manager Nuno Espirito Santo looks to deploy a two-man attack at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Speaking recently on talkSPORT, Tony Cascarino suggested that Southampton could find themselves in relegation trouble if Ings ends up getting the move he is clearly seeking, and Palmer shares a very similar view.

“If you’re losing 22 goals in the Premier League, you’re in serious trouble, you’re in serious trouble,” the ex-Southampton player said in response to Cascarino’s claim. “Don’t leave your business to the last minute.

“If you’re not going to be able to tie him down to a contract, I’d get him out and get maybe one or two players in that might be able to come up with 10 goals each. That’s what you need to do.”

Ings has scored a total of 34 goals across the last two Premier League seasons, so Southampton would indeed be losing a lot of firepower if he were to leave. If they cannot replace that, yes, it could end up being a long season for the Saints.
