Rain and bad light holds up an odd day at Bath

Victor Isaacs14-Jun-2002It was an odd day at the Bath Recreation Ground as in-between stoppages for rain and bad light, the game progressed, but not in a way that many of the patient crowd had expected.Somerset soon lost their overnight savour Ian Blackwell when he fell to a sucker punch, being caught by Udal at backward point off Mascarenhas. He had played exactly the same shot the ball before which went for four.Robert Turner and Keith Dutch shared a 41-run partnership at two runs per over to show some signs of recovery but when three wickets fell in quick succession, either side of a length rain break shortly after the lunch interval, Somerset captain surprised everyone at the ground, including the Hampshire fielders by declaring, 91 runs behind. The crowd were so surprised, that some of them even booed the umpires, as they thought they had been brought off for bad light! On a wicket that had been playing tricks from the first day, with overcast conditions, some thought that the boldness of the declaration was sheer folly. However, the home side took four Hampshire wickets for just three runs, before bad light curtailed play for the day.Derek Kenway was first to go when he attempted to hook Richard Johnson’s first ball into the Bath Rugby Club, but was well caught on the boundary edge. White edged Johnson to keeper Turner and when Kendall and Laney fell off successive Matthew Bulbeck deliveries, Nic Pothas survived the hat-trick ball.Hampshire finished the day, however, still in a good position, 94 runs ahead with six wicket in hand, but will be looking for a least another 100 runs which on that Bath wicket could be enough to secure a much-needed victory.

Usmanov backs Benitez for the Everton job

If Rafa Benitez becomes the new manager of Everton football club then Farhad Moshiri and co should be wary of fan power.

Supporters have already been left dismayed by the club’s pursuit of the Spaniard but the Toffees aren’t pulling away from a deal just yet.

What’s the word?

Everton’s search for a new manager is now into its fourth week but at last, the hierarchy are on the verge of concluding a deal.

Last week it was reported by Jim White that they were incredibly close to announcing Benitez as the new boss but that has since been met with concern from supporters.

Unfortunately, the board appear to be unrelenting in their desire to hire the 61-year-old.

Another backer now includes Alisher Usmanov. The Standard reported on Wednesday that the Uzbek billionaire was a supporter of the controversial move to appoint Benitez.

Usmanov isn’t a shareholder on the board but his companies provide huge sums of money in sponsorship for Everton so his backing should be a worry for fans who are not in favour of Benitez being hired as their club’s nee manager.

Fans must be livid

Everton’s hunt for a new manager has been incredibly perplexing.

The Toffees were close to hiring former Wolves boss Nuno Santo but after talks stalled, they made their move for Benitez.

The 61-year-old famously dubbed the Merseyside outfit ‘small’ all the way back in 2007 and as a result, supporters have been keen to display their annoyance at the board for considering him.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-everton-manager-transfer-nuno-conte-wood-marcelo” title= “Read the latest Everton manager and transfer news!”]

Benitez has won a Champions League and has multiple honours across the domestic scene in Europe so you can understand why he’s being considered from a CV point of view.

However, perhaps Moshiri ought to look towards what Chairman Bill Kenwright is keen on.

He initially had discussions with David Moyes but a move for the Scot is now off the table after he signed a new contract with West Ham United.

Kenwright has also been a fan of Roberto Martinez as they attempt to replace Carlo Ancelotti.

The Belgium manager ended up losing his job in Merseyside during his first spell in charge of Everton but he knows the scenery and clearly still holds an excellent relationship with one of the club’s key board members.

Supporters may have grown tired of his stubborn tactics but at the moment, it feels like anyone would be preferable ahead of Benitez.

The trouble is, with major investors in Everton keen on seeing the former Liverpool manager arrive, Moshiri may not have much choice.

Hiring somebody else and watching them fail could leave to decreased sponsorship; something that could hurt the Toffees immensely from a financial point of view. This feels like a catch 22 situation.

Spurs hero touts Toney as possible Kane alternative - exclusive

Former Tottenham Hotspur hero Graham Roberts believes that Ivan Toney would be a good signing for the club this summer.

Toney has enjoyed a fantastic season at Brentford as the club have won promotion to the Premier League via winning the Championship play-offs.

The striker scored at Wembley against Swansea City and ended the campaign with 33 goals and 10 assists in the second-tier, with 17 of those coming in 2021 alone.

It remains to be seen if he would be allowed to leave Brentford, given that he has a contract until 2025, and he is valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt.

Roberts believes that Spurs need to cast their net wider than they are currently as they look to bring reinforcements into the squad, and start looking down the leagues.

Indeed, he has cited the example of Ollie Watkins, who joined Aston Villa from Brentford and made England’s provisional squad for the European Championships, having scored 14 Premier League goals last term.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “There’s players out there. What about Toney at Brentford? Watkins has done it, do you not think Toney can do it? But they don’t want to look that low, but he’s a Premier League player now.

“That’s what you’ve got to do, you’ve got to look at the lower-leagues, there are good players there. But the spine of your team has to be the best so you have to pay the best and everything else falls into place.”

Mashonaland win by 2 wickets in Alexandra

The fourth and final day was by far the most dramatic with the hosts Mashonaland A winning by two wickets in a tight finish soon after lunch

Larry Moyo25-Mar-2002The fourth and final day was by far the most dramatic with the hosts Mashonaland A winning by two wickets in a tight finish soon after lunch. The day began with Mashonaland A claiming the remaining Manicaland wicket two overs into the first session. The visitors could only add one more run totheir overnight total of 205 before number 11 batsman Ian Coulson was out, bowled for a duck by Rennie who finished the innings with three wickets from 49 off 21 overs. This meant that Mashonaland A had the whole day to reach a victory target of 155. But it was not to be an easy target for them and it needed the experience of Board XI members Mark Vermeulen and wicketkeeper Alester Maregwede to claim maximum points eventually. Opener Vermeulen scored 43 off just 57 balls whileMaragwede, batting at number six, topscored with 45 off 80 balls. While the players had expected the final day to belong to spinners, it turned out to be the opposite as seamers Guy Whittall and Justin Lewis took thefirst seven of the Mashonaland A wickets to fall. Whittall ripped through the Mashonaland A top order as he claimed the wickets of opener Taylor (5), numberthree Andre Neethling (0) and number four Gavin Rennie (6) to leave them struggling at 51/3 after 12.5 overs.Lewis then took over and claimed the wickets of Elton Chigumbura (15), Vermeulen and number seven Norbert Manyande (0), while Whittall returned to remove captain Henry Olonga (11) as Mashonaland A looked set for adisappointing finish at 118/7 after 36.4 overs. With 37 more runs needed to with three wickets in hand Maregwede and 17 year-old Prosper Utseya added 22 runs with the former looking increasingly comfortable with the Manicaland attack. Just when Maragwede was looking at scoring a half-century he lost concentration and edged a Soma delivery to the wicketkeeper. Pressure returned to Mashonaland A as they still needed 15 more runs to win as number 10 David Mutendera went to the crease.Mutendera hit two fours while Utseya added singles to leave the scores level after 49.2 overs. Needing a single to win, Mutendera was deceived by a Somadelivery and only managed to sky the ball. As Mutendera completed a run, Ferreira went under the ball and with everyone expecting a routine catch, theball dropped between his gloves and the match went to Mashonaland A.It was Mashonaland A’s second win in three matches with Matabeleland and Mashonaland remaining while Manicaland are still looking for a win with just twomatches against Midlands and Matabeleland remaining.

Trescothick in charge as Somerset defeat champions

A sparkling century from Marcus Trescothick has carried Somerset to a seven-wicket win over county champions Yorkshire at Taunton

Ralph Dellor & Stephen Lamb10-May-2002A sparkling century from Marcus Trescothick carried Somerset to a seven-wicket win over county champions Yorkshire at Taunton. Although Trescothick lost Jamie Cox and Michael Burns before lunch, he then found a reliable partner in Peter Bowler, who made an unbeaten 79 as Somerset, set 262 to win, cruised home with more than a day to spare. Trescothick made 134 (three sixes, 18 fours) to set him up nicely for the first Test at Lord’s next week.

The match at The Oval between Surrey and Lancashire always looked as if it had the makings of a real contest, and that is the way it is turning out. Chasing 305 to win, Surrey have reached 200 for four, with Mark Ramprakash (71) and Alec Stewart (25) at the crease. In the morning session, Lancashire lost a potential match-winner early on when Stuart Law fell to Azhar Mahmood having added only 18 to his overnight score. The Pakistani was not finished there, either, for he also claimed Glen Chapple and Kyle Hogg to finish with figures of eight for 61. With Jimmy Ormond claiming John Wood lbw, it was left to skipper Warren Hegg with 42 before he was last man out.Paul Nixon did his best to get Kent out of what proved to be an impossible situation against Hampshire. After he had lost Ed Smith for 77, Nixon saw Matthew Fleming also go to Dimitri Mascarenhas. Min Patel (58) helped him add 89 for the seventh wicket. Nixon finished unbeaten on 77 and Mascarenhas took four wickets as Kent were eventually dismissed for 337. Needing just 111 to win, Hampshire lost just two wickets with John Crawley 50 not out at the end.Warwickshire are up against it after being forced to follow on at Grace Road. Chasing a massive 523 first innings by Leicestershire, they were bowled out for 177, with Matthew Whiley taking three wickets and only Shaun Pollock making much impression with 59. At the close, Warwickshire were 197 for two, still 149 behind, but Nick Knight is still there with 75 to his name. Michael Powell was out for 67.In Division Two Nottinghamshire have beaten Essex by seven wickets at Trent Bridge. The visitors were bowled out for 270 in their second innings despite a fighting effort from the tail. Greg Smith was the man to do the damage as the tall, left-arm pace bowler took eight for 53 in the innings to finish with 11 wickets in the match. Chasing 188 to win, Nottinghamshire got there comfortably thanks to an unbeaten 85 from Usman Afzaal. To add to their misery Essex were deducted half a point for their slow over rate.Northamptonshire’s batsmen made a much better fist of things second time around after following on 407 runs behind against Derbyshire, but they still lost by eight wickets. Mike Hussey and Mal Loye both completed centuries and there was an innings of 62 from Graham Swann, but they could only set Derbyshire a target of 33 to record their third win in as many matches.David Hemp and Michael Powell led Glamorgan’s efforts to post a challenging target for Worcestershire in the fourth innings. Hemp made 64 and Powell 59 as Glamorgan moved carefully to a lead of 336. There were five wickets for Alamgir Sheriyar. Worcestershire were 25 without loss at the close.

Should Wolves hire Rafa Benitez?

Wolverhampton Wanderers without Nuno Santo will be a strange sight.

He and Fosun have completely changed the way this team and Molineux are seen. They’ve been transformed from a mid-table Championship side to an outfit with heavy European ambitions.

Unfortunately, Wolves didn’t come anywhere close to achieve those goals this term, finishing in the bottom half of the Premier League.

Therefore, a fresh start could be beneficial. It’ll give the club an opportunity to reset and work out where they want to go in the future.

Jorge Mendes has delved into his deep book of clients to suggest both Bruno Lage and Paulo Fonseca but Frank Lampard is also reportedly on their radar.

However, no one commands more respect or has a bigger aura in the game than a certain Rafa Benitez.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast this week, former Newcastle defender Steve Howey suggested he’d be a good appointment for the Old Gold: “I would imagine that somebody like Rafa Benitez will be inundated with offers, but whether they are offers from Premier League teams, I’m not too sure.

“[Wolves are] obviously a club that has turned around its fortunes brilliantly and they seem to be quite a well run club who appear to have some financial backing. So again, I wouldn’t disregard that idea of somebody like Rafa going there.”

The former Newcastle boss is currently out of management following a spell in China and is seeking a return to English football.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-transfer-news-guedes-toney-shaqiri-neves” title=”Read the latest Wolves transfer news!”]

A Champions League-winning manager with Liverpool, the Spaniard has a habit of attracting trophies, taking home the Europa League with Chelsea and securing the Club World Cup at Inter Milan. That’s without forgetting the two La Liga titles he won with Valencia earlier in his career.

Benitez is one of the most endearing managers around and with no compensation package required, this feels like a no-brainer for Wolves.

A master on the training ground, his meticulous attention to detail could be what’s required in order to take them to the next level.

During his time at Newcastle, Benitez’s training sessions would usually last 60-90 minutes, with a large emphasis on exercises related to game preparation and tactics. 80% of the session would be work undertaken with the ball, while the other 20% would be focused solely on fitness and conditioning.

The former Liverpool boss is also big on using analytics. In Merseyside, the 61-year-old used a Spanish tool called Amisco, an app that’s now merged with Prozone and Opta.

Adept at feeding his players intricate levels of detail, it could prove the difference in improving a number of Wolves players. After all, there is plenty of potential to be extracted from the likes of Fabio Silva and Adama Traore, two individuals who may benefit from more emphasis on the training pitch.

Benitez might not be a coach seeking a long-term project but that shouldn’t deter Fosun from considering him for the vacant position. After all, this is a coach hailed by Pep Guardiola and loved by Jurgen Klopp, someone who called him a “fantastic manager”

He is somebody who’d instantly command the respect of the dressing room.

Pundit claims Celtic could appoint Keane

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Steve Howey, who made 278 appearances during his career, has claimed that Roy Keane could be a good appointment for Celtic if they want someone who takes no prisoners.

With Eddie Howe continuing to stall over accepting the Celtic job, something his representatives have said he won’t do until at least the summer, Keane reportedly held more talks with Celtic over the role last month.

Keane has not been a manager since he was sacked by Ipswich Town in 2011 but before that, he managed to get Sunderland promoted from the Championship to the Premier League.

Speaking on how Keane could be a different option for Celtic and what he would be like as a manager, Howey exclusively told FFC:

“He obviously played there at the back end of his career so he’s already got a bond with Celtic fans, but it all depends on what the board want. Do they want somebody like Keane, who won’t take any prisoners whatsoever and will upset players because he doesn’t care?

“I think sometimes that’s the right way to go about it but you can’t really do that all the time anymore, but who am I to question Keane? For a manager to go to Celtic, it will be a huge job for them.”

Whoever is appointed as Celtic’s new manager will have a big job on their hands as they look to regain the SPFL title from Steven Gerrard’s Rangers.

Howe has reportedly held talks with Premier League clubs Crystal Palace and Newcastle United with the future of their respective managers uncertain.

CPFC: Fans react to Christian Benteke update

Plenty of Crystal Palace fans have been giving their thoughts to the latest update regarding striker Christian Benteke on social media

According to Turkish outlet Fanatik, cited by Sports Witness, Fenerbahce are determined to arrange a deal for the forward before the European Championships.

Benteke, described as ‘fantastic’ by teammate Jordan Ayew last year, is out of contract at Selhurst Park over the coming months.

The recent report signals that all signs point towards a Selhurst Park exit this summer, with the Belgian not short of potential suitors.

He’s on £120,000-a-week with the Eagles, so his possible exit could be huge in terms of the club then potentially using that money on younger additions.

However, it seems as if a number of Palace supporters don’t want to see him go.

@CPFCtransfersHQ shared Sports Witness’ report regarding Benteke on social media on Wednesday.
