UAE jump to second place, in hunt for World Cup spot

ScorecardUAE’s chances of qualifying for the 2015 World Cup depend on Afghanistan’s results against Kenya•ICC/Salim Sanghati

United Arab Emirates leapfrogged into second place on the World Cricket League Championship table with a resounding win over Namibia, giving themselves a shot at direct qualification into the 2015 World Cup.UAE, who were placed fifth on the table before their two WCL matches against Namibia, edged Netherlands out of the second place with a higher number of wins – nine against Netherlands’ eight victories. The race for the second place, however, is far from over. Afghanistan are currently fourth on the table with 15 points and two games in hand. What UAE’s victory has done is clearly define Afghanistan’s goal for the last two matches: they need wins against Kenya on October 2 and October 4. A loss in any match or an abandoned game would end Afghanistan’s chances of direct qualification.UAE’s win over Namibia on Sunday was their second successive victory with a margin of more than 100 runs. In the second game, Namibia, who chose to bowl, made a good start, dismissing Mohammad Azam for 6 off the third ball of the match. Shaiman Anwar, who has made a habit of helping UAE recover from poor starts in recent List A games, did the same again, constructing a 75-ball 57 and adding 81 runs for the second wicket with Saqib Ali. Anwar is now the leading run-getter in the WCL Championship, with 625 runs from 14 games at an average of 52.08. His UAE team-mate Khurram Khan also leads the run charts of the ICC Intercontinental Cup.UAE lost a few quick wickets after Anwar was out and a steady 45-run, sixth-wicket stand between Mohammad Shafiq and Rohan Mustafa helped them stage a small recovery, taking the team to 177 for 5 in the 45th over. Ahmed Raza and Mustafa then added some quick runs after Shafiq fell to push the team total past 200. Namibia pacer Christi Viljoen, used in short bursts throughout the UAE innings, struck off successive deliveries to dismiss Raza and Nasir Aziz in the penultimate over. UAE’s innings ended for 215 in the next over when Louis van der Westhuizen dismissed Mustafa and Shadeep Silva.Namibia started cautiously but faced a double blow when Silva bowled van der Westhuizen and Stephan Baard off successive deliveries in the fifth over. Xander Pitchers and wicketkeeper Jaen Kotze tried resurrecting the chase, but once Pitchers fell for 29, with the score at 46 for 3, Namibia collapsed. They lost their last eight wickets for 34, even as Khurram Khan and Nasir Aziz missed out on hat-tricks in the 24th and 32nd over respectively.UAE coach and former Pakistan bowler, Aqib Javed praised Anwar and Mustafa for their performances and said that the team had planned to achieve this result.”As usual, Shamin Anwar has done really well and today he becomes the highest run-getter. I’m glad the Khurram Khan is the highest run-getter in the ICC Intercontinental Cup and Shaiman is in the WCL Championship,” Javed said. “I think that we have some good batsmen for the UAE and today Rohan Mustafa, the youngster, was brilliant. I think his improvement in the last six to eight months is amazing. I think he will be a key player for the UAE in the coming years.”Namibia coach Doug Watson said the side’s poor batting form was the main cause of their loss: “There’s probably more pressure on them than us, with what they had to play for, but I think there was pressure anyway because of how poorly we played in the first WCL Championship game. It was a much better performance today, and again, the fielding and bowling was brilliant – it was the batting that let us down.”

Coleman pleads guilty to ball tampering

Freddie Coleman, the Warwickshire and Scotland batsman, has pleaded guilty to ball tampering but has escaped an immediate suspension

Freddie Coleman, the Warwickshire and Scotland batsman, has pleaded guilty to ball tampering during a 2nd XI Championship match against Glamorgan earlier this month but has escaped an immediate suspension.Warwickshire have been fined £5000 and the disciplinary panel said “the club did not provide sufficient discouragement regarding ball tampering.” They were also critical of the captain for the game in question, Paul Best, who they said allowed the tampering to continue with his knowledge.Coleman’s guilty plea and his age, 21, were noted by the panel although they stressed that this was not setting a precedent for any future ball-tampering cases. He was handed a two-match suspension but that was suspended for two years and will come into force if he breaks any further ECB regulations in that period. The panel’s statement said: “Frederick Coleman pleaded guilty to a charge that during a Second XI Championship match between Warwickshire CCC and Glamorgan CCC at Cardiff CC on 7th – 9th August, he knowingly and deliberately changed the condition of the ball in contravention of Law 42.3(b).”Warwickshire pleaded guilty to a charge that a player registered to and playing for them knowingly and deliberately changed the condition of the ball in contravention of Law 42.3(b).”The panel took into account that Mr Coleman pleaded guilty, that he is a young player and that he was allowed to act in this way with the knowledge of his captain. In light of these circumstances, the panel imposed a two match suspension on him. However, this penalty is suspended for a period of 24 months.”The panel wished to make it clear that the personal circumstances of Mr Coleman were taken into account and that the sanction is not to be seen as setting a precedent in any future cases of this kind.”The panel has imposed a fine of £5000 on Warwickshire CCC and the deduction of the points gained in this match. In the panel’s view, the club did not provide sufficient discouragement regarding ball tampering, all types of which are clearly inappropriate and in contravention of the Laws of the game.”Coleman has yet to make a first-class appearance for Warwickshire but has played in their Twenty20 side. He has played two ODIs and a Twenty20 for Scotland alongside two matches in the Intercontinental Cup and has been part of the YB40 campaign. His highest first-class score of 110 came for Oxford MCCU against Worcestershire in 2012.

Bangladesh face tough questions ahead of second Test

The Bangladesh Test team have several questions posed to them after their lackluster performance in the first Test against Zimbabwe, questions that will ultimately define their progress this season

Mohammad Isam24-Apr-2013Bangladesh’s first Test scores of 134 and 147 are to Mushfiqur Rahim’s captaincy what 58 and 78 were to Shakib Al Hasan’s reign. Back in 2011 when Bangladesh were shot out by West Indies and South Africa in the space of 15 days, it was half expected by those close to the team. When it happened in Harare however, it wasn’t under a captain who is a “ticking time bomb,” and neither is the team a one-man show these days.Despite some of the same personnel in the two debacles, there is a little more surprise at the 335-run defeat. The surprise comes from the team’s steady progress this season. They beat a full-strength West Indies at home, and finally had something to write on the wall in Sri Lanka. This is a season when Bangladesh made 556 and 638, when there was a Test double-century and before one forgets, 2012-13 is the season when Mohammad Ashraful played with a level head.Such a scoreline usually means one thing in Bangladesh cricket: heads will roll. Shakib lost his captaincy after losing to Zimbabwe last time, and was vilified by the cricket board. There is however a high percentage of improbability in Mushfiqur losing his captaincy.Without letting emotion dictate terms, smarter minds would take this occasion to discuss some home truths within the team. The biggest one at this stage would be to find out a way to counter proficient swing bowling. The ball is bound to move in Harare in April, but there was a distinct lack of an alternate path. When they did try to defend instead of attack (and that is a highly risky shift in thinking to tame swing bowling), it spelled disaster. The approach of Jahurul Islam and Ashraful was worth appreciating, but they are two of countless batsmen in Bangladesh bred on flat decks and the regular dose of half-volleys on it. In other words, none of them are essentially prepared to face good swing bowling on a track that bounces differently and helps maneuver the ball in both directions. Keegan Meth’s swing looked innocuous until it accounted for Mahmudullah and Jahurul, both tentative in their footwork and bat-swing as their minds dictated them to be.Then it became quite clear that while they can defend after an evening of attacking batting, these are not batsmen who could simply change gears once again. The trouble of getting into bad habits occurred in the second innings too, though to a different batsman in different circumstances, but again resulting in dismissals.Shahriar Nafees continued to be sucked into a drive by Kyle Jarvis. Nafees’ international experience meant he should have known better, but the young pace bowler out-thought him within an over. Two boundaries were hit, both with the left-hander driving away from his body. When the ball was much fuller, that habit remained and he swung back, but there was a glaring gap between bat and pad.Mushfiqur, Shakib Al Hasan and Nasir Hossain were also unable to halt the collapse in both innings. Mushfiqur was unlucky to be caught by Brendan Taylor in that manner, and Shakib was rusty after the injury lay-off. Nasir, however, showed little faith in the tail, bringing about his downfall in both innings. These three have been saving Bangladesh from sinking further into collapses in varied degrees in their career but once the panic button is pressed in that dressing-room, sometimes even its most disciplined or calmest fail to handle it out there. The only repercussion could see Mahmudullah give up his spot to Mominul Haque, though the latter is not a proven player of good swing bowling. The vice-captain doesn’t look like a batsman out of form, but rather one uneasy in his promoted position up the batting order.Apart from struggling against swing and to find out a Plan B, this is also a team that doesn’t always play with the expectation of winning. The other major difficulty they have placed on themselves over the last five years has been the selection of seven or eight batsmen. It looked revolutionary in 2008 and 2009, and a safety-first approach since 2010, but from next season there has to be a concerted effort to play six genuine batsmen to bring the runs.Whether these batsmen should have been more equipped to play in conditions offering lateral movement is a long-term argument. Also, why an international team wouldn’t have a reasonable alternative in every department, even if it is just a mental adjustment, is a legitimate question asked of the Bangladesh team. But these have been the team’s weaknesses, whether they were drawing the Test in Galle or crashing in Harare.Sometimes it is as simple as starting over. Much of their trouble from the first Test will remain in their minds but once the match starts on Thursday, their advantage would be the opportunity presented to quickly turn around from the disaster. This is going to be a big Test for Bangladesh, one which whether they like it or not, will ultimately define their progress this season.

Positives for England despite spin mystery

This warm-up match had become a futile exercise long before it was condemned to a draw

George Dobell in Ahmedabad11-Nov-2012
ScorecardJonathan Trott made a century but faced barely any spin bowling during his innings•Getty ImagesThis warm-up match had become a futile exercise long before it was condemned to a draw. There were 10 overs remaining when the captains shook hands but, despite England having a decent chance of forcing victory, few would have argued with the decision. If ever a game was crying out for euthanasia it was this one. It should probably have been sent to a Swiss clinic after the third day.It speaks volumes for the facile nature of the cricket that Nick Compton, having batted for over two-and-a-half hours, went to the nets for more meaningful practise moments after having been dismissed. He and Jonathan Trott had, after all, faced just 12 deliveries of spin between them during their first-wicket partnership of 162 in 51.3 overs.More significant was the action on the practice ground. Both Stuart Broad and Steven Finn were able to bowl at full pace and, though Broad was perhaps not quite himself – he did not deliver a bouncer or ask for a review in five or six overs of bowling – Finn looked impressive. It remains to be seen if they suffer any reaction to the spells over the next day or two but, for now, both look to have a decent chance of being available for Test selection. Graeme Swann will also rejoin the squad on Monday having briefly returned to the UK due to a family illness. On the pitch, Trott completed the 30th century of his first-class career. He struck the ball well but did not face a single delivery from Amit Mishra, the legspinner who has played 13 Tests for India, and will know that he will encounter much less modest bowling in the Test series. It is open to debate how much use these warm-up games have been. While most expect the battle between India’s spinners and England’s batsmen to define the series, England have had little chance to prepare for that specific battle. Despite having played three warm-up games, England have faced just 13.2 overs of spin in the second innings combined: less than 11% of the second innings overs they have faced. None of them have been against what might be described as high-quality spin bowling. While the tactic – and it is hard to believe it is not a deliberate tactic – of denying England exposure to good quality spin bowling or even spin-friendly conditions may be controversial, it is also legitimate. India would be foolish not to tailor conditions to suit them – the point of home advantage would be negated otherwise – and have, in all other ways, extended every courtesy to England. The BCCI exercised some magnanimity by allowing England to use a substitute wicketkeeper when Matt Prior was taken ill against Haryana – the Laws make it quite clear that the umpires could not allow it – and it is worth remembering that when India toured England in 2011 Northamptonshire rested several first-choice bowlers for their tour game. The days when domestic sides fielded their strongest team against touring sides are, in any country by and large, long gone.Besides, the tactic may backfire. England’s batsmen have enjoyed prolonged time at the crease – albeit against some very modest bowling – and several of the bowlers have experienced the heat of battle. Playing England into form – four of the top six have recorded centuries in the warm-up games – and confidence could come back to bite. Not so long ago, when Australia and West Indies were at their strongest, most of their domestic sides that played England gave them an almighty battle. The effect was to wear and demoralise the tourists.England’s more significant worries concern the lack of match bowling that Finn and Broad have experienced and the unconvincing nature of their slip catching. Alastair Cook, in particular, has some work to do if he is to make the first slip position his own. The thought of dropping Sachin Tendulkar early is enough to keep an England supporter awake at night with anxiety. Some might point to the fact that they lost five wickets for 14 runs in the first innings and five wickets for 34 runs in the second. But, on both occasions, the batsmen were thrashing out in a scenario that will not be replicated in the Test series. On this occasion, Matt Prior was run out, backing up, after the bowler, Jayant Yadav, got a hand on Ian Bell’s straight drive and the ball ricocheted onto the stumps, while Compton was caught down the leg side and Kevin Pietersen was caught on the long-on boundary. There was, briefly, a moment when it appeared England might win this game on the last afternoon. When Haryana, chasing a most improbable 442 to win, slipped to 110 for 6 with nearly an hour to go, England had every opportunity to push for the win. But, realising that such an outcome was largely meaningless and that they had garnered all they could from the game, the sides agreed to shake hands early. The bowlers had worked hard enough, by then. Stuart Meaker again generated the most pace, Tim Bresnan also bowled with good hostility and control, while Graham Onions found the rhythm that had been absent during the first innings and looked a much-improved bowler. Monty Panesar was tight as ever but, on a slightly worn pitch, generated just a little spin, while Samit Patel earned a wicket with a well-disguised change of pace. For Haryana, Nitin Saini produced a pleasing half-century, but England know this was a game and a warm-up period that offered a pale imitation of the far sterner tests that await.

Pietersen linked with BBL deal

Kevin Pietersen is believed to be considering a deal to play in the Big Bash League, with Melbourne Renegades and both Sydney sides hoping to secure his signature

Kevin Pietersen is believed to be considering a deal to play in the Big Bash League, with Melbourne Renegades and both Sydney sides – the Sixers and the Thunder – hoping to secure his signature.According to reports in the , Cricket Australia is also considering employing Pietersen, the England Test batsman, in an ambassadorial role to help promote the competition. Such a move would help circumvent the league salary cap, with Shane Warne employed on a similar basis during the last BBL.”We’re aware that he is interested and we’re aware that a couple of teams at least are talking to him, and we’re very hopeful that he will sign with a team and play after Christmas,” Mike McKenna, Cricket Australia’s commercial general manager and the project manager of the BBL, said. “He is definitely one of the top three or four global cricket stars at the moment. He’s an explosive batsman, can bowl, and he would bring a charisma to the Big Bash League that would excite us and excite the fans.”The teams have a salary cap and it’s up to them to make sure he’s being paid well enough to justify him coming here to play; the issue for us is whether there’s a role he can play in promoting the Big Bash League.”Pietersen, player of the tournament when England won the World Twenty20 in the Caribbean in 2010, announced his retirement from limited-overs international cricket at the end of May, citing a desire to rest and spend more time with his family. He was subsequently omitted from the 30-man preliminary squad for this year’s World T20 – though he can be added to that squad without any complication up until August 18.While England have no Test commitments in January – they will be engaged in an ODI tour of India – news that Pietersen is considering playing in the BBL will do nothing to dissuade those who believe his international retirement was motivated more by a desire to earn than a desire to rest. Certainly it would be hard to square his comments with his actions: Pietersen has taken several opportunities to criticise England’s hectic international schedule and, only a few weeks ago, he insisted “I’m not playing the Big Bash”.Since then it also has emerged that he told the ECB that he would like to spend extra time playing in the IPL (which runs from April 3 to May 26 in 2013), threatening his involvement in next May’s Test series between England and New Zealand.

Walia denies communication gap within Indian team

GS Walia, India’s media manager on tour in Australia, addressed the press to try to douse reports of a communication breakdown between the senior players. His refrain was to forget all that had happened

Sidharth Monga in Sydney24-Feb-2012GS Walia, India’s media manager on tour in Australia, addressed the press on behalf of the team to try to douse reports of a communication breakdown between the senior players. Not the captain, coach, senior players or team manager, but the media manager was entrusted with a responsibility of such delicate nature. To quote Walia verbatim in certain matters might still be unfair because he often exceeded the brief of a media manager. Once, to a question if certain earlier press conferences this tour had affected the team, Walia said, “Certainly… [all] facts were given to the nation. I don’t want to get into why it happened. Let us all be positive.”Back to the beginning. Walia began by saying there had been no communication gap, but when reminded of Virender Sehwag’s comments that MS Dhoni had given him and the press two entirely different reasons for resting the seniors, Walia kept repeating the phrase, “Let’s not analyse it further.”What makes it a serious matter is that Sehwag said Dhoni had told him he was resting the seniors because he wanted the young players to get more experience and chances. But in a press conference Dhoni said playing all three senior batsmen together would cost the side an extra 20 runs in the field. Sehwag didn’t take that comment well; he said that his fielding had been the same for 10 years, and also pointed to a full-length diving catch he took against Sri Lanka in Brisbane. The BCCI – at least in public – dismissed it all as misquoting by the media, but unconfirmed reports from India suggested the top brass had got in touch with the players and asked them to sort out the issues in a meeting on Thursday. Walia said that no such meeting happened, but that he had let the team know “immediately” after Sehwag’s press conference on February 21 that “this is not a small thing”.”Immediately when we came back along with Sehwag, I told everybody,” Walia said. “Because this is not a small thing. The nation must know what is happening here. You are the only medium through which the information is passed on to the whole nation. So I conveyed this to them immediately, in exactly the same terms. Everybody was there. All 17. They said, ‘Sir, nothing else. There is no difference, but we will be vigilant in future. If somebody has seen there is a communication gap, we will try to avoid that situation in future.’ So let us now all concentrate on the game.”Walia said the team is concerned about the reports that have appeared in the media. “First of all, I’ll tell you there was no communication gap,” Walia said. “But whatsoever is being shown or media is writing, the team is certainly concerned about it.”The press let him know that they had been reporting whatever the players were telling them. They wanted to know how the BCCI got an impression the players were being misquoted, because it is not possible to do so with press conferences that are recorded on camera and beamed directly on televisions. Walia admitted there was no misquoting, and that there might have been a communication gap between the team and the board.”At a distance, if the president has said it, it is maybe his views,” Walia said. “But I have never said it. I have never blamed the media.”There could be a communication gap. Seeing things from a distance. Let us all forget [everything].”The refrain of Walia’s address was to forget all that had happened, and that the team was looking forward to the remaining two matches. “I am not blaming the media, but they [the players] are concerned,” he said. “They are more concerned [than you].”I think they are very positive about it. To play the next two matches in a positive way, and to their real potential. We played first four matches, and we lost one, but in the next three they came to their potential. Now the team again wants the next two matches should be like that only.”Let us not analyse the same situation, why this was generated, how it came to this. Let us forget it and be positive in the future.”Edited by Abhishek Purohit

USA prevail in thrilling one-run win

USA Women beat Zimbabwe Women in a thrilling encounter in Mirpur, prevailing by just one run. A contribution of 72 off 89 balls from wicketkeeper Shebani Bhaskar was the backbone of USA’s score of 188. Bhaskar was the seventh wicket to fall with the score on 144, but Anahita Arora and Sara Farooq added a further 44 to lend some respectability to the total.USA didn’t do themselves any favours by bowling too many extras in the chase but made up for that by picking up wickets. The highest score in the Zimbabwe response was an unbeaten 28 from Christabel Chatonzwa; six batsmen in all reached double-figures. There were 33 extras in all, but the wickets fell in quick succession at the same time. At 172 for 7 in the 46th over, it was still Zimbabwe’s game but seamer Triholder Marshall and a couple of run-outs at the death clinched the game for USA. Marshall picked up three wickets, was involved in a run-out in the 48th over of the game while Bhaskar sealed the win with a run-out, catching Sharyce Saili short with two needed for victory. Zimbabwe will rue the fact that they lost the game with seven balls to spare with a set batsman at one end.Ireland Women slipped to their third defeat of the competition, losing to Bangladesh Women by 95 runs in Savar. Burgoyne, Velani help England to vital win

ScorecardEngland Under-19s kept their hopes of levelling the limited-overs series against South Africa Under-19 alive with a two-wicket win in a low-scoring match at Canterbury. Kishen Velani, the 16-year-old batsman who made his Under-19 debut at Taunton, guided England’s pursuit of 177 with a 60-ball half-century but it still took a late cameo from Jamie Overton to secure a vital victory in the 36th over.Quinton de Kock once again kept the tempo up despite wickets falling at the other end after South Africa had been put in to bat, striking five fours in his 40. His innings was complemented by Shaylin Pillay’s patient 30 and James Price’s typically adventurous 48, but there was precious little else from South Africa’s batsmen and had it not been for Prenelan Subrayen’s 25 South Africa would have been shot out for under 150.As it was, Peter Burgoyne had plenty to do with their sub-par total, snatching 4 for 8 in just over six overs as South Africa collapsed from 140 for 4 to 147 for 7. He had Pillay caught behind to spark the capitulation of the lower order, and followed that up by dismissing the dangerous Price, ending Subrayen’s cameo and trapping Lizaad Williams lbw to end the innings.Williams was soon getting his own back, picking up four quick wickets in his opening spell to reduce England to 25 for 4. Sam Wood, in partnership with Velani, helped England recover but Wood fell to South Africa captain Keaton Jennings for a 40-ball 48 and when Velani was dismissed by Duanne Olivier for 54 the home side were eight down with 21 still needed.Overton struck four fours to see them home in the tight finish, however, and with the scoreline now 3-2 England have the chance to level the series at Canterbury in two days time while South Africa will also be confident of ending their trip on a triumphant note.
